Summary

India has a 3-1 lead in the series and has been dominating the final test match right from the start. Indian bowlers bowled out England for 218 at the picturesque Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium.

Indian captain Rohit Sharma and opener Shubman Gill gave a sensational start to India’s innings on day two of the fifth and final test against England on Friday. Both the batter held their grounds and struck a perfect 100 and combined in a burgeoning 160-run stand for the unbroken second wicket to put India firmly in the lead.

India has a 3-1 lead in the series and has been dominating the final test match right from the start. Indian bowlers bowled out England for 218 at the picturesque Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium.

Home captain Rohit got a life on 68 when Zak Crawley missed a sharp catch at backward short leg but that was as close as England came to a breakthrough before lunch. India was 264-1 at the break with Rohit on 102, his second hundred of the series that included three sixes. Gill was the more aggressive of the pair, smacking five sixes in his stellar 101 not out.

The overnight batters went after the bowlers right from the word go. The one shot that epitomised their approach was when Gill stepped out against James Anderson and hit test cricket’s most successful fast bowler over his head for a six.

Spinner Shoaib Bashir got a flick from Rohit but the ball flew past Crawley before the fielder could even cup his hand. Rohit took a single off Tom Hartley to bring up his hundred, while Gill slog-swept Bashir for a four in the next over to reach the 100 mark.

Rohit Sharma emphasises on domestic cricket unless declared ‘unfit’

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

Ever since BCCI excluded Ishan Kishan and Shreyas Iyer from the pool of centrally contracted cricketers after they ignored the board’s diktat on Ranji Trophy, Rohit Sharma gave a bold statement regarding domestic cricket.

Ahead of the fifth Test match in Dharamshala, Indian skipper, Rohit Sharma asked players to not just prioritise one format and play domestic cricket as well until declared “unfit” by the BCCI’s medical team.  The Indian Cricket Board advised all contracted cricketers to give “precedence” to domestic cricket.

Ever since BCCI excluded Ishan Kishan and Shreyas Iyer from the pool of centrally contracted cricketers after they ignored the board’s diktat on Ranji Trophy, Rohit Sharma gave a bold statement regarding domestic cricket.

Ahead of the final Test against England, Rohit made it clear that the move applies to all and not a few players. “There has been talk about this for a long, long time. When the players are available, they’ve got to make themselves available to play domestic cricket, unless they have been given a certificate from the medical group that they want to be rested or will not be taking part in domestic cricket, but if you are available, if you are fit, if you’re fine, it is important that we go and play that,” said Rohit.

“It is not for just a few cricketers, it is for everyone to make sure that whenever you’re available, and fine, you should be able to play domestic cricket.” Rohit is busy preparing for the Dharamsala Test but still found time to track the recently concluded semi-finals of the Ranji Trophy that saw participation from his domestic side Mumbai.

“You saw the Ranji trophy that was played this week. I watched Mumbai and Tamil Nadu, obviously there was an exciting game happening today as well, I think Vidarbha won on Wednesday. “When games like that happen, you see the quality and everything coming into display for everyone to watch. It is important that we give importance to domestic cricket, which is the core of Indian cricket,” said the skipper.

Captain Rohit Sharma takes a dig on Indian players trying to avoid Test cricket

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

Virat Kohli, KL Rahul, Mohammad Shami opted out of the series and Ravindra Jadeja, Jasprit Bumrah’s partial contribution made it a challenging win. However, Sarfaraz Khan’s impactful debut in Rajkot and Dhruv Jurel’s Player of the Match-winning performance in Ranchi proved that India’s young brigade is ready to take things forward.

India played the England series without a bunch of key players or in other words paved way for a bunch of budding players.

“I have spoken enough about key players missing, so I don’t want to talk about it more. But the guys who have come in have done the job perfectly, they have taken the responsibility. You can take a lot of pride from performances like this. Test cricket throws at you different types of challenges and pressures but the way the youngsters have dealt with it throughout the series has been superb. In a way, you can say that this series was a glimpse into the future of Indian Test cricket. Some of these guys are quite young and you will see these guys playing for the coming 5-10 years regularly in this format for sure.” Rohit Sharma said in the post-match press conference.

Captain also took a dig at players like Ishan Kishan and Shreyas Iyer who are unwilling to play in Test cricket and stayed out of the Ranji Cup trophy this year.

“Test cricket is the toughest format, and if you want success and want to excel in this tough format then you need that hunger. It is very important. We will give opportunity only to players who have that hunger. You come to know easily the players who don’t have that hunger or players who don’t want to stay here. We come to know that”.

“Players who have that hunger, players who want to stay here and perform, and play in tough conditions, we will give preference to them. It is pretty simple: if you don’t have hunger, there’s no meaning in playing such players.”

