The Bombay High Court expressed strong disapproval of the late-night interrogation tactics employed by the Enforcement Directorate (ED), emphasizing the fundamental importance of the right to sleep and its connection to human rights. The court, comprising Justices Revati Mohite-Dere and Manjusha Deshpande, made these observations while addressing a petition brought forth by a 64-year-old individual accused under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA).

The petitioner, a resident of Gandhidham, Gujarat named Issrani, was arrested in August 2023 on charges related to money laundering. Through his legal representatives Vijay Aggarwal, Ayush Jindal, and Yash Wardhan Tiwari, Issrani sought to challenge the legality of his arrest before the Bombay HC. The advocates argued that Issrani’s rights were violated during his interrogation, highlighting instances where his personal liberty was restricted, his mobile phone confiscated, and he was continuously monitored even during restroom breaks.

According to Aggarwal’s submissions, Issrani was subjected to interrogation throughout the night despite being medically unfit and having cooperated in previous investigations. This extended questioning period, which lasted until the early hours of the morning, infringed upon Issrani’s fundamental right to sleep, a component of the right to life guaranteed under Article 21 of the Indian Constitution.

The court took note of the timeline, noting that Issrani’s statement was recorded from 10:30 p.m. until around 3:30 a.m., after which he was arrested at 5:30 a.m. The bench criticised the practice of conducting interrogations during late hours, emphasizing that individuals summoned under the PMLA should have their statements recorded during reasonable, “earthly” hours. The court underscored the adverse effects of sleep deprivation on physical and mental well-being, highlighting its impact on cognitive function.

In response to these concerns, the court directed the ED to establish guidelines for conducting interrogations within reasonable hours and issued a stern reminder that consent does not justify the deprivation of an individual’s right to sleep. The bench scheduled a follow-up hearing for compliance on September 9th.

Ram Navami 2024: Puja Rituals

Begin your day by waking up early and taking a holy bath.

Cleanse the home temple and decorate it with flowers. Arrange the puja material for the Ram Navami puja.

Place the idol or image of Lord Ram and start the puja by meditating in front of the statue.

After meditation, one should stay in Aavahan Mudra and chant a mantra in front of the murti.

Next, offer five flowers and a seat to Lord Ram while chanting the mantra.

After offering a seat, Lord Rama’s feet are washed with water (Padya offering); continue chanting the mantra.

Post this, offer water to Lord Rama for Abhishekam.

Devotees will then have to offer water to Lord Ram for Achamana (drinking).

Then comes Madhuparka, offering honey and milk next while chanting the mantra.

Next, offer water to Lord Ram for a bath, which is called snanam.

Being mindful of food choices during fasting is crucial for maintaining nutritional balance, stable energy levels, and digestive health. It helps prevent abrupt changes in diet that can lead to digestive discomfort and supports weight management goals by avoiding overeating.

Additionally, mindful eating promotes overall health, supporting immune function, gut health, and vitality. For many, fasting is accompanied by spiritual or mental practices, and mindful food choices can enhance these benefits, promoting a sense of mindfulness and awareness.

Puthandu, also known as Puthuvarudam, signifies the commencement of the Tamil New Year, marking the advent of spring and honoured as a harvest festival.

Celebrated predominantly by the Tamil populace in Tamil Nadu, Sri Lanka, and globally dispersed Tamil communities, Puthandu aligns with the inaugural day of the Chithirai month as per the Tamil calendar. This year, the festivity falls on April 14, as it customarily does every year.

Historical Origins:

Tracing its roots to the era of the Chola dynasty, which governed Tamil Nadu and adjoining regions of South India from the 9th to the 13th centuries, Puthandu’s inception coincides with the emergence of the Tamil calendar, attributed to the Chola reign.

The head of Rolex SA said viewing luxury watches as investments is dangerous following a surge in interest from speculators during the pandemic.

“I don’t like it when people compare watches with stocks. This sends the wrong message and is dangerous,” Chief Executive Officer Jean-Frédéric Dufour said in a rare interview with Swiss newspaper NZZ before the Watches and Wonders trade show that starts this week in Geneva.

