India will play South Africa in the the first of the two Tests starting here on Tuesday. “Want to achieve what nobody has achieved in this part of the world,” Rohit said during the pre-match press conference.

Brushes aside retirement plans

Rohit also did not want to speak about his cricketing future, just saying that he wants to enjoy the game. “I want to play whatever cricket is there in front of me,” he said without elaborating his plans.

Updates on KL Rahul and Mohammed Shami

KL Rahul is expected to keep wickets in the first Test but the skipper said it will be is up to wicketkeeper-batter to decide how long he wants to don the gloves in the five-day format.

“I am not sure how long KL Rahul would want to keep wickets but he is keen as of now,” said Rohit. India’s World Cup hero, Mohammed Shami has been ruled out of the series with an ankle injury and Rohit termed the speedster’s absence as a big loss.

“Shami will be a big miss for what he has done for us over the years. Someone will fill up (the) hole but it won’t be easy,” he said.

Sunil Gavaskar supports Hardik Pandya replacing Rohit Sharma as Mumbai Indians skipper

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

Gavaskar believes that Rohit had become fatigued and was unable to contribute substantially with the bat in the past few seasons. Pandya was roped in MI from Gujarat Titans (GT) in an all-cash trade last month.

Former India skipper Sunil Gavaskar supports the move by Mumbai Indians (MI) to replace seasoned skipper Rohit Sharma with Hardik Pandya as the captain from the coming Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 season onwards. Gavaskar believes that Rohit had become fatigued and was unable to contribute substantially with the bat in the past few seasons. Pandya was roped in MI from Gujarat Titans (GT) in an all-cash trade last month.

Rohit and Chennai Super Kings skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni are the most successful captains in the IPL, guiding their teams to five titles each in the lucrative league. However, Mumbai Indians have gone without a title since 2021, finishing last in the 2022 edition. Gavaskar said that it could be because Rohit is “fatigued” since he has been playing continuously not only as IPL team skipper but also as the India captain.

MI was unenthusiastic lately: Gavaskar

“See, we don’t have to look at it (decision appoint Hardik as MI captain) as right or wrong. The decision they (MI) have taken has been for the benefit of the team. We can say that the contribution of Rohit, even with the bat, has become slightly lesser,” Gavaskar told Star Sports. “Earlier, there used to be a lot of contribution (with bat) from Rohit, but in the last few years, they have finished at number 9 or 10. And last year they qualified for the playoffs, but the ‘josh’ (enthusiasm) of Mumbai Indians was not there to be seen as we have seen in the past.

“Maybe because he has played cricket continuously he must have been fatigued, constantly captaining the Indian side and then Mumbai Indians,” added Gavaskar. Hardik, after leading Gujarat Titans to title triumph in the team’s inaugural year in 2022 also led his side to runners-up finish this year. The cricketer-turned-commentator felt Hardik has proved himself for the Gujarat franchise and his return to Mumbai Indians will infuse fresh ideas into the side.

Hardik brings in fresh thought process

“So, the decision that they have taken, he is a young player, young in terms of captaining a side, who has proven himself, taking Gujarat Titans to the finals twice and winning it once. “So with the same thought process, they have made him captain. Because sometimes you need that fresh thinking, and he can bring that fresh thinking and I think the decision that has been taken, Mumbai Indians can benefit from it and won’t damage them,” he added.

Sourav Ganguly banks on Rohit Sharma to be Indian captain till ICC T20 World Cup

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

Rohit Sharma, who led India to the ODI World Cup final at home, and Virat Kohli have taken a “break” and will miss the white-ball leg of the upcoming South Africa tour, beginning December 10.

Impressed with his captaincy at the ODI World Cup, former captain Sourav Ganguly on Friday threw his weight behind Rohit Sharma, saying he should lead India at least till the T20 World Cup in June next year. Rohit, who led India to the ODI World Cup final at home, and Virat Kohli have taken a “break” and will miss the white-ball leg of the upcoming South Africa tour, beginning December 10.

Talking to reporters, Ganguly said the duo deserved rest so that they come back “fresh” for the hectic calendar ahead. “Once Rohit is back playing all formats, he should be the captain of India, because he has done so well in the World Cup,” said the former BCCI president, who was named the Dabur Chyawanprash’s brand ambassador for East India, during a program here.

