‘Fatigued’ Rohit Sharma must take a break before T20 World Cup, says Michael Clarke

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

Indian captain Rohit Sharma has been out of form in the ongoing IPL season, but Australia’s World Cup winning captain Michael Clarke believes that he will come good at next month’s T20 World Cup if he takes a break to rejuvenate himself.

Former Australian captain Michael Clarke has downplayed Indian skipper Rohit Sharma’s recent string of low scores in IPL 2024, suggesting that the Indian skipper might benefit from a break to recharge himself ahead of next month’s Men’s ICC T20 World Cup.

Despite Sharma’s struggles, Clarke acknowledged the toll of a demanding schedule and emphasised the importance of a much-needed rejuvination for the veteran batsman.

“Rohit Sharma is undoubtedly a key figure for both Mumbai Indians and the Indian cricket team. He’s been through a rigorous season, including a taxing Test series followed by IPL commitments,” Clarke remarked in an interview.

“Considering his workload, it’s natural for fatigue to set in. A brief hiatus could work wonders for him. As the Indian captain and pivotal player for Mumbai Indians, there’s hardly any respite. Rohit needs to rediscover his form, but finding time to rest becomes a challenge.”

Despite concerns about Rohit’s recent performances, Clarke remains optimistic about his imminent resurgence. “Rohit is a class act. He’s not struggling with his technique; it’s just a matter of getting dismissed. His demeanor suggests he’s in good spirits, which is encouraging,” Clarke remarked. “Given his talent, it’s only a matter of time before he bounces back. He thrives when he’s in rhythm, rather than forcing his shots.”

Turning attention to Rohit’s deputy and Mumbai Indians teammate, Hardik Pandya, Clarke lauds the all-rounder’s recent contributions with the bat and ball. “Hardik Pandya’s versatility is invaluable. His recent bowling performances have been commendable, instilling confidence in his overall game,” he said.

As the T20 World Cup looms, Clarke emphasised the significance of Pandya’s resurgence, stating, “Hardik’s return to form augurs well for Indian cricket. His ability to contribute in multiple facets will be crucial for India’s campaign in the upcoming tournament.”

India open their T20 World Cup campaign against Ireland on June 5 before taking on arch rivals Pakistan on June 9.

Decoding Rohit Sharma’s IPL performance: Check his statistics as a player and captain

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

As a batter, Rohit Sharma’s best season in the competition was in 2013, which was also the first time MI won the title. He had scored 538 runs in 19 games that year, averaging 38.42 with a strike rate of 131.54.

As Mumbai Indians (MI) opener Rohit Sharma encountered a familiar foe in Pat Cummins at the Wankhede Stadium on Monday (May 6), the India skipper got outdone and had to depart for the dressing room after adding only four runs to his tally.

Rohit’s batting form has seen a slump in the 2024 season of the Indian Premier League (IPL). Stripped off captaincy duties, it was expected that the 36-year-old would make a mark with the bat to prove his credentials ahead of the upcoming ICC T20 Men’s World Cup.

The 36-year-old started the season on a strong footing, aggregating 297 runs at an average of 49.5, striking at 164.1.

He was helping Mumbai maximise the powerplay overs, taking on bowlers right from the commencement of the innings, and demonstrating intent akin to the one he showed at the ODI World Cup.

However, his touch has taken a hit in the last five games, totalling only 33 runs. His average in this time period stands at a partly 6.6, whilst his strike rate had cut down to 94.3.

First 7 games – Runs: 297, Avg: 49.5, SR: 164.1

Next 5 games – Runs: 33, Avg: 6.6, SR: 94.3

Given that this is the first time in 11 years that Rohit is playing an IPL season, solely as a player, it presents a good opportunity to analyse his batting numbers both as a player as well as the captain in this competition.

Rohit Sharma’s record as as an IPL player

Out of his six IPL titles, Rohit has won only one of them without being the captain of the side, i.e. when Deccan Chargers (DC) lifted the championship under the watch of Adam Gilchrist in 2009. Rohit has featured in every single season of the IPL since 2008.

