Conscious consumerism is the future we need

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

In order to consume consciously, you ought to take stock of your possessions first and figure out which items you absolutely need, and which ones you can donate, sell or buy. You can plan your needs for the next 3-6 months.

Are you one of those who fancy living amidst greenery and wish to have a cleaner environment? Do piles of plastics and garbage lying on the streets bother you? Are you willing to do what it takes to nurture Mother Nature for our future? This article takes you through the practice of buying consciously, reducing waste and how you can take the first step towards it. Read on to find out more.

Audit of current possessions

In order to consume consciously, you ought to take stock of your possessions first and figure out which items you absolutely need, and which ones you can donate, sell or buy. You can plan your needs for the next 3-6 months, including food, clothing, utilities etc. Doing this will open up plenty of opportunities for thought, resulting in fruitful action. When you realise your buying pattern and how it has impacted your lifestyle and the environment, you are sure to take the next step cautiously.

Re-evaluate our source

Once you figure out what to buy, the next vital question is where to buy. Planning ahead gives you the time to identify truly sustainable brands and vendors and place orders with them. Performing due diligence puts you at an advantage in distinguishing brands that are genuinely sustainable from the ones that simply greenwash their way into enticing customers. Sustainable products are a result of eco-friendly products, processing and/or technology, hence doing minimal or no damage to the environment.

Another splendid way to shop responsibly is to buy in person and wholesale, wherever possible.

Going zero waste

Reducing waste generated at home, in terms of food waste, single-use plastics, processed food packaging, plastic cutlery, harmful plastic bags, bottles etc, can be an excellent way to be a conscious consumer. Reducing consumption by buying and selling pre-loved clothes and fashion items, reusing and putting products to their best possible use, and upcycling by finding a better use for the product can be some of the ways we can reduce consumption, thereby reducing demand for fast-produced products and preventing a part of the pollution.

Circularity

When waste is converted to a useful product, it is called circularity. For example, plastic is made from beeswax and paper is made from cow dung etc. Researching such products and buying them is a big service to the environment, as a consumer, since the product can be returned to nature after use or repurposed in a different form.

Value over volume

Indians are commonly known for shopping for value. It is because generally, we used to buy products only when absolutely necessary or during occasions. But, since the advent of fast fashion, social media and e-commerce platforms, buying has become an all-year-round activity. It is important to bring back the principle of buying a product of good value and using it for a long time, rather than shopping and hoarding numerous things without actually using them.

Revisiting our priorities before buying and making well-informed decisions can actually make a difference. Encouraging more people to consume consciously will bring about a great positive change.

Insensitivity | The phenomenon that changes the task of ‘governing’ to ‘ruling’

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

In today’s world, instead of invasions and colonisation, economic supremacy establishes itself by invading the territory of the less powerful (mostly in the developing nations), either by taking advantage of a globalised economy or politically through coercive trading concessions.

Rishabh Pant, who emerged from a blazing car, following a severe car accident is currently recovering at a hospital.  Unfortunately, the steady stream of visitors beyond the official visiting hours is not allowing the cricketer to get much needed rest, both physical and mental, shares his parents.

Again, during an earthquake or a flood, badly needed resources is diverted to manage VVIP visits to the affected site rather than the disaster management team to focus on the calamity itself. In today’s day and age, on ground live video coverage should be quite sufficient for senior authorities to support logistics and decision making. Sadly, while that seems the intent, the real reason for visiting is a PR activity.

Alarmingly, narcissistic leaders have come to recognise the potency of the social media to amplify their personalities and public image, and have taken to this new, like the proverbial ‘fish to water’.  A well-planned campaign thru media is orchestrated by a few well known planners who claim they are ‘King Makers’. Narratives is key here and he that controls it holds sway over the masses.

