DC vs MI: Jake Fraser-McGurk guides Delhi Capitals to their highest score in IPL

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

Delhi Capitals posted a massive score of 257/4 against Mumbai Indians in their Indian Premier League match here on Saturday. Sent into bat, young Jake FraserMcGurk started smashing the ball around from the get go and propelled DC to 92 for no loss in the powerplay.

Bringing his big-hitting prowess to the fore, young Jake Fraser-McGurk gave the scorching Delhi heat competition with a sizzling 27-ball 84 that powered Delhi Capitals to a massive 257 for four against Mumbai Indians in an IPL contest here on Saturday. While McGurk sparkled upfront, Tristan Stubbs dazzled with an unbeaten 48 off 25 balls at the death overs as DC put up a superlative batting effort to register their highest-ever score in IPL.

Here are the team’s top-5 scores in the league’s history:

257/4 vs MI Delhi 2024 *
231/4 vs PK Delhi 2011
228/4 vs KKR Sharjah 2020
224/4 vs GT Delhi 2024

Opening for DC for the second time this season, the 22-year-old Fraser-McGurk equalled his own record for the fastest fifty this season getting the milestone off just 15 balls after the hosts were put in to bat by MI. With McGurk in the middle, it was raining boundaries and sixes at the rather small Arun Jaitley Stadium. He hit 11 fours and six maximums. He got 19 runs off the first over bowled by Luke Wood, setting the tone as he skilfully exploited the field restrictions in the powerplay to nab 92 runs.

Facing arguably the best bowler in the world, the Australian greeted Jasprit Bumarah with a six over log on, followed by a four in the second over. Replacing Wood, Nuwan Thushara also couldn’t stop MCGurk displayed his brute force, smashing three fours.

With his pacers being carted all over the park, MI skipper Hardik Pandya decided to introduce spin in the form of Piyush Chawla but it hardly mattered to McGurk, who struck a maximum over long-on to get his third IPL fifty. Striking out over 300, he took a special liking to Pandya as he clobbered the ball out of the park before sending one over deep mid-wicket as Abhishek Porel (36) had the best seat to enjoy the stroke-making, standing at the other end.

Chawala finally managed to put an end to the carnage with a googly. MI dominated for a couple of overs, with Mohammad Nabi picking up Porel in the 10th over. But Shai Hope (41) swung into action, hitting five sixes while Rishabh Pant (29) took out the helicopter. The DC skipper whipped the ball, which soared over deep mid-wicket.

Stubbs took DC past the 200-run mark. The South African continued his menacing form as he took Wood to the cleaners in the 18th over where he only dealt in boundaries. The over read 4 4 6 4 4 4. However, Bumrah came in with a bouncer in the next over to get Pant, who attempted a pull only to find Rohit Sharma at deep backward square leg.

Brief scores: Delhi Capitals: 257/4 in 20 overs (Jake Fraser-McGurk 84, Shai Hope 41, Tristan Stubbs 48 not out).

Summary

In a little over two months from now, curtains will come up on Paris Olympics 2024. With the excitement building around the Summer Olympics, here are things that you should know about the medals that will be presented to the athletes in Paris.

Each Olympic and Paralympic medal is set with a piece of original iron from the Eiffel Tower. Built between 1887 and 1889, the Eiffel Tower, has undergone numerous renovations. The design of the medals is the responsibility of the host city’s organizing committee. Medal Specifications:
Medal Specifications: The Diameter and the thickness of the three medals are fixed. The diameter is 85mm and the thickness is 9.2mm. The weight of the gold medal is 529gm, the weight of the silver medal is 525 gm and the bronze medal weighs 455 gm. (Image: Reuters)

These lines bring relief and sparkle to a medal. Setting the gem | Six metal appendages —one for each are used to fix the hexagon in place. This encrusting is possible due to the slightly concave shape of the medal, which adds depth to the design of each side. (Image: Reuters)
A traditional feature of the medals since 2004, the goddess of victory Athena Nike is represented in the foreground, emerging from the Panathenaic Stadium that witnessed the revival of the Olympic Games in 1896. The Acropolis of Athens, another compulsory feature of the Olympic medals, is joined by the Eiffel Tower for the first time in the Paris 2024 design.

