Shubhman Gill vs Akash Madhwal — A world beater up against a rising star as GT take on MI in qualifier II

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

While the match will ooze of world class T20 talent, a certain match-up between GT opener Shubman Gill and MI pacer Akash Madhwal, is very likely to decide the fate of the match. Ahmedabad awaits for the battle between a world beater and and a rising star.

On Friday, the Indian Premier League’s most successful team will go toe-to toe against the league’s reigning champions for a place in the final of IPL 2023.

The Qualifier II of the season between Mumbai Indians and Gujarat Titans will have the crème de la crème of T20 talent. Suryakumar Yadav, Ishan Kishan, Cameron Green, Tilak Varma, Tim David on one side, and the likes of Hardik Pandya, Rashid Khan, David Miller, Rahul Tewatia on the other.

While the match will ooze of world class T20 talent, a certain match-up between GT opener Shubman Gill and MI pacer Akash Madhwal would very likely decide the fate of the match.

Here is a look at how the two players have fared so far in IPL 2023 and what makes the two such a vital linchpin for their respective teams.

Shubman Gill

Shubman Gill is enjoying a remarkable season. Baring a disaster against Mumbai Indians, Gill is sure to go past Faf du Plessis and claim the Orange Cap for this season. He has already accumulated 722 runs this season at an average of 55.54 and a strike rate of 149.17.

Should that happen it will further glorify Gill’s wonderful 2023. This year the 23-year-old has already hit a Test hundred, a T20I ton and a double-hundred in ODI.

The Gujarat Titans openers has already created two noteworthy records in this season. With his back-to-back hundreds he has joined Shikhar Dhawan, Jos Buttler and Virat Kohli, in an exclusive club of batters with tons in successive IPL games. Gill is also the youngest player and only the second Indian after Kohli in IPL history to score 700 runs in a season.

Gill is already Gujarat Titans’ main man. All his four half-centuries and two centuries have resulted in his team winning the match.

To further highlight Gill’s significance in the team, one has to analyze his performance in the team’s five losses this year. Gill’s return in GT’s five defeats this season are as follows:

39 vs Kolkata Knight Riders, 45 vs Rajasthan Royals, 6 vs Delhi Capitals, 6 vs Mumbai Indians and 42 vs Chennai Super Kings.

The message for the opposition camp is clear, get Gill early to amplify your chances of winning.

Akash Madhwal

While Gill is a certified superstar and for most the heir apparent of Virat Kohli’s legacy he will be facing a stiff competition from a relatively unknown man.

Akash Madhwal has taken the the league by storm in the last few matches. In just 7 matches this fast bowler from Roorkee has claimed 13 wickets at an average of 12.84. His economy is just 7.76 and has a strike rate of 9.92.

Although the sample size for Madhwal is small, but there are hints that Mumbai Indians’ performances is directly proportional to the number of wickets that the pacer takes.

The 29-year-old’s three best bowling performances this season — 3/31 vs Gujarat Titans, 4/37 vs Sunrisers Hyderabad and 5/5 vs Lucknow Super Giants  — have all resulted in Mumbai Indians’ victories. His sensational spell against LSG in the Eliminator took him straight to the fifth spot in the all-time list of the best bowling performances of the league.

Also Read: Akash Madhwal takes 5/5 vs LSG: Here are the 5 best bowling figures by Indian players in the IPL

Another indicator of how good Madhwal is the kind of batsmen he has dismissed and the manner in which we have picked up their wickets.

Gill, Devon Conway, Wriddhiman Saha, David Miller, Vivrant Sharma , Mayank Agarwal, Heinrich Klaasen, Harry Brook, Prerak Mankad, Ayush Badoni, Nicholas Pooran, Ravi Bishnoi and Mohsin Khan, have fallen victims to Madhwal’s bowling. Of these only Bishnoi and Khan are bowlers, the remaining 12 are proper batters. Of the 12 ‘proper batters’ , three — Gill, Klaasen and Brook– have scored centuries this season.  Eight of Madwal’s 13 wickets have either been LBW or clean bowled, indicating that the pacer likes to maintain tight lines and lengths.

Ahmedabad awaits for the battle between a world beater and and a rising star.

SKY, as Suryakumar is fondly known, reached his century, on the last delivery of the Mumbai Indians’ innings as he hit a ball by Alzarri Joseph for a six. As SKY raised his arms to celebrate his achievement, the Wankhede crowd stood on its feet to applaud the stunning innings.