The player has scored 2305 runs in 90 matches from 2008-12 and in 2024, when he didn’t lead either DC or MI. His average in these seasons stand at 29.55, which is equal to his overall career average of 29.50. His strike rate in these matches are 135.19, which is in fact better than his career strike rate of 131.03 in the IPL. 33% (14) out of Rohit’s half-centuries (42) in the IPL have come as a player, and in fact both his tons in the competition have been when he was not leading the side, once in 2012 and the other one this year.

Rohit Sharma’s record as an IPL captain

Rohit led MI from 2013-23, and he led the team to five IPL titles in that time period, becoming the joint-most successful captain in the competition along with MS Dhoni (5 titles).

As the skipper, Rohit notched 4236 runs in 165 games, at an average of 28.62, which is lower than his overall IPL rate of 29.55. His strike rate in these campaigns was 130.45, more or less in similar lines as to the pace with which he has scored runs in his entire IPL career.

As a batter, Rohit’s best season in the competition was in 2013, which was also the first time MI won the title for the first time. He had scored 538 runs in 19 games that year, averaging 38.42 with a strike rate of 131.54, hitting 34 fours and 28 sixes to finish with four half-centuries.

With the T20 World Cup fast approaching, Rohit will want to get back into his best touch with the bat as he embarks on a journey to end India’s 11-year-long trophy drought of ICC championships in June this year.

IPL 2024: How Hardik Pandya performed at Gujarat Titans and what are his stats at Mumbai Indians?

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

Hardik Pandya has not achieved great success at Mumbai Indians in the ongoing season. Although his side still has a chance to enter the playoffs — provided they win all the remaining matches — in the league, it is interesting how he performed at Mumbai Indians and as captain at Gujarat Titans.

Mumbai Indians (MI) captain Hardik Pandya has faced a disappointing run in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 season so far. Having secured a high-profile trade from the Gujarat Titans (GT) ahead of the season, Pandya was expected to turn things around for the five-time champions who are without a title since 2020.

However, success has not followed him at an individual level nor for the team. MI sit at the penultimate spot in the standings with three wins in 10 matches so far. Mathematically, they can still make it to the playoffs by winning all of their games. However, their recent form doesn’t suggest that, and a lot of the blame for their performance can be pinned on Pandya.

Hardik Pandya at Gujarat Titans

Pandya was not retained by MI ahead of the IPL mega auctions in 2022. He got drafted by the then newly-founded GT, who named him their captain straightaway. Pandya led GT to the 2022 IPL finals, which was his first season with the team. They defeated Rajasthan Royals (RR) in the summit clash at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. Next year, they finished runners-up after being defeated by Chennai Super Kings (CSK) at the same venue, in a rain-curtailed summit clash.

Also read | KKR vs MI Preview, IPL 2024: Dismal Mumbai Indians seek revival at home against Kolkata Knight Riders

In both the campaigns, Pandya thrived as an all-rounder. He contributed decent runs with the bat, and was a force to reckon with the ball.

Cumulatively, Pandya scored 833 runs in 33 matches for the Titans. He averaged 33.32 with the bat, striking at 133.49, notching six half-centuries. Pandya scored 42 fours and 25 sixes, often playing the role of a top-order batter, as he got promoted to bat at either number three  or number  four.

With the ball, Pandya picked 11 wickets in the two seasons with GT. He took eight of them in 2022 and three in the following campaign. The all-rounder maintained an economy rate of 7.28 and 9.12 in 2022 and 2023, respectively. Pandya picked three wickets on his return giving away 17 runs in his four overs in the final against RR in IPL 2022. He was named the Player of the Match in the encounter.

