PM Modi’s France visit to go beyond defence deals, says former ambassador

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

Rakesh Sood, former Ambassador of India, told CNBC-TV18 that the longstanding partnership between India and France in the space sector dates back to the 1970s. He also highlighted the increasing number of Indian students pursuing higher education in France.

Rakesh Sood, former Ambassador of India, believes that Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to France will not solely focus on defence matters but may also explore opportunities in the field of space technology and people-to-people connections.

Modi’s visit to France on July 13 and 14 comes after receiving an invitation as the Guest of Honour at the Bastille Day Parade from French President Emmanuel Macron. During his visit, the Prime Minister will engage with other French leaders, including Elisabeth Borne, Gerard Larcher, and Yael Braun-Pivet. Furthermore, he plans to meet with the Indian community in France and prominent CEOs from both countries.

Sood told CNBC-TV18 that the longstanding partnership between India and France in the space sector dates back to the 1970s. He also highlighted the increasing number of Indian students pursuing higher education in France.

“Defence is not going to be the only thing, I think we will probably see some announcements in the field of space cooperation. France has been an old partner in the field of space right from the 1970s onwards. So that is an area where we could probably see some developments or announcements. Third area could well be in the field of people-to-people connect. We have seen a boost in Indian students going to France for higher education. It used to be around 3,000 students per year, the idea was to take it up to 10,000 students by 2025, I understand that the target has already been crossed and now people are looking at increasing it to 20,000 over the next five years or so,” Sood said.

Notably, on Thursday, India’s defence ministry approved the proposed procurement of 26 Rafale marine aircrafts and cleared the acquisition of three additional Scorpene submarines. The Indian Navy seeks to obtain these 26 deck-based fighter jets for deployment on the indigenously-built aircraft carrier INS Vikrant.

Retired Captain DK Sharma, former spokesperson for the Indian Navy, believes that India’s defence sector has made remarkable progress in recent years, prioritising the enhancement of indigenous capabilities and reducing reliance on imports.

“Our own logistics is very robust. There are many MSMEs which have been brought in and have been encouraged to supply the spare parts and other machinery which are of international standards. So the indigenous content (IC) is increasing by the hour and the import dependency is going down. So we are going to reap huge advantage if we get this. This is a clear win-win in my opinion,” Sharma said.

Health, education, economic growth, environment continue to be critically impacted by the lack of sustainable sanitation.

Starting in 2014, after Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s clarion call for Swachh Bharat, India embarked on what is the biggest sanitation drive in the world. To achieve universal coverage, in an earnest conviction for the National Abhiyan, in 2019, Harpic and Network18 launched Mission Paani in India. And soon created a global splash at World Water Week 2019 in Stockholm.

It unveiled the first of its kind Sanitation Pledge and Preamble at the Rashtriya Swachhata Kendra starting a high-impact conversation around sanitation security, behavioural change, immediate and effective policies and empowerment of sanitation workers.

In 2022, the campaign entered into a third year with a renewed focus on sanitation, cleanliness and a push for clean and hygienic toilets.

The campaign initiated a dialogue on sanitation empowerment with government leaders, sanitation warriors and celebrities, policy experts and citizens making an appeal for a right to dignity.

The big moment came, when the President of India, Draupadi Murmu complemented Mission Swachhta Aur Paani for championing a national cause to make sanitation a nationwide campaign.

PM Modi says treating sports as extracurricular activity caused huge loss to country

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

The prime minister said that at one time sport was considered as a means of passing time and so the mentality that games are not important took root, as a result a lot of talents kept away from the playgrounds.

Treating sports merely as an extracurricular activity had caused a huge loss to the country, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said Wednesday while inaugurating a sports event where he also urged athletes to include millets in their diets.

The pitch for the coarse grain comes as the world marks 2023 as the International Year of Millets.

The prime minister said that at one time sport was considered as a means of passing time and so the mentality that games are not important took root, as a result a lot of talents kept away from the playgrounds.

But this mentality is changing now, he said.

He also advised sportspersons to include yoga in their daily life to stay fit.

“Every sportsperson knows how important it is for him to remain fit, and ‘Fit India Movement’ has its role in this. For fitness, all should include yoga in their lives…it will make them healthy and also help keep the mind alert,” the prime minister said after virtually inaugurating the second phase of ‘Saansad Khel Mahakumbh 2022-23’ in Basti.

The first phase of the competition was organised from December 10 to 16, 2022 and the second phase which began on Wednesday will continue till January 28.

Underlining the importance of millets popularly called ‘mota anaj’ (coarse grain), the PM said that “nutritious diet is also important for players, and millets can play an important role in this. On India’s request, 2023 has been declared as the International Year of Millets”.

