Airline, hotel stocks fall on fear about new virus in China

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

Investors worried that the virus could spread beyond Asia, like the SARS outbreak in 2002, which killed more than 700 people and hurt travel between the US and Asia

Airline and hotel shares fell Tuesday as fear grew about a virus that authorities say has killed six people and sickened 300 more, including at least one person in the US

The outbreak of the new type of coronavirus is believed to have started in Wuhan in central China. No US airlines fly to Wuhan, but their Chinese partner airlines do, and some passengers transfer from Chinese carriers to American ones.

Tori Emerson Barnes, executive vice president of public affairs at the US Travel Association, a trade group, said travelers should follow any guidance offered by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. So far, she said, that advice is very specific to travelers coming to and from Wuhan.

Investors worried that the virus could spread beyond Asia, like the SARS outbreak in 2002, which killed more than 700 people and hurt travel between the US and Asia.

Shares of Hawaiian Airlines’ parent fell 5.5 percent Tuesday. United Airlines shares dropped 4.4 percent , American Airlines lost 4.2 percent , and Delta Air Lines declined 2.7 percent .

Other stocks in the travel sector also took a hit Tuesday, including hotel chains like Marriott, which fell 4 percent , and Hilton, which was down 3 percent. Royal Caribbean Cruises slid 4 percent .

“We’re obviously watching it carefully, it’s still way too early to talk about,” Marriott CEO Arne Sorenson told CNBC Tuesday. “I think the Chinese authorities have got to make sure they understand what’s going on and we’ll have to watch and see what we learn from it.”

Royal Caribbean said in a statement, “In China, guests and crew are receiving enhanced health screening before boarding. The health and safety of our guests and crew is our top priority. We are monitoring the situation closely together with health authorities, and our ships are prepared to take additional preventive measures as circumstances indicate.”

The United States reported its first case Tuesday, a Washington state resident who returned last week from China and was hospitalized in good condition.

Fear about the virus increased just as millions of Chinese prepared to travel for the lunar New Year holiday, which starts Saturday. Cases have also been confirmed in Japan, South Korea and Thailand.

Last week, US health officials began screening passengers from Wuhan at New York’s Kennedy airport, Los Angeles International and the San Francisco airport. Officials say they will expand the screening to Chicago’s O’Hare and the Atlanta’s airport, and require all US-bound travelers who begin their trips in Wuhan to go to one of those five airports.

Doug Yakel, a spokesman for San Francisco International Airport, said passengers coming in from Wuhan are filling out a questionnaire that is turned in to on-site officials from the US Centers for Disease Control. Those passengers are diverted to a separate area, where they are interviewed and evaluated by the CDC.

“There is a legitimate threat to travel,” said Henry Harteveldt, a travel industry analyst in San Francisco. “It’s small now, but with the potential to become much larger with just some innocuous event such as an undetected passenger getting through (health) screening at an arrival airport like San Francisco International, Kennedy or LAX.”

Harteveldt said the situation also could become worse for airlines if companies start to restrict travel to China.

But some analysts cautioned that it was too early to predict the impact.

“Delta being down 5% seems to be an overreaction,” said Joseph DeNardi, an airline analyst for Stifel Nicolaus. “I don’t think Delta’s business is worth 5 percent less knowing what we know now.”

J.P. Morgan analyst Jamie Baker said 25 percent of Hawaiian’s revenue is tied to Asia, followed by 12  percent at United, 6 percent at Delta and 4% at American.

In 2002 and 2003, while US airlines were still reeling from the 9/11 terror attacks, the SARS outbreak hurt their international business. Harteveldt recalled a trip he made back then to Tokyo.

“Health workers in hazmat suits came on board and took people’s temperatures before they could disembark,” he said. “It was quite frightening.”

Chinese authorities confirmed that the coronavirus can spread from one person to another, not just from animals to humans. So far, however, the virus appears to be less dangerous and infectious than SARS, which also began in China.

Delta Air to operate Boeing 777-200 aircraft between Mumbai and New York

American carrier Delta Air Lines on Friday said the airline company will operate Boeing 777-200 aircraft between Mumbai and New York.

In an interview to CNBC-TV18’s Alisha Sachdev, Jimmy Eichelgruen, director of sales for Africa, Middle East and India, said, “Our aircraft can take 12 tonne of cargo per flight and it is a proven fact that when an airline does serve two countries or two big centres, it does allow us to exploit the market.”

Speaking about the Delta-Vistara interline agreement, he said, “It has just started in-line with the startup of our flight. We now have what is called an interline agreement with Vistara. We also have an interline agreement with Air India and that will allow passengers to connect for example from flights from Vistara on to our flight onto the US. So, that is a step in the right direction.”

