Hardik Pandya will be a different player in T20 World Cup, says Gavaskar

Legendary India cricketer Sunil Gavaskar feels there is no reason to get overly worried about Hardik Pandya’s bowling form going into the T20 World Cup, saying the all-rounder will be a “different player” in national colours. Pandya was retained as vice-captain of the 15-member squad announced by the BCCI on Tuesday despite his ordinary form for Mumbai Indians in the ongoing IPL.

The MI captain has scored 197 runs and taken just four wickets in 10 games with his team languishing in ninth spot. “There’s a big difference playing in the IPL and playing for your country. Playing for your country brings out something different in every player and Hardik Pandya will be a different player,” said Gavaskar on Sports Today.

“He’s had to face a lot of issues in this particular tournament (IPL), he’s handled it quite well. When he goes overseas and has to play for India, I think he will be in a completely different frame of mind. “And that’s going to be a much more positive frame of mind than maybe what we have seen here in this tournament. So, Hardik Pandya will make a contribution with both bat and ball in this tournament,” added Gavaskar.

Pandya was booed in the initial few IPL matches after he took over the Mumbai Indians captaincy from Rohit Sharma, who has guided the franchise to five titles. Gavaskar also felt, this Indian side has the capability to bring back the World Cup.

“They are title contenders, without a question. At the international level, sometimes you need a bit of luck and if this Indian team has just that little bit of luck, then I’m very confident that after 2007 (triumph), the T20 World Cup will come back to India.” The former India skipper felt all the players would be perfectly conditioned going into the mega event given that they would have played a lot of cricket in the IPL. “They’ll go with good rhythm (following the IPL); the bowlers would have bowled a fair bit of overs, the batters will have enough time out in the middle, some of them would have scored 80s, 90s 100s.

“So, clearly, this team will go with that little break… a week break (between the conclusion of IPL and start of the World Cup). With that little break, they will be a little bit refreshed, but at the same time not rusty.” The IPL ends on May 26 while India play their first World Cup match against Ireland in New York on June 5.

Australia honoured the memory of their late all-rounder Andrew Symonds as his children joined prominent members of the 2007 ODI World Cup-winning squad to announce the 15-strong line-up for the T20 World Cup in June, on Wednesday. Symonds was 46 when he lost his life in a car crash in 2022.

On Wednesday, his son Will and daughter Chloe joined the likes of Ricky Ponting, Adam Gilchrist, Michael Clarke and Glenn McGrath in a video announcement of the Australian squad for the upcoming showpiece in the USA and the Caribbean. Will announced the name of Ashton Agar and made a comment about new skipper Mitchell Marsh, whose name was announced by Ponting, the man who guided Australia to successive world titles in 2003 and 2007.

“I wouldn’t like to see the bowlers’ average after being whacked by Mitch,” Will said cheekily. Chloe joined in to name Mitchell Starc in the squad. “I would hate to be facing your bowling,” she said with a wide grin on her face.

One of the greatest in Australian cricket, Symonds was once described as the best fielder in the world by Ponting. He was part of two World Cup Australian teams but also grabbed headlines for his flamboyance off the field. He was also caught in an ugly controversy during India’s 2008 tour of Australia when he accused visiting spinner Harbhajan Singh of racially abusing him. Harbhajan was cleared of the charge after an inquiry.

The two later played together in the IPL for Mumbai Indians. Cricket Australia’s heartwarming gesture of remembering Symonds is the latest in the recent trend of off the beaten track squad announcements. New Zealand have been bringing in children to name their squads for showpiece events.

Rashid Khan-led squad to represent Afghanistan at T20 World Cup

Eight players featuring in the ongoing Indian Premier League have been named in the 15-member Afghanistan T20 World Cup squad to be led by star all-rounder Rashid Khan. Hashmatullah Shahidi, who captained Afghanistan at the 2023 ODI World Cup, has been left out of the squad named by the Afghanistan Cricket Board.