“You saw in the World Cup how well they played. They are absolutely integral and an important part of Indian cricket.” Interestingly, both Rohit and Kohli haven’t played a T20I since the semifinals against England in the 2022 T20 World Cup and the BCCI was not clear whether the duo should be in India’s scheme of things for the T20 global showpiece in six months time. After the 2022 T20 World Cup, Hardik Pandya was named India’s T20 captain but following his injury during the ODI World Cup, Suryakumar Yadav is leading the team in the ongoing five-T20 series against Australia.

“World Cups are different than a bilateral series because the pressures are different. They have been exceptional this World Cup and hopefully six-seven months down the line in the West Indies they will be again at their best,” Ganguly said. “He’s (Rohit) a leader. I expect and I presume that he will continue as captain till the T20 World Cup in 2024.” The duo will be back for the two-Test series in South Africa beginning with the Boxing Day Test in Centurion.

“Very rightfully, they have taken a break because there is so much cricket all the time. I cannot imagine that you played a World Cup final on the 19th and in three days’ time you’re playing a T20I series against the same team,” Ganguly said. “It is not easy to pick yourselves up, especially with the pressures and demands of the World Cup. I’m happy that they have got a break.

“They will come back fresh for Tests there’re five Tests against England there’s IPL, and then the T20 World Cup, so it’s non-stop cricket. Hopefully they’ll come back fresh and keep performing.” The BCCI has also extended the contract of India head coach Rahul Dravid at least till the T20 World Cup, even though the exact duration of his second term is not yet known. It was during Ganguly’s BCCI tenure that Dravid had become the head coach and the former India lefthander was happy for his teammate’s contract extension.

“I’m not surprised that they have shown faith in Dravid. When I was president of the Board, we convinced him to do this job. And I’m so happy to see yesterday that his tenure has been extended. “It was always the case, depending on whether he wanted it or not. I wish him luck for another World Cup in June. He was very close this time.

“They may not have won it, but they probably were the best team in the competition with the way they played. So he’s got another seven months for a World Cup in the West Indies. Hopefully, at that time, he will not be runners-up, but a champion,” he said.

Asked about India’s title drought at an ICC global showpiece, Ganguly said, “Hopefully they will cross the bridge one day.” “As a captain, I’ve qualified for three finals, and lost twice 2003 World Cup and 2001 Champions Trophy. So I don’t have the right to say how to win finals. I managed just one win that too as joint winners with Sri Lanka (2002 Champions Trophy),” he said.

“At least, they are making the final and by dominating the tournament. Hopefully they will cross the bridge one day, their luck will change. There is no rocket science. “At Australia 47/3, India had a great chance, one wicket and it would have been different. But it’s past now.”

“At some point of time you have to play new talents. It happens, there is enormous talent in India and the team has to progress. Pujara and Rahane had enormous success for India, sport doesn’t remain with you forever,” Ganguly said. “You cannot be there forever, it will happen to everyone. I must thank them what they have done for Indian cricket and selectors want fresh faces, so that’s the way it is.”

During the Men’s Selection Committee meeting in New Delhi on Thursday, BCCI informed that Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli had requested the Board for a break from the white-ball cricket in India’s tour of South Africa.

Virat Kohli’s unavailability was confirmed during the week by BCCI sources but after ICC ODI World Cup fatigue looks like Rohit has also taken some time off from the short format games.

With regular T20 skipper Hardik Pandya out for another month post an ankle ligament tear during the recently-concluded ODI World Cup, the choice was between entrusting Suryakumar Yadav and KL Rahul with the limited overs responsibility.

It must be mentioned that Rohit had earlier said that he doesn’t want to play the T20 format but the way he led the side in the ODI World Cup has convinced the BCCI that he should continue in white-ball till the T20 World Cup in the Americas in June-July.

Hardik Pandya returns back to Mumbai Indians after an all-cash deal trade-off with Gujarat Titans

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

On Sunday at 5 pm, Gujarat Titans annouced that they have retained all-rounder Hardik Pandya as their captain for the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) season, amid speculations that he could join Mumbai Indians ahead of the December 19 auction.

Hardik Pandya returns back to Mumbai Indians after an all-cash deal trade-off with Gujarat Titans which was completed following 72 hours of intense drama. Originally played for Mumbai Indians, Pandya proved to hold a successful leadership profile after winning the cup for Gujarat in his first year as a captain and reaching a thriller final in the last IPL season.

