Sebi committed to ensuring market integrity, says measures in place to address excess volatility

Summary

Market regulator Sebi in a statement said that unusual price movement in the stocks of a business conglomerate has been observed in the past week. Sebi further said that in all specific entity-related matters, if any information comes to its notice, then, as per extant policies, the same is examined and after due examination, appropriate action is taken.

The Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) on Saturday said it is committed to ensuring the stock market’s integrity and all necessary surveillance measures are in place to address any excessive volatility in individual shares.

“As part of its mandate, Sebi seeks to maintain orderly and efficient functioning of the market and has put in place a set of well-defined, publicly available surveillance measures (including the ASM framework) to address excessive volatility in specific stocks.”

“This mechanism gets automatically triggered under certain conditions of price volatility in any stock,” Sebi said in a statement.

Without naming any particular stock, the market regulator said that unusual price movement in the stocks of a business conglomerate has been observed in the past week.

Officials confirmed that the statement has been issued in the wake of the Adani matter only, reported PTI.

Sebi further said that in all specific entity-related matters, if any information comes to its notice, then, as per extant policies, the same is examined and after due examination, appropriate action is taken.

“Sebi has consistently followed this approach on entity-level issues and would continue to do so in the future as well,” it added.

The regulator, however, stopped short of clearly mentioning whether it is conducting any probe in the matter or not.

Sebi further said the Indian financial market, as represented by Sensex and Nifty, has demonstrated ongoing stability and is continuing to function in a transparent, fair and efficient manner.

“On a longer-term basis also, Indian markets have been viewed positively by investors. A cross-country comparison of dollar-adjusted market returns with both peer and developed countries, during the past three years till date, places the Indian market as a positive outlier,” it noted.

The regulator said it is committed to ensuring market integrity and that the markets continue to have the appropriate structural strength to function in an uninterrupted, transparent and efficient manner as has been the case so far.

The role of food in shaping cultural identity in South America

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

From Chilean empanadas to Argentine asado, each dish carries its own distinct flavour and plays an important role in preserving the cultural identity of its respective region.

South America is a continent with a rich and diverse culture, and food plays a big role in shaping that identity. So what role does food play in South American culture?

1. The rich history and cultural diversity of South America are shaped by its food.

South America is a land rich in history and culture, shaped by the people who have called it home for centuries. One way that this diversity is expressed is through food. Traditional dishes are often passed down through generations, carrying with them the stories and traditions of the people who created them. In a continent as large and diverse as South America, food plays a vital role in shaping cultural identity. From the humble potato to the fiery chilli pepper, each ingredient has a story to tell. Food is more than just sustenance; it is a way of life.

In South America, mealtimes are often communal affairs, providing an opportunity for family and friends to come together and bond over good food and conversation. This tradition of shared meals helps to strengthen relationships and create a sense of community. For many people, food is a source of comfort and nostalgia, evoking memories of happy times spent with loved ones.

In today’s globalised world, traditional cuisines are increasingly being replaced by homogenised international fare. While this may make it easier for people to travel and do business in different parts of the world, it can also lead to the loss of culinary traditions that are an important part of cultural heritage. The diversity of South American cuisine is under threat by this trend, but as long as there are people who care about their culture and its history, this rich culinary tradition will continue to thrive.

2. Traditional dishes are more than just sustenance; they reflect the values and beliefs of a community.

There is no denying that food plays an important role in shaping cultural identity. After all, food is more than just sustenance; it is a reflection of the values and beliefs of a community. This is especially true in South America, where traditional dishes are deeply rooted in the culture. For instance, consider the humble potato.

In Peru, the potato is a national symbol and has been a staple of the country’s diet for centuries. Potatoes are so revered in Peru that they have their own museum! And in Bolivia, another South American country, the traditional dish of pique macho includes potatoes as well as beef, onions, and tomatoes – all ingredients that are indigenous to Bolivia.

Clearly, food is an integral part of South American culture and identity. So next time you sit down to enjoy a traditional meal from this region of the world, take a moment to appreciate the role that food plays in shaping who we are.

