After Mumbai hoarding incident that killed 16, another one collapses in Pune

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

No casualties have been reported, according to officials from the Pimpri Chinchwad Police.

Another tragic incident unfolded in Maharashtra as a massive hoarding collapsed in the Pimpri-Chinchwad area of Pune on Thursday, May 16, following in the wake of a similar calamity in Mumbai’s Ghatkopar on May 14. No casualties have been reported, according to officials from the Pimpri Chinchwad Police.

This event comes after the catastrophic incident in Mumbai’s Chheda Nagar, Ghatkopar, where a towering hoarding measuring 120×120 feet collapsed on Monday, May 13. The rescue operation for this tragedy was officially concluded at 10:30 am on Thursday, as confirmed by the NDRF.

BMC Commissioner Bhushan Gagrani made the announcement following an inspection of the site. The operation spanned 66 hours following the collapse of the massive hoarding onto a petrol pump in the Chheda Nagar area amid gusty winds on Monday evening.

Tragically, in the Ghatkopar incident, the bodies of a retired general manager of Air Traffic Control (ATC) and his wife were discovered in a car crushed beneath the wreckage, bringing the death toll to 16. Additionally, 75 individuals sustained injuries in the accident.

The rescue effort in Ghatkopar was marked by the painstaking process of cutting five interconnected girders of the collapsed hoarding to extricate the couple’s bodies.

Bombay HC pulls up Maharashtra govt for inaction against illegal hoardings and banners

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

A division bench of Chief Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya and Justice Arif S Doctor was hearing pleas claiming non-compliance with its 2017 orders to pull down illegal hoardings.

The Bombay High Court on Tuesday, May 14, came down heavily on the Maharashtra government for inaction against illegal hoardings and banners. The court said the residents of Mumbai want the removal of hoardings that deface the city and create obstacles.

A division bench of Chief Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya and Justice Arif S Doctor was hearing pleas claiming non-compliance with its 2017 orders to pull down illegal hoardings, the Indian Express reported.

Bombay HC in its order stated that no individual, group of individuals, group of individuals, a political party, a commercial organisation or any religious denomination can legally be allowed to use the public places including footpaths, street lights and roads for their personal gains and advertisements. It reasoned that this is while keeping in view the harm such hoardings and banners cause to the pedestrians and other users of the road.

The hearing came a day after the collapse of a hoarding in Ghatkopar area that led to the death of 14 people and injured over 30 others. An FIR has been registered in the case.

The bench of judges appealed to the general public and individuals to not indulge in any activities which encourage such illegalities.

According to BMC affidavit submitted in the Bombay HC, in 2023, information regarding 10,839 political banners, 4,551 commercial banners, and 32,481 religious banners was sent to police stations through 410 letters, and 22 FIRs were registered.

The BMC had earlier said that it issued a notice to M/s Ego Media Private Limited for installing the hoarding, and the police have registered a case against the company’s owner, Bhavesh Bhinde, and others for culpable homicide not amounting to murder.

A 100-foot tall billboard fell on a petrol pump in Ghatkopar area on Monday evening. The billboard, which was illegal according to civic officials, uprooted and fell on a petrol pump at the Cheddanagar Junction in Ghatkopar.

Mumbai Municipal Corporation commissioner Bhushan Gagrani said the hoarding was illegal as the BMC had not given permission (for erecting it). “It was an illegal hoarding. The location where the incident occurred has four hoardings set up on the railway land and one of them has collapsed.

According to BMC officials, the hoarding measuring 120 x 120 feet crashed on the petrol pump at around 4:30 pm. An official said the civic body doesn’t permit any hoarding measuring above 40 x 40 feet.

Timeline of Bombay HC’s orders on illegal hoardings

Suswarajya Foundation, a Satara-based organisation, filed a petition in 2011, following which the Bombay High Court issued a detailed order in 2017, with directives for the state government to tackle the illegal hoarding menace.

Upon realising that court’s order was not being adhered to, the court initiated a contempt hearing in 2018. In all those years, Bombay HC has rebuked state government, municipal bodies and other agencies, but to no resolve.

In December 2023, Bombay HC pulled up the state government once again for not following court order and removing illegal hoardings.

Earlier this year in February 2024, the issue of political hoardings was raised again as court mentioned that people cannot be allowed to create a safety hazard for people. After seeing absence of representatives of any political party in the court, it asked them to remain present in the next hearing.

Maharashtra new COVID-19 scare: 91 cases of new subvariant found

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

Maharashtra first identified cases of this subvariant as early as January. By March and April, it had become the dominant strain in the region.

Maharashtra authorities have reportedly identified 91 cases of the new COVID-19 Omicron subvariant KP.2. This variant, surpassing the previously circulating JN.1 variant, has emerged as a primary driver of cases in various nations worldwide.

