Worli-Marine Drive coastal road to open for public in Mumbai on March 12 – See pics and other details

The south-bound corridor of the coastal road connecting Worli and Marine Drive, in south Mumbai will open for public transport on Tuesday, March 12. The Coastal Road Project (South) is an ambitious venture of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). Despite Mumbai’s extensive road network from south to north, traffic jams persist due to population growth and increasing number of vehicles.
To alleviate this issue, reduce travel time and fuel consumption, the BMC has initiated the Mumbai Coastal Road project, aiming to connect Dahisar-Virar to Nariman Point with ease. The first phase, the Mumbai Coastal Road Project (South), extends from Princes Street flyover to the Worli end of the Worli-Bandra Sea Link, with the route towards Marine Drive now accessible.
Travel time for the Worli-Marine Drive corridor is 8 am to 8 pm from Monday to Friday. The corridor will remain completely shut during weekends. The schedule will allow for ongoing project work to proceed smoothly while ensuring minimal inconvenience to commuters during peak hours.
The Mumbai Coastal Road project spans 10.58 km and costs nearly Rs 14,000 crore, including embankment roads, bridges, and elevated roads, with interchanges at Amersons, Haji Ali and Worli. (Image: Reuters)
The two-kilometer twin tunnels will facilitate traffic flow between South and North Mumbai, featuring six lanes and eight lanes respectively. They are equipped with advanced safety features that include sophisticated fireboards and a state-of-the-art saccardo ventilation system.
The boring work of 2 km-long twin tunnels between Priyadarshini Park and Marine Drive is fully complete, officials said. While the tunnels will have three lanes each, the remaining stretch of the road will have four lanes on each carriageway.
Mumbai police will issue a notification about the maximum permissible speed on the road soon, but initially vehicles would not be allowed to travel at high speed due to ongoing construction of the remaining portion. According to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation, over 75 percent of the work of the entire project is already complete.

Ship from China to Pakistan stopped at Mumbai Nhava Sheva Port over suspected Nuclear cargo

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

The customs officials, based on an intelligence input, halted a Malta-flagged merchant ship — CMA CGM Attila — at the port en route to Karachi on January 23 and inspected the consignment, which included a Computer Numerical Control (CNC) machine, originally manufactured by an Italian company.

A Karachi-bound ship from China was stopped by Indian security agencies at Mumbai’s Nhava Sheva Port on suspicion that it contained a dual-use consignment that could be used for Pakistan’s nuclear and ballistic missile programme, officials said on Saturday.

The customs officials, based on an intelligence input, halted a Malta-flagged merchant ship — CMA CGM Attila — at the port en route to Karachi on January 23 and inspected the consignment, which included a Computer Numerical Control (CNC) machine, originally manufactured by an Italian company.

CNC machines are controlled by a computer and produce a scale of efficiency, consistency and accuracy not possible manually.

A team from the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) also inspected the consignment and certified that it could be used by the neighbouring country for its nuclear programme.

According to the experts, the equipment would be useful in manufacturing critical parts for Pakistan’s missile development programme.

Since 1996, CNC machines have been included in the Wassenaar Arrangement — an international arms control regime aimed at stopping the proliferation of equipment with both civilian and military uses. India is among the 42 member countries that exchange information on transfers of conventional weapons and dual-use goods and technologies.

The CNC machine was used by North Korea in its nuclear programme.

The port officials, with specific intelligence, had alerted the Indian defence authorities who inspected the heavy cargo and reported their suspicions, after which the consignment was seized, the officials said, adding that the seizure falls under the prevention of possible proliferation by Pakistan and China.

According to documents such as bills of loading and other details of the consignment, the consigner was mentioned as ‘Shanghai JXE Global Logistics Co Ltd’ and the consignee was ‘Pakistan Wings Pvt Ltd’ of Sialkot.

However, a deeper investigation by the security agencies indicated that the consignment, weighing 22,180 kilogrammes, was shipped by Taiyuan Mining Import and Export Co Ltd and was meant for Cosmos Engineering in Pakistan, the officials said.

This is not the first instance when Indian port officials have seized such dual-use military-grade items being shipped from China to Pakistan.

Cosmos Engineering, a Pakistani defence supplier, has been on a watchlist since March 12, 2022, when Indian authorities intercepted a shipment of Italian-made thermoelectric instruments, once again at the Nhava Sheva port.

The officials said there have been concerns that Pakistan might be utilising China as a conduit to acquire restricted items from Europe and the US, masking identities to evade detection.