On Sunday at 5 pm, Gujarat Titans announced that they have retained all-rounder Hardik Pandya as their captain for the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) season, amid speculations that he could join Mumbai Indians ahead of the December 19 auction.

However, it was learned that the formal paperwork wasn’t yet completed and hence IPL and BCCI didn’t give the green light of approval for the most anticipated move of this transfer season. “Yes, Hardik’s trade-off was completed after 5 pm. The deal is now formalised and he is an MI player. It’s been a tripartite all-cash deal. MI have traded their all-rounder Cameron Green to RCB in an all-cash deal. After that they had requisite funds to settle an all-cash deal with Gujarat Titans and procure Hardik’s services,” a senior BCCI official and IPL Governing Council member said.

Pandya had joined Gujarat Titans as their captain in 2022. Speculations were rife that Pandya could rejoin Mumbai Indians, ending his two-year association with the Titans ahead of the IPL 2024. It was expected to be an all-cash trade with Mumbai but in the end, Pandya and the Titans found a way out to continue their journey together, at least for now.

While the Mumbai side named Rohit Sharma as their captain for IPL 2024, England pacer Jofra Archer has been released. Archer is still recuperating from an elbow surgery.

Skipper Rohit Sharma likely to step away from T20 internationals: Reports

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

Rohit had discussed his future in the shortest format before the start of the 50-over World Cup, according to sources in the BCCI. Since November 2022’s T20 World Cup, Hardik Pandya has mostly led the Indian team in 20-over matches.

Indian captain Rohit Sharma who hasn’t played a single T20I match after India’s T20 World Cup semi-final exit in November 2022, is likely to put his shoes up from the shorted format.

Rohit had discussed his future in the shortest format before the start of the 50-over World Cup, according to sources in the BCCI. Since November 2022’s T20 World Cup, Hardik Pandya has mostly led the Indian team in 20-over matches.

The 36-year-old India skipper has played 148 T20Is scoring 3853 runs at a strike-rate of nearly 140 with four hundreds. “It is not a new development. Rohit hasn’t played any T20Is in the past year as the focus was on ODI World Cup. He had extensive discussions with the chairman of selectors Ajit Agarkar in this regard. He has himself volunteered to stay away from T20Is. It has completely been Rohit’s call,” a senior BCCI source told.

Suryakumar Yadav will lead team India in the T20s against Australia. The scheduling in international cricket is such that both India and Australia will return to the field in the opening game of the five-match T20 series starting here on Thursday, albeit with a different set of players, 96 hours after the World Cup final in Ahmedabad.

Rohit, Virat Kohli and K L Rahul are not part of the squad having played their last T20 match in the World Cup last year. The T20 squad is full of IPL performers who are yet to prove themselves at the highest level. The likes of Rinku Singh, who made his debut in Ireland and was also part of the Asian Games, and Tilak Varma, will face their toughest test in international cricket against Australia.

Rohit Sharma recalls the chat with Shami discussing why he was missed out in the early stage of ICC World Cup

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

Credit goes to Rohit Sharma and the team management that Shami managed to hit the ground running immediately after the vice-captain’s ankle injury. The captain elaborated on what the chat with Shami during the initial games, as he lauded the 33-year-old for being a thorough team man.

Rohit Sharma’s explosive batting has been appreciated along with his captaincy and the way he stood by his players during injuries or while they waited for their turn in the dugout.

One of the gems that kept waiting for the call was Mohammed Shami who got his break in the ICC World Cup when Hardik Pandya got injured in a league match against Bangladesh.

Credit goes to Rohit Sharma and the team management that Shami managed to hit the ground running immediately after the vice-captain’s ankle injury. The captain elaborated on what the chat with Shami during the initial games, as he lauded the 33-year-old for being a thorough team man.

“It was tough for him to not play the initial part of the World Cup, looking at him being one of the senior bowlers for us,” Rohit said. “But he was there for the team. He was there to help Siraj and Bumrah in whatever ways he could. And that shows the team man that he is.

Shami’s final bowling figures of 7 wickets for 57 runs are now the best bowling figures by an Indian cricketer not just in ODI World Cups but in India’s entire ODI history. His figures surpassed Ashish Nehra’s bowling figures of 6/23 against England in Durban in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 and Stuart Binny’s figures of 6/4 versus Bangladesh in Mirpur in 2014.