The inner drama

Psychoanalytically speaking where does such behaviour originate from? We are a country with a colonial past and have been ruled. Even post-Independence, and introducing secular democracy, our leaders continue to believe they are ‘rulers’. It is quite clear that those who gets perceived as contextually more powerful, invade the contextually less powerful. You see evidence of VVIPs invading citizens’ rights, and the primary task changes from governing as people’s representatives to ruling. VVIP’s travel in cars fitted with flashing red beacon, to allow faster right of way on crowded roads, even if it holds up a struck ambulance that tries to quickly access the emergency hospital. They breeze past bypass tolls, often when they are not allowed to, are whisked through security at airports, often delaying scheduled flights, and the more recent status of z class security. Even public works like a flyover to be opened, gets delayed as the cabinet minister from the centre is to inaugurate it and his schedules do not permit an early visit.

Today, instead of invasions and colonisation, economic supremacy establishes itself by invading the territory of the less powerful (mostly the Developing) nations, either by taking advantage of a globalised economy or politically through coercive trading concessions. Quite recently our Foreign Minister had to assert our own rights (import of oil from Russia) to take care of our own economic interests rather than take sides.

As invaders, to be free from the ensuring guilt, the myth of ‘inferiority–superiority’, perpetuated and alongside purity and pollution is added to embellish it even further. The Caste or Jati system entrenched in the Indian psyche permeates all regions in India. The feudal structures of the past, were established on authority and were in essence ‘to exploit the majority and any dispensation when provided, was merely to keep the majority healthy to produce wealth for the minority in the upper echelons’.  When the collectivity is disregarded and management is seen to be reserved for a group of senior personnel, others fall into roles of supervisors, while the bottom become ‘workers. The Stanford experiment, involving students as make-believe prison guards clearly illustrates how roles create unacceptable behaviour. In my work using organisational simulations (inspired by Barry Oshry) I have had direct experience of seeing this phenomenon play out repeatedly.

Our MLA’s (in reality public servants) act with complete impunity. Once elected, they pay scant attention to those that voted him to power but indulge in horse trading and negotiation that allows them access to power. Quite recently one has seen many elected governments at State level topple because of defection/movement of MLA’s to the other side.

Media exposes sensational crimes and excesses by a few but post the initial cacophony (‘the nation wants to know’) of debates in the media, the matter is soon put aside for the next upcoming sensation. The old phenomena appear like a circus, but while that is legitimate entertainment this is absolutely despairing.

The social media is rife with ‘emotionally charged’ perspectives. Every once in a while, we are witnessing malevolent forms of riotous protest, bus burning, arson and wanton destruction of public property. The practice once used to protest against the ‘invaders’ (British rule) continues to overhang in today’s democracy. India is a litigious country with court cases replete and taking years to complete. I aver, the case is not so much about finding justice and restitution as remedy – more a way of ‘vendetta’ seeking. This destructive authority breeds corruption (a short path to an easy life), destroying others opportunities to succeed (the Indian Crab syndrome), or polluting environment for one’s own ends. The Corporate world is not immune to this – there are enough incidents of inter-corporate rivalry, scant regard for environment as well.

There is much evidence of jealousy and envy about one’s rights, possessions, and privileges. Impatience and greed to make a ‘fast buck’ and achieve more power or fame. Promises are made to colleagues but not met. The gossip mongers abound, fanning the grapevine. Cowards show their face as bullies, and high-handedness and insensitivity become the privilege of those in supervisory power. One learns to laugh at jokes the boss cracks – even if they are poor.

Is it just a booze party night or a rising problem? Alcohol and its usage in India

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

Alcoholism is more common among males than women, with estimates putting the percentage of men who drink at 30% and the percentage of women who drink at less than 3%, respectively. Rural and urban regions have similar rates of increase in alcohol use. It’s interesting to see the spiral of alcohol usage commencing in transitional towns.

According to recent research, alcohol use is greater among men and women in rural India compared to urban India. Alcohol’s global consequences have been little documented in India compared to the West. There have been several individual and societal issues brought on by its widespread availability and usage over the last decade.

There has been a lack of cohesion and coordination in the response to the issue, which has hampered efforts to address it.

