Restored version of Shyam Benegal’s National Award Winner Manthan to be showcased at Cannes Film Festival

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

Manthan is the third picture that the foundation has restored in a row to be premiered at Cannes.

Shivendra Singh Dungarpur, the Founder of the Film Heritage Foundation (FHF), announced on Thursday that the restored version of legendary director Shyam Benegal’s 1976 film Manthan will be presented at the 77th edition of the Cannes Film Festival.

To restore the national award-winning movie that starred the late actress Smita Patil, FHF, a not-for-profit organisation teamed up with Gujarat Milk Marketing Federation Ltd.

Manthan is the sole Indian film selected for the Cannes Classics section this year. Naseeruddin Shah, the late Smita Patil’s family, the movie’s producers, and Shivendra Singh Dungarpur of the FHF will all be present for the film’s premiere.

Manthan will be played under Cannes Classics, a section dedicated to celebrations, restored prints and documentaries that was established 20 years ago, according to the Cannes Film Festival website.

Manthan is the third picture the foundation has restored in a row to be premiered at Cannes.

In 2022, FHF presented a restored version of G Aravindan’s 1978 Malayalam film Thampu at Cannes Classics. The previous year, in the same section, the restored version of Aribam Syam Sharma’s Manipuri film Ishanou was also shown.

Director Benegal told The Times of India (TOI) that Manthan was a film he was particularly passionate about because it was funded by 500,000 farmers.

According to him, it played a significant role in the development of a great cooperative movement that intended to empower farmers and free them from the restrictions of caste and economic inequity.

He went on to explain that the film would remind the world of cinema’s potential as a tool for change, as well as the lasting impact of Verghese Kurien, the Father of the White Revolution.

In an interview with TOI, Naseeruddin Shah said that he began his acting career with Benegal’s films Nishant and Manthan.

He continued by expressing his gratitude to FHF for their caring restoration of this small film, which was produced with the help of the farmers. Shah said that the film’s premiere at the Cannes Film Festival in its second life—as it should—was made possible by the “persistence, hard work, and efforts” of FHF. He went on to say that he would be present to present it himself.

Govind Nihalani, the film’s cinematographer, told the daily, “Being involved in the restoration has been an emotional experience.” Additionally, he claimed that it transported him back to 1976, when the entire group spent 45 days filming in the Gujarati village of Sanganva, living as a single family.

Finally, Dungarpur stated that since Shyam Benegal was one of India’s most renowned directors and his early work was influential in the country’s Parallel Cinema movement, the restoration of Benegal’s film had been on FHF’s wish list for years.

Manthan, India’s first crowdfunded film, is about a village’s transformational organisational revolution. Approximately 500,000 farmers contributed 2 apiece towards the film’s production.

The film chronicles farmers’ path towards forming a cooperative dairy society, while also painting an accurate portrayal of the hardships they confront inside the exploitative milk industry.

Manthan, also referred to as The Churning, embodies the spirit of the Indian White Revolution and is based on the real narrative of the revolutionary milk cooperative movement headed by Verghese Kurien.

Amitabh Bachchan, AR Rahman honoured with Lata Deenanath Mangeshkar award; Piku actor says, ‘I am fortunate’

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

The award was instituted by the Mangeshkar family in memory of melody queen Lata Mangeshkar after her demise on February 6, 2022.

Bollywood megastar Amitabh Bachchan and legendary musician AR Rahman have been honoured with the Lata Deenanath Mangeshkar Puraskar. The two stalwarts of Indian cinema were presented the award on April 24, Wednesday, at Mumbai’s Vile Parle to mark the memorial day of Deenanath Mangeshkar, the theatre-music veteran and father of the Mangeshkar siblings.

Singer Usha Mangeshkar presented the award to the Piku actor. Earlier, Asha Bhosle was expected to honour the star with the award but she couldn’t be at the event due to health concerns.

For the big day, Bachchan was dressed in an ivory kurta pyjama set paired with a multi-coloured shawl. Accompanying him for the event was his son Abhishek Bachchan.

Bachchan, in his speech, expressed heartfelt thanks, saying, “I’m fortunate to receive this award today. I never really regarded myself worthy of such an award, but Hridyanath ji tried hard so that I could come here. He even invited me to this ceremony last year.”

The actor even shared with the audience that his father, Harivansh Rai Bachchan, a celebrated Hindi poet, used to compare Lata Mangeshkar’s voice to ‘shehad ki dhaar’. The Baghban actor added, “The sweetness in her voice was honey and as the flow of honey never breaks, her ‘swar’ never breaks. Whenever someone hits the right chord, our soul meets with ‘parmatma’. And Lata Mangeshkar ji’s ‘swar’ joins us with God.”