Hardik Pandya at Mumbai Indians

Hardik has struggled to find his footing for MI (Image Source: iplt20.com)

Expectedly, most observers anticipated Pandya to carry forward his form from GT into MI. He had shown no signs of getting bogged down by the pressure of captaincy at GT, and had laid enough foundation for MI to be convinced that he could bring them back to winning ways after missing out on the title in the last three seasons. However, not only has his personal form taken a hit this season, in fact the entire MI unit has failed to fire cohesively and consistently.

Pandya has played 10 IPL matches in 2024, aggregating 197 runs for MI. His batting average is 21.89 and his strike rate has increased marginally to 150.38. He has smashed 16 fours and 10 sixes and remained not just once. His scoring rate has increased by 12.29% particularly because he is batting lower down the order as MI already have batters claiming stake at the top-three, unlike what was the case at GT.

With the ball, Pandya has picked only six wickets at a bowling average of 42.17. His economy rate has increased by nearly 34.14% to 11 runs per over as compared to the 8.2 he had recorded across his two years in GT formerly.

Also Read: From Virat’s strike rate to Rinku’s omission: 5 key talking points from World Cup squad announcement presser

Pandya has taken the onus of delivering the difficult overs, however, he has faced backlash for that. Case in point, his decision to take the new ball early on in the campaign was criticised as it appeared that Jasprit Bumrah could have been devastating at the start of the innings. Against CSK, Pandya chose to bowl the final over while MS Dhoni was batting at the Wankhede Stadium, but was hammered for three consecutive sixes by the former India captain who scored 20 runs off four deliveries, and CSK ended up winning the game by the same margin.

To summarise Pandya’s performance with MI in the 2024 season, few of his bets have yielded desired results. Whilst this is a worrying sign for MI, it’s a cause of concern for Team India, who view him as an important member of the team that will take the field for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in the United States and West Indies in June this year.

Rohit Sharma Birthday: Top 5 records held by the Indian cricket team captain

1: Joint-Most IPL Wins as the Captain: Rohit Sharma has led the Mumbai Indians (MI) to five championship victories in the Indian Premier League (IPL), i.e. in 2013, 2015, 2017, 2019, and 2020. He equals the record set by MS Dhoni for lifting the most IPL trophies as the captain of a franchise. (Image Source: iplt20.com)
2: Most Double Centuries in ODIs: Rohit Sharma has hit three double centuries in One Day Internationals (ODIs), twice against Sri Lanka and once against Afghanistan. It’s a remarkable record considering that besides the India captain, none of the other players have even breached the 200-run mark twice. (Image Source: BCCI)
3: Highest Individual Score in ODI Cricket: Rohit’s knock of 264 against Sri Lanka at the Eden Gardens in November 2014 is till date the highest individual score scaled by a batter in 50-overs international cricket. It was his second double ton in the ODI format, and two within the span of a year. (Image Source: Reuters)

4: Most Sixes in T20Is: Rohit has been a renowned power hitter and that shows with the fact that he is the player to have hit the most sixes in T20Is (190). He beats New Zealand batter Martin Guptill (173) to top this list and is set to add more to this tally when the MI player leads India in the T20 World Cup later in June. (Image Source: AP)
5: Most 100s in a Tournament: Rohit Sharma had an all-time great run in the ICC Men’s ODI World Cup that was held in England in 2019. He had slammed five centuries at an average and strike rate of 81 and 98.33 respectively, totalling 648 runs across nine matches for Team India. (Image Source: PTI)

Rohit Sharma becomes first Indian to hit 500 sixes in T20 cricket

Summary

In the 11th over of the second innings the 36-year-old created history by smashing Ravindra Jadeja for a maximum. Rohit then became the first Indian batter to reach this milestone.

Rohit Sharma created history during the high-volage IPL clash between Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indians at the Wankhede Stadium on Sunday. The former MI skipper smashed a ballistic 105 off 63 balls as the five-time champion chased the 207 target.

In the 11th over of the second innings the 36-year-old created history by smashing Ravindra Jadeja for a maximum. Rohit then became the first Indian batter to reach this milestone.

