Ashram secretary Amrut Modi said that Trump will spend 15 minutes at the place.  “Trump will visit the ‘Hriday Kunj’. If he wishes, he will spin a charkha. We will also gift him a coffee-table book, and a book containing 150 quotations of Gandhi,” the Ashram official said.

Huge security has been deployed across the city, especially along the nearly 13-km route to be taken by Trump’s convoy from the airport to the Amarvilas hotel, and in and around the Taj.

According to the official schedule, the US president will arrive with his family at the Taj Mahal complex at 5:15 PM on Monday and spend about an hour at the famed 17th-century mausoleum, built by Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan.

He will then leave for Delhi for the main leg of the visit during which restricted and delegation-level talks between Trump and Modi will be held at Hyderabad House on Tuesday.

Unprecedented security measures in place in Delhi for Trump’s visit

Summary

ITC Maurya, the hotel where US President Donald Trump will check-in on Monday, has been brought under an unprecedented security cover with anti-sabotage teams involving the Army and paramilitary conducting checks on the routes to be taken by the visiting dignitary.

ITC Maurya, the hotel where US President Donald Trump will check-in on Monday, has been brought under an unprecedented security cover with anti-sabotage teams involving the Army and paramilitary conducting checks on the routes to be taken by the visiting dignitary.

Security agencies are also working in close coordination with the US Secret Service, officials said.

Anti-drone detachment of NSG, snipers, elite SWAT commandos, kite catchers, canine units, sharp shooters on high-rise buildings and Parakram vans have also been deployed along the routes and areas in and around the hotel where Trump will be staying, they said.

Police personnel from six districts have been deployed for the security arrangements and nearly 40 companies of Central Armed Police Forces have been pressed into action.

Hundreds of high-definition CCTV cameras with night vision have been installed across the Sardar Patel Marg where hotel ITC Maurya is located to monitor the situation round-the-clock, the officials said.

Five years ago, when Trump’s predecessor Barack Obama visited the national capital, the Delhi Police had rented 605 CCTV cameras and spent more than Rs one crore in hiring, installing and later removing them.

In view of the spiralling tensions between Iran and the US, there is a higher security threat this time and the agencies are more “cautious and alert” than ever, the sources said.

A senior police officer said, “We have also requested the anti-sabotage checking teams from paramilitary and army. They have been regularly conducting anti-sabotage checks along every route to be taken by the US President during his visit here”.

Besides the multi-layer security cover, elaborate arrangements have been made by the Delhi Police, including placement of double barricading on all the roads where Trump’s convoy is likely to pass, officials said, adding that aerial surveillance of the route will also be conducted as part of the security measures.

Jersey barriers (modular concrete or plastic barriers placed to organise traffic into lanes) will also be put up on the route, a senior police official said.

Delhi Police is also working in close coordination with civic bodies.

The route leading to a Delhi government school where US first lady Melania Trump is scheduled to pay a visit will also be under a high security cover, according to officials.

Trees have been trimmed according to the directions of the security agencies as part of the protocol.

Meetings have also been held with US security agents on the elaborate security arrangements in place.

At the ITC Maurya, a three-layer security will be in place.

The hotel, located in Diplomatic Enclave in Chanakyapuri, will have police personnel in plain clothes patrolling every floor.

Delhi Police’s security wing personnel will form part of the inner cordon that will work in close coordination with the United States Secret Service.

The security wing of the Delhi Police is a specialised unit tasked with the security of VIPs and visiting foreign dignitaries.

The second layer of security will be deployed around the hotel’s lobby area, parking, lawn area and the pool area, while the third one will comprise police personnel from the district police.

There is a large stretch of green ridge area opposite the hotel and security personnel will be deployed there as well.

Even at the neighbouring Taj Palace hotel, security personnel are maintaining a tight vigil.

The floor where the Grand Presidential Suite is located at the ITC Maurya is out of bounds for most hotel staff owing to the elaborate security arrangements.

Sources said security arrangements at the hotel have been underway for the last two weeks with NSG commandos and Delhi Police personnel surveying every floor on a daily basis. Officials from the US embassy are also monitoring the preparations with all details being kept under wraps.

The sources added that the hotel will be out of bounds for other guests during the time Trump and his entourage will be there, and all the 438 rooms of the five-star property have been booked.

Mahatma Gandhi’s former home gets facelift ahead of Trump’s first India visit

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

India deployed more than 10,000 police and gave a facelift to the former home of independence hero Mahatma Gandhi on Sunday on the eve of a visit by US President Donald Trump, whose two-day trip aims to repair bilateral relations after a trade spat.

