HPCL launches home-delivery of diesel in Mumbai

Summary

‘HP Fuel Connect’ will “deliver diesel to select customers having fixed equipment, heavy machinery in their premises in surrounding areas of Uran, Raigad in Maharashtra,” a HPCL press statement said.

After IOC, state-owned Hindustan Petroleum Corp Ltd (HPCL) has launched home-delivery of diesel in Mumbai and has plans to expand it to other parts of the country.

‘HP Fuel Connect’ will “deliver diesel to select customers having fixed equipment, heavy machinery in their premises in surrounding areas of Uran, Raigad in Maharashtra,” a HPCL press statement said.

Indian Oil Corp (IOC) had in March launched home-delivery of diesel in Pune.

Like IOC, HPCL too has mounted a diesel dispenser, similar to the one seen at petrol pumps, on a midsized truck along with a storage tank for delivering the fuel at customers doorsteps in Pune.

Initially, the company is targeting ‘static customers’ like shopping malls and commercial establishments that use diesel in gensets for producing electricity, and transport companies with large diesel consumption.

“This facility will immensely help those customers who were hitherto taking diesel in barrels from petrol pumps,” the statement said. “The facility will help customers avoid time loss, additional costs, fuel losses and ensure hassle free safe delivery of diesel at their premises.”

Oil Minister Dharmendra Pradhan had in April last year stated that the government was looking at options to home deliver petrol and diesel to cut queues at fuel stations and give consumers an option.

But, for home delivery of fuel, a clearance from PESO is required as both petrol and diesel are highly inflammable fuels and require adequate safety precautions.

So far, PESO has given approval for doorstep delivery of diesel only on a trial basis.

India currently has 61,983 petrol pumps with state-owned firms operating 90 percent of them. The country consumed 194.6 million tonnes of fuel in 2016-17, nearly 40 per cent of which was diesel.

Diesel consumption in 2016-17 was 76 million tonnes, while petrol was 23.8 million tonnes.

Maintaining focus on Mumbai Development Plan going to be the biggest challenge, says expert

As Maharashtra government cleared Mumbai’s long-pending development plan, Gulam Zia, Executive Director of Knight Frank, spoke to CNBC-TV18, says hopefully it will be a balanced development plan but we will have to see whether we are on the target.

“We had a very notorious past where we have digressed from the target that were given to us like the affordable housing. Today, what we have is the swanky and top end residential development happening. So maintaining the focus is going to be the biggest challenge ,” he said.

He further said that a huge amount of benefits has to accrue to small-mid income housing.

Zia said, “I do not think the development plan has lost its relevance.”

Mumbai police may soon sport ‘Body Cameras’

Summary

With a view to track offences and violence against law-enforcers and traffic law violators, Mumbai police plans to provide hi-tech ‘Body Cameras’ to its field personnel soon

With a view to track offences and violence against law-enforcers and traffic law violators, Mumbai police plans to provide hi-tech ‘Body Cameras’ to its field personnel soon, official sources said here on Thursday.

The state Home Department has recently invited quotations from various companies for these sophisticated cameras which the police personnel can wear on duty.

“We hope to launch this on a trial basis first in Mumbai. If found successful, it may be extended to other major cities. We have invited tenders and quotations for this,” said a senior official, requesting anonymity.

The cameras shall be very light-weight, virtually invisible and appear to be part of the police uniform, easy to handle and grab high-quality images or record videos under all light conditions, besides having Wi-Fi, GPS and Bluetooth capabilities to quickly transmit data of various incidents to the Mumbai Police Control Room.

The moves were initiated last year after on-duty traffic policeman Vilas Shinde was brutally attacked by a juvenile and his brother, when asked to show their vehicle documents and drivince license near Bandra in August 2016.

Instead of showing the papers, the duo thrashed the 51-year old Shinde, who later succumbed to his injuries, creating a furore among traffic police personnel across the city.

“These body cameras are intended to detect and curb such incidents of attacks on police personnel, public emergencies, violence or traffic violations, besides helping their routine duties like road-blocks, law enforcement or critical and emergencies to act on it promptly,” the official said.

Since everything would be recorded live, it could also serve as evidence in future disputes involving police personnel vis-a-vis public and subsequently deter law-breakers.

Presently, certain categories of security enforcers at high-security zones like some airports, the Central Industrial Security Force and Indian Railways are using ‘Body Cameras’ for discharging their duties.

Incidentally, a few years ago, the state government had initiated the proposal on a trial basis but abandoned it after the ‘Body Cameras’ developed serious technical glitches.

Mumbai: Students staged ‘rail roko’ on Central Railway line, demand permanent jobs

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

Around 10:45 am, the students started moving out of the tracks following which the services resumed.

Mumbai’s central railway line came to a standstill on Tuesday morning when more than 500 students staged a ‘rail roko’ protest from 7 am to 11 am, demanding their rights to get a permanent job in the railways.

Railway’s security forces were at the spot, trying to control the crowd and even directed a lathicharge, resulting in a few students getting injured. Around 10:45 am, the service resumed after the students left the tracks.

Kirit Somaiya, a BJP member and Member of Parliament, has tweeted saying that the Railways Minister Piyush Goyal will personally look into the situation and assured a 20% quota and special exam for the students.

The protest had led to a temporary suspension of services between Kurla and Dadar.  Express trains using the track between Matunga and  CSMT (Chattrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus) had also been affected.

The protests did not affect the western line. Western Railways tweeted confirming that there were no disruptions in the WR services.
