‘What if they leave after 18’: Nikhil Kamath explains why he doesn’t want kids

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

On his podcast, Nikhil Kamath explained the reason why he doesn’t want to have kids in the future.

India’s youngest billionaire and Zerodha co-founder, Nikhil Kamath, is known for his unconventional philosophy about life and stirring discussions with his unusual comments. Now, Kamath has opened up about parenthood, saying he doesn’t want to have kids. He also spoke about not believing in the practice of continuing ‘legacy.’ Kamath’s remarks went viral instantly, drawing divided reactions across social media platforms.

Why Nikhil Kamath doesn’t want children

In the recent episode of his podcast, the Zerodha co-founder explained the reason why he doesn’t want to have kids, stating, “I’m going to ruin 18–20 years of my life babysitting this child, and then, if luck serves me right, the reverse will happen at some point. What if he says ‘scr** you’ at 18 and leaves anyway.”

Further sharing his own viewpoints about the idea of ‘legacy,’ Kamath asserted that everyone is born and dies in the same manner as every other animal on the planet, and nobody remembers them later. “I think we all feel that we are more important than we actually are… What’s the point of being remembered? I feel like you should come, you should live well, and you should be nice to the people you meet in your life,” he said.

This is not the first time that Nikhil Kamath has shared such views about having kids. Mentioning that he doesn’t believe in kids, Kamath once said, “I don’t believe in marriage or having kids. Being alone, we think, is a bad thing, as society has made us believe that. However, the ability to evolve is the highest in isolation.”

Meanwhile, the businessman’s latest comments have sparked debate on the internet, with reactions from users. A user wrote, “Nobody should be judged for whether they want kids or not; it’s a deeply personal choice. Mother Teresa, for example, wouldn’t have become who she was if she had her own biological kids. Sure, having children is important for keeping the human race going, but everyone’s journey to fulfilment is different,” while another commented, “Kids are part of the life cycle. Enjoy the experience like you enjoy every other thing. Some things in life are not meant to be skipped.”

“He is 100% wrong about this and will regret it later, sad that this will affect so many young people as he is an influential figure,” another one opposed his comments.

Bumble founder Whitney Wolfe Herd shares a bizarre future of dating

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

Whitney Wolfe Herd, like many other chiefs in the tech industry, is betting big on artificial intelligence (AI) saying that Bumble has been leveraging it from even before it was “super trendy”.

Dating is tiring, especially now that the options are limitless and the walls are closing in on our attention span.

Bumble founder and executive chair Whitney Wolfe Herd believes that the dating app might have a solution.

“If you wanna get out there, there is a world where your [AI] dating concierge could go and date for you with other [AI] dating concierges. And then you don’t have to talk to 600 people and all of San Francisco,” Herd said speaking at the Bloomberg Technology Summit last week.

Herd, like many other chiefs in the tech industry, is betting big on artificial intelligence (AI) saying that Bumble has been leveraging it from before it was “super trendy”.

Recently, it announced Opening Moves, a new feature that allows women to send out automated prompts to their matches, in an attempt to take off the pressure of making the first move.

It also rolled out an AI-powered deception detector to identify and eradicate spam, scams, and fake profiles.

Bumble wants to “help people find the real connection” in a way that does not exhaust them or stress them out along the way. But isn’t that also a part of the process — finding out what you’re looking for versus what you think you’re looking for and getting butterflies in your stomach like a five-year-old? Like Taylor Swift said, “If you never bleed, you’re never gonna grow.”

And what would a world like that even look like? You feed your preferences to your said concierge, tell them you want a no-nonsense Ryan Gosling lookalike and wait for it to find the best match? Someone who looks like a Ken doll and likes you back? Even the hypothesis sounds too good to be true.

But matchmaking isn’t the only trick Herd wants AI to pull out of its hat. She also wants it to assume the role of your therapist.

“For example, you could, in the near future, be talking to your AI dating concierge and you could share your securities. I just came out of a breakup, I’ve commitment issues and it could help you train yourself into a better way of thinking about yourself. And then it could give you productive tips for communicating with other people,” Herd said.

While AI can be your virtual shoulder to cry on, its advice may lack the human touch and nuanced understanding crucial for complex decisions. If you are facing issues, it is best you talk to a professional — a human one.

Also, the AI chatbots still come with a warning that they might make mistakes, often with extreme confidence.

However, in the centre of all of this, Bumble is still guided by its “Northern Star” — a safer kinder digital platform for more healthy and more equitable relationships.

“Always putting women in the driver’s seat — not to put men down — to actually recalibrate the way we all treat each other. And so AI is going to follow the same set of values and we are going to lean in fast and furiously,” she said.