Summary

Full-service carrier Vistara has launched services to Thiruvananthapuram in Kerala with a daily direct flight to and from Delhi, adding to its operations in Kochi.

Full-service carrier Vistara launched services to Thiruvananthapuram in Kerala with a daily direct flight to and from Delhi.  Customers from Thiruvananthapuram can take one-stop connections via Delhi to Amritsar, Chandigarh, Lucknow and Varanasi, the airline said in a statement on Saturday.

Besides Thiruvananthapuram, the airline also flies to Kochi in Kerala.

Vistara chief strategy officer Vinod Kannan said there is a strong business case for Vistara to launch flights to the key cities in Kerala. “Both cities are witnessing growth at a remarkable pace in multiple areas including infrastructure, business, tourism and trade. Besides, Thiruvananthapuram has today become a top choice for start-ups in setting up headquarters, and a large number of our customers today are young entrepreneurs and SME owners as well.”

The flight to Thiruvananthapuram will leave Delhi every day at 7 am and return from the Kerala capital at 11 am.

Vistara is a joint venture between Tata Sons and Singapore Airlines. The airline said it will induct 56 narrow-body and wide-body aircraft over the next four years, including 50 aircraft from the Airbus A320neo family for domestic and international short and medium-haul operations and 6 Boeing B787-9 for long-haul international operations.

Here’s why market expert SP Tulsian is cautious on InterGlobe Aviation

SP Tulsian stock picks

Market expert SP Tulsian of sptulsian.com on Thursday said he has a cautious view on InterGlobe Aviation Ltd, which operates India’s largest airline, IndiGo, “If I take a pure fundamental call, the stock is looking quite expensive.”

Tulsian said, “If you see the corporate governance, a company having a market capitalisation of Rs 65,000-70,000 crore is just having two independent directors and four promoter directors. I do not think that this kind of things can be called as comforting governance.”

On Apollo Hospitals, he said, “Pharmacy business cannot be the trigger for the stock prices to move up. So, if you chase the momentum and if you take a daily call and just start riding the momentum, then probably you can burn your hands. Allow the stock to correct to sub Rs 1,400 or maybe Rs 1,350 and then take a call.”

Speaking about Hindustan Unilever (HUL), Tulsian said, “I do not think that one can time the market for these kinds of stocks. So, buy them now only as you see, the GSK Consumer merger is also due. I am expecting that to happen in the next couple of months and that will be seen EPS accretive. I will not be surprised to see HUL positing about Rs 35-36 EPS or maybe Rs 37 EPS for FY21. So, if the stock is available at sub 50 P/E multiple, then that is seen to be good.”

Qatar Airways is also not interested in buying Air India in an upcoming government sales process, the airline’s chief executive told Reuters on Tuesday.

Akbar Al Baker was speaking at a function to announce the launch of flights from Doha to the Malaysian island of Langkawi from October.

Al Baker’s comments come as the Indian government is making a fresh attempt to sell stake or even completely exit Air India.

The government failed last year in its attempt to sell a 76 percent stake in Air India due to a lack of interest from bidders who said they found some of the stake sale terms too onerous, making it a non-starter. It is now redrawing the stake sale plans and as part of the effort it has hived off some of the loss-making airline’s debt of $8.5 billion.

READ ALSO: Air India unlikely to receive immediate relief from government

The government may now consider selling up to a 100 percent stake in the airline, a government official told Reuters in July, adding that it expects to get 150 billion rupees ($2.1 billion) from selling the airline.

Al Baker had previously told The Economic Times that his airline would be interested in Air India only if it comes without the ‘baggage’. He was not referring to airline’s debt but functions such as ground handling, engineering etc, he told the newspaper.

The government has for years propped up the debt-laden airline by infusing equity to keep it alive.

Salaries delayed at Jet Airways; pilots’ body writes to management

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Summary

Amid Jet Airways battling financial problems, company’s pilots on Thursday warned the management of non-cooperation over default on payments.

Amid Jet Airways battling financial problems, company’s pilots on Thursday warned the management of non-cooperation over default on payments.

According to Jet pilots, salary for August month is usually paid by mid-September.

“Withholding salaries, that too without prior notice, is a serious matter and the management will bear sole responsibility for any repercussions,” Jet Airways’ pilots said in a communication to the management.

“We would like to advice that failure to address the above points and not paying the salaries on time would lead to non-cooperation by pilots,” they warned.

The Naresh Goyal-promoted private airline, in which UAE national carrier Etihad holds 24 percent stake, is facing acute cash crunch after posting two back-to back quarterly losses this year.