Concerns have intensified over Chinese support for Pakistan’s nuclear and missile programmes, exemplified by a 2020 case where an industrial autoclave, crucial for missile production, was concealed as industrial equipment on a Chinese vessel bound for Pakistan.

The ongoing investigation aims to determine if the suspected Pakistani entities receiving these dual-use items are supplying these to the Defence Science and Technology Organisation (DESTO), responsible for much of Pakistan’s defence research and development.

Despite assertions of commitment to international conventions by both Pakistan and China, the interception of such covert shipments underscores persistent cooperation in potential proliferation activities, contravening global agreements and regulations, the officials said.

In February 2020, China was supplying autoclaves to Pakistan under the cover of an “industrial dryer”.

The autoclave was seized from a Chinese ship — Dai Cui Yun — carried a Hong Kong flag and had left Jiangyin port on the Yangtze River in Jiangsu province of China, bound for Pakistan’s Port Qasim.

The seizure of the autoclave, possibly meant to be used in the missile programme of Pakistan, strengthens apprehensions that Pakistan is unabashedly indulging in the illegal trade of missiles and violating the Missile Technology Control Regime (MTCR).

In June 2023, the US Bureau of Industry and Security (BIS) sanctioned three Chinese companies — General Technology Limited (autoclave supplier to Pakistan), Beijing Luo Luo Technology Development, and Changzhou Utek Composite Company for its involvement in supplying missile-applicable items to Pakistan’s ballistic missile programme.

Summary

Apart from Mumbai, Ikea is also present in Hyderabad and Bengaluru with its big-format stores. It is also set to open stores in Delhi-NCR, including in Gurugram in various formats.

Ikea plans to consolidate its Mumbai operations at the Worli shop and discontinue operations at its RCity Mall at Ghatkopar by the middle of 2024. The global furniture retailer major cited viability issues with its small-format store.

Spread across 70,000 square feet, the Ikea store at RCity Mall was opened in 2022 and offers a limited selection of Ikea goods.

The Swedish furniture retailer has a big-format store in Navi Mumbai in addition to another small-format store at Worli.

“It further allows us to consolidate our Mumbai operations to IKEA Worli, IKEA Navi Mumbai and online presence while exploring newer opportunities for future growth. The focus on growing Mumbai remains robust as we explore newer omni-channel formats for the city, further develop the existing IKEA Navi Mumbai site into a retail destination, expand our physical presence in Pune.”

Apart from Mumbai, Ikea is also present in Hyderabad and Bengaluru with its big-format stores. It is also set to open stores in Delhi-NCR, including in Gurugram in various formats.

Ikea also added that it will ensure growth opportunities and a seamless transition for its employees at RCity Mall store.

“Taking care of our dedicated co-workers is our highest priority and we will lead with respect and compassion throughout the process. We are committed to supporting them with equal growth opportunities and a seamless transition and have them continue to be a part of the IKEA family.”

Coal Ministry to hold a roadshow in Mumbai on Feb 21 to promote coal gasification projects

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

The roadshow aims to nurture the growth and widespread adoption of coal or lignite gasification projects throughout India to leverage the available resources to propel sustainable energy initiatives.

The Union Coal Ministry is slated to conduct a roadshow in Mumbai on February 21 to promote coal or lignite gasification projects.

The event will feature key stakeholders, including policymakers, licensors, EPC agencies, PMC consultants, industry frontrunners, and investors, to discuss the opportunities and hurdles associated with coal or lignite gasification projects. This will be the government’s second industry interaction on the subject after the first roadshow was held in Hyderabad on February 16. The roadshow will be headed by Coal Secretary Amrit Lal Meena.

This move aims to nurture the growth and widespread adoption of coal or lignite gasification projects throughout India to leverage the available resources to propel sustainable energy initiatives.

India has already approved a scheme to promote coal or lignite gasification projects to meet the country’s future energy needs. As per the approved scheme, ₹8,500 crore of investment outlay will be provided by the Coal Ministry for coal gasification projects under three categories: government-owned PSUs, private players and small-scale projects.

Promotion of coal or lignite gasification projects aims to diversify energy sources, lessen reliance on imported fuels, and mitigate environmental impact through cleaner technologies. By forging strategic partnerships with industry players, the Coal Ministry is looking to expedite the adoption of gasification technologies and facilitate the creation of a robust ecosystem for coal or lignite-based energy solutions.
