Summary

According to the paper’s sources, three such incidents were reported by JetAirways in the last two days.

In yet another possible trouble for Pratt & Whitney, three other airlines – Jet Airways, Air India and Spicejet – have also reported as many as eight glitches with their Airbus A320 Neo planes in the last two days, reports The Economic Times.

According to the report, three such incidents were reported by JetAirways in the last two days.

As per reports, Jet’s B737 plane was also found with a damaged wheel before flying to its destination on Saturday due to which, the plane remained grounded till the problem was fixed.

Another Jet Airways flight travelling from Mumbai to Doha was asked to return to the bay following vibrations in engine 2 of Airbus A330. The third incident occurred when a Chennai-bound flight returned to the bay due to similar technical issues.

“On arrival of Jet Airways flight 9W 418 Mumbai- Jaipur, on March 17, and during a routine inspection, necessitated a grounding due to a technical requirement. The return flight 9W 417 Jaipur-Mumbai operated with a revised departure on the following day due to Jaipur airfield closure and the arrival of a fresh crew set,” the airline said in a statement on Tuesday.

On the return of the Doha flight to the bay, it said, “in the interest of safety, our flight 9W 552 operating from Mumbai to Doha, returned to the bay due to technical reasons.'”

Sources said that Spicejet has been facing similar issues. The brake and one of the wheels of a Spicejet aircraft were found damaged at the Hyderabad airport after landing from Patna.

Also, one of the engines of its Bengaluru-Hyderabad flight experienced vibrations during climb. In another incident,  the air-conditioning system developed a technical glitch when it was departing from the city to New Delhi.

Spicejet, however, denied these incidents and said that the Hyderabad-Patna flight had a small issue with the wheel and the aircraft “returned to operation for its next rotation.”

While, Air India too reported minor glitches.

P&W grounded jets will be back in operation by April, says President Robert F. Leduc

Summary

P&W chief assured that the company was back in production and that it would be reworking the engines.

After a series of engine failures and grounding of aircraft functioning on Pratt & Whitney engines, P&W President Robert F. Leduc has now come out saying that the grounded aircraft owned by IndiGo and GoAir will be back in operation by April-end.

The statement comes after Directorate General of Civil Aviation, on March 12, directed IndiGo and GoAir to ground as many as 11 A320neo aircraft due to safety issues with P&W engines.

Leduc was quoted saying as,  “We’re disappointed with that decision, but I can tell you that by the end of April, that fleet will be back up in the air flying in India”.

P&W chief assured that the company was back in production and that it would be reworking the engines.

Of the 11 grounded aircraft, IndiGo owns eight, whereas, three were operated by GoAir.

The DGCA was quoted saying as, “Both IndiGo and GoAir have been told not to refit these engines, which are spare with them in their inventory.”

India’s largest airline, IndiGo has been facing major issues with Pratt and Whitney engines with replacement of 69 engines in mere 18 months.

Earlier this year, a warning was issued by the European Aviation Safety Agency raising ‘serious safety issues’ with Pratt engines which could have been the reason behind the in-flight shutdowns.

Possible trade war involving the US could impact air travel demand: IATA

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

According to the report, India has reported a growth of 17.9 percent in January – a two basis point increase from the previous month.

Concerns over a possible trade war involving the US could have a serious dampening effect on global market confidence, spilling over into demand for air travel,” said Alexandre de Juniac, IATA’s Director General and CEO on March 8, 2018.

Juniac said that despite the slower start to 2018, economic momentum is supporting rising passenger demand in 2018.

IATA is International Air Transport Association (IATA).

The association announced worldwide passenger traffic results for January 2018 that showed traffic slowest year-over-year increase of revenue passenger kilometers (RPKs).

IATA said that results were affected by temporary factors including the later timing of the Lunar New Year in 2018 as well as less favorable comparisons with the strong upward trend in traffic seen in late 2016-early 2017.

Talking about India, the report registered a growth of 17.9 percent in January 2018 – a two basis point increase from the previous month.

Even though there is a marginal increase, the data points that the RPK (revenue passenger kilometers) rose from its November record – 16.4 percent – making it among the fastest.

RPK is calculated by multiplying the number of passengers, who pay for the fare, etc. into the distance travelled.
In January this year, Asia recorded a 6.6 percent increase in capacity out of which India has contributed the maximum share. China followed with 8.9 percent rise.

The report says, “For Asia-Pacific carriers, the large markets in India, China and Japan mean that domestic travel accounts for 45% of the region’s operations.”

The European carriers’ demand overtook Asia’s 4.6 percent increase with a 6.0 percent rise in the 30-day period of January 2-18.
The Middle East carriers showed the weakest growth with their demand up by 0.5 percent compared to January 2017.
This, according to the report, is ‘the slowest pace since September 2008.’