Mother’s Day 2024: Anand Mahindra to Deepinder Goyal, corporate leaders recall moments cherished with moms

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

Anand Mahindra, the chairperson of Mahindra and Mahindra, shared a sentimental post dedicated to his mother.

The world celebrated Mother’s Day on Sunday, May 12, showering their ‘special person’ in life with surprises, love and appreciation for their unwavering support and endless sacrifices.

Several corporate leaders remembered their moms, recalling some of their cherished moments to mark the occasion.

Anand Mahindra, the chairperson of Mahindra and Mahindra, shared a sentimental post dedicated to his mother.

“Back in 1977. Just before I left for college. My mother wasn’t looking into the camera; As usual, she was gazing into the distance… trying to envision her children’s future, hoping that a good education would be their passport to success—and happiness. Happy #MothersDay Ma. We’ll keep trying to live up to your dreams for us…,” Mahindra wrote on X while sharing a throwback photograph of himself with his mother.

Similar was the case with Vedanta chairperson Anil Agarwal, who recalled how his mother’s advice motivated him and helped in the establishment of his company.

“After failing multiple times in business, I nearly gave up. I was lost, demotivated and disturbed,” Agarwal said in a post on X.

He added that his mother Vedvati Agarwal then advised him to move forward in life and that’s how the Vedanta Group was born.

“Tab Maa ne bola tha ‘Anil aage badhte jao darwaze khulte jaenge.” It wasn’t easy, but unki blessings sem I kept moving forward. It was with these words, and with Maa’s blessings, I started all over again. That’s how Vedanta was born, a company named after my mother Vedvati Agarwal. It is a tribute to her strength and wisdom. Happy Mother’s Day! #MothersDay,” he added.

Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw, Executive Chairperson of Biocon Limited, also shared an image with her mother and wrote, “Remembering my awesome mom on Mother’s Day.”

On Mother’s Day 2024, food delivery giant Zomato organised a surprise for the mothers of the company’s employees.

“And here’s the surprise! We invited the moms of our employees to celebrate the day with us at the office. Also got great feedback on how to run @zomato better. So much love all around today,” Zomato CEO Deepinder Goyal shared on social media along with images and videos of the mothers’ of the Zomato staff cutting cake at the office.

Bhavish Aggarwal, CEO of Ola, said he was not able to meet his mother on the occasion as she was away in Ludhiana.

“Happy Mother’s Day! My Mom is in Ludhiana so can’t meet her today but would love to personally deliver a cake from @Olacabs @ONDC_Official to a mom in Bengaluru! If you want me to deliver, comment below and we will select the best couple of requests,” he wrote.

Mother’s Day comes as a heartfelt reminder of the unwavering perseverance, love, and resilience that moms around the world have for their children. To mark this special day, families often join to honour the ‘extraordinary’ women who have shaped their lives with unflinching love.

This new feature on Bumble takes the pressure off women to make the first move

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

While women are still in charge of whom they can make conversations with, the stress of delivering the perfect icebreaker is now off the table. Once men respond, women have 24 hours to decide if they want to move ahead or not.

Texting anybody first is a chore and texting a match first on a dating app is added pressure that nobody asked for, yet here we are. To take that women-first pressure off, dating app Bumble recently introduced a new feature called Opening Moves that allows women to set up questions that their matches can respond to.

“You can choose from a list of suggested Opening Moves that cover a variety of fun topics, from ‘What’s your ideal first date?’ to ‘How many episodes of a series is it acceptable to watch in one sitting’?” Bumble said in a blog post.

For non-binary and same-gender connections, either person can set and respond to prompts. Now, while women are still in charge of whom they make conversation with, the stress of delivering the perfect icebreaker is off the table. Once men respond, women have 24 hours to decide if they want to move forward or not.

How the new feature works

To set up an Opening Move feature, tap on the grey silhouette in the bottom left corner of the app screen. Then select “Edit profile” or “Complete my profile”, which will let you add a question. Users can either choose from a list of questions already provided or can craft their own. Alternatively, you can also set it up when you match with someone or can add it within the chat screen.

“Many have shared their exhaustion with the current online dating experience, and for some, that includes making the first move. We’re also hearing from women that empowerment today is not only about control but it’s also about agency,” Lidiane Jones, CEO of Bumble said in a statement.

Also Read: Tinder launches free online course on interpersonal consent on Coursera

Users on social media have mixed reactions on the new feature.

@H4RRYSCINEMA thinks it’s a little lame, as nobody is answering the moves and she is still stuck making the first move.

Another user wrote:

@sparklemidi had several GPT-generated responses to her move and the idea of a witty conversation starter, in case that, is more or less pointless. Might as well let the chatbots talk to themselves.