Prime Minister Modi, who also watched the first event of the competition ‘kho-kho’, said the talents participating here exist in all parts of the country and such an event helps find out them.

The PM regretted that at one time sports were considered as an extracurricular activity, and this caused a huge loss to the country.

“There was a time when sports used to be considered as an extracurricular activity. They were considered only a means of passing time. The children were also told the same. Due to this, generation after generation, a mindset developed in the society that sports are not so important. This mentality has caused a huge loss to the country,” he said.

“Many talents remained away from the field. But in the last eight years, the country has left behind this old thinking. Work has been done to create a better environment for sports, so now more children and youths are looking at sports as a career option,” he said.

“It’s heartening that even parents are now taking sports seriously,” the prime minister said.

He said that the direct benefit of this change in people’s thinking is visible as India is constantly creating new records in the field of sports,” he said .

“We gave the best ever performance in the Olympics. Best ever performance in the Paralympics. India’s better performance in different sports is now becoming a topic of discussion. This is just the beginning. We still have a long way to go,” he said.

“This ‘Khel Mahakumbh’ will give new opportunities to young players. I am told that about 200 MPs in India have organized similar sports events in their respective places in which thousands of youths have participated,” he said, adding that in his parliamentary constituency Varanasi also, such events have started.

The prime minister also lauded girls performing well in the sports and made a mention of the spectacular showing of Shefali Verma in women’s Under-19 T-20 hitting 26 runs in an over with five fours and one six.

Stressing that the government was encouraging sportspersons at all levels, the PM said “the government is also providing financial assistance to the players. At present, there are more than 2,500 athletes in the country who are being given more than Rs 50,000 every month under the ‘Khelo India’ campaign”.

The players performing well in Saansad Khel Mahakumbh are being selected for further training at the Sports Authority of India centre and this will benefit them a lot, he said.

“Our players should have adequate resources, training and international exposure…all these aspects are being worked upon,” he said.

PM ‘violating’ model code by taking out roadshow during polling; EC ‘afraid’, ‘under pressure’: Congress

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

The Congress on Monday accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of violating the model code by taking out a roadshow before casting his vote in the second phase of polling in Gujarat and alleged that the Election Commission is “afraid” and is “under pressure” not to act against him.

The Congress on Monday accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of violating the model code by taking out a roadshow before casting his vote in the second phase of polling in Gujarat and alleged that the Election Commission is “afraid” and is “under pressure” not to act against him.

Congress head of media and publicity Pawan Khera said the Congress has seen that over the last several weeks, inaction on the part of the Election Commission is evident from the watchdog of our democracy, the watchdog of our elections.

“We have been making representations to the Election Commission at various levels. Every second or third day we have made some representations or the other in Gujarat, in Delhi, but, I am afraid the Election Commission looks like it is willingly under pressure,” he told reporters.

The Congress leader said the party is deliberating on taking necessary legal measures on the issue.

Khera said the value of the vote of the prime minister or that of any common man is the same. “But how is it that the PM holds a roadshow fo 2.5 hours when he goes to vote,” he said.

“What are the compulsions of the Election Commission that it cannot see any violations by the prime minister,” he said.

He said in the second and the last round of polling in Gujarat, Prime Minister Modi while voting in Ahmedabad decided to do a roadshow of two and half hours which was covered live by all channels free of cost.

“Is this not an advertisement? Shouldn’t you be charging the BJP, why you are doing it for free,” he asked.

“We will take necessary steps, and prevail upon the Election Commission of India through whatever means possible, legal means possible, to ensure that such publicity comes under the purview of election expenditure of the party, which undertakes this publicity, which forces you to run these roadshows live, especially when the election is under way,” he also said.

The Congress leader also alleged that its tribal candidate and sitting MLA of Danta in Gujarat, Kantibhai Kharadi, wrote to the Election Commission seeking additional security as he apprehended a threat to his life.

he was attacked by 24 people, who he alleged were ‘goons’ of the BJP and he had to take cover of the forest at night, where we finally rescued him at 2.33 am.

“The Election Commission did not pay timely attention to his pleas. We have also shared time and again visuals of the BJP distributing liquor in a state, where there is a prohibition, openly, shamelessly and distributing liquor in their vehicles with BJP logos on the vehicles. They are not afraid,” he claimed, questioning the EC’s “silence” on such violations.

Khera alleged that the EC has not acted on the Congress’ complaints so far on several violations made against the BJP in Gujarat.

