Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

The Nothing Ear (2) will be priced at Rs 9,999 and will be available on Flipkart, Myntra and select offline stores starting 28 March at 12 pm.

Carl Pei’s Nothing has added a fourth prodcut to its lineup by announcing the second generation of its active-noice cancelling Truly Wireless Stereo (TWS) earbuds — the Ear (2).

While similar in appearance it its predecessor, the Nothing Ear (2) packs many new features, the company said during an event streamed live across the world. The new earbuds sport the now-iconic transparent design, shorter ear stems, but better sound.

The company said the earbuds feature an 11.6 mm custom driver for deep, powerful bass and crystal-clear highs, and a new dual-chamber design that enhances the overall sound quality with smoother airflow. “Moreover, Ear (2) features Dual Connection for easy device switching, improved wind-proof and crowd-proof Clear Voice Technology, and Personalised Active Noise Cancellation that adapts to the unique shape of a user’s ear canal,” the company said.

“We are excited to introduce Ear (2) as a significant upgrade to our debut product Ear (1), which sold over 600,000 units,” said Carl Pei, CEO and Co-founder of Nothing. “With Ear (2), we’ve re-engineered everything from the ground up and utilised cutting-edge technology to create the ultimate personal listening experience.”

New Features in Nothing Ear (2)

Truly Authentic Sound: The company claims Ear (2) is Hi-Res Audio certified for a truly immersive sound experience that transports you to the recording studio.  Featuring an 11.6 mm dynamic driver with a custom diaphragm, Ear (2) boasts enhanced acoustic performance. The redesigned combination of polyurethane and graphene materials delivers even richer high frequencies and deeper, softer bass. Plus, the unique dual-chamber design creates a larger space for smoother airflow and even clearer sound.

Refined experience: Nothing says Ear (2) is a mighty refinement compared to Nothing’s first-generation audio product. “It provides users with a more personalised and seamless listening experience, catering to their everyday needs. Including Dual Connection, Personal Sound Profile, and Nothing’s most advanced Clear Voice Technology and Active Noise Cancellation yet.”

Dual Connection: Ear (2) offers Dual Connection, which allows users to connect to two devices simultaneously and seamlessly switch between playing music or receiving calls.

Personal Sound Profile: Ear (2) allows users to create a Personal Sound Profile with their hearing ID. After taking a hearing test in the Nothing X app, Ear (2) adjusts the equaliser levels in real-time to match the user’s hearing for an optimal listening experience.

Clear Voice Technology: With three high-definition microphones on each earbud and an AI noise reduction algorithm that can filter out over 20 million sound samples, Ear (2) can eliminate background noise and enhance the user’s voice during calls in real-time, says Nothing.

Active Noise Cancellation: Ear (2) is engineered with Nothing’s best noise cancellation technology yet, achieving up to 40 dB of noise reduction. With Personalised Active Noise Cancellation tailored to the exact shape of a user’s ear canal and Adaptive Mode that automatically adjusts the noise reduction level based on your environment in real-time, Ear (2) provides the optimal noise cancellation experience.

Enhanced Performance: Ear (2) can deliver up to 36 hours of music playback after a full charge of the charging case (with ANC turned off). With fast charge, it can deliver up to eight hours on a 10-minute charge. Ear (2) also supports wireless charging up to 2.5W and can reverse charge on compatible devices like the Nothing Phone (1).

Ear (2) is built to withstand everyday needs with an IP54 water-resistance rating for its earbuds, while the charging case is IP55 for extra peace of mind.

Ear (2) has press controls to avoid any accidental touches and discomfort of tapping into the ear canal. Users can skip tracks, switch between noise cancellation modes, and adjust volume — all with a press. The controls can be customised for individual needs in the Nothing X app — available to download from the Google Play Store and the App Store.

Quick Connection: Ear (2) supports Google Fast Pair on Android devices and Microsoft Swift Pair on Windows devices. Once connected to the Phone (1) in Game Mode, the earbuds will automatically turn on Low Lag Mode for an enhanced gaming experience. For non-Phone (1) users, they need to manually turn on Low Lag Mode in the Nothing X app.