According to the Times of India, Pune has reported 51 cases of the KP.2 variant, followed by Thane with 20 reported cases. The emergence of KP.2, globally detected in January, has significantly altered the landscape of COVID-19 transmission. Alarmingly, it is now confirmed to be the predominant variant in the United States.

Maharashtra also first identified cases of this subvariant as early as January. By March and April, it had become the dominant strain in the region.

The lineage of KP.2 can be traced back to its predecessor, JN.1, which held prominence as the predominant COVID strain by the end of 2023. The surge in cases witnessed in March, averaging around 250 detections, is attributed to the rapid spread of the KP.2 variant across the state.

Apart from Pune and Thane, additional cases of the KP.2 variant have been identified in various districts. Seven cases each were reported in Amravati and Aurangabad, while Solapur recorded two cases.

Furthermore, isolated instances of the KP.2 variant were reported in Ahmednagar, Nashik, Latur, and Sangli. Notably, no cases have been reported from Mumbai, underscoring the uneven distribution of this emergent strain across Maharashtra.

Lok Sabha Elections 2024: Jalna, along with other constituencies in Maharashtra, will go to polls on May 13, the fourth phase of the general elections. The Jalna seat will see a face-off between BJP’s Raosaheb Dadarao Danve and Kalyan Kale of Congress.

Several dozens of voter identity cards were discovered in a garbage dump in Maharastra’s Jalna on Friday (May 10), news agency ANI reported. The cards were spotted and recovered by the municipal cleaners in the area. This comes just days before the Jalna Lok Sabha seat goes to the polls on May 13 — the fourth phase of the general elections 2024.

A video shared by ANI on X shows municipal workers looking for the disposed voter identity cards. The search was carried out in the presence of election authorities and the Jalna district administration. The authorities found a few dozen voter cards dumped in the area.

The voter cards were reportedly handed over to the police and the officers immediately issued directives to register a FIR against the unidentified suspects. The cards were taken into possession by the sub-divisional officer of Jalna.

Currently, the investigation is underway and the police have assured of strict action against anyone involved in the illegal dumping of voter cards ahead of the polls. Under the investigation, the names mentioned on the voter identity cards will be verified by the booth level officer.

Meanwhile, Maharashtra is gearing up for phase four of the general elections. With only a few days left, voters are set to exercise their democratic right to choose the representatives for the Lok Sabha. Jalna, along with Nandurbar, Jalgaon, Raver, Aurangabad, Maval, Pune, Shirur, Ahmednagar, Shirdi, and Beed will go to polls on May 13.

The upcoming phase of the Lok Sabha election in Maharashtra is poised for intense electoral contests. The Jalna seat will see a face-off between BJP’s Raosaheb Dadarao Danve and Kalyan Kale of Congress.

Baramati Lok Sabha election: It’s daughter vs daughter-in-law, 48% voting registered

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

The Baramati Lok Sabha seat comprises six Assembly segments, of which two each went to the BJP, Congress and the undivided NCP in the 2019 state Assembly elections.

Baramati, one of the 48 parliamentary constituencies in Maharashtra, has remained a stronghold of the Pawar family over the past few decades. However, it is witnessing an unprecedented contest in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections as veteran leader Sharad Pawar’s daughter Supriya Sule is facing a direct challenge from her cousin and Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar’s wife Sunetra Pawar. The seat registered 47.84% voting as approximate trends were released by the Election Commission.

Baramati in Pune district is the only seat in the state which is witnessing a direct contest between two women candidates.

The NCP, led by Ajit Pawar, has fielded Sunetra Pawar, who is backed by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Shiv Sena (Eknath Shinde faction). In 2023, Ajit Pawar joined the ruling Mahayuti alliance and took oath as a deputy chief minister after breaking the NCP, which was formed by his uncle Sharad Pawar.

Despite being relatively new to the political arena, Sunetra is expected to take advantage of Ajit Pawar’s formidable influence in the Baramati region.

On the other hand, Sule forayed into politics in 2006 as a member of the Rajya Sabha. In 2009, she defeated BJP candidate Kanta Nalawade by over 3.36 lakh votes to secure her maiden victory from Baramati in the general elections. Later, she went on to register a win in 2014 and 2019 polls as well. Before her, this seat was represented by her father since 1996.

The Baramati Lok Sabha seat comprises six Assembly segments, out of which two each went to the BJP, Congress and the undivided NCP in the 2019 state Assembly elections. Ajit Pawar was one of the two NCP candidates to have secured a win from this region.

Voting date

Polling for the 2024 general elections in Maharashtra, which has the second-most parliamentary constituencies (48) after Uttar Pradesh (80), is being conducted in five phases. In the third phase, voting will be held in 11 seats in the state, including Baramati, on May 7.