SKY remained unbeaten on 103 in 49 deliveries and his innings was decorated with 11 fours and six sixes.

Finally, the score of 218/5 is now the highest total against Gujarat Titans. The previous best was 207/7 by Kolkata Knight Riders in a successful run chase best remembered for Rinku Singh’s five sixes in last five deliveries of the match.

IPL 2023 MI vs RCB preview: Mumbai and Bangalore clash to stay relevant in playoff race

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

Mumbai Indians and Royal Challengers Bangalore clash at the Wankhede Stadium on Tuesday for match 54 of IPL 2023. The two teams will have to win the match to stay in contention for a place in the playoff.

With the race for playoffs intensifying, captain Rohit Sharma’s form with the bat and bowling in the death overs will be a huge concern for hosts Mumbai Indians when they meet Royal Challengers Bangalore in a mid-table IPL clash here on Tuesday.

With 184 runs in 10 matches at a forgettable average of 18.39 and a solitary half-century, Sharma is enduring a second consecutive poor season with the bat.

For the sixth-placed Mumbai Indians to move up in the points table, it is imperative that their best batter in the line-up fires.

Sharma’s role in this IPL has been to provide brisk starts at the top, and at times he has had some success too, but consistency has deserted the right-arm batter whose early dismissal in huge chases has only added pressure on a relatively new batting line-up, which fortunately, from MI’s point of view, has delivered too.

Mumbai Indians’ head coach Mark Boucher admitted a few games ago that consistency could get compromised if any batter goes out of his way to look for runs, but for Sharma, one of the highest run-getters in the IPL, it is becoming a pattern.

In last year’s IPL, which also was MI’s poorest in terms of performance as they finished last, Sharma averaged a little over 19 while scoring 268 runs in 14 matches.

However, with Sharma not firing at the top, MI have had the likes of Ishan Kishan, Suryakumar Yadav and Cameron Green consolidating in the middle while Tilak Varma and Tim David have also found their groove as finishers late in the order.

MI tried taking pressure off Sharma by sending him at No. 3 in their last game against Chennai Super Kings, but it was a move that worked for none of the parties involved. Sharma endured his second consecutive duck and fourth single-digit score on the trot while an otherwise firing Green fell for six at the opening slot.

MI could only make a poor 139/8 in CSK’s homeground, losing an away game to their arch rivals for the first time in 13 years.

At the same time, Mumbai Indians will also be concerned about their death overs bowling, having conceded four consecutive totals in excess of 200 while bowling first, two of which were recorded on flat decks here at the Wankhede Stadium.

On the other hand, RCB will hope that their troika of Virat Kohli, Faf du Plessis and Glenn Maxwell fire at the top, since whenever they have done so collectively, the team has found itself mostly on the right side of the results.

Mahipal Lomror struck a quality 54 against Delhi Capitals but his knock was not enough as RCB suffered a shock defeat, which kept them at the fifth spot in the points table with five wins and as many defeats in 10 matches.

With 511 runs, Du Plessis is the only batter this season to have crossed the 500-run mark and RCB will hope that their skipper gets going with others in his tow to a big total if they bat first.

But it remains to be seen if RCB have more in their batting shelf apart from the big three, who have done the heavy lifting so far in the IPL. Dinesh Karthik has failed with the bat this season and RCB also do not have a big hitter in their lower-middle order either.

The inclusion of Josh Hazlewood has provided a shot in the arm to RCB’s bowling with Mohammed Siraj at the helm, having snaffled 15 wickets in 10 matches so far.

Teams (from): Mumbai Indians: Rohit Sharma (c), Jofra Archer, Arshad Khan, Jason Behrendorff, Dewald Brevis, Piyush Chawla, Tim David, Raghav Goyal, Cameron Green, Ishan Kishan (wk), Duan Jansen, Chris Jordan, Kumar Kartikeya, Akash Madhwal, Riley Meredith, Shams Mulani, Ramandeep Singh, Sandeep Warrier, Hrithik Shokeen, Tristan Stubbs, Arjun Tendulkar, Tilak Varma, Vishnu Vinod, Nehal Wadhera, Suryakumar Yadav.

Match starts at 7:30PM IST.