“The government, the party, the administration, the election machinery, everything is rolled into one, in Gujarat. The logo of Gujarat government should now be Kamal (Lotus). That’s the situation of governance in Gujarat, that’s the situation of the election machinery in Gujarat. We beseech upon you, we request you to please join hands with us in saving democracy. Democracy will be a thing of the past, if we don’t act today,” he said.

“The BJP is continuously violating the model code but the EC is not acting against them and has turned silent. It seems the EC is afraid of taking action,” he also said.

The second phase of polling in Gujarat was held on Monday and the results will be out on December 8.

‘One Earth, One Family, One Future’: PM Modi says India’s G20 presidency will promote universal sense of oneness

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

India’s G20 agenda will be inclusive, ambitious, action-oriented and decisive, says PM Narendra Modi. This piece first appeared in PM Modi’s blog.

Today, India commences its G20 presidency. The previous 17 presidencies of the G20 delivered significant results: Ensuring macroeconomic stability, rationalising international taxation, and relieving the debt-burden of countries, among many other outcomes. We will benefit from these achievements and build further upon them.

However, as India assumes this important mantle, I ask myself – can the G20 go further still? Can we catalyse a fundamental mindset shift, to benefit humanity as a whole?

I believe we can.

Our mindsets are shaped by our circumstances. Through all of history, humanity lived in scarcity. We fought for limited resources, because our survival depended on denying them to others. Confrontation and competition – between ideas, ideologies and identities – became the norm.

Unfortunately, we remain trapped in the same zero-sum mindset even today. We see it when countries fight over territory or resources. We see it when supplies of essential goods are weaponised. We see it when vaccines are hoarded by a few, even as billions remain vulnerable.

Some may argue that confrontation and greed are just human nature. I disagree. If humans were inherently selfish, what would explain the lasting appeal of so many spiritual traditions that advocate the fundamental one-ness of us all?

One such tradition, popular in India, sees all living beings, and even inanimate things, as composed of the same five basic elements – the panch tatva of earth, water, fire, air and space. Harmony among these elements – within us and between us – is essential for our physical, social and environmental well-being.

Also Read:G20 presidency big opportunity for India, must utilise it for global good: PM Modi

India’s G20 presidency will work to promote this universal sense of one-ness. Hence our theme: One Earth, One Family, One Future. This is not just a slogan. It takes into account recent changes in human circumstances, which we have collectively failed to appreciate.

Today, we have the means to produce enough to meet the basic needs of all people in the world. Today, we do not need to fight for our survival – our era need not be one of war. Indeed, it must not be one!

Because today, the greatest challenges we face – climate change, terrorism, and pandemics – can be solved not by fighting each other, but only by acting together. Fortunately, today’s technology also gives us the means to address problems on a humanity-wide scale. The massive virtual worlds that we inhabit today demonstrate the scalability of digital technologies.

Housing one-sixth of humanity, and with its immense diversity of languages, religions, customs, and beliefs, India is a microcosm of the world.

With the oldest-known traditions of collective decision-making, India contributes to the foundational DNA of democracy. As the mother of democracy, India’s national consensus is forged not by diktat, but by blending millions of free voices into one harmonious melody.

Today, India is also the fastest-growing large economy. Our citizen-centric governance model takes care of even our most marginalised citizens while nurturing the creative genius of our talented youth. We have tried to make national development not an exercise in top-down governance, but rather a citizen-led people’s movement.

We have leveraged technology to create digital public goods that are open, inclusive and interoperable. These have delivered revolutionary progress in fields as varied as social protection, financial inclusion and electronic payments. For all these reasons, India’s experiences can provide insights for possible global solutions.

Also Read:Views | G20 Presidency: Finest opportunity for India to showcase its strengths

During our G20 presidency, we shall present India’s experiences, learnings and models as possible templates for others, particularly the developing world.

Our G20 priorities will be shaped in consultation with not just our G20 partners, but also our fellow travellers in the global South, whose voice often goes unheard. Our priorities will focus on healing our One Earth, creating harmony within our One Family, and giving hope for our One Future.

For healing our planet, we will encourage sustainable and environment-friendly lifestyles, based on India’s tradition of trusteeship towards nature.

For promoting harmony within the human family, we will seek to depoliticise the global supply of food, fertilisers and medical products, so that geopolitical tensions do not lead to humanitarian crises. As in our own families, those whose needs are the greatest must always be our first concern.

For imbuing hope in our future generations, we will encourage an honest conversation among the most powerful countries – on mitigating risks posed by weapons of mass destruction and enhancing global security.

India’s G20 agenda will be inclusive, ambitious, action-oriented, and decisive.

Let us join together to make India’s G20 presidency a presidency of healing, harmony, and hope. Let us work together to shape a new paradigm – of human-centric globalisation.