Rohit produced his only second IPL century and first since 2012, hitting 11 fours and five sixes during his 63-ball knock. But his magnificent effort did not get adequate support from the rest despite the pitch at the Wankhede Stadium remaining conducive for batting.

Defending champion CSK’s first away win this season also marked a fourth defeat for Mumbai Indians in six matches, keeping them at the eighth spot. CSK, on the other hand, rose to the third with eight points in their kitty.

In a game wherein the loudest cheers were reserved for Dhoni, Mumbai skipper Pandya continued to get booed intermittently. There were, though, a section of fans cheering him on at least once, like they did in the last game against Royal Challengers Bengaluru.

Unlike CSK, who got their majority of runs in the last 10 overs (136), Mumbai Indians remained in the hunt of in the initial part through Rohit’s sustained acceleration and some handy contributions from others. Once again, Rohit set the platform for Mumbai with a sturdy 70-run stand in seven overs with Ishan Kishan, who raced to 23 off 15 balls (3x4s, 1x6s).

With MI on charge, pacer Pathirana produced a two-wicket over after the powerplay accounting for Kishan and Suryakumar Yadav (0), getting him caught at third man with Mustafizur Rahman producing a juggling act at the ropes to complete the catch. Tilak Varma aided Rohit with a 20-ball 31 laced with five fours, adding 60 off 38 balls for the third wicket, but Pathirana’s return broke their stand. However, it was the Mumbai duo of Shardul Thakur and Tushar Deshpande that tilted the game in favour of CSK, producing two tight overs which broke the back of MI’s chase.

Pandya fell for just two but consumed six balls and Tim David hammered a couple of sixes but failed to capitalise. Amid all this, Rohit remained stuck at the other end watching the game slip away despite his best effort. Earlier. Dhoni’s ballistic 20 garnished forceful fifties by Shivam Dube and Ruturaj Gaikwad as Chennai Super Kings powered to a strong 206 for four. Dube (66 not out, 10×4, 2×6) and Gaikwad (69), who milked 90 runs off a mere 45 balls for the third wicket, gave Chennai innings steam in the initial and middle passages of the play before Dhoni mesmerized a packed Wankhede with vintage shot-making.

The former CSK skipper hammered three consecutive sixes off MI skipper Pandya (2/43) to help his side collect 26 runs off the final over. Dhoni’s stunning knock which had the balls sailing over long-off, wide long-on and deep square leg also pushed Chennai past the 200-run mark, which did appear tough until that final over.

Even though he could not push beyond 69, which came off 40 balls with five sixes and as many boundaries, Gaikwad appeared in prime form. The CSK skipper hit through the line effortlessly to clear ropes and when the MI bowlers challenged him by angling their deliveries into his body, Gaikwad improvised to find his runs without taking any unwanted risks.

CSK vs MI: Rohit Sharma scores second IPL century in the match against Chennai Super Kings

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

Rohit’s 105 off 63 balls went in vain as Mumbai Indians lost the match to CSK by 20 runs on Sunday.

Former Mumbai Indians skipper Rohit Sharma hit his second IPL century on Sunday against Chennai Super Kings. Rohit’s 105 off 63 balls went in vain as Mumbai Indians lost the match to CSK by 20 runs. However, MI fans got a glimpse of their former captain’s batting shots.

Rohit played the lone battle for the longest time as the other MI batters failed to hold their ground for too long and take their team to the winning side.

Sri Lankan pacer Matheesha Pathirana came up with his best IPL figures, grabbing four wickets as Chennai Super Kings defeated Mumbai Indians by 20 runs, despite a heroic unbeaten century by Rohit Sharma at the Wankhede Stadium here on Sunday. Pathirana took the wickets of Ishan Kishan (23), Surya Kumar Yadav (0), Tilak Varma (31) and Romario Shepherd (1) to return figures of 4 for 28 as MI lost the steam in the chase of an imposing 206/4, managing to score 186 for six.

