British Airways study says more than 7,000 items enter a plane to cater to passengers
Summary
British Airways has done a study to explain both these aspects — the kind of travellers and the number of items to keep them happy — of flying.
Which kind of traveller are you? The leisure type? The tourist? Or are you the corporate kind? Airlines get a mix of all kinds of passengers. This eclectic mix is what keeps them afloat.
To cater to this diverse crowd, airlines have to load several items onto an aircraft. What are these items? Many you would be familiar — cutlery, wine, glasses etc. But how many?
British Airways has done a study to explain both these aspects — the kind of travellers and the number of items to keep them happy — of flying.
The airline, which operates 850 flights a day, said a Boeing 747 is loaded with more than 7,000 items, many of which have to be unloaded and re-loaded before each flight. Included in the inventory are 1,737 items of cutlery, 798 glasses, 101 full bottles and 388 quarter bottles of wine, 350 bags of pretzels, 78 toilet rolls, five first aid kits and up to around 800 items of bedding, according to the airline.
The study also looked at how people fly. In an average year, one in two (47 percent) are solo travellers while 27 percent travel as a pair. Around 70 per cent are travelling for leisure while 28 per cent are flying for business.
The customer study looked at data from January 1 to July 31 2018, across the airline’s network.
