Oranges top the charts, when one discusses winter fruits in India. But at a market in West Bengal’s Malda — mangoes — the quintessential summer fruit, is hogging all the limelight. The fruit, which is bing shipped from Bengaluru is priced at Rs 270 to 300 for a kg. Those who wish to taste this fruit off-season are emptying their pockets and are  happily paying up to Rs 100 for a piece.

Bubai Saha, a buyer, told News18, “It is wonderful that even in winter, we find mangoes in the market. It has made mango exclusive. Yes, the price is a bit high, but it tastes good. Everyone at home is happy.”

Mangoes are available for a large part of the year in Bengaluru. Some fruit sellers in Malda decided to bring mangoes closer home and the idea clearly paid off.

Sourav Saha, one of the sellers, said that people are loving this off-season fruit. “These mangoes have come from Bengaluru. Mangoes are available throughout the year in the Southern part of the country. So, I decided to bring the winter variety to Malda. Some people are buying one or two mangoes as the cost is high due to the off-season factor. But I would like to add that the market has been steady,” he said.

Zev Siegl, the co-founder of Starbucks, recently visited Bengaluru’s iconic Vidyarthi Bhavan to indulge in some local food. Siegl was in the city to attend an investors’ conference and stopped by at the restaurant to savor in some masala dosa and filter coffee. Siegl also left a note for the eatery, about his “good experience”.

“It was an honour to enjoy your famous food, coffee and warm welcome, I will take this wonderful experience with me back to Seattle,” read Siegl’s note, that Vidyarthi Bhavan shared on Instagram.

Siegl, who now works as a start-up consultant, was in Bengaluru to attend the Global Investors Meet 2022. He co-founded the international coffee chain in 1971 and served as Vice President and director until 1980, when he left the company.

The iconic restaurant said that they were “happy and proud” to have hosted Siegl.

This isn’t the first time that the iconic restaurant has hosted a special guest. Famous for its “masala dosae” (South Indian snack), the restaurant is a hotspot for political leaders, literary icons, students, and working professionals.

According to the managing partner of the restaurant Arun Adiga, Sunak’s wife Akshata Murthy and her parents, Infosys co-founder Narayana Murthy and Sudha Murthy were regulars at the restaurant, the Indian Express reported.