Meanwhile, AR Rahman shared a photo on his social media handle, celebrating his achievement. The picture of the musician as he held the award in his hand was accompanied by a short write-up. “Honoured to get the #denanathmangeshkar award today. I adore the legacy of the Mangeshkar family and their dedication to art! #latamangeshkar #hridayanathmangeshkar #ashabhosle EPI (sic),” he wrote.

The Lata Deenanath Mangeshkar Puraskar was instituted by the Mangeshkar family in memory of melody queen Lata Mangeshkar after her death on February 6, 2022. The first recipient of the prestigious award was Prime Minister Narendra Modi, while Lata Mangeshkar’s sister Asha Bhosle bagged the award in 2023 for her contribution to music in Indian cinema.

Not too long ago, the teaser of Allu Arjun and Rashmika Mandanna-starrer Pushpa 2 : The Rule took the Internet by storm. Now, keeping the excitement intact, makers have dropped the promo of the first single from the film. The song, which explores the character Pushpa Raj, played by Allu Arjun, has been composed by Chandra Bose, while Devi Sri Prasad came on board to lend his voice, adding the thrill to the already electrifying track.

The lyrical promo of the song has Pushpa Pushpa Pushpa chants in the background while Allu Arjun spreads his magic on the celluloid. The promo boasts the eccentric style of the protagonist, delivering the adrenaline rush and leaving the fans excited about the song’s release. The makers also revealed that the song will be released on May 1, 2024, at 11:07 am.

The Pushpa 2 team, helmed by Sukumar, is leaving no stone unturned to create the hype around the much-awaited project. Months ahead of the release, the team unveiled the teaser of the movie on Allu Arjun’s birthday. The teaser showcased Allu Arjun in a never-before-seen avatar. Dressed in a saree, the actor wore heavy makeup and jewellery made of gold and flowers. His face painted in shades of blue and red further added to his enigma.

We gave some madness in the first film; in part 2, we know we have a responsibility because people have so much expectation from the film. We are constantly and consciously trying to deliver that.”

The Sukumar directorial will also witness Fahadh Faasil reprise his role from Pushpa 1, while Samantha Ruth Prabhu may play a cameo.

No commercials, just films: PVR Inox adopts ad-free movies amid declining theatre footfall

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

Cutting down the length of the ads slotted before a movie begins on the big screen from 35 minutes to 10 minutes, the company is looking to add extra shows.

Top multiplex chain PVR Inox has come up with another product to arrest the decline in footfalls in cinemas. They are offering ad-free movies just like a streaming platform.

Weak box office collections of movies have affected the theatre business with big Bollywood films also delivering sub-par performances in the last three months.

Cutting down the length of the ads slotted before a movie begins on the big screen from 35 minutes to 10 minutes, the company is looking to add extra shows.

“The time saved on each show will give us the room to add another show during the day, resulting in additional footfalls,” said Renaud Palliere, Chief of The Luxury Collection and Innovation, PVR INOX Limited, who added that additional admissions will trickle down to increase in food and beverage revenue.

Audiences will not see commercials even during intervals. Just trailers of upcoming movies.

“The advertising revenue loss will be compensated with the additional footfalls by having one more show. Admissions generate ticket sales as well as F&B sales,” Palliere said.

In Q3, the company reported a 23% year-on-year increase in advertising revenue at Rs 140.5 crore. However, analysts expect the ad revenue to decline by 15% in the March quarter of FY24.

However, there will be some brands visible during the reduced break time like Pepsi and Coke. “In the 10 minutes of content shown before the start of the film, there will be largely movie trailers. This is to focus on our products for which consumers are coming to cinemas. But brands like Pepsi and Coke we are keeping on the screen within the 10 minutes,” added Palliere.

The new product by the company is not for everyone as it has been launched across 40 luxury properties of the multiplex chain in Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, among others, effective from April 1.

“In this segment (premium screen) people are time conscious. Also, a lot of these ads were countrywide and were not focused towards that particular audience,” he added.

The initial feedback for ad-movies is showing higher recall value, said Palliere.

Ad-free content is available in PVR Inox’s premium formats like Director’s Cut and Insignia.

“We will soon be opening (ad-free movies) in Pune and very soon it will follow in other premium screens. Within the next few months, we are looking at extending beyond the current batch,” said Palliere, who is looking to increase the share of premium screens in the total screen portfolio of PVR Inox.

Premium screens make up 15% of the total 1,741 screens across PVR Inox properties. Palliere expects the share to go up to 20% in less than 24 months.

He added that the premium formats have not been as affected as regular screens due to the weak content performance of films from the beginning of 2024.

While the company has launched movies without commercial breaks after getting feedback from customers, Palliere said that the expectation of increasing the frequency of visits to theatres will help in improving footfalls which remains 25-30% lower versus pre-Covid levels across India’s theatres.