The police in Maharashtra’s Thane district have busted an IPL betting racket by conducting a raid at a hotel in Bhiwandi, and arrested three persons hailing from Chhattisgarh in this connection, an official said.

The operation was conducted jointly by the officials of the Special Task Force and the Anti-Extortion Cell of the Thane police’s crime branch on April 25, Deputy Commissioner of Police Shivraj Patil said in a press conference on Friday evening.

Efforts are on to trace one more accused, who partnered with the arrested trio and operated the racket from Chhattisgarh, he said. “The police had received a tip-off that some persons were inviting people to place their bets on the ongoing IPL cricket matches. Accordingly, a raid was conducted at a hotel in Kongaon village in Bhiwandi between 7.30 pm and 11 pm on Thursday,” he said. The accused trio was caught taking bets on the match between Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Sunrisers Hyderabad.

They were making use of the mobile applications and collected a total of Rs 11,86,811 from people, the official said. The fourth accused, who operated from Chhattisgarh, collected Rs 7,03,000 from people on the bets, he said.”The trio had obtained SIM cards by forging documents. During the raids, the police seized 12 mobiles, one tablet and laptop each collectively valued at Rs 1.97 lakh from them,” Patil said.

Assistant Commissioner of Police Shekar Bagde said the police have launched an operation to nab the fourth who operated from Korba in Chhattisgarh. The arrested accused were identified as Shannu Lalit Berival (31), Rajat Babula Sharma (30) and Vijay Sitaram Devgan (40), he said. A first information report (FIR) was registered under Indian Penal Code (IPC) sections 420 (cheating), 465, 467, 468, 471 (all pertaining to forgery) and 34 (common intention) at the Kongaon police station, the official said.

Underlining their supremacy in non-Olympic compound archery, India grabbed a hat-trick of gold medals to make a clean sweep of team events at the ongoing World Cup Stage 1 in Shanghai here on Saturday.

India’s Jyothi Surekha Vennam, Aditi Swami and Parneet Kaur dropped just four points to trounce Italy 236-225 in the women’s compound team event to open their account with a gold in the season-opening global showpiece.

The men’s team of Abhishek Verma, Priyansh and Prathamesh Fuge went one step better as they missed just two points en route to defeating Netherlands’ Mike Schloesser, Sil Pater and Stef Willems 238-231.

The mixed team completed the sweep when the second-seeded Jyothi and Abhishek warded off a late resurgence from their Estonian rivals — Lisell Jaatma and Robin Jaatma — to win 158-157 in a thrilling finish.

This was a double gold medal for the reigning Asian Games champion Jyothi who is also in the hunt for an individual gold and will play her semifinal later in the day.

Priyansh is also in the hunt for an individual medal in the compound segment.

Medal rounds in the recurve section will be on Sunday and India are eyeing two gold from the Olympic discipline.

The Indian men’s team will take on Olympic champions South Korea in the gold medal clash.

Deepika Kumari is in fray for an individual medal and will play her semifinal against South Korean rival in the women’s recurve section.

The women’s compound team, who qualified as top seed, dropped just four points from 24 arrows to down sixth seeded Italy in the first match of the day.

In the first three ends of six arrows each, Jyothi, Aditi and Parneet missed the perfect 10 only twice to take a handsome 178-171 lead over Marcella Tonioli, Irene Franchini and Elisa Roner.

In the fourth end, the Indians dropped two points but it did not matter much as they nailed the gold with an 11-point margin.

The men’s team, who qualified as the fourth seed, put up a near flawless show to defeat their Dutch opponents.

They began with a perfect round of 60 and dropped just two points in the next two ends, before sealing the win with another perfect 60 in the final set of six arrows.

In the compound mixed team event, Jyothi and Abhishek took a three-point lead, starting off with a perfect round of 40.

The three-point drop in the first end proved decisive for Estonian archers who went on to shoot three perfect rounds of 40 each but the Indians held their nerves to seal the issue.

Leading 119-117, the Indian duo needed a minimum score of 39 points out of a maximum 40 in the final end. They did just that to wrap up the country’s third gold.