Rohit batted from start to finish for his unbeaten 105 off 63 deliveries — his second IPL century — but he could not find a partner who could stay with him long enough and build a big partnership. Earlier, CSK top-order batter Shivam Dube and skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad struck stroke-filled half-centuries as the five-time champions scored 206/4.

Dube slammed an unbeaten 66 off 38 deliveries, while Gaikwad smashed a 40-ball 69, including five maximums, as the duo put up a 90-run stand after CSK had lost openers Ajinkya Rahul (5) and Rachin Ravindra (21) cheaply. Brief Scores: Chennai Super Kings: 206/4 in 20 overs (Rachin Ravindra 21, Ruturaj Gaikwad 69, Shivam Dube 66 not out, MS Dhoni 20 not out).

Watch: Hardik Pandya greets former Mumbai Indians captain Rohit Sharma ahead of IPL 2024

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

Ever since the big news, MI fans have gotten divided as a few support the former captain who won all the IPL cups and the one who seems to have the potential to carry the baton further in this limited-overs tournament.

Mumbai Indians skipper Hardik Pandya takes the first step to greet former captain Rohit Sharma at the practice session ahead of IPL 2024. This was the first time the two big players of IPL came face to face after the mega trade-off between Gujarat Titans and Mumbai Indians.

Ever since the big news, MI fans have gotten divided as a few support the former captain who won all the IPL cups and the one who seems to have the potential to carry the baton further in this limited-overs tournament.

Watch the video here:

As the new season is about to start on March 22, Mahendra Singh Dhoni on Thursday “handed” over the Chennai Super Kings captaincy to opener Ruturaj Gaikwad on the eve of the IPL opener here, a stunning decision that is bound to send speculation swirling on his playing future with the franchise.

In a post on X, the Indian Premier League made the announcement a day before CSK take on Royal Challengers Bangaluru. The five-time champions issued a brief statement soon after.

“MS Dhoni has handed over Chennai Super Kings’ captaincy to Ruturaj Gaikwad ahead of the start of TATA IPL 2024. Ruturaj has been an integral part of Chennai Super Kings since 2019 and has played 52 matches in IPL during this period. The team looks forward to the upcoming season,” said CSK.

There is speculation that Dhoni will retire at the end of the season and therefore the franchise felt the need for a smooth transition in the stalwart’s presence as a player.

Gaikwad, who has played six ODIs and 19 T20s for India, made his CSK debut in 2020 and has gone on to represent the team in 52 games.

“Whatever Dhoni does, it is in the best interest of the team. I got to know of the decision just before the captains’ meeting. You have to respect his decision, it is his call,” CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan told PTI.

Gaikwad, a stylish opener, had a memorable run last year, aggregating 590 runs in 16 games at an impressive strike rate of 147.50. His breakout year was 2021 when he amassed 635 runs in 16 games.

The 27-year-old from Maharashtra is not new to captaincy, having led the Indian team to the gold medal in the Asian Games last year. He has also led his state side Maharashtra.

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

Returning from a three-month injury layoff, Hardik acknowleged that Rohit is still India’s captain and praised whatever the team has achieved is under his belt.

Hardik Pandya reunited with his former franchise Mumbai Indians and held a press conference as the skipper of the team ahead of IPL season 2024. After having two successful years for Gujarat Titans, Pandya returned to Mumbai Indians after an all-cash deal trade deal in November 2023.

Pandya takes over the MI leadership duties which was originally led by Rohit Sharma, who won five titles making him Mumbai’s crowd favourite.

Returning from a three-month injury layoff, Hardik said Rohit is still India’s captain and praised whatever the team has achieved is under his belt.

“There won’t be any confusion. He is still the India captain. What this team has achieved was achieved under his belt. I am just carrying it forward. I have played all my cricket with MI with Rohit as captain, so I am sure he will always be around to help me out,” Hardik said in a media interaction on Monday.

The Mark Boucher-coached side begins its IPL campaign with the match against Gujarat Titans (GT) at the Narendra Modi Stadium on March 23.