Due to inconsistencies in methodology, it is impossible to provide reliable figures for alcohol consumption in India. Alcoholism is more common among males than women, with estimates putting the percentage of men who drink at 30% and the percentage of women who drink at less than 3%, respectively.

Drinking Habits by State

Rural and urban regions have similar rates of increase in alcohol use. It’s interesting to see the spiral of alcohol usage commencing in transitional towns.

Also Read: Alcohol detox at home – a look at benefits and drawbacks

Many urban residents and younger people choose IMFL (Indian-made foreign liquor) and beer, while those living in the countryside are more likely to drink home-distilled liquor or rum. There are still certain groups, particularly in the northeastern portions of India, Goa, etc., where homemade brews are widely consumed. There are more male and female alcoholics in Arunachal Pradesh than in any other state.

For the ladies, the next most popular state after Arunachal Pradesh is Sikkim (16%), while for the guys it’s Telangana (43%). In addition to the states of Arunachal Pradesh and Telangana, the regions of upper Brahmaputra in Assam, the districts of Jharkhand and Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, and Odisha all have significantly higher rates of male alcohol consumption. The Scheduled Tribes have the highest rates of alcohol intake of any caste or tribe, with 33% of men and 6% of women reporting regular alcohol use.

Causes of Rising Alcohol Use

Recent studies show that there is a correlation between educational attainment, socioeconomic status, and drinking habits. High rates of alcohol use in low-income areas lead to higher costs, both directly and indirectly.

Also Read: The Magic of Merlot: Secret tips to master tasting the wine

However, there is a lack of data on the factors that lead to alcohol use. It is common for alcohol use to begin in the company of friends and family and then proceed to lonely, habitual drinking. Many people in low-income areas turn to alcohol as a means of relieving their physical and mental discomforts, including sleepiness, anxiety, and pain. Many different aspects of society, including masculinity, dominance, power dynamics, and business culture, have been connected to alcoholism as a social construct.

Here’s a reminder for you that anything done in extremes can get unhealthy for us. Everything in moderation is the way to go.

Dance your worries out with dance or movement therapy

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

Dance or movement therapy is a technique that involves dancing to the instructor/therapist’s guidance, whilst appealing to subconscious patterns and the depths of the mind. The methodology is similar to that of conventional therapy, it allows for the complete unhindered expression and body movement of the dancer, while the therapist captures the subtleties in the type of strokes and places of free and restricted movement.

Who doesn’t love to dance? All of us do! Since childhood, dance has been a thing of exquisite joy for all of us to witness and engage in. Although most of us have stopped dancing as we grew up, it still evokes delight in us, no matter how old we are or what situation we are in. Dancing brings out the inner child in us.

Would you believe if I say dance is a form of therapy that can be used to manage moods, stress, anxiety and mental illness? In this article, we will discuss at length, of dance therapy, how it’s done and its benefits.

Dance therapy

Dance or movement therapy is a technique that involves dancing to the instructor/therapist’s guidance, whilst appealing to subconscious patterns and the depths of the mind. The methodology is similar to that of conventional therapy, it allows for the complete unhindered expression and body movement of the dancer, while the therapist captures the subtleties in the type of strokes and places of free and restricted movement. The fluidity of the person’s body resonates greatly with that of their mind. The therapist’s instructions can be of two kinds: movements that bring about catharsis and unravel the pent-up emotion, and those that appeal to the unhealed areas of the person’s mind.

For example, for a person suffering from depression, the therapist can give plenty of jumping steps, as it pushes the person out of their regular state and encourages blood flow in different areas of the brain.

Who can take dance therapy?

Dance therapy can be taken by anyone who wants to unify their mind, body and spirit, since dancing is good as a physical exercise, calms the mind and heals the spirit.

If you are a person who wants to improve the quality of your life in general, you can definitely take dance therapy.

It also works out well to reduce stress, blood pressure, cognition (the ability to think and act) and social skills.

Since cancer has a major impact on the mind, dance therapy for cancer patients has been proven to have a significant positive impact on their mental and physical health.

