Global wellness sector becomes $5.6 trillion industry; expected to grow by 57% until 2027

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

Research by nonprofit organisation, Global Wellness Institute, suggests that the industry has grown from $3.4 trillion in 2013 and by 2027, it is expected to grow to $8.5 trillion.

Wellness is a big, global business with $5.6 trillion in revenue in 2022, according to a new report from the Global Wellness Institute, a leading industry group. Research from the nonprofit organisation said the industry has grown from $3.4 trillion in 2013; by 2027, it is expected to grow an additional 57%, to $8.5 trillion, about twice as large as Germany’s gross domestic product.

“We are surprised by the resiliency of the global wellness economy, and how quickly it has bounced back from the pandemic,” said Katherine Johnston, senior research fellow at GWI, in a press release.

There are varying estimates out there of what truly constitutes the size of the wellness industry. For example, one frequently cited number is $1.5 trillion, published by consultancy McKinsey & Co. in 2021.

Wellness can be a murky catchall label for a great variety of businesses. For its report, GWI defined the industry as “the active pursuit of activities, choices and lifestyles that lead to a state of holistic health.” In its research, GWI breaks down wellness into several wide categories, of which the largest—personal care and beauty—is valued at $1.08 trillion. That subsector includes such things as skin care and salons for hair or nails.

Just behind that category comes healthy eating, nutrition and weight loss, at $1.07 trillion; this does not include the rapidly growing market for prescription weight loss drugs such as Ozempic. Further GWI categories include wellness tourism, a $651 billion industry; physical activities like going to a gym; and public health, along with traditional and complementary medicine.

In one of the biggest changes since before the pandemic, spending on public health, prevention, and personalized medicine, was up the most, to $611 billion in 2022 from $358 billion in 2019. The report is including health screenings for Covid-19 and cancers in this metric.

One of the smallest sectors is “workplace wellness.” This consists of employer-designated programs aimed at boosting employees’ health and well-being, such as fitness and educational classes. Unlike many of the other sectors, this market has shrunk since 2019, from $52.2 billion to $50.6 billion in 2022, because more employees now work from home and corporations have been cutting costs.

It’s a different picture for hospitality companies, which are increasingly trying to capitalize on wellness tourism and demand for spas. Kerzner, with luxury brands including One&Only and such individual properties as Atlantis the Royal, is creating a brand around the trend, with its first location set to open in Dubai early next year: Siro will revolve around guests’ physical fitness, mental health, nutrition and sleep. It won’t be alone. Equinox, once known for upscale gyms, opened its first hotel in New York’s Hudson Yards in 2019, with rooms described as “temples to regeneration”; in September, it was included in the first-ever World’s 50 Best hotels list.

The only other New York hotel to rank on that list, Aman New York, has a three-floor wellness wing that’s part spa, part medical practice. An internist—trained at Harvard—can analyze your bloodwork and prescribe “wellness immersion programs” that include hyperbaric oxygen therapy.

“Every big brand has cottoned onto this notion that wellness is the new battleground for super luxury hotels,” says Inge Theron, founder of Facegym, in an interview with Bloomberg earlier this year. “Where it used to be what restaurant concept do you have, now it is about what you are doing in the spa space. It’s not just about having a big pool, it’s now about what smart doctors and scientists do you have on staff.”

As for who’s spending the most on wellness, spending per capita is highest in North America, at $5,108 a year—far above Europe’s $1,596. All those gym memberships, haircuts, vitamins, spa visits and yoga trips are adding up.

Engineering Graduate successfully grows and sells mushrooms in Rameshwaram

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

Karthik from Rameswaram, Tamil Nadu, managed to generate a monthly income ranging from Rs 10,000 to Rs 15,000 through mushroom cultivation.

Karthik was employed at a private firm in Chennai when the COVID-19 lockdown was imposed. The young engineering graduate was forced to return to his hometown of Gandhi Nagar in Rameshwaram, Tamil Nadu. Facing unemployment and worried about his financial situation, Karthik devised an ingenious plan: Create a mushroom farm!

