April 2018 series: What to expect?

With the eventful final series of FY17 now out of the way. What does the April series hold in store for us? Mangalam Maloo has a detailed analysis.

Last three April series – April 2015 series saw a cut of close to 2% but April 2016 and April 2017 have been good for markets. The market has seen gains of almost 1.5-2% in the last two April series.

The April moves mirrors the moves that we see in March so if March ended in the red, April ended in the red as well and this time March did end in the red close to 270 points.

April series becomes all the more important because the rollovers picked up over March series so we saw 69 percent of positions being rolled over.

Nifty likely to test 10,300-10,400 in April series, says Edelweiss Securities Chief

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

The markets brought cheer with the benchmark indices closing in the green on Tuesday. The BSE Sensex closed at 33,196 points and the NSE Nifty closed at 10,186 points.

The NSE Nifty is likely to head to the 10,300-10,400 range in the April series and it is possible for it to be a stock specific market, Edelweiss Securities Quantitative Research Head Yogesh Radke said.

The markets brought cheer with the benchmark indices closing in green on Tuesday. The BSE Sensex closed at 33,196 points and the NSE Nifty closed at 10,186 points.

All the sectoral indices though went off highs for a brief period, bounced back and gained up to 0.5%. The market had shown a positive trend for the second day in a row and closed at one-week highs.

Just as Monday’s session, banks and financials pulled up the indices. The Nifty Midcap Index posted its biggest one-day gain in a month and the Nifty Bank gained over 750 points in two sessions, the biggest two-day gains in five months.

In the last session, Calcutta Electric Supply Corporation (CESC) gained more than a percent, at Rs 970 per share.

Grasim & Bajaj FinServ are also likely to see some momentum today ahead of the Nifty inclusion.  The expert expects Adani Ports, Adani Enterprises, HPCL and BPCL to see some short covering.

The global markets, however, signal a weak opening for the Indian markets today. The Singaporean index, SGX Nifty, is trading at levels around 10,110 as against its Nifty March Future’s Tuesday close of 10,178, indicating a weak opening for the Indian markets today.

The US market went back into correction mode which led to its major indices fall over by 1.5%, where the country’s tech sector saw the biggest drop in six weeks.

The Asian markets reacted after the superpower country’s weak close and the effect of it seeped through the Asian equities this morning as Japan’s Nikkei shed close to 500 points and Korea’s composite index KOSPI was at day’s low.

Motilal Oswal Chief Raamdeo Agarwal says markets may fall 10% this year

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

He later added that even though there is a possibility for correction, individual stocks ‘will continue to do well.’

This will be a year of corrections and the market must be prepared for at least 10% fall as the  markets were overvalued, Motilal Oswal Financial Services Joint Managing Director Raamdeo Agarwal said.

Agarwal, however, said that “nothing has changed in the market” and though there is a possibility for correction, individual stocks will continue to do well.

In an interview with CNBCTV18, he said that markets were overvalued.

On the issue of public sector banks and Punjab National Bank fraud, he said, “We must give longer tenures to the current PSU bank chairmen.”