For those suffering from depression, dance therapy is a gift sent from heaven, as it invigorates the body, brings out bottled-up emotions and boosts social skills.

Those with chronic heart diseases have also been known to benefit from dance therapy.

For those who wish to improve their self-expression, want to let go of body shame and learn to love the wonder their body is, dance therapy is the best way to go.

Lack of identity or self-esteem is something a lot of people face, either loudly or silently, impacting their personal and professional lives. Therapeutic dancing can work wonders in connecting body movements to feelings, connecting free-flowing body movements and fresh blood flow to positive feelings in the mind.

Although dance in itself is a great physical exercise, when done with the help of a therapist, it can make a difference.

  1. Creative Movement Therapy Association of India (CMTAI), Delhi
  2. Studio for Movement Arts & Therapies Trust (SMArT Trust), Bangalore
  3. East West Counselling Centre, Chennai

Awesome Assam: Sustainable tourism is at center of new policy that state recently unveiled

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

Awesome Assam: Sustainable tourism is at center of new policy that state recently unveiled

During the Assam Tourist Road Show 2022 held in November 2022, the state’s Tourism Minister Jayanta Baruah and numerous other cabinet members launched the new tourism policy, marketed under ‘Awesome Assam’.

In addition, a brand-new, all-encompassing website for Assam tourism was launched, providing visitors with convenient access to the industry’s many offerings.

Assam is a state in India that has a wide variety of landscapes, cuisines, cultures, rural landscapes, flora, and animals to offer those looking for a relaxing vacation. The tea plantations and golf courses might be catalysts for economic growth and environmentally responsible progress.

The new policy paper uses the words “sustainable” and “sustainability” thousands of times.

The goal of the Policy is to help the private sector in Assam that is involved in the tourist industry by developing a set of policies and strategic sitemap in conjunction with federal ministries, different state government agencies, local communities, and tourism stakeholders.

Some of the core strategic goals of the newly-launched Policy include increasing the sector’s contribution to Assam’s economy, ensuring year-round visitor numbers, encouraging travel to and spending in less-visited areas, promoting traditional cultural festivals, and creating new tourism-oriented goods that are both sustainable and responsible.

The Assam government is placing special importance on the tourist sector, which is expected to increase mostly due to private sector efforts.

The strategy is based on the principle that private companies should drive expansion in the tourism industry, with the government playing a supporting role.

The purpose of this new approach is to let the world see things as the attraction does. As a result of its abundance of natural attractions such unspoiled lakes, woods, mountains, and rivers, the state has almost endless potential as a tourist destination. The new strategy on tourism aims to achieve the same thing.

It’s impossible for Assam not to fascinate visitors, not with everything it has to offer. They have also developed unique offerings for potential financiers.

The Tourism Department will also assist hotel and resort operators in providing on-the-job training for local workers, with the goal of creating employment opportunities for young people in the area.

These initiatives will help women rise to positions of leadership in their organizations, and they will push businesses to make sure their female employees, especially those who work at night, have access to secure transportation and childcare.

Women in service industries (such as guiding, cooking, waiting tables, and driving) will be given priority in training, and businesses that actively recruit and retain women will be recognized.

Alcohol detox at home – a look at benefits and drawbacks

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

alcohol detox at home has several benefits. Although some individuals may be able to successfully detox at home, this does not mean that inpatient detox should be ignored completely. Patients without an appropriate home setting and those with severe alcohol dependence who are experiencing severe withdrawal symptoms are two examples.

Detoxing from alcohol is a critical first step on the road to recovery. However, due to alcohol’s impact on the mind and body, cutting down abruptly might be risky.

It is best to get help from a professional before attempting to cut down on drinking. In cases when it would be too expensive to attend regular meetings with a counsellor or therapist, such as when someone is isolated, alcohol detox at home may be an option.

Indeed, alcohol detox at home has several benefits. Although some individuals may be able to successfully detox at home, this does not mean that inpatient detox should be ignored completely. Patients without an appropriate home setting and those with severe alcohol dependence who are experiencing severe withdrawal symptoms are two examples.