India deployed more than 10,000 police and gave a facelift to the former home of independence hero Mahatma Gandhi on Sunday on the eve of a visit by US President Donald Trump, whose two-day trip aims to repair bilateral relations after a trade spat.

Trump lands in Ahmedabad on Monday, where he will address a rally of more than 100,000 in a newly-built cricket stadium, before a visit to Agra’s renowned Taj Mahal and a summit with Indian officials and business leaders in New Delhi.

In Ahmedabad, a wall at least six feet high in places will block a slum from Trump’s view.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has made grand visits to his home state of Gujarat a signature of his time in power, with the leaders of Japan and China both taking similar trips to Ahmedabad, the state’s largest city.

But the arrival of Trump, residents and officials say, is unprecedented in scale.

On Sunday, more than 10,000 police — some mounted on camels — fanned out across the city. At the Sabarmati Ashram, the former home of Mahatma Gandhi, labourers watered lawns and painted walls.

“A general facelift is being done,” said Kartikeya Sarabhai, a trustee of the organisation. “(But) the beauty of the Ashram is in its simplicity.”

The modest complex is a possible 15-minute stop on Monday for Trump, whose New York penthouse is decorated in gold in the style of French king Louis XIV.

Sarabhai said that should Trump visit, he is likely to be given a charkha, a traditional spinning wheel used by Gandhi, as well as a copy of his autobiography.

“We are also considering gifting a set of (Gandhi’s) Three Monkeys, which stress on not seeing, hearing, or speaking evil,” Sarabhai added.

Preparations have not been without problems.

A 30-foot arch by the VIP entrance to the stadium expected to be used by Trump collapsed on Sunday morning due to high winds, police said, though it was quickly repaired.

Knives out

There is enthusiasm among many in India for Trump’s arrival, but others have been angered at the cost — nearly $12 million for a three-hour visit, according to officials.

At the Saraniya Vas slum, authorities have built a wall at least six feet high in places, shielding the settlement from Trump’s view.

Many residents — who receive water for 90 minutes per day at communal taps — earn around Rs 7,500 ($104.36) per month sharpening knives for hotels, and are from the Saraniya community that gives the slum its name.

“Priority should be given to us — at least the basics should be provided,” said Sanjay Saraniya, a 27-year-old father of three, yards from the glossy tarmac of a newly-paved road and at least a dozen large billboards featuring Modi, Trump and his wife Melania.

“I wake up every morning and think about how I am going to earn enough money to feed my children.”

Half a dozen people said they had been offered Rs 200 ($2.78) each by the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party to attend the roadshow — a claim that Dashrath Saraniya (no relation), a party worker in the slum, denied.

“He is our guest and we will welcome him — if we can see him,” Sanjay Saraniya said of the visit.

Massive billboards come up across Agra to welcome Donald Trump

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

Huge billboards on streets near the city airport and public squares in the vicinity of the Taj Mahal greeting US President Donald Trump have come up ahead of his visit to Agra.

Huge billboards on streets near the city airport and public squares in the vicinity of the Taj Mahal greeting US President Donald Trump have come up ahead of his visit to Agra.

The billboards have added to the air of excitement in Agra that is eagerly expecting the arrival of Trump, who will be in the city for a couple of hours on Monday evening.

Trump’s convoy route from the airport to the Taj Mahal is about 13 km and along the way thousands of artistes will welcome him with special performances.

On the famous Mall Road, which falls on the route, one hoarding reads “His Excellency Donald J Trump, President of the United States of America, Heartiest Welcome to the Land of Krishna”.

It is accompanied with an image of Trump standing next to Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Another billboard features the two leaders shaking hands with the message “Welcome to the Land of Holy Rivers Yamuna and Ganga”.

Yet another one on the route says “Welcome to the Land of Rich Heritage of Art and Craft”.

Trump is slated to arrive in Agra on Monday evening after jointly attending with Modi the mega ‘Namaste Trump’ event at the newly built Motera cricket stadium in Ahmedabad earlier in the day.

The event has been named ‘Namaste Trump’ on the lines of the ‘Howdy, Modi’ programme organised in the US last year.

Trump’s daughter Ivanka, son-in-law Jared Kushner and a galaxy of top US officials will be part of the high-level delegation accompanying him during his visit to India on February 24 and 25.

The Agra administration is all geared up for the big day and preparations are in full swing to present the best face of Agra .

Another billboard shows Trump and Modi shaking hands with the message “Two great nations. One great friendship”, Namaste Trump, February 24″.