Overnight 40/0 in a chase of 192 here, India romped home after surviving a few hiccups with the opening duo of skipper Rohit Sharma (55 off 81 balls) and Yashasvi Jaiswal (37 off 44 balls) providing the perfect platform for others to build with their 84-run stand on day four of the match.

There were some jitters after the two departed in close succession followed by Rajat Patidar and Ravindra Jadeja’s dismissal but Shubman Gill (52 not out) and Dhruv Jurel (39 not out) guided the side past the finishing line with an unbeaten 72-run partnership.

India leads 3-1 in the series with the last game scheduled in Dharamsala on March 7. The team’s last home series loss was a 1-2 defeat to an Alastair Cook-led England in 2012-13. Since then, India has won 39 out of 50 Tests at home.

BCCI confirms Rohit Sharma to captain India in T20 World Cup 2024, Hardik snubbed

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

BCCI secretary Jay Shah made the announcement in the presence of the Indian squad at the venue of the third India-England Test match in Rajkot on Wednesday.

Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) secretary Jay Shah has confirmed that Rohit Sharma will lead the country in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup that will be jointly hosted by the West Indies and the Uanited States of America (USA) later this year. The board is of the belief that Rohit must be at the helm of the side as Hardik Pandya is still recovering from ankle injury that he picked up against Bangladesh in Pune in the ODI World Cup in October last year.

Concerns over Pandya’s injury track record

“Rohit was captaining (in the past in other formats) and he came back for the Afghanistan series, which means we were going to let him continue forward,” Shah told the media on the sidelines of the ceremony to rename the SCA Stadium after former board secretary Niranjan Shah. ”

If Hardik was injured in the (2023 ODI) World Cup, who else can we give the captaincy?” asked Shah, indicating if the all-rounder gets injured during the course of the 2024 T20 World Cup, who will replace him as captain.

Confidence in Rohit’s batting

“In the third T20I against Afghanistan, India were 22/4 and the way he (Rohit Sharma) took the team to 212/4, we can’t question much about him, right?” he added. “He (Rohit) has the ability, as I said, we won 10 games in the ODI World Cup. We didn’t win the final, but it’s part and parcel of the game. Whoever plays better, wins,” Shah expressed.

Earlier during the function to rename the SCA Stadium, Shah said, “In 2023 (final) at Ahmedabad, even though we did not win the World Cup after 10 straight wins, we won hearts. I want to promise you that in 2024 (T20 World Cup) in Barbados (venue for the final), under Rohit Sharma’s captaincy, ham Bharat ka jhanda gaadenge (we will hoist the Indian flag).”

Shah made the speech in front of a gathering of several dignitaries including former India captains Sunil Gavaskar and Anil Kumble and IPL chairman Arun Dhumal. The event also featured current chief selector Ajit Agarkar, incumbent head coach Rahul Dravid, Rohit, Mohammed Siraj, Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel and a few members of the Indian team support staff.

Glenn Maxwell equals Rohit Sharma’s record for the most number of tons in T20I

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

Glenn Maxwell shared a 92-run partnership with Tim David (31 off 14 balls) to propel Australia to 241-4 and the highest T20 international score at Adelaide Oval.

Glenn Maxwell equals Indian captain Rohit Sharma’s record for the most tons in the T20I format after scoring a blistering 120 runs against West Indies. In the 2nd T20 match on Sunday, Maxwell smashed 120 runs in just 55 balls, including 12 boundaries and 8 sixes.

He shared a 92-run partnership with Tim David (31 off 14 balls) to propel Australia to 241-4 and the highest T20 international score at Adelaide Oval.

After his fifth T20 international century, Maxwell has now equaled the record held by India’s Rohit Sharma in 20 over format. “It was good fun, that’s for sure. Always good batting here, we saw in the Big Bash how good the wickets were during the tournament. The wicket was nice and true. I have always relied on my hand speed, which worked for me today. Give me the best chance always. My parents are here In Adelaide as well. Nice to play a positive knock,” the player said during the mid-innings break.

“We’re extremely lucky to have (Maxwell) in our team,” Australia captain Mitch Marsh said. “He’s a match winner, game changer and people come to watch him.”

The West Indies chase was derailed by the loss of five wickets in the first seven overs, but a rally led by captain Rovman Powell (63 off 36 balls) and Andre Russell (37 off 16 balls) briefly gave the tourists hope of reeling in the mammoth target. But the weight of the chase ultimately proved too much as Marcus Stoinis (3-36) and debutant Spencer Johnson (2-39) led Australia’s bowlers in restricting the West Indies chase to 207-9 in its 20 overs.