Find out the benefits and drawbacks of home detox below.

Define alcoholism

The inability to control how much and how often someone drinks characterises alcoholism, the most severe type of alcohol consumption. Addiction to alcohol is very harmful and may have devastating physical implications.

Also Read: Cool cafes in Bengaluru where to you can work from

Those who suffer from alcohol use disorder, generally known as alcoholism, may fall into one of three severity levels. Pay attention to how your drinking habits affect your daily life and see if they cause any disruptions.

If this describes your situation, alcoholism is a strong possibility. Binge drinking may magnify the effects of any mental health issue to an extreme, so getting help as soon as possible is crucial. Some of the signs of alcoholism are:

  • Consistently using alcohol while failing to meet key duties at the job, school, or home.
  • Having to drink more of an alcoholic beverage to acquire the same effects as when you first started drinking.
  • Driving, swimming, and other potentially hazardous activities have all been attempted while under the influence.
  • Constant want to consume.
  • Intentionally endangering one’s health by drinking excessively while understanding the risks.
  • Suffering from withdrawal signs including trembling, chills, and sweating.

The negative effects of alcohol consumption on health are many and far-reaching. To a far greater extent than most other addictions, alcoholism may be fatal or cause serious health problems.

There are both immediate and long-term consequences of alcohol use, including brain shrinkage and heart damage, and an increased chance of developing malignancies of the throat, mouth, and liver.

Also Read: From Changlang in Arunachal Pradesh to J&K’s Ice Kingdom – 5 destinations ideal for Digital Detox

The effects of alcohol are felt almost immediately after the first sip is taken, and while you probably don’t need to worry about things like this when you’re just having a glass of wine with dinner every once in a while, the cumulative effects of drinking red wine, liquor, or spirits regularly can add up. The ripple impact of alcoholism extends into the larger community.

How can one go through alcohol detoxification?

During detox, the body strives to eliminate the harmful byproducts of alcohol usage. Heavy drinkers are at greater risk for experiencing unpleasant and perhaps life-threatening withdrawal symptoms both during and after detox.

Biological adaptations that increase tolerance to alcohol produce a state of false homeostasis, and resetting this equilibrium requires careful manipulation.

The very first step in treating alcoholism is detoxification from alcohol. There is usually a two-week window during which most withdrawal symptoms are at their worst. On the other hand, the length of time this takes may increase if you have a high AUD.

After this, you’ll go on to other aspects of treatment, such as physical therapy and talking to a therapist. Sometimes, withdrawal symptoms are seen throughout the detox phase. Their severity might range from barely perceptible to life-threatening.

A detox may cause mild symptoms such as:

  • Headaches
  • Sweating
  • Nausea
  • Insomnia \anxiety
  • The alcohol detox process is associated with serious health risks, including:
  • Deranged hallucinations
  • Seizures (may be deadly if no one is nearby)
  • Tremors \ disorientation

However, incidences like this are quite uncommon during detox.

Pros of a Home Detox Program

1. Decreased prices both now and in the future

It has been observed that people under the age of 35 who are alcoholics are particularly drawn to home detox programs. A group of alcoholics who haven’t yet sought treatment would typically do so at this time. If alcoholism is addressed early on, it will cost you less money overall. Mild and moderate alcoholism are less expensive to treat and fix if caught and treated early than severe alcoholism.

Hospitalisation expenses at specialised clinics or units. Services and equipment for treatment centers will be relatively pricey. When you detox at home, you may save a lot of money or perhaps avoid it altogether.

2. The global spread of the COVID-19 pandemic

The wide spread of COVID-19 has had profound effects on our culture. Numerous rules on social isolation and house arrest have been issued by the health department. Detoxing at home is acceptable during these difficult times. The respiratory illness known as COVID-19 is very threatening because of its rapid spread and potential to exacerbate the current crisis.