Outside the Agra Cantonment station at the Atal Chowk, a banner on Trump’s visit also greets people arriving in the city.

In Agra, the Trump family will spend about an hour at the Taj Mahal before sunset. They will then leave for Delhi.

A huge billboard near the Taj Mahal complex carrying the image of Trump and his wife reads “His Excellency Donald J Trump, President of the United States of America, Her Excellency Melania Trump First Lady of the United States of America, Welcoming you on behalf of the 1,350 million people of India”.

Another one says, “His Excellency Donald J Trump, President of the United States of America, welcome to the land of immense opportunities for investment”.

The Summit of Power: Your cheat-sheet to the five biggest takeaways from the Modi-Trump summit

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

This weekend, when you’re catching up on sleep or heading off for a weekend break, a small army of people are going to be working 24/7 to make sure Monday’s summit meeting between two of the world’s most powerful leaders goes off flawlessly.

This weekend, when you’re catching up on sleep or heading off for a weekend break, a small army of people are going to be working 24/7 to make sure Monday’s summit meeting between two of the world’s most powerful leaders goes off flawlessly. That doesn’t just include the thousands of government staff organising President Donald Trump and Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s roadshow in Gujarat, or the security staff who have the gargantuan job of making sure the unthinkable remains exactly that. Trade negotiators, defence experts, diplomats, politicians and intelligence officials are all going to burning the midnight oil, until the moment Air Force One touches down on Monday.

1. BACKSTAGE: THE NUTS AND BOLTS OF A PERFECT SUMMIT MEETING

  • Long before President Trump lands in Ahmedabad on Monday, hundreds of Secret Service Agents began working with India’s Intelligence Bureau and the Special Protection Group to make sure both he and Prime Minister Modi will be secure through the course of their two-day summit—no small challenge when they’ll be appearing before almost-impossible-to-police crowds of hundreds of thousands.
  • In addition to the specially-modified Boeing 747 Trump will be flying on, he’ll be bringing with him a car capable to withstanding explosive blasts—and top-secret communications equipment that can even let him unleash America’s nuclear arsenal remotely.
  • Through Monday and Tuesday, we’ll be casting light on the backroom boys who’ve put together the perfect summit—a cast of characters including spies and hospitality workers, hospitality workers and diplomats, who’ve worked to make this summit work.

2. THE ECONOMY: EXPECT NEGOTIATIONS TO BEGIN ON A COMPREHENSIVE ECONOMIC PARTNERSHIP AGREEMENT

  • The bedrock of the India-United States relationship, ever since it began to flower in the late-1980s, has been the economy—but, in recent years, protectionism in the United States and the slowdown in India have raised questions on its future.
  • The bad news is that India and the US won’t be signing the limited Free Trade Agreement many had hoped for. They’ve chosen, instead, to work on something far bigger: a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement, that will encompass not just duty-free trade of merchandise, but also free movement of professionals and easier investment norms.
  • The deal will take the time of hammer out, because of its enormous complexity, but when it’s done, it should be a game-changer.

3. DEFENCE: 8-10 BIG DEALS LIKELY TO FIRM UP, HELPING TO GROW THE INDIA-US PARTNERSHIP

  • From the early 2000s, the United States has emerged as India’s second-largest defence supplier. This visit will see the firming up of 8-10 major acquisition decisions, worth around $10 billion—among them, the $2.6bn. acquisition of 24 MH60 helicopters for the navy, and 6 AH64E Apache attack helicopters valued at $795 million.
  • There will also be negotiations on the acquisition of the NASAMS air-defence system, part of a three-tier ring to guard our cities, and the P8I long-range maritime surveillance aircraft.
  • The United States will also push for India to purchase its F21 combat jets. There are tensions in the relationship: the US hasn’t been as willing to part with technology for India’s indigenous defence industry as New Delhi hopes, while Washington is irked by New Delhi’s purchase of the S-400 air-defence system from Russia.
  • But the two sides have shown the ability to overcome differences in the past—laying the foundations for a defence relationship critical to shaping Asia’s future security.

4. ELEPHANT IN THE ROOM: WILL MODI AND TRUMP FIND MIDDLE-GROUND ON KASHMIR, AFGHANISTAN AND PAKISTAN?

  • Last month, President Trump set alarm bells ringing in New Delhi’s strategic establishment when he said he was negotiating borders, and a future course of action on Kashmir, with Pakistan’s prime minister, Imran Khan.
He’s irked New Delhi in the past by offering to mediate on Kashmir—an absolute no-no for India, which insists the conflict is a bilateral matter to be resolved with Pakistan.
  • That isn’t all: Trump’s peace deal with the Taliban holds out the prospect that the jihadist organisation, closely-linked to Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence, could soon wield significant power in Afghanistan.
  • For New Delhi, all this raises the nightmare prospect of a Pakistan Army more assertive in using its jihadist proxies against India. Behind closed doors, the two leaders will be discussing this complex geopolitical jigsaw puzzle, trying to find middle-ground.