Left-handed opener Hazratullah Zazai, Sediqullah Atal and Mohammad Saleem Safi have been named as travelling reserves for the marquee event to be played in the USA and the Caribbean from June 2. Rashid, Azmatullah Omarzai, Noor Ahmad, Fazalhaq Farooqi, Naveen Ul Haq, Mohammad Nabi, Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Gulbadin Naib are the Afghan players currently playing in the IPL. The squad has only four batters in wicketkeeper Rahmanullah Gurbaz, Ibrahim Zadran, Najibullah Zadran and back-up keeper Mohammad Ishaq. But, six all-rounders have been named to make up for the lesser number of specialist batters.

Apart from Rashid, the other all-rounders are Azmatullah Omarzai, Mohammad Nabi, Karim Janat and Nangeyalia Kharote. Mujeeb-ur-Rahman and Noor are the other spinners along with Rashid, Nabi, Kharote. Right-arm fast bowler Naveen-ul-Haq, left-armers Fazalhaq Farooqi and Fareed Ahmad will man the pace department, along with the all-rounders.

Janat, Ishaq and Noor have been after missing the 2022 T20 World Cup. Afghanistan are in Group C in the 20-team tournament, along with New Zealand, co-hosts West Indies, Uganda and Papua New Guinea. They play their first match against Uganda on June 3 at Providence. Novak Djokovic splits with fitness coach in latest shakeup

World number one Novak Djokovic thanked his long-time fitness coach Marco Panichi for his years of service on Tuesday, signaling the end of their working relationship in the latest shakeup in the 24-times Grand Slam winner’s camp.

The Serb said last week that he was considering going without a coach after ending a five-year partnership with Croatian coach Goran Ivanisevic last month, following his early exit from Indian Wells.

The Italian Panichi joined Djokovic’s team as fitness coach in 2017.

“What amazing years of collaboration we’ve had. We reached the summit, won titles, broken records. But most of all, I have enjoyed our most ‘ordinary’ days of training in and out of the gym,” Djokovic wrote on Instagram.

“(Thank you) for all the energy, effort and time you invested in making me the best possible player and person I can be. Much love.”

Djokovic skipped the Madrid Open this year to focus on the Grand Slams and the upcoming Paris Olympics, but plans to compete in Rome.

Mitchell March to captain Australia’s T20 World Cup squad, Steve Smith axed

Mitch Marsh will captain Australia at the Twenty20 World Cup next month, leading a national cricket squad that is missing veteran Steve Smith and up-and-coming batter Jake Fraser-McGurk.

Marsh was confirmed as T20 captain on Wednesday after sharing the duties on an interim basis since the retirement last year of Aaron Finch.

Smith’s omission for the tournament starting June 1 in the United States and Caribbean means it’ll be the first time since 2012 he’s missed a World Cup in the limited-overs formats.

The 34-year-old Smith has signed for the Washington Freedom for the second season of Major League Cricket in the United States which starts July 4, four days after the T20 World Cup concludes.

Fraser-McGurk surged into selection calculations on the back of his 233.33 strike rate in the Indian Premier League, but it wasn’t enough to replace Travis Head or the veteran David Warner at the global tournament.

Allrounder Marsh will likely bat at No. 3 and Glenn Maxwell at No. 4 in the lineup, with Tim David likely to fill the finisher role further down the order.

“The batting options available allow a tailored approach to each venue and opponent,” Australia’s chief selector George Bailey said in a statement. “Steve Smith, Matt Short, Jason Behrendorff, Aaron Hardie, Spencer Johnson and Xavier Bartlett were all part of long conversations, along with several others, including Jake Fraser-McGurk who is yet to play T20 International cricket but continues to impress and is developing rapidly.”

Matt Wade and Josh Inglis were picked as wicketkeepers and Ashton Agar returns to the squad as a second spinning option to Adam Zampa.

The regular pace bowling trio of Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood will have support from Nathan Ellis as well as allrounders Cameron Green, Marsh and Marcus Stoinis.

Australia, the 2021 T20 World Cup champions, will open against Oman at Barbados on June 6. The Australians are the defending champions in the ICC’s World Test Championship and in the 50-over World Cup.