3. Restrictions for security

Detoxifying the atmosphere at home may be done methodically. Continue at your own speed. This is significant since it has been shown that disrupting one’s body’s pattern might have negative health effects. Alcohol may cause withdrawal symptoms if you suddenly quit drinking, so tapering is a good alternative.

4. A place where one feels at home and at ease

A person may go through detox without disrupting their daily life or leaving their friends and family. Detoxing at home has several benefits, including little disruption to normal life. Through their continued closeness, friends and family will provide the necessary emotional and practical support throughout the rest of the healing process.

5. Discrimination

Less social stigma than hospitalization or admission to a specialist’s clinic. There are usually a lot of stigmas associated with enrolling in a specialised treatment program. I’m worried about how getting help will be seen by my loved ones and the general public.

Many people who are struggling with substance abuse will opt not to enter a residential treatment facility or an outpatient program (home detox) for assistance. There are a lot of negative stereotypes about those who have addictions in today’s culture. It’s possible that many individuals lack empathy when they think about someone battling addiction.

As an example, the widespread belief that alcoholics are incapable of or unworthy of trust or genuine human connection. People are less likely to seek the assistance they need due to the stigma associated with doing so. One definition of a stigma is a mark of shame that permanently identifies the bearer. Particularly alcoholics, isolated from the general populace.

6. Preferred by females and younger alcoholics

Patients in vulnerable demographics, such as those who are young or female, may benefit from detoxing at home. The majority of people who successfully complete home detoxification are women (between a quarter and a third).

7. Detecting and treating severe server-preventable instances early on

Toxic drinkers are more likely to sign up for treatment sooner if they know they may detox at home. Due to its easy accessibility, detox may begin as shortly as you make the decision to give up alcohol. When compared to inpatient care and hospitals, which would need more preparation on your part, this is a more convenient option.

Consequences of a Self-Administered Detox

1.  Relapse is possible in a chaotic setting

A relapse is possible if there is conflict at home and the surrounding environment is unstable. A residence cannot be an excellent choice if it does not provide a secure and reliable setting for its residents. Recovering alcoholics benefits greatly from having solid supports in place, including meaningful relationships.

Infighting among loved ones may cause unnecessary stress and interfere with the detoxification process. Many people, mistakenly, believe that the only way to deal with alcoholism is medical. However, the mind plays a role as well. In order to grow and make detoxifying progress, you need a steady atmosphere.

2.  Not having access to medical help

The lack of access to timely medical attention in the event of an emergency is perhaps the largest drawback associated with alcohol detoxification at home. Possible severe withdrawal symptoms. Many different symptoms might arise from even a moderate usage issue.

Seeking medical assistance during alcohol detox is recommended at all times to help manage withdrawal symptoms. Alcohol detox requires medical supervision due to the severity of withdrawal symptoms.

This is highlighted particularly for those who already have a preexisting ailment, since the severity of problems like lung and heart disease may rapidly worsen. To be safe, you should inform those living with you that they should contact an ambulance if they see any of the following signs of alcohol withdrawal:

  • Seizures
  • lose your bearings
  • Suffer from severe hallucinations
  • Tremendous delirium (in rare cases)
  • Contrary to inpatient therapy, the likelihood of recurrence is increased in the absence of significant peer support. Higher degrees of care, treatment for unpleasant withdrawal symptoms, and other medical issues are all available during medically-supervised detox.

Inpatient therapy, often known as medically-supervised detoxification, provides patients with constant monitoring and assistance from medical staff. Addicts who have severely overused alcohol should seek inpatient care.

It’s also possible to get prescription drugs from a doctor to alleviate withdrawal symptoms if you feel you need them.

Detoxing at home is an option for those with mild alcohol dependence and no acute withdrawal symptoms. Consists of the patient being surrounded by people and things that are comfortable and familiar to them, which aids in their recuperation and provides emotional support.

As with inpatient detox, most people who undergo outpatient detoxification do it in the comfort of their own homes. To alleviate withdrawal symptoms, doctors may prescribe medicine to be used during therapy sessions.