Price and Availability

The Nothing Ear (2) will be priced at Rs 9,999 and will be available on Flipkart, Myntra and select offline stores starting March 28 at 12 pm.

Nothing Ear (2) Review: The sound of music

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

With the Ear (2), Nothing has not only made one of the best sub-10k TWS earbuds, but also one of the best out there that can compete with some of the best, more expensive earbuds. For a company that is less than three years old, with a release history of about two years, Nothing has come a long way. I for one am excited to see how the Phone (2) will shape up.

Nothing, the company founded by tech wunderkind Carl Pei, has just released the Ear (2) with a familiar design but a host of new features, including adaptive active-noise cancellation.

I’ve had the Truly Wireless Earbuds (TWS) earbuds for about 10 days and to borrow a phrase from Apple, it just works.

Rarely do I come across a product that works as advertised. But Nothing has truly delivered on its promise with the Ear (2), which features a custom 11.6 mm driver, and, according to the company, was assembled using custom moulds.

Let me break this review down into five parts — sound quality, adaptive ANC, call quality, battery life, and aesthetics.

Also Read: OnePlus Buds Pro 2 review: Solid pair of earbuds with some room for improvement

Sound quality

Nothing has gone above and beyond to deliver a truly excellent sound experience — especially for the price you pay, Rs 9,999. Based on how you customise your sound profile, the Ear (2) delivers rich bass, clear trebles and perfect mids. Thanks to the adaptive ANC — which I’ll come to in a bit — this makes for a truly immersive sound experience, whether you’re listening to music, watching a movie or show, or speaking to someone. It feels like you’re in the room with the sound all around you.

Adaptive ANC

This is by far my favourite feature of the Ear (2). Adaptive ANC is the opposite of adaptive transparency on the Apple AirPods Pro Gen 2. Where the latter detects ambient noise and tamps down the transparency so that you don’t deafen yourself, the Ear (2) does the opposite — it detects environmental noise and intelligently adjusts the ANC to provide you the best, quiet listening experience. I’ve tried it out in malls, crowded areas, an airport and an airplane, and it works without a hitch. Like most other ANC earbuds, it has difficulty filtering out the higher frequency sounds — like a toddler screaming her lungs out — but gets it right every single time.

Call quality

This is another impressive implementation by Nothing. Touting its Clear Voice Technology, Nothing claims the Ear (2) can filter out 20 types of environmental noises. This apparently includes a loud air cooler — I made a call to a colleague sitting right in front of said air cooler at full blast; neither the colleague could detect any drop in call quality due to the air, nor could I struggle to hear the colleague speak, thanks to the excellent ANC.

Battery life

Battery is notoriously difficult to judge if it works as advertised. In my experience, with ANC turned on, I got about five hours out of a single charge before I had to pop the earbuds back into the case for a quick juice-up. So, for the most part, I suppose the battery life works, but only time will tell if this holds up.

Also Read: Nothing Phone (1) mid-term review: Still quite something and never boring

Aesthetics

The Nothing Ear (2) look remarkably similar to the Ear (1) with a few, transparent design flourishes that help it stand out. For one, the ear stems are shorter, which means a shorter battery life, but the company has compensated for that by including a bigger battery in the case. It’s quite easy to find the tactile button that will help you skip, pause music and take and end phone calls. However, I wish Nothing had retained the touch controls from Ear (1) wherein you could increase or lower the volume by sliding your finger up or down the earstem. I understand why the feature was removed, but I still miss it.

What else?

Fast Pair, Swiftpair, and dual connection work as well as they can. I was able to switch between watching a movie on my laptop to taking a call, ending that call, and switching back to the movie without any trouble. And Fast Pair adds the earbuds to your Google ID — every device that you sign in on using that ID will automatically have the buds paired.

In conclusion

With the Ear (2), Nothing has not only made one of the best sub-10k TWS earbuds, but also one of the best out there that can compete with some of the more expensive high-end earbuds. For a company that is less than three years old, with a release history of about two years, Nothing has come a long way. I, for one, am excited to see how the Phone (2) will shape up.

Homosexuality Ban | A look at 5 major anti-gay countries

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

As Uganda passes a new law that would criminalise people who identify as gay, here’s a look at a few other nations that have banned homosexuality. In Saudi Arabia, a two-time ‘offender’ can be executed.