While its losses stood at Rs 1,036 crore in the March quarter, the losses jumped to Rs 1,300 crore in the subsequent June quarter of the current fiscal.

“(Earlier) it was agreed that, henceforth, salaries would be paid on time and, if there were to be a delay, the same would be communicated to the pilots well in time,” the pilots said.

“We are deeply disappointed over both these conditions being violated by the management and the pilot body would be sure to share our disappointment,” they said.

The pilots also demanded that “all unnecessary positions and committees/ groups created in the last three months be dissolved with immediate effect and the hiring of the expensive expats (vis-a-vis domestic pilots) be stopped forthwith.”

Meanwhile, Jet Airways spokesperson said the management is in dialogue with the pilots and other members of its team to resolve some issues including disbursement of salaries.

Also, the management has assured the pilots that salaries will be processed by next week as company is in the process of raising fresh funds.

On issues regarding expat pilots and other changes, the management will look into the matter.

GoAir looking for double digit growth on an annual basis

On the occasion of the airline announcing its maiden international flight to Phuket starting in October, Wadia group-owned budget carrier, GoAir, is looking for a double digit growth on an annual basis.

In an interview to CNBC-TV18’s Uttkarash Chaturvedi, Cornelis Vrieswijk, chief executive officer,  said, “We have picked two destinations, where we see significant growth and demand. There is significant opportunity to start a profitable business internationally. Going forward, we will see robust domestic growth and we will expand internationally.”

Mumbai-based airline, which became eligible to fly overseas more than two years ago when it took delivery of its 20th aircraft, which was also the first Airbus A320 Neo for the airline, will be the fifth domestic carrier to have international operations.

Vrieswijk said, “We are looking for profitable growth. So, based on the development of the market, we will decide whether we want to grow faster rather than slower or slower rather than faster. In terms of number of destinations, we have a long list of wishes and I can’t share with you at the moment, when and where we will operate going forward. But definitely, there will be more destinations added to our international network.”

Jet banking on Jet Privilege to overcome turbulence?

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

The cash-strapped airline has embarked on a detailed cost-cutting and consolidation drive to arrest the turbulence in the company. Jet Privilege is one of the most relied upon and premium frequent flyer services in the country. And that’s what Jet Airways is reportedly counting on to help lift it out of tough times by selling its stake.

Cash-strapped Jet Airways may be going through a trying time, but its loyal flyers still swear by its frequent flyer programme. With over 8.5 million members, Jet Privilege is one of the most relied upon and premium frequent flyer services in the country. And that’s what Jet Airways is reportedly counting on to help lift it out of tough times.

The executive committee appointed to create a turnaround strategy for the airline has today cleared the decision to explore options to sell Jet Airways stake in Jet Privilege, sources with knowledge of the matter said. Jet Airways currently holds a 49.9 percent stake in Jet Privilege, the remaining 50.1 percent stake is held by Etihad Airways.

Prospective buyers?

As reported by CNBC-TV18 on the August 3, Jet Airways has already appointed investment bankers to find buyers for an equity infusion into the company. The investment bankers hired have been given an additional mandate to search for buyers for Jet Privilege, sources said.

“Investment bankers have been asked to search for Private equity and financial firms interested in picking up stake in the frequent flyer program. Bringing in a financial investor on board will mean that Jet Airways will continue to own the operational control of Jet Privilege,” said an official familiar with the development.

“While Jet Airways is open to selling to domestic and foreign airline carriers the first preference will be to sell to financial players in place of a strategic player. A carrier will want to take over the operational control and the 8.5 million members, which Jet would not favour,” he added.

Valuation:

Etihad acquired the 50.1 percent stake Jet’s frequent flyer program in 2014 for $150 million, valuing the program at $300 million. At that time Jet Privilege had a 2.8 million membership base which has since trebled to 8.5 million. A recent report by global consulting firm On Point ranked Jet Privilege at 31 amongst frequent flyer programs in the world and valued it at $1.1 billion.

That effectively makes the value of Jet’s stake in Jet privilege at $550 million. CNBC-TV18 learns that based on the On Point report and various internal and market studies, Jet Airways management expects at least $500 million for its stake in Jet Privilege.

“Based on the response from buyers, Jet Airways will formally launch the process, however, the management is hopeful that the sale of its frequent flyer arm will significantly bring down the pressure on the balance sheet;” said another source familiar with the development.

“The internal target the management has set for itself to complete the sale is Oct 2018,” he added.

Jet Airways has embarked on a detailed cost-cutting and consolidation drive to arrest the turbulence in the company. Sources working close to the company say the management and pr0omoters and cognizant of the pressures and at the same time are confident that they will be able to stir the beginning of a turnaround in 5-7 months’ time.