3. Food can be a unifying force

In a region as vast and varied as South America, food can be a unifying force, bringing people together despite their differences. From humble beginnings as a way to stave off hunger, food has become an integral part of South American culture, with each country boasting its own unique cuisine. Food plays a significant role in shaping cultural identity, as it is often closely tied to tradition and history. For example, the Brazilian dish feijoada is derived from a slave stew that was once considered fit only for servants and slaves. Over time, it has been transformed into a national dish that is enjoyed by all Brazilians, regardless of social class.

In a similar way, food can also be used to bring people together across cultural divides. When immigrants from different countries settle in South America, they often bring their traditional dishes with them. This allows them to maintain a connection to their homeland while also sharing their culture with their new neighbours. As these cuisines mix and mingle, they create new hybrid dishes that reflect the diversity of the region. So, whether you’re enjoying a plate of Peruvian ceviche or Argentine empanadas, remember that you are part of a long and proud culinary tradition that is uniquely South American.

4. South American cuisine has been influenced by many different cultures over the years, resulting in a unique fusion of flavours.

South American cuisine is a perfect example of how food can help shape the identity and culture of a region. It is a unique blend of flavours, ingredients, and techniques that have been influenced by different cultures over the years. From Europeans to Indigenous people, many have left their mark on this cuisine. For centuries, traditional South American dishes have been passed down from generation to generation. This has allowed for the development of recipes that are so distinctive they are unmistakably associated with their particular region or country.

From Chilean empanadas to Argentine asado, each dish carries its own distinct flavour and plays an important role in preserving the cultural identity of its respective region. Not only does the food bring people together but it also acts as a source of pride for those who identify with it. It is one thing to learn about a culture’s history and traditions but it is another thing to taste the flavours that make up that culture. The unique fusion of flavours in South American cuisine has become an integral part of what makes up Latin America’s identity and allows people from around the world to experience its culture through food. Food has always played an important role in Latin America and continues to do so today. Whether it is used as a way to bring people together or simply as a reminder of home, South American cuisine will always be a source of pride for those who identify with it. So, why not take some time to explore this wonderful and diverse cuisine? Who knows what amazing flavours you might discover!

5. Today, the foods of South America are enjoyed by people all over the world and play an important role in preserving the region’s traditions and identity.

For centuries, food has been an indispensable part of South American culture. It is a reflection of the region’s vibrant and diverse history, with each local cuisine embodying the unique traditions and customs of the people who created it. From Colombia’s papa rellena to Argentina’s empanadas, the dishes of South America have become some of the most beloved and recognisable in the world. Food is more than just sustenance in South America – it carries a deep cultural significance. Every dish tells a story about its creators, from the ingredients used to the manner in which it is prepared. For example, Mexican tamales are made with masa (dough) and can be filled with various meats, vegetables, and spices. This traditional dish was invented by Indigenous peoples, who would use it as a way to preserve food for long journeys across difficult terrain. Today, these culinary creations are celebrated far beyond their place of origin. They serve not only as delicious reminders of old-world cooking techniques but also as symbols of regional pride for those living in South America. As these foods continue to gain recognition throughout the world, they help to preserve the distinct cultures that define this region and give it character. From a traditional street food to high-end gourmet restaurants, South American cuisine has something for all palates. Each type of dish offers something unique that reflects its place of origin and should be appreciated for its contribution to cultural identity. So why not take a trip down south and experience some of these amazing flavours first-hand? You won’t regret it!

Hillary Clinton will pay tribute to SEWA founder Ela Bhatt on her two-day Gujarat visit

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

Former US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Ela Bhatt, who died on November 2 last year due to age-related ailments, knew each other since 1995 and the former, in a 2018 social media post, had described the work of the renowned women’s rights activist as a “revolutionary experiment.”

Former US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton will be on a two-day visit to Gujarat from Sunday and will participate in programmes of the Self-Empowered Women’s Association (SEWA) founded by the social worker and Gandhian Ela Bhatt who passed away in November last year.

She will pay tribute to Bhatt in Ahmedabad and interact with SEWA members at its office in the city on Sunday, while on Monday Clinton will visit Dhrangadhra in Surendranagar district to interact with salt pan workers as part of SEWA’s rural initiative, its programme coordinator Rashmi Bedi said.

