No 1. Virat Kohli’s temper tantrums | Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s star batsman Virat Kohli lost his temper on the on-field umpires during his team’s match against Kolkata Knight Riders at Eden Gardens. Kohli was upset with a decision that ruled him out off a full toss delivery by KKR fast bowler Harshit Rana. Kohli hit the ball and Rana completed the catch off his own bowling. Kohli believed that the ball was waist-high, hence should be declared a no-ball. But the TV Umpire adjudged it as a legitimate delivery. Before making his wasy back to the dressing room, Kohli had a run-in with the on-field umpires, which eventually led to a fine of 50% of his match fees. (Image: AP)
Like Virat Kohli, Sanju Samson was also declared out in controversial circumstances during Rajasthan Royal's match against Delhi Capitals at the Arun Jaitley Stadium.
No 2. Sanju Samson tried and failed | Like Virat Kohli, Sanju Samson too also declared out under controversial circumstances during Rajasthan Royal’s match against Delhi Capitals at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi. The moment arrived when Delhi Capitals’ Shai Hope completed a catch just at the boundary that ended Samson’s knock. However, as Hope completed the catch his foot seemed to have touched the boundary rope thereby saving Samson. The third umpire ruled Samson out, but the RR skipper was not happy. He initially started walking towards the pavilion, only to return to the middle and have some words with the on-field umpires. After the match, Samson was fined 30% of his match fees. (Image: IPL)
Controversy erupted between Virat Kohli and former India captain turned commentator Sunil Gavaskar that involved IPL broadcasters Star Sports.
No 3. Sledging on camera | Controversy erupted between Virat Kohli and former India captain turned commentator Sunil Gavaskar that involved Star Sports. First Kohli lashed out at the “people” criticising him for his slow strike rate. “I think all the people who talk about strike rates and me not playing spin well are the ones who love talking about this stuff. But, for me, it’s about winning the game for the team. And there is a reason you have done this for 15 years,” Kohli said after RCB’s win over GT.  To which Gavaskar replied,  “All these guys talk about, ‘oh we don’t care about outside noise’. Then why are you replying to any outside noise or whatever it is. We all played a bit of cricket, not a lot of cricket. We don’t have agendas,” said Gavaskar.

Goenka’s animated chat purportedly reprimanding Rahul after Lucknow Super Giants’ record demolition at the hands of Sunrisers Hyderabad went viral and netizens came out in huge numbers in support of the Indian player.

India star pacer Mohammed Shami called out businessman and Lucknow Super Giants team owner Sanjiv Goenka’s behaviour towards team captain KL Rahul. Goenka’s animated chat purportedly reprimanding Rahul after Lucknow Super Giants’ record demolition at the hands of Sunrisers Hyderabad on May 9 went viral and netizens came out in huge numbers in support of the LSG captain.

Rahul was part of India’s playing XI in the ICC ODI World Cup and his form was celebrated as he came out of a six- month thigh injury. Shami was the first Indian cricketer to criticise the act on a LIVE chat. “Crores of people are watching you and learning from you. If these things happen in front of cameras, and you see such reactions on screen, it’s shameful. It would help if you had boundaries, there’s a way to talk. This sends a very wrong message”, he said.

This sends a very wrong message).” SRH openers Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma chased down the target of 166 in less than 10 overs, which also became the record 10-over score in any T20 match. But what became the talking point post that match was, Goenka losing his cool on Rahul.

“He’s the captain, not a normal player. It’s a team game; it isn’t a big thing if the plan isn’t successful. Anything is possible in the game. I understand there can be good or bad days, but every player has respect, and there’s a way to talk,” he said. “There are a lot of moments in the game when tempers flare up, and players quarrel with each other. It should not happen in cricket or any sport, but it does happen.

“A player talking to another player is different, but someone from the outside discussing something with the player is different. We are only speculating from what we are seeing, and only KL Rahul can tell what the conversation was about, but these kinds of reactions do not have any place in sports”, Shami added.

As per a PTI report, it is a foregone conclusion that the LSG skipper. However, there is speculation that the skipper might step down and concentrate on batting in the next two games.

“There is a five-day gap before the next game against DC [Delhi Capitals]. As of now, no decision has been taken but it is understood that if Rahul plans to concentrate on his batting for the remaining two games, the management won’t mind,” PTI quoted a source as saying.

Ahead of IPL playoffs KL Rahul’s future as LSG skipper looks uncertain: Reports

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

There is speculation that Lucknow Super Giants skipper KL Rahul might step down on his and concentrate on batting during the next two games in the ongoing IPL season.

KL Rahul’s future as LSG skipper looks uncertain as the 32-year-old has been being at the receiving end of the 10-wicket losst to Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) on Wednesday. As per a PTI report, it is a foregone conclusion that the LSG skipper, who was roped in before the auction in 2022 for a record Rs 17 crore, is unlikely to be retained before the mega auctions in 2025.