5. ENDURING GAINS: THE ORDINARY INDIANS WHO’VE POWERED THE INDIA-US RELATIONSHIP, AND WHY THEY NEED THIS SUMMIT

  • Late in the nineteenth century, when the first Indian immigrants arrived in the United States as agricultural workers hoping for better lives, they could never have imagined where the community stands today.
  • Indians are now the second-largest foreign-born ethnic group in the United States, after Mexicans—and solidly represented at the top of its structure of power, including the economy, government, academia and politics.
  • Even though United States-born and Indian-born Americans together make up just 1 percent of the country’s population, too small a community to be of direct electoral significance, their influence gives them almost unrivalled heft and influence. Irrespective of the many crisis India and the United States have encountered over the decades, the community has ensured the relationship has grown.
  • Now, though, the community faces new challenges, ranging from visas to rising nationalism—and is hoping the goodwill from the summit will help resolve these problems.

PM Narendra Modi’s visit to Taj Mahal with Donald Trump in doubt

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Summary

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is unlikely to accompany US President Donald Trump and his family members during their visit to the Taj Mahal in Agra on Monday, official sources said.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is unlikely to accompany US President Donald Trump and his family members during their visit to the Taj Mahal in Agra on Monday, official sources said.

The US President will arrive in Ahmedabad at around noon on February 24 for a less than 36-hour visit to India. He will be accompanied by a high-level delegation including First Lady Melania Trump, the President’s daughter Ivanka Trump, son-in-law Jared Kushner and a galaxy of top US officials.

After attending an event at Ahmedabad, the Trumps will travel to Agra on Monday afternoon to visit the Taj Mahal before arriving at the national capital for the main leg of the visit.

When asked about reports that Modi may accompany Trump to Agra, official sources said there was no such plan. They said the visit to the Taj Mahal in Agra by the US President and his family members will afford them the opportunity to view the historical monument suitably. Therefore, no official engagements or presence of senior dignitaries from the Indian side is envisaged there, the sources said.

Modi will be in Ahmedabad on Monday where a public reception will be accorded to the US President and the First Lady. The Prime Minister will also be present for the Delhi leg of the visit where official engagements are envisaged on February 25, the sources said.

Meet ‘2018 Beast’: Everything you need to know about US President Donald Trump’s car

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

US President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania will be driven around in India in his ‘Beast’, a 2018 model of a unique Cadillac which serves as a miniature version of White House.

US President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania will be driven around in India in his ‘Beast’, a 2018 model of a unique Cadillac which serves as a miniature version of White House.

The presidential state car, maintained by the United States Secret Service, is transported in the hold of Air Force One, the Boeing 747, that is the President’s plane.

Technically, any fixed-wing plane that the President flies in becomes Air Force One, but the term usually means the Presidential 747.

Donald Trump’s The Beast. (IANS Infographics)

Air Force One is not only a flying Presidential palace with conference rooms and staff, but the US President is also able to act as commander-in-chief from aboard the plane.

He can direct wars or even nuclear war if it comes to that. It also carries the Beast with it in the hold for the President when he is on the ground, almost anywhere in the world.

The Presidential Cadillac is actually a giant Chevrolet SUV platform underneath a body designed to look like a Cadillac. That gives it the ability to be armoured, tough and able to hammer its way out of a crisis situation, while at the same time being a rolling symbol of American class.

“All the other big shots in the world have to buy armoured Mercedes or Rolls Royces or BMWs. The American President travels with his own luxury war machine, like a little White House on wheels,” Harbir Singh, an automobile expert said.

Until the assassination of John F. Kennedy, US Presidents would often stand and ride uncovered in their state cars for the sake of their fans. However, Kennedy’s assassination led to tight security regimen with the introduction of bullet-proof, armoured and sealed cars.

Motorcades escorting the US presidential state car constitute around 50 vehicles maintained by White House Military Office and helicopters of Marine One.

US secret service agents, for the last several months, have been scrutinizing every detail of President Trump’s travel logistics and secure exits in case of an attack in New Delhi, Agra and Ahmedabad.