“Hillary Clinton will visit the SEWA reception centre in Ahmedabad between 2:45-4:00 pm and interact with its members. She will also deliver a speech at the reception centre. Before that, she will unveil a plaque near a banyan tree planted by Ela Bhatt at Victoria Garden on the 50th-year celebration of the SEWA foundation in 2022,” Bedi said on Saturday.

Clinton and Bhatt, who died on November 2 last year due to age-related ailments, knew each other since 1995 and the former, in a 2018 social media post, had described the work of the renowned women’s rights activist as a “revolutionary experiment.” “In 1972, she started an organization to give women small loans that could help them find fulfilment in their work and contribute to their family’s well-being. It was called the Self-Employed Women’s Association, or SEWA,” Clinton had said in her post.

Summary

In the viral Instagram, Callum Ryan shared his experience of enjoying a pizza at a much lesser cost despite flying from one country to another. He shows on his laptop in the video the price of the desired Domino’s Pizza to be £19.99.

A digital creator and a resident of the UK set himself a challenge of getting on a flight to Milan, Italy and eating a pizza on a tight budget of £19.99 (Rs 2,000), which is the usual cost of a medium Domino’s pizza from his local place. The delivery fee on a Domino’s Pizza order in the UK was way too high.

In the next part of the video, Ryan explains that he bought a last-minute flight ticket for just £8 and then he went to a pizzeria in Milan. There he had a Margherita pizza which cost him 11 Euros or about 9 Pounds 72 cents including table service. This means he paid a total of 17 Pounds and 72 Cents (approx. Rs. 1,585) for the complete trip which is lesser than the cost of the Domino’s pizza.

He said he used TikTok to find the best pizza place in Milan and headed straight there. He also got a free glass of Prosecco and a mini pesto pizza.

Netizens were stunned after watching Ryan’s video.

“I want more of this!!!” one user wrote on social media while another comment read,  “This is the stupid I really want to do.”

Another person commented, “Dear friend, I advise you to repeat your experiment. But come to Naples, which is the homeland of pizza. You’ve never eaten anything tastier… and believe me, you’ll pay much less.”

However, a user pointed out that Ryan didn’t include the cost of his return flight in the challenge, and asked, “How did you get back?”.

Lockheed Martin has been pitching its F-21 aircraft as the best option in the Indian Air Force’s hunt for 114 combat jets. The company said it will showcase its vast range of advanced defence capabilities and solutions at Aero-India and the exhibits will include the F-21 fighter aircraft, C-130J transport aircraft, MH-60R ‘Romeo’ multi-mission helicopter, Javelin weapon system, and S-92 multi-role helicopter, among others.

US defence major Lockheed Martin will showcase its F-21 fighter jet, S-92 multi-role helicopter, MH-60R Romeo multi-mission chopper and anti-tank weapon Javelin, among others, at the upcoming Aero-India exhibition in Bengaluru. The 14th edition of Aero-India, known as Asia’s largest aerospace exhibition, will be held at Bengaluru in Karnataka from February 13 to 17.

Almost all leading aerospace companies around the world are expected to attend the event at Air Force Station, Yelahanka, in a total area of around 35,000 sq metres.

“We are excited to participate at Aero-India 2023 to showcase our advanced capabilities and address our customers’ biggest challenges for the 21st century,” William Blair, chief executive, Lockheed Martin India Private Ltd said.

The top executive said Lockheed’s focus in the country would be to create opportunities for the local industry to feed into the global supply chain and manufacture in “India, for India and for the world”.

“We continue to strengthen and grow our presence and partnerships in India for strategic security and greater self-reliance in the defence sector,” he said.

“We have a high degree of confidence in the manufacturing and technical capabilities of the Indian industry which is reflected through our two joint ventures and multiple associations with public and private companies of all sizes, including MSMEs,” Blair added.

The company said the prime attraction at the Lockheed Martin booth will be the F-21 fighter aircraft cockpit demonstrator.

It said the F-21 jet, which is on offer to the Indian Air Force (IAF) for the Multi-Role Fighter Aircraft competition, is configured with the latest sensors and mission avionic systems.