There has been a dramatic increase in public acceptance of homosexuality, as well as same-sex marriage in the last few years across the globe. But, there are as many as 70 countries that have laws that criminalise homosexuality, and nearly half of these are in Africa.

In many countries, laws that criminalise homosexuality can be traced back to colonialism. Out of the 53 former British colonies — 36 have laws that criminalise homosexual relationships. Breaking these laws could be punishable by extended prison sentences.

However, the situation regarding homosexuality and LGBTQ rights in these countries can vary, and some have taken steps towards decriminalisation and acceptance in recent years. But, at the same time it is important to note the most prominent anti-gay countries.

ALSO READ | Life that Matters: Same sex parenting — a challenge that haunts the new age

1. Uganda

Uganda’s parliament has recently passed a new law that would criminalise people who simply identify as gay. The archaic law, which has grabbed headlines globally, has sparked fear among the sexual minority community. The anti-homosexuality Bill was passed with widespread support in Uganda’s parliament. The new law essentially compels friends, family and members of the LGBT community to report individuals in same-sex relationships to the authorities.

2. Saudi Arabia

Relations between people of the same sex can be tried as capital crimes in Saudi Arabia. The punishment for homosexuality can even be public flogging. While the sentence for first-time offenders is lashing or some prison time, those caught more than once can also be executed.

3. UAE

In the United Arab Emirates, all sexual activities outside of  marriage are illegal and those convicted can be imprisoned for up to a year. Interestingly, UAE’s penal code is not explicitly clear about homosexuality being a capital crime or not.

ALSO READ | Sri Lanka may decriminalise homosexuality — being gay is a crime in these countries

4. Pakistan

Homosexuality is illegal in Pakistan and it’s a taboo topic. Pakistan’s penal code states that carnal intercourse against the order of nature — which includes homosexuality — is punishable by a fine and/or imprisonment from two years to life.

5. Afghanistan

Homosexuality is completely banned and same-sex relationships are perceived as immoral and un-Islamic in the country. Members of the LGBT community can even be executed under local Sharia law.

CCI approves LIC AMC’s acquisition of management rights over IDBI MF schemes

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

The proposed combinations involves LIC Mutual Fund Asset Management Limited acquisition of the rights to manage and administer the schemes of IDBI Mutual Fund (IDBI MF) from IDBI Asset Management Limited (IDBI AMC).

The Competition Commission of India (CCI) on Wednesday, March 22, 2023, approved the proposed combination involving LIC Mutual Fund Asset Management Limited’s acquisition of the management rights over the schemes of IDBI MF from IDBI Asset Management Limited.

The proposed combinations involves LIC Mutual Fund Asset Management Limited acquisition of the rights to manage and administer the schemes of IDBI Mutual Fund (IDBI MF) from IDBI Asset Management Limited (IDBI AMC). LIC Mutual Fund Trustee Private Limited acquisition of the rights of trusteeship of the schemes of IDBI MF from IDBI MF Trustee Company Limited.

Consequently, the schemes of IDBI MF will form part of LIC Mutual Fund with LIC AMC acting as the asset management company for the schemes of IDBI MF and LIC Mutual Fund Trustee Private Limited (LIC TC) acting as the trustee company of the schemes of IDBI MF.

As part of the consideration for the steps set out above, apart from lump sum consideration, IDBI AMC will also acquire a certain non-controlling shareholding in LIC AMC.

Also Read: Governance at Adani Group has a ‘moderately negative effect’ on ratings, says S&P Global Ratings

Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC) is the sponsor of LIC Mutual Fund (LIC MF). LIC is the ultimate parent company of LIC AMC and LIC TC. LIC AMC and LIC TC belong to the LIC Group. LIC AMC acts as the asset management company to LIC MF, while LIC TC acts as the trustee company of LIC MF in India. LIC AMC acts as an investment management advisor to LIC MF. It manages the investment portfolio and provides various administrative services to LIC MF.