After conducting extensive research, Karthik decided to follow the example of a mushroom farm operator in Puducherry called Sundaramurthy. He acquired mushroom seeds and set up his first mushroom farm. According to Karthik, a cooler climate is beneficial for growing mushrooms.

But, in his locality, elevated temperatures and substantial humidity played spoilsport to his business. So, to work around this problem, he erected a tent, encircled it with water, and planted over 200 mushroom beds within it. This method helped him maintain the optimal temperature range of 22.01°C to 28.7°C.

Interestingly, mushroom cultivation in hilly and cold areas involves disinfecting straws and placing mushroom seeds within plastic covers. A total of eight layers of covered seeds are placed atop the straw. Mushroom buds emerge around the 22nd day, post which a hole is created in the box to allow the mushrooms to grow. Once the mushrooms have matured, they are harvested for sale.

Due to the natural, chemical-free aspect of his mushrooms, his business promptly took off! Today, he services both households and local businesses. Karthik generates a modest monthly income of Rs 10,000 to Rs 15,000. He plans to expand his market presence by establishing a second tent and catering to additional stores.

In our fast-paced busy lives today, it’s easy to overlook one primary yet simple task, which is of eating healthy. We often find ourselves rushing through meals, multitasking, and barely paying attention to what we’re putting into our bodies. KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

Glass houses in India are a modern and chic housing solution that has been gaining popularity in recent years. While the impact of glasshouses on the environment is a topic of debate, their aesthetic appeal and connection to nature continue to attract homeowners.

Glass houses have become increasingly popular in India as a modern and chic housing solution. With their sleek and contemporary designs, glass houses offer an aesthetic appeal that is unmatched by traditional brick-and-mortar homes. In this post, we will explore the concept, impact, and attraction of glass houses in India.

What are Glass Houses?

Glass houses are homes that are primarily made of glass, offering a clear view of the surrounding environment. They often feature large, floor-to-ceiling windows and open spaces, creating a seamless connection between the indoors and outdoors. Glass houses are typically designed to offer a contemporary and minimalist feel, with a focus on simplicity and elegance.

Impact of Glass Houses

The impact of glasshouses on the environment and on the occupants themselves is a topic of debate. On one hand, glass houses offer a sustainable solution, as they are energy-efficient and can reduce the carbon footprint of a home. The large windows allow for natural light to enter, reducing the need for artificial lighting and thus, saving energy.

However, glass houses can also have a negative impact on the environment. The use of large amounts of glass can result in high levels of heat gain, which can increase the use of air conditioning, leading to higher energy consumption. In addition, the production and transportation of glass can result in a high level of carbon emissions.

The attraction of Glass Houses

Despite the potential negative impact on the environment, glass houses continue to attract homeowners in India. The aesthetic appeal of glass houses cannot be denied, as they offer a modern and luxurious living experience. The large windows and open spaces provide a feeling of freedom and connection to the outdoors, which can be very appealing for those seeking a closer connection to nature.

Glass houses are also ideal for those who live in scenic locations, as they allow for uninterrupted views of the surroundings. This can be particularly attractive for those who live in hilly or mountainous regions, as glass houses can provide stunning panoramic views of the landscape.

Glass houses in India are a modern and chic housing solution that has been gaining popularity in recent years. While the impact of glasshouses on the environment is a topic of debate, their aesthetic appeal and connection to nature continue to attract homeowners. Whether you are seeking a modern living experience or a connection to the natural world, a glass house in India may be the perfect solution for you.

8 reasons why you should act on your travel plans immediately

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

If work-life has been a pain and the madness is getting to you. It’s time to remember – “who’s the real boss?” Get back to being the boss of your life, take a break, pause, recoup and return with a new perspective.

As we get into the third month of 2023, Its time we get our luggage carriers out, wipe the dust off them and set out for some travel. Here are eight reasons that can ensure it’s time to set sail.