Earlier, Australia slipped to a precarious 64-3 after 6.4 overs after being asked to bat first, with Josh Inglis (four), Marsh (29 off 12 balls) and David Warner (22 off 19 balls) all holing-out playing expansive shots.

Australia beat West Indies by 11 runs in the first match in Hobart on Friday. The third game of the three-match series will be played on Tuesday at Perth. The home team is playing six T20s over the next three weeks, routed West Indies 3-0 in the ODI series.

India had come touchingly close to emerging victorious in their previous red-ball contests in South Africa, back in 2017-18 and 2021-22, respectively.

India will play South Africa in the the first of the two Tests starting here on Tuesday. “Want to achieve what nobody has achieved in this part of the world,” Rohit said during the pre-match press conference.

Brushes aside retirement plans

Rohit also did not want to speak about his cricketing future, just saying that he wants to enjoy the game. “I want to play whatever cricket is there in front of me,” he said without elaborating his plans.

Updates on KL Rahul and Mohammed Shami

KL Rahul is expected to keep wickets in the first Test but the skipper said it will be is up to wicketkeeper-batter to decide how long he wants to don the gloves in the five-day format.

“I am not sure how long KL Rahul would want to keep wickets but he is keen as of now,” said Rohit. India’s World Cup hero, Mohammed Shami has been ruled out of the series with an ankle injury and Rohit termed the speedster’s absence as a big loss.

“Shami will be a big miss for what he has done for us over the years. Someone will fill up (the) hole but it won’t be easy,” he said.

Sunil Gavaskar supports Hardik Pandya replacing Rohit Sharma as Mumbai Indians skipper

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

Gavaskar believes that Rohit had become fatigued and was unable to contribute substantially with the bat in the past few seasons. Pandya was roped in MI from Gujarat Titans (GT) in an all-cash trade last month.

Former India skipper Sunil Gavaskar supports the move by Mumbai Indians (MI) to replace seasoned skipper Rohit Sharma with Hardik Pandya as the captain from the coming Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 season onwards. Gavaskar believes that Rohit had become fatigued and was unable to contribute substantially with the bat in the past few seasons. Pandya was roped in MI from Gujarat Titans (GT) in an all-cash trade last month.

Rohit and Chennai Super Kings skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni are the most successful captains in the IPL, guiding their teams to five titles each in the lucrative league. However, Mumbai Indians have gone without a title since 2021, finishing last in the 2022 edition. Gavaskar said that it could be because Rohit is “fatigued” since he has been playing continuously not only as IPL team skipper but also as the India captain.

MI was unenthusiastic lately: Gavaskar

“See, we don’t have to look at it (decision appoint Hardik as MI captain) as right or wrong. The decision they (MI) have taken has been for the benefit of the team. We can say that the contribution of Rohit, even with the bat, has become slightly lesser,” Gavaskar told Star Sports. “Earlier, there used to be a lot of contribution (with bat) from Rohit, but in the last few years, they have finished at number 9 or 10. And last year they qualified for the playoffs, but the ‘josh’ (enthusiasm) of Mumbai Indians was not there to be seen as we have seen in the past.

“Maybe because he has played cricket continuously he must have been fatigued, constantly captaining the Indian side and then Mumbai Indians,” added Gavaskar. Hardik, after leading Gujarat Titans to title triumph in the team’s inaugural year in 2022 also led his side to runners-up finish this year. The cricketer-turned-commentator felt Hardik has proved himself for the Gujarat franchise and his return to Mumbai Indians will infuse fresh ideas into the side.

Hardik brings in fresh thought process

“So, the decision that they have taken, he is a young player, young in terms of captaining a side, who has proven himself, taking Gujarat Titans to the finals twice and winning it once. “So with the same thought process, they have made him captain. Because sometimes you need that fresh thinking, and he can bring that fresh thinking and I think the decision that has been taken, Mumbai Indians can benefit from it and won’t damage them,” he added.

Sourav Ganguly banks on Rohit Sharma to be Indian captain till ICC T20 World Cup

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

Rohit Sharma, who led India to the ODI World Cup final at home, and Virat Kohli have taken a “break” and will miss the white-ball leg of the upcoming South Africa tour, beginning December 10.

Impressed with his captaincy at the ODI World Cup, former captain Sourav Ganguly on Friday threw his weight behind Rohit Sharma, saying he should lead India at least till the T20 World Cup in June next year. Rohit, who led India to the ODI World Cup final at home, and Virat Kohli have taken a “break” and will miss the white-ball leg of the upcoming South Africa tour, beginning December 10.