During the 2019 polls, Baramati registered a total voter turnout of 61.82%.

List of candidates

A total of 38 candidates are in the fray for the Baramati seat in the 2024 Lok Sabha polls. However, the major contest here is between sitting MP Supriya Sule and Sunetra Pawar. Here’s a list of some of the prominent candidates:

Maratha quota agitation, railway delays, and community reservation dominate Beed Lok Sabha polls

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

The central Maharashtra district was in the news last year when an intense agitation for quotas for Marathas in jobs and education took a violent turn and the houses of some political leaders came under attack.

Police cases against Maratha quota agitators, slow progress of the Beed-Ahmednagar railway line, and reservation for the Dhangar community are the dominant issues in Maharashtra’s Beed Lok Sabha constituency that goes to polls on May 13.

The central Maharashtra district was in the news last year when an intense agitation for quotas for Marathas in jobs and education took a violent turn and the houses of some political leaders came under attack.

The BJP has fielded former state minister Pankaja Munde from the seat, making her the third member of the Munde family to contest from here in the last 15 years.

Her father and BJP stalwart Gopinath Munde won the seat in 2009 and 2014 while her younger sister Pritam Munde won the by-election in October 2014 after their father’s death and retained the seat in the 2019 polls. But this time, the BJP replaced Pritam Munde with Pankaja Munde whose main rival is Bajrang Sonawane of the NCP (Sharad Pawar).

“The Maratha quota agitation and nearly 200 offences registered during the period are a big issue in this election. Another issue is why Pritam Munde was replaced when she had won twice from the seat with good margins,” said senior journalist Datta Deshmukh. He said the lack of industry and jobs and the Dhangar community’s demand for reservation too are important issues.

The Dhangar community in the state has been demanding Scheduled Tribe status. Chief Minister Eknath Shinde had last year said that his government will study the methodology adopted by states like Bihar, Jharkhand, Telangana and Chhattisgarh on the Dhangar community’s demands for reservation.

“Pankaja Munde has a strong team down to the booth level as she also has her cousin (state agriculture minister) Dhananjay Munde on her side. But she is facing a disgruntled Maratha community with its pending demand of reservation,” he said.

In February, the ruling Mahayuti alliance of Chief Minister Shinde-led Shiv Sena, the BJP and the Ajit Pawar-led NCP passed a bill providing 10% reservation for the Maratha community in education and government jobs.

The Bombay High Court has been hearing a bunch of petitions challenging the Maharashtra government’s decision even as Maratha quota activist Manoj Jarange has demanded that the community be given quota in the OBC category by identifying them as Kunbis — an agrarian community falling in the OBC category — instead of a separate reservation.

Jarange on April 14 said he would undertake a fast from June 5, a day after Lok Sabha results are announced, if the Maharashtra government fails to give the community reservation benefits. He also hit out at the state government, saying police continue to register cases against Maratha quota agitators across the state even for incidents that took place four months ago.

Balaji Margude, another journalist, said caste equations also matter in the constituency. Even school-going children talk about caste here, he said, adding that issues of development are rarely discussed. Because of the Maratha quota agitation, the caste factor is in greater focus, he said.

Talking about the prospects of Sonawane, Deshmukh said no big leader is campaigning for him, yet he might benefit from the sympathy wave for Sharad Pawar and Uddhav Thackeray, who have lost control of their parties — Shiv Sena and Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) — along with the original name and electoral symbol. “Sonawane has no big leader behind him except Sandip Kshirsagar, but sympathy for Sharad Pawar and Uddhav Thackeray can help him,” Deshmukh added.

Meanwhile, some local residents rued the delay in the completion of the Beed-Ahmednagar railway line. Beed consists of six assembly segments: Georai, Majalgaon, Beed, Ashti, Kaij and Parli. Parli is the hometown of the Munde family.

Pankaja Munde had lost from Parli to her cousin Dhanajay Munde in the 2019 state elections. But with the NCP splitting up and Dhananjay throwing his lot with the Ajit Pawar faction which joined hands with the BJP, the cousins are now on the same side. Also, five of the six MLAs in the Lok Sabha constituency are of the BJP or its allies. The opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi alliance does not have any big leader in the district except Beed City MLA Sandeep Kshirsagar of the Sharad Pawar-led NCP.

There are a total of 41 candidates in the fray including Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi’s (VBA) Ashok Hinge. The VBA, led by Dalit leader and B R Ambedkar’s grandson Prakash Ambedkar, then in alliance with the AIMIM, had secured a sizable 92,139 votes in Beed in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.

There are 21, 42, 547 registered voters — 11,34,284 male, 10,08,234 female and 29 third gender — in the constituency. The Lok Sabha elections in Maharashtra are being held in five phases from April 19 to May 20 and state assembly polls are due later this year.