Those with low to moderate drug users who have excellent social support networks and no other physical or mental health issues may be able to safely recover at home.

Unwind with Stone Therapy at these 4 spas in India

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

If you are looking for a relaxing retreat, want to reduce stress and anxiety, or treat a physical illness, you can take stone therapy. Stone therapy uses basalt, a volcanic rock since it can retain heat up to 170 degrees when heated under the influence of water.

Have you ever wanted to unwind completely, with a warm massage that feels like home? Do you want to improve your sleep, blow some steam after a hectic work period or just celebrate slow living? Stone therapy is an amazing option for you to try!

What is stone therapy?

The use of flat, smoothened stones made of volcanic rock, to give a warm and cold massage, by a trained masseuse for patients, to reach out to their tissues, relax them and offer relief to patients. Stone therapy uses basalt, a volcanic rock since it can retain heat up to 170 degrees when heated under the influence of water.

The stones are placed at different places on a patient’s body, such as the stomach, spine, chest, arms, palms, feet and toes. The heat from the stone is transferred to the outer layer of the skin first, upon remaining in the same position, the heat is transferred to the deeper tissues. Deep tissue massage and its manipulation might cause post-massage irritation for a few, but unless it causes discomfort, one need not worry.

Who can take it?

If you are looking for a relaxing retreat, want to reduce stress and anxiety, or treat a physical illness, you can take stone therapy. You do not need to have a medical history to take it. A hot stone massage can set you up for an exciting week ahead, after cooling off your stress from the previous hectic workweek. However, persons with diabetes and highly sensitive skin may choose to refrain from the massage or inform the masseuse beforehand.

Where can you take stone therapy?

Some of the best places in India to take stone therapy are as follows:

  1. Leela Palace, Jaipur
  2. Away Spa, Goa
  3. Veda Wellness Spa, Kochi
  4. Sukothai spa, Multiple Locations

How does it benefit you?

Stone therapy has a wide range of benefits. Since it traps heat, it can increase blood flow to parts of the body that house stress or pain, thus giving relief to the patient. Any muscle strain can be relaxed with the various strokes deployed by the therapist along with hot and cold stones. Stone therapy is a deeply calming experience that alleviates stress, and anxiety and works well for depression as well.

Also Read: 10 top bars in Delhi that you shouldn’t miss

The deep tissue massage gives a blissful level of comfort which induces deep sleep to its takers. Another notable benefit of stone therapy is its ability to treat fibromyalgia using stone therapy, where studies have shown that takers experienced less pain and more fluid body movements. The human touch paired with hot and cold stones has a profound impact on the tissues. Since tissues are directly impacted, the chances of the patient attracting cancer are reduced significantly.

Precautions to take

If you are prone to any skin disease or have diabetes, it is better to be upfront about it, than be sorry about it. If you experience any kind of pain during or after the season, informing the masseuse can help you remediate the discomfort at the earliest.

Right from the early days, the concept of Gurukul has been predominant in India, wherein students lived on school premises and did all chores to maintain and upkeep the place. They had to serve the place and the Guru to learn everything they needed to know. They went out to the woods to collect firewood, prepared food, built structures to safeguard their schools and maintained greenery on the premises and learnt their craft well. The forest schools in India, have similar principles for children.

What do children do and learn at a forest school

Children’s learning is decentralised and they learn from all their senses. Children engage in team activities like building a structure, gardening together, supervised risky activities like safe trekking, foraging, shelter building etc, where they use different tools, learn from each other, make way for creativity and inculcate social skills.

Activities like tree climbing, scavenger hunts, sensory walks and woodwork activate the kinesthetic sense of the children and enhance their mind and body coordination. They become more agile, aware of the environment around and develop a fondness towards Nature that has given them so much to enjoy. They also tend to develop an affinity towards fellow humans and learn to take care of one another in times of danger.

Apart from the Nature-led learning, these schools also are affiliated to the state/ central boards that allow their children to equip themselves like their peers in other schools.