IDBI Mutual Fund on December 30, 2023, signed an agreement with LIC Mutual Fund to transfer its schemes to the latter. The scheme of transfer agreement was signed between IDBI MF and LIC MF for the transfer of Schemes of IDBI MF to LIC MF to comply with Regulation 7B of SEBI Mutual Fund Regulations.

Mutual fund rules prohibit a single promoter from owning more than a 10 percent stake in multiple asset management companies. The insurance major LIC, which took over IDBI Bank in 2019, ended up holding a majority stake in both LIC MF and IDFC MF. Hence, the life insurer had only two options — either to sell one of the mutual funds or merge the two.

Economists believe the US Fed may hike a maximum of 50 bps in the next two policy meets

Summary

Hemant Mishra, Co-founder, and Group CIO of SCUBE Cap and CEO of SCUBE Asset Management said that the US Fed may hike a maximum of 50 bps in the next two meets.

All eyes will be on the key US Fed rate hike decision tonight. Market is expecting a 25-bps hike with dovish commentary. According to CNBC Fed survey, 86 percent expect rate cuts or a pause by July.

After the European Central Bank (ECB) announced a 50-bps rate hike as planned, there is a sign that Fed will likely raise rates in upcoming Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) meet, as both stay on track to tame inflation. However, rate expectations have been rapidly quivering over the last few weeks.

In an interview with CNBC-TV18, Hemant Mishra, Co-founder, and Group CIO of SCUBE Cap and CEO of SCUBE Asset Management said that the US Fed may hike a maximum of 50 bps in the next two meets.

He said, “The tighter lending standards that will happen on the back of the run that some of the banks have seen, anyway, would have meant a hike between 50 bps and 150 bps. So, the Fed is not required to hike much more than 25 bps and maybe another 25 bps later. But as I mentioned, it’s a marathon. It’s not a sprint. It makes sense for them to do a 25 bps and then pause.”

Former RBI Governor Raghuram Rajan, in an exclusive interview with CNBC-TV18, said that a pause in the next Fed meeting looks like a low probability and 25 bps hike still looks like a strong possibility, 50 bps is off the table.

Meanwhile, Srinivasan Varadarajan, Non-Executive Chairman of Union Bank of India said that the central banks are playing a critical role in safeguarding the financial system. They are providing backstops to ensure that things don’t worsen from here. Their measures are aimed at preventing a complete collapse of the market.

Cryptocurrencies face harsh criticism in White House report

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

The White House’s Economic Report of the President stated that crypto assets are neither an ‘effective alternative to fiat money’ nor do they ‘make payments more efficient,’ with an entire chapter devoted to risks of cryptocurrencies.

In a scathing criticism of digital assets and cryptocurrencies, the White House stated in its new report that crypto assets are neither an “effective alternative to fiat money” nor do they “make payments more efficient,” a common argument that is used by proponents of the same. The report added that instead, such digital assets are creating new issues for consumers as well as the financial ecosystem as a whole. The comments were part of the March 2023 issue of the annual The Economic Report of the President. The report is prepared by the White House Council of Economic Advisers.

The 513-page report contains an entire chapter on the risks of cryptocurrencies. The report usually signals the priorities and the economic policies that the president of the world’s biggest economy is going to be focusing on.

With crypto assets soaring in popularity over the course of COVID-19, the market for cryptocurrencies and digital assets expanded rapidly without legislation being able to catch up in time. However, regulators across the world are now looking to rein in the crypto industry, a fact that has spooked many in the industry. The recent collapse of TerraUSD and Bitconnect, along with the failure of FTX and Signature Bank, only serve to highlight the unregulated risks in the space.

The report argues that despite its many purported benefits, the crypto industry has been unable to deliver on its promises. “It has been argued that crypto assets may provide other benefits, such as improving payment systems, increasing financial inclusion, and creating mechanisms for the distribution of intellectual property and financial value that bypass intermediaries that extract value from both the provider and recipient. Looking under the hood at these arguments, however, shows a more complicated picture. So far, crypto assets have brought none of these benefits,” the report said.

The report also added that the blazing fall of crypto assets from a peak market cap of over $3 trillion to just under $1 trillion within a period of less than a year serves to highlight the fundamental issues with cryptocurrencies. “It largely reflects the failures of certain prominent crypto asset projects and firms,” the report states.