@jvquantum is excited to see how the feature works out and for letting women off the hook (well, kind of).

During testing, Bumble said that it discovered that Opening Moves boosted meaningful discussions on the app by raising chat initiation and respond rates while also increasing conversation duration.

Mother!

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

It’s where everything starts and ends, from birth to maturity to demise—from mother earth to motherland to mother ships to mother brands to the choicest profanities.

Mother is one word that can draw widely disparate emotive responses from individuals, perhaps more than any other word can. This likely because this is one of the first words one encounters on being ejected onto earth. And when I say “mother”, that’s a mother statement for all forms of the word—mamma, mummy, mom, mammy, mater et al. An individual’s early life is very deeply connected to this word, as it spells everything in the universe from the essentials of food, water, clothing, excretion… for most. That’s a time when there’s little any cradled being can do to repel the smothering and attention or protest against being stuffed with tasteless cereals.

As we grow, the mother becomes the to go-to for most things. For many she’s the hard disk on which you can download any information you want. And there’s enough GB to absorb the drivel. Get a little older and she’s one who is seen as clueless about a world that’s changing swiftly and more often than not a victim of our rebellious rage. We often feel caged in and limited by her instructions on how to conduct ourselves. But we know that if she starts to lose her grip, the man of the house may be called in to wield the stick so that you know who’s boss.

Tired of her constant admonitions, some decide to seek out freedom in distant educational institutions in their youth or resort to treating their homes as night-stays—seeking to spend their free time with friends and acquaintances who seem much more in-tune with the world and way more with-it.

Then comes a time to leave the nest and you step out with eagerness and a faint sense of insecurity, but the former is the more powerful emotion. Some time after the departure, you start to value a few aspects of living in your mother’s home. You may also get doted upon again and spoilt on infrequent visits, which for some leads to a change of heart.

Those who decide to tie the knot, get another mother free. She’s not quite like your mother. The mother-in-law is far more forgiving and indulgent than your mother if you are a son-in-law. Quite the opposite if you are a daughter-in-law. In case of the latter, the standards are far more demanding than those that would apply to even her daughter, if she has one. But this is a subject I’m not very qualified to dwell on, so I’ll leave it here before brickbats start flying my way.

As you age and your offspring start to grow, you start noticing your mother’s traits in your better half, if you are a man. If you are a woman, it is unlikely you will ever see your father in your spouse, the former is usually placed on a very high pedestal.

Short point: No matter what age you are, you can never escape your mother. And you can never stop saying the word “mother”—even if it is just to curse.

Happy Mothers’ Day!

Delhi’s ‘Vada Pav Girl’ Chandrika Dixit flaunts a Ford Mustang, leaves internet in disbelief

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

Delhi’s ‘Vada Pav Girl’ girl Chandrika Dixit has again grabbed eyeballs with a new viral video featuring her new ride — a Ford Mustang.

Chandrika Dixit, the famous ‘Vada Pav Girl’ from Delhi, has yet again taken the internet by storm with her latest video featuring her in a Ford Mustang car.

Dixit, who runs a fast food stall in the Mangolpuri area of Delhi, was recently in the news when the police officials reportedly took action after she got into an altercation with the locals over roadblocks as she organised a community feast near her stall.

Now, she has again grabbed eyeballs with a new viral video featuring her new ride — a Ford Mustang.

A video showcases a sizable crowd gathered around a parked car. It starts with a man saying that there is a Mustang car and a lot of people have gathered around it. “So, let’s find out why so many people have gathered here?” he said.

Later on, the camera pans to a man, who then opens the boot of the luxury car, showing Dixit crouched inside it with a plate of Pav, or bread.

While sitting inside the boot, Dixit says, “A big announcement is coming soon. Stay tuned.”

The crown then cheers her up with an enthusiastic applause.

Sharing the video on her Instagram handle, Dixit wrote, “Vada Pav Girl starts selling vada pav in a Mustang car.”

Dixit often shares videos of her latest buys with her followers on the social media platform. A few days ago, she posted a video in which she was seen stepping out of the Mustang car and heading into a shop to buy an iPhone, an Apple Watch and AirPods.

While scrolling through her account, you see multiple videos of her driving expensive cars, including a Porsche, or posing with them.

A few days ago, multiple videos went viral showing Dixit being detained by police officials in Outer Delhi. Responding to it, Delhi Police stated that she was not arrested and no case has been registered against her.

According to police, her stall was being run in the city without permission from the municipal body.

Police officials said they had received complaints from locals about a traffic jam in the area after Dixit organised a Bhandara on the roadside. After a police team reached the spot, she allegedly misbehaved with them. Later on, her stall was seized and she was taken to a nearby police station.

Dixit has more than 300,000 followers on Instagram.