“It was very clear, we had a chat about why he missed out and everything. And then obviously on the sidelines, he was working on his bowling.

Having represented India in 3 ODI World Cups to date starting in 2015, Shami is now the fastest to reach the tally of 50 wickets in World Cups in only 17 matches, pipping Mitchell Starc’s record of dismissing 50 batsmen in 19 matches.

“Now, the results are there for everyone to see how he has come back from that. That shows the kind of mental space that Shami was in before the World Cup and even now. It’s not easy not being part of the team and coming out to do the job the way he has done for us. Says a lot about him.

This is what Rahul Dravid thought about Rohit Sharma’s aggressive batting in the powerplay overs

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

Rohit has scored 550 runs in the tournament – including 354 in the first 10 overs of matches – but the powerful right-hander has shown he can drop anchor too, as he did in his 101-ball 87 against England after India slipped to 40-3 inside 12 overs.

Indian skipper Rohit Sharma has been leading by example with the bat, going all guns blazing right from the start of the powerplay to put the pressure right back on opposition teams. On Saturday, just a day before the mega finale of ICC ODI World Cup Rohit addressed the media as India gears to face five-time champion Australia at the Narendra Modi stadium.

Rohit has scored 550 runs in the tournament – including 354 in the first 10 overs of matches – but the powerful right-hander has shown he can drop anchor too, as he did in his 101-ball 87 against England after India slipped to 40-3 inside 12 overs.

During the press conference, Rohit emphasised the understated role of Head Coach Rahul Dravid in India’s run as well as his own batting, while emphasizing the team’s determination to win the trophy in honour of the Indian legend.

“Dravid’s role has been absolutely massive in terms of getting that clarity which I keep talking about,” Rohit stated. “It’s one thing for me to think about and another thing for the coach to not agree to certain things.

“Clearly, looking at how Rahul bhai himself has played his cricket and how I play these days is quite contrasting. For him to agree and give me that freedom and liberty to go and play like that says a lot about him.”

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has announced a whopping USD 10 million to be distributed in the entire tournament. The champion team will walk away with USD 4 million and the team finishing the event as the runners-up will get USD 2 million.

In addition to that, USD 40,000 is awarded to all ten teams for every win that they registered during the league stage of the 50-over extravaganza. As New Zealand and South Africa exited in the semi-finals they will each receive USD 800,000 from ICC.

Sunday’s final will feature a home crowd of over 100,000 at Narendra Modi Stadium. “The good thing is a few of us have been there for finals before,” Cummins said. “Got to embrace it, the stadium is going to be packed, pretty one-sided but got to embrace it. The 2015 World Cup was a career highlight, so to be out there in a final in India, can’t wait.”

IND vs NZ: Rohit Sharma reveals his secret favourite dish that Indian skipper prefers to eat all across world

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

Recently, in an interaction with Vimal Kumar when the Indian skipper was asked about his preferred diet in India and international soils, Sharma said that he goes to food with rice and lentils.

Rohit Sharma has been giving back-to-back record-breaking performances in the ICC World Cup 2023.

In the game against New Zealand, Sharma hit a new record by becoming the batter to hit the most sixes in ODI World Cup history, surpassing the 49 hit by Caribbean superstar Chris Gayle amidst his quickfire start to the Indian innings in the ICC Men’s ODI World Cup 2023 semi-final fixture at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.

Recently, in an interaction with journalist Vimal Kumar, the Indian skipper was asked about his preferred diet in India and on international soils. Sharma said that he prefers to go with simple foodlike rice and lentils. “Dal-chawal and Rasam chawal is something that I have grown up eating and lentils are something you get easily internationally also.”

Rohit scored 48 to give India a strong start in the last-four clash against the Kiwis. Kohli top-scored with 117 as Shreyas Iyer chipped in with a century too to take India to the highest-ever total by any team in knockouts of the ICC ODI World Cup.

Unlike Kohli, Rohit hasn’t been getting big scores under his belt. However, he is donning a critical role up top, helping the team maximise the powerplay overs. With a fearless approach, Rohit is taking on pacers and that resulted in both Trent Boult and Tim Southee starting off on a dismal note in the semis. Boult conceded 81 as Southee gave away 100 in their respective 10-over spells.

In other news, Kohli brought up his 50th ODI ton, surpassing the great Sachin Tendulkar amidst his presence in the Wankhede stands on Wednesday.