1. Beginnings set the trend.

As we move ahead in 2023, it’s enough motivation to start the year with a bang! It’s time you start checking those bucket lists and get out. If you’ve always wanted to see the Alps, just go ahead and fulfill your dreams.
Try Sky diving in Dubai, try getting that scuba diving certification you’ve always wanted.

2. For all that’s happened – You truly deserve a break

You don’t always need the world to validate your hard work. You too can do it. Pat yourself on that back for all the hard work and over worked life that you have led for the past year! All those all-nighers, unending presentations and work place clashes that you dealt with so gracefully…It’s time to celebrate yourself and all your efforts!

3. A date to get to know yourself a little more

We are all changing, learning and evolving. Let’s face it – we are not what we were yesterday. Are we in love with who we are? Is our life aligned to what we want to be. It’s time to head out to know “ the me “ before I know the world around me. Take that week off- and invest it in knowing where exactly you are in life and where you wish to be. A week in Vietnam, exploring and discovering your own facets as you discover the unique aspects of the country. A few days unearthing the beautiful Hampi, the beaches of Varkala a solo trip to Rishikesh or a trek to Ladakh could be interesting travel options within the country.

4. Family comes first

The last two years have once again reinforced the value of love in our life. This could be the blood bond of family or even those voluntarily chosen circles who mean the world to you. Gather your gang and create the most magical moments with them. A cruise vacation could be ideal for you. Being together yet doing your own things! The best of both worlds stitched together. Set your self with an adventure of a lifetime on a cruise ship that hosts you in pampering luxury giving you a gourmet feast and the best of entertainment in all possible forms- casinos, dramas, dance shows, shopping and gaming arcades.

5. They ditched you, but you never ditched yourself

If you are one of those – whose life hadn’t been too kind. It’s time to take charge. No more a victim. No more a mere “survivor”- it’s time to get your game back on point!

Get the steering back in your hands and navigate your way out. Fly yourself to the location – that would make you forget the wows and the woes. Meet new people, bag new experiences. Set out for a back packing spree- what better than a trip to Amsterdam with your gang or a quick refreshing reboot to the thai islands. Opt for accommodation options where you could stay with the locals or even couch surf. Hostels too give you an option to meet new people and create bonds for life.

6. Need a fresh perspective

It’s always good to re-boot. Have new perspectives. What we think/feel isn’t the only way. There are infinite plus ways – each angle shows you a new dimension. Use this chance to get the world view from a renewed lens. Uncover nuances of culture, breathe new traditions. Immerse yourself in experiences. You could make a small 2-day trip – to just be with yourself. If you are on a paucity of time- you could book yourself at a driving distance resort- and just allow yourself to re-evaluate life away from the madness. Nature resorts, Jungle safaris, Beach properties- could be interesting options – which give you a break from the concreteness of your current reality. Vacations like these often make you realise the grandeur and the bigness of nature – making you realise how small, inconsequential your life issues may be.

7. It’s payback time

We hardly say “thank you” and worlds like “I love you” to the ones who matter the most to us. More so because these entities are taken for granted.
When did you last tell your dad or your mum – that she means the world to you. Umm… still thinking. That’s your sign. Gift your folks – a gift of love and of gratitude. It’s time to tell them you love them, by setting aside time from the hum drum and dedicating it to those who are nothing less than your back bone. A thank you note and an air ticket- and trust me that sight on your bae’s face will be unimaginable! ( you will thank me for it). However, a trip like this often comes with a disclaimer! Make sure this trip is as tiny and compact as possible as you don’t want your surprise to turn into a shock. Try booking the weekend and aligning to their schedules.

8. Get back to being the boss

If your work life’s been a pain and the madness is getting on to you. It’s time to remember – “who’s the real boss?” Get back to being the boss of your life. Get that detailed life back on track. Switch the zeal on. Start owning up to your life. Take a break from the rat race- and re-evaluate. Redetermine and get back to doing something with purpose. Its time to navigate your life – and let’s start this with a trip that’s planned 100% on a no compromise spree – just the way you like it. This could be a hike you have always dreamed of or a far away destination –for instance, the northern lights- which always intrigued you-but never happened.