Led by brands including Rolex, Patek Philippe and Audemars Piguet, prices for pre-owned watches rocketed to unprecedented levels in 2021 and early 2022 as speculators, boosted by low-interest rates and soaring cryptocurrency values, snapped up expensive Swiss timepieces.

But secondary market prices have fallen sharply in the past two years amid weaker economic growth and higher interest rates. The Bloomberg Subdial Watch Index, which tracks prices for the 50 most traded timepieces by value, has declined 40% in the past two years.

Rolex is the biggest Swiss watch brand and dominates the industry with an estimated 30% market share. Known for its Datejust, Daytona and Submariner models, the Geneva-based company’s sales crossed 10 billion Swiss francs ($11 billion) for the first time in 2023, according to estimates by Morgan Stanley.

Secondary Market

The Rolex CEO confirmed the Swiss watchmaker, which is controlled by a foundation named for company founder Hans Wilsdorf, pays close attention to secondary market prices. He said “very well known and successful brands,” are always in the minds of consumers and are still doing well despite a downturn in demand.

“This can also be seen in the fact that the resale value of these watches does not decrease,” he told the newspaper.

In a major shift in strategy, Rolex began issuing certificates of authenticity for its used watches in late 2022 through a so-called certified pre-owned program. The authenticated used watches are sold through its network of authorized dealers including Switzerland’s Bucherer, which Rolex bought in 2023 in its biggest-ever acquisition.

Dufour, who has led Rolex since 2015, told NZZ that he expects 2024 to be a difficult year for the Swiss watch industry as demand slows from the peak.

Bloomberg News reported in December that the surge in retail demand for the top Swiss watchmakers’ products had slowed significantly after three years of frenzied buying.

Smaller Brands

The Rolex CEO said the slowdown will hit sales of smaller watch brands hardest. “The pendulum is now swinging in the other direction, and it is naturally more pronounced for the less established brands,” he said. “While they may have seen a 20% increase in sales during the upswing, they may now experience a 15% decline.”

“For the big brands, the fluctuations are smaller,” Dufour added.

Watchmakers tend to overproduce during good times and when markets weaken, retailers come under pressure to cut prices. “This is extremely problematic because discounts damage emotional products like ours,” Dufour said.

The Rolex boss said the strong value of the Swiss franc against other currencies is also adding to pressures on the industry, as is the rising cost of raw materials such as gold.

“The increased interest rates are also affecting people’s spending mood, and the geopolitical situation isn’t helping either,” he said.

As the day of Eid al-Fitr draws near, the nation is preparing for festivities to commemorate the completion of Ramadan, the holy month during which Muslims fast from sunrise to sunset. The Islamic festival is celebrated annually on the first day of Shawwal, the tenth month of the Muslim (lunar) calendar.

However, the date of the celebration depends on the visibility of the new moon. This leads Muslims in different parts of the world to celebrate the festival at different times. India, meanwhile, is all geared up to celebrate Eid al-Fitr on April 10 or 11 this year. However, the exact date is yet to be known.

It needs to be noted that the date to celebrate Eid al-Fitr might change by one or two days depending on the location as well. This year, the month of Ramadan commenced on March 11, 2024, in many countries, including those in the Middle East, North America, and the UK.

Ahead of the Islamic festival, the Supreme Court of Saudi Arabia made an announcement asking Muslims to see the crescent moon for the month of Shawwal on the evening of April 8. This sighting of the moon on this particular day marks the end of Ramadan and the beginning of Eid al-Fitr.

As far as astronomical calculations are considered, Eid al-Fitr is expected to be observed on Wednesday, hinting at a 30-day fast in Ramadan instead of 29 days for Muslims this year.

If the crescent moon is not sighted in Saudi Arabia on April 8, Eid al-Fitr will be observed on April 11 and the night before Eid (Chand Raat) will be observed on April 10.