The Indian Navy’s most recent rotary wing acquisition, MH-60R ‘Romeo’ Seahawk helicopter, will occupy a prominent place at Lockheed display.

The MH-60R is an anti-submarine warfare (ASW) and anti-surface warfare (ASuW) multi-mission helicopter.

The first three MH-60R helicopters were delivered to India in 2021 and are being utilised to train Indian pilots and crew members in the US.

In July-August last year, the Indian Navy accepted the delivery of another three helicopters at Kochi International Airport.

A total of 24 MH-60Rs are being delivered to India over the next few years.

Lockheed said the “world’s most versatile” one-man portable and platform-employed anti-tank precision weapon system, Javelin, will also be a part of its exhibits at Aero-India.

Using “fire-and-forget” technology, the weapon guides itself to the target, allowing soldiers and platform assets to reposition out of harm’s way once the missile is fired, it said.

“Boosting Lockheed Martin’s presence at the show will be the C-130J Super Hercules aircraft and the S-92 multi-role helicopter, both of which represent a strong legacy of partnership with the Indian defence industry,” the company said in a release.

The Indian Air Force operates 12 C-130Js using the tactical airlifter for a variety of missions.

India is also connected to C-130J through Tata Lockheed Martin Aerostructures Limited, a joint venture, that has the distinction of being the single-global source of C-130J empennage assemblies included on all new Super Hercules aircraft. All C-130Js now built have major components manufactured in India.

Lockheed said it’s present and future programmes in India range from transport, maritime and fighter aircraft to sea and land-based air and missile defence projects, as well as capabilities in civil sectors, including new and renewable energy.

India to push primary steel producers to use 50% of input from recycled steel by 2047: Jyotiraditya Scindia

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

Currently, the level of recycled steel usage in primary steel production is only around 10 percent even though recycled steel contributes to 22.5 percent of the domestic total steel production of 140 million tonnes, the minister said while addressing the last day of the three-day international conference of material recycling in Kochi.

Union Steel Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia on Saturday said his ministry will push primary steel producers to use 50 percent of their input from scrapped/recycled steel by 2047 to help achieve the government target of moving into a circular economy.

Currently, the level of recycled steel usage in primary steel production is only around 10 percent even though recycled steel contributes to 22.5 percent of the domestic total steel production of 140 million tonnes, the minister said while addressing the last day of the three-day international conference of material recycling in Kochi.

The 10th conference is being organised by the Material Recycling Association of India and is attended by over 2,000 delegates from 38 countries.

Noting that recycling is the key cog in the wheel of manufacturing as economies move into a circular model of development, he said, “Going forward the industry should focus on the 6Rs philosophy of reduce (exploitation of natural resources), recycle, reuse, recover, re-design and reinforce”.

He said the government is committed to reducing CO2 emissions in the steel sector by 5 percent by 2030 from the current 2.85 to 1.4 CO2/tonne of crude steel, and to achieve this recycling scrap steel is an extremely important source.

“Today, scrap usage is only 15 percent in primary steel production. We will push the steel industry to increase this to 25 percent in the next five years, and by 2047, this should double to 50 percent. This means that the primary steel producers consume only 50 percent of iron ore by then,” Scindia said.

This is needed as the natural resources are finite and the demand looks infinite, he said, adding the steel industry has the biggest role to play in the whole process.

The country currently produces 25 million tonne of scrap steel and annually imports 5 million tonne of scrap steel with zero import duty, he added.

The recycling industry is highly unorganised and is worth about USD 50 billion now. There are over 25,000 recycling units in the country. However, in the metals space almost 95 percent are organised, Material Recycling Association president Sanjay Mehta said.

He also urged the minister to extend the duty-free imports of other scraps such as copper, aluminium, zinc and other metals as many countries are adopting no export of scrap policies now. For instance last month, the European Union imposed a ban on scrap exports, and so did the UAE.

Domestic recyclers used to import 25 percent of their shipments from the EU markets. Similarly, the UAE is also a large source market for the country. Counties are discouraging exports of scraps as they move into the circular economy.