Talking to reporters, Ganguly said the duo deserved rest so that they come back “fresh” for the hectic calendar ahead. “Once Rohit is back playing all formats, he should be the captain of India, because he has done so well in the World Cup,” said the former BCCI president, who was named the Dabur Chyawanprash’s brand ambassador for East India, during a program here.

“You saw in the World Cup how well they played. They are absolutely integral and an important part of Indian cricket.” Interestingly, both Rohit and Kohli haven’t played a T20I since the semifinals against England in the 2022 T20 World Cup and the BCCI was not clear whether the duo should be in India’s scheme of things for the T20 global showpiece in six months time. After the 2022 T20 World Cup, Hardik Pandya was named India’s T20 captain but following his injury during the ODI World Cup, Suryakumar Yadav is leading the team in the ongoing five-T20 series against Australia.

“World Cups are different than a bilateral series because the pressures are different. They have been exceptional this World Cup and hopefully six-seven months down the line in the West Indies they will be again at their best,” Ganguly said. “He’s (Rohit) a leader. I expect and I presume that he will continue as captain till the T20 World Cup in 2024.” The duo will be back for the two-Test series in South Africa beginning with the Boxing Day Test in Centurion.

“Very rightfully, they have taken a break because there is so much cricket all the time. I cannot imagine that you played a World Cup final on the 19th and in three days’ time you’re playing a T20I series against the same team,” Ganguly said. “It is not easy to pick yourselves up, especially with the pressures and demands of the World Cup. I’m happy that they have got a break.

“They will come back fresh for Tests there’re five Tests against England there’s IPL, and then the T20 World Cup, so it’s non-stop cricket. Hopefully they’ll come back fresh and keep performing.” The BCCI has also extended the contract of India head coach Rahul Dravid at least till the T20 World Cup, even though the exact duration of his second term is not yet known. It was during Ganguly’s BCCI tenure that Dravid had become the head coach and the former India lefthander was happy for his teammate’s contract extension.

“I’m not surprised that they have shown faith in Dravid. When I was president of the Board, we convinced him to do this job. And I’m so happy to see yesterday that his tenure has been extended. “It was always the case, depending on whether he wanted it or not. I wish him luck for another World Cup in June. He was very close this time.

“They may not have won it, but they probably were the best team in the competition with the way they played. So he’s got another seven months for a World Cup in the West Indies. Hopefully, at that time, he will not be runners-up, but a champion,” he said.

Asked about India’s title drought at an ICC global showpiece, Ganguly said, “Hopefully they will cross the bridge one day.” “As a captain, I’ve qualified for three finals, and lost twice 2003 World Cup and 2001 Champions Trophy. So I don’t have the right to say how to win finals. I managed just one win that too as joint winners with Sri Lanka (2002 Champions Trophy),” he said.

“At least, they are making the final and by dominating the tournament. Hopefully they will cross the bridge one day, their luck will change. There is no rocket science. “At Australia 47/3, India had a great chance, one wicket and it would have been different. But it’s past now.”

“At some point of time you have to play new talents. It happens, there is enormous talent in India and the team has to progress. Pujara and Rahane had enormous success for India, sport doesn’t remain with you forever,” Ganguly said. “You cannot be there forever, it will happen to everyone. I must thank them what they have done for Indian cricket and selectors want fresh faces, so that’s the way it is.”

BCCI reveals Rohit and Virat requested a break from the white-ball cricket in India’s tour of South Africa

During the Men’s Selection Committee meeting in New Delhi on Thursday, BCCI informed that Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli had requested the Board for a break from the white-ball cricket in India’s tour of South Africa.

During the Men’s Selection Committee meeting in New Delhi on Thursday, BCCI informed that Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli had requested the Board for a break from the white-ball cricket in India’s tour of South Africa.

Virat Kohli’s unavailability was confirmed during the week by BCCI sources but after ICC ODI World Cup fatigue looks like Rohit has also taken some time off from the short format games.

With regular T20 skipper Hardik Pandya out for another month post an ankle ligament tear during the recently-concluded ODI World Cup, the choice was between entrusting Suryakumar Yadav and KL Rahul with the limited overs responsibility.

It must be mentioned that Rohit had earlier said that he doesn’t want to play the T20 format but the way he led the side in the ODI World Cup has convinced the BCCI that he should continue in white-ball till the T20 World Cup in the Americas in June-July.

India’s squad for 3 ODIs: Ruturaj Gaikwad, Sai Sudharsan, Tilak Varma, Rajat Patidar, Rinku Singh, Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul (C)(wk), Sanju Samson (wk), Axar Patel, Washington Sundar, Kuldeep Yadav, Yuzvendra Chahal, Mukesh Kumar, Avesh Khan, Arshdeep Singh, Deepak Chahar.