Why some of the Mumbai Indian players are joining the ‘The jumpsuit club’

Summary

Recently, Mumbai Indians posted a video on social media in which some of the MI players are seen wearing jumpsuits and captioned it with, “Lesson learnt – No one wants to be in The Jumpsuit Club.”

Mumbai Indians team management has come up with a new way to punish players for their lack of punctuality. Recently, Mumbai Indians posted a video on social media in which some of the MI players are seen wearing jumpsuits and captioned it with, “Lesson learnt – No one wants to be in The Jumpsuit Club.”

The first bunch of players who got punished by the franchise were Akash Madhwal, Nehal Vadhera and Cameron Green. In the video MI bowler Akash Madhwal is dressed up in a jumpsuit rather than a team jersey and he confirmed that he got late during the time of departure as he was sleeping at that time.

Watch the video here:

When they asked Nehal why he was in the jumpsuit he said, “Last time, I came in Slippers instead of Shoes.” Mumbai Indians star all-rounder Cameron Green was also one of the fellow members who broke the team rule, he was welcomed by his fellow teammate Nehal Wadhera and said, “Welcome to the Jumpsuit Club!”.

Chennai Super Kings broke a 13-year-old home jinx against Mumbai Indians with an easy six-wicket victory in an IPL match on Saturday. For MI, it was a bad loss as they stay in sixth place with 10 points from as many games and very little margin for error after this match.

But what will certainly both MI is their skipper’s prolonged lean patch as 184 runs from 10 games with five scores of less than 10 and only two scores above 40 will set some panic in the ranks.

Not to forget, coming down the batting order at No. 3 didn’t work as an indiscreet lap-scoop off Deepak Chahar didn’t work at all for the skipper. But no amount of praise will be enough for Pathirana, who literally bottled the MI batters during the death overs as he didn’t concede a single boundary in his four-over spell.

In the MI innings, a maiden half-century in IPL by left-handed batter Nehal Wadhera (64, 51 balls, 8×4, 1×6) and his half-century partnerships with Suryakumar Yadav (26) and Tristan Stubbs (20) helped salvage things for MI, which lost three wickets by the third over and reach 139 for 8.

IPL 2023: Jofra Archer denies rumours of leaving MI camp for elbow surgery in Belgium

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

Jofra Archer had gone to Belgium for a minor surgery on his ailing elbow after Mumbai Indians’ (MI) season opener agianst the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) on April 2nd.

English pacer Jofra Archer has denied a report claiming that he left the Mumbai Indians (MI) camp briefly earlier this month to visit an elbow specialist in Belgium to undergo a minor surgical procedure. As reported by ESPN Cricinfo, Archer had a process done on the same troublesome elbow that kept him out of cricketing action for the better part of the last two years.

This resulted in the speedster missing out of the MI playing XI for four games from April 8th-April 18th before featuring in the match against the Punjab Kings (PBKS) at the Wankhede Stadium last Saturday. Archer was part of the XI that turned up against the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) for Mumbai’s season opener at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium on April 2 but he conspicuously missed all the games for the following 20 days.

However, Archer lashed out at the suggestions of him going to Belgium in a Twitter post on Wednesday afternoon. Though he did not attach the article explicitly, the 28-year-old wrote, “Putting out an article without knowing the facts & without my consent is crazy. Who ever the reporter is shame on you , an already worrying and troubling time for a player and you exploit it for your personal gain, it’s people like you that are the problem .”

Concerning his absence after the game against RCB, head coach Mark Boucher earlier remarked that he had a niggle but gradually rumours began surfacing of Archer having returned back to England. Cricket commentator and former New Zealand player affirmed the same during one of his appearances on Cricbuzz Live.

As per the  aforementioned report, the English Cricket Board (ECB) is hoping for him to be fit enough to play some part in the Ashes scheduled to be held from June 16 onwards. Archer has not featured in a first-class game for nearly two years now. Hence, he is unlikely to play a prominent role throughout the five-match series but could possibly come in handy in a game or two as the Ashes progresses.

Meanwhile, the pacer looked in fairly good touch when he turned up against PBKS last weekend. Though he conceded 42 runs and picked just one wicket, Archer was clocking his usual pace above 145 kmph. He didn’t play in Mumbai’s away encounter against the Gujarat Titans (GT) on Tuesday but is likely to come back into the playing XI to face the Rajasthan Royals (RR) at the Wankhede on Sunday.