“From a luxury point of view, we are not seeing as much impact of the tepid lineup as the rest of the screens because the experience goes beyond movie watching. Luxury in many ways has shown resilience in terms of occupancy which is not fully impacted by the performance of movies. However, this (ad-free movies) will help improve admissions. Occupancy in premium format is in the high 20% to low 30% but it is not yet back to pre-Covid levels when it was in the mid-30s to high 30s (percent). This is because of volatility in content and box office earnings,” Palliere said.

Crime novelist Liz Nugent: ‘I’m never interested in the whodunnit, I’m more interested in why’

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

An exclusive interview with the award-winning author of the international bestseller Strange Sally Diamond on writing about abuse, the perils and perks of being a novelist in the age of social media, and more.

Dark psychological thrillers that explore childhood trauma and human depravity are not easy to write or read. And yet, Irish novelist Liz Nugent has carved an enviable career out of making domestic noir and sinister fiction accessible to readers around the world.

The winner of four Irish Book Awards and the James Joyce Medal for Literature, all her five psych thrillers—Unravelling Oliver (2014), Lying in Wait (2016), Skin Deep (2018), Little Cruelties (2020), and most recently, Strange Sally Diamond—have been chart-topping bestsellers.

Her latest book Strange Sally Diamond is inspired by the high-profile Josef Fritzl abuse case. A classic character study, it paints an unsettling portrait of why certain people behave the way they do and the extent of debilitating damage that exposure to early abuse can wreak on humans. A layered commentary on nature vs nurture, it will remind you of Emma Donoghue’s seminal 2010 novel Room.

In this exclusive interview, Nugent discusses the recent brain surgery that she underwent for her dystonia, why she thinks first novels are the easiest to write, her decision to tell the story of Strange Sally Diamond through two narrators, her distaste for shopping malls, why she prefers meeting friends over breakfast, and more.

How are you doing now after your minor brain surgery that was slated for December last year?

I have seen no improvement so far since my DBS operation, but my neurologist told me it could take six months to a year before I see a change and there is a chance it may not work at all. I choose to be optimistic.

How much does your background in film, theatre, and television help or inform your novel writing?

I would love for readers to visualize the chapters and characters in my books as scenes and real people, so I try to create as much visual incident as possible. I also try to carefully describe the surroundings of the locations so that readers can guess what a small rural Irish village or a town in New Zealand looks like. Also, I want to make it easy in case Hollywood, or indeed Bollywood, comes knocking.

Of your five books, which has been the most difficult and why?

Each one is harder than the one before because you think you’ve used up all your ideas, and I usually have to wait a long time for the well to refill. In some ways, the first is the easiest because you are not yet defined by a genre, and you are not working to a deadline. I nearly gave up on Sally Diamond so many times.

What is it that you desire more—popularity or critical acclaim?

Both are nice, and I’ve been lucky enough to have been well-reviewed and a number-one bestseller for each of my books. But if I had to choose, it would be popularity. I really love that so many people read my books. I write for them.

How much of Sally Diamond is autobiographical?

Very little, although Sally sometimes says things that I think. E.g. Why buy flowers for a funeral? The intended recipient is dead and it’s not like you can arrange to have funeral wreaths around your home. And like Sally, I am not a fan of giant shopping malls. The noise, the crowds, the brightness, and the unnecessary music are all too much for me.

Why was it important to have two narrators?

Sally does not remember any of her early childhood, so it was important to create Peter because he knows exactly what Sally’s childhood was like although he was too young and too brainwashed to understand the horror of it. Once I started to write Sally and Peter in two different timelines, I knew they were on a collision course to meet up. I didn’t know what would happen when they did meet until I got to that point.

It’s not easy to write about abuse. Did you have any rules or checks to ensure it doesn’t get too graphic or dark?

There are no graphic depictions of child abuse in the book. That is all implied. If I wouldn’t want to read that kind of thing, I certainly wouldn’t want to write it. The story is only as dark as the reader’s imagination. I also use humor a lot, so when things begin to feel heavy, I can lighten it up with some comic scenes.

What’s about the genre of psychological thriller that fascinates you?

I’m never interested in the whodunnit, I’m more interested in why. The choice that Peter makes at the end of the book is so wrong, but when we know how he has been raised, we might begin to understand it, even if we don’t condone it for a second.

What, according to you, is the biggest challenge of being a novelist today?

Social media is so distracting. Without it, I’m sure I would be much more productive. The benefit of it is that I can talk directly to readers. But sometimes, I’ll just drop in to check something, and two hours later, I’ll emerge fuzzy-headed, having wasted all that time when I should have been writing.

How has your writing process changed over the years?

I have learned a lot through the editing process and from reader’s feedback. Right now, they like relatively short books and short chapters (again, I blame social media for this). This trend may change.

I am still very undisciplined. If I have to meet somebody for lunch, then there will be no writing done that day. I am trying to convince friends to meet for breakfast so that I can still get a day’s writing done. That also means no wine which is a bonus.