However, there is speculation that the skipper might step down on his own and concentrate on batting in the next two games. “There is a five-day gap before the next game against DC [Delhi Capitals]. As of now, no decision has been taken but it is understood that if Rahul plans to just concentrate on his batting for the remaining two games, the management won’t mind,” a source told PTI.

Lucknow Super Giants skipper KL Rahul on Wednesday said they were completely outplayed by the incredible power-hitting of Sunrisers Hyderabad’s openers Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma, terming it “unreal batting.” Head and Sharma added another chapter to their remorseless domination over bowlers, while carving unbeaten fifties to power SRH to a convincing 10-wicket win over LSG in a crucial IPL match.

Chasing a modest 166, Head (89 not out, 30 balls, 8x4s, 8x6s) and Sharma (75 not out, 28 balls, 8x4s, 6x6s) toyed with LSG bowlers, finding boundaries and sixes at will to saunter home in 9.4 overs.

“I am at lost for words. We have watched that kind of batting on TV. But this is unreal batting. Everything seemed to find the middle of the bat. Kudos to their skills. They have worked hard on their six-hitting skills. “They didn’t give us a chance to know what the pitch played in the second innings. It was hard to stop them as they teed off from ball one,” Rahul said in a post match presentation.

KL Rahul tops with most dismissals by an Indian wicketkeeper in single edition of ODI World Cup

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

Though the match didn’t favour the men in blue, KL Rahul’s 17 dismissals from being the wicket made him top the chart of most dismissals by an Indian wicket-keeper in a single edition of the World Cup.

India’s thundering juggernaut came to a screeching halt in an anti-climactic finish as Australia denied a golden generation of Indian cricketers the silverware it so desperately craved by lifting an unprecedented sixth World Cup trophy.

The Australians once again showed what meticulous planning and ruthless execution is all about, chasing 241 in just 43 overs with Travis Head (137 off 120 balls) once again proving to be India’s nemesis.

KL Rahul gave a tough fight in the final with 66 runs and tried to build some of the key partnerships with Virat Kohli and Suryakumar Yadav. Though the match didn’t favour the Men in Blue, KL Rahul’s 17 dismissals from being the wicket made him top the chart of most dismissals by an Indian wicket-keeper in a single edition of the World Cup.

Many broken pieces of shattered hearts lay all around the gigantic Narendra Modi stadium, which was expected to become the new ‘Theatre of Dreams’ for a buoyant Indian cricket team.

Skipper Rohit Sharma, a once-in-a-generation talent, Ravindra Jadeja, an all-rounder par excellence and an artist called Mohammed Shami possibly lost their last but arguably best shot at winning a 50-over World Cup.

Rahul Dravid, who has invested two years in building a crack ODI unit might have to remain content without that elusive silverware in his cabinet. Motera was drowned in ‘Ocean of Blue’ in anticipation of the World Cup trophy but the 10 emphatic wins on the trot ended in nothingness as India saved their worst for the last scoring a below-par 240 in 50 overs.

KL Rahul recalls difficult memories upon returning to Lucknow’s Ekana stadium for England clash

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

KL Rahul was back to a the Ekana stadium that has given him life lessons & bittersweet memories. On Sunday, he wants to make memories that he’ll remember only for the good as India takes on England in the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023.

Indian team touched down base in Lucknow to play their next big game of ICC World Cup 2023 against the defending champions England. The Ekana Stadium is the home ground of KL Rahul when he plays for his IPL team Lucknow Super Giants as a skipper, talked about how that ground has taught him some life lessons & bittersweet memories.

The last match that he played at the Lucknow stadium was when he met with a major thigh injury and was ruled out of the tournament, as well as had to go under the knife. The recovery was something that everyone talked about as the Indian Team and management had roughly seven months to finalise the ICC World Cup squad and it was difficult to find a replacement for Rahul’s position at no. 4.

“I entered the ground today and I had to do some running,” Rahul told BCCI.tv after India’s training session on Friday afternoon. “I told my trainer, Rajinikanth Sivagnanam sir that my heart was racing, because the last time I was here, I had not such a great experience, or not such a great moment in my career. It was a bit bittersweet.

Watch the video here:

“That injury had, obviously, a huge impact on me and my career. It wasn’t such a happy moment for me and my family. I’ve been through many injuries now in the little time that I’ve played for India. It’s not a great feeling for any athlete to keep getting injured so often and to go under the knife and to get surgeries is very, firstly, edifying – and, secondly, very painful.”

“But I started seeing the best in what happened much later when I was in Bangalore, and realised that it came at a time when I really needed that break away from the game, because there was a lot going on with me mentally – and, for the first time in my career, I felt like I had no answers.”

On Sunday, he wants to make memories that he’ll remember only for good as India takes on England in the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023. “Obviously, I’m very happy to be back here in Lucknow and to change those memories and to make some new ones and some happy ones,” he said. “Obviously we play a very strong England team – they’re the champion team, the defending champions – so, looking forward to Sunday.”

View: Those who doubted KL Rahul missed an important stat

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

The public perception is that KL Rahul hasn’t performed in big games. But for me he has always been the first pick in the ODI middle order. I hope this knock puts all doubts to rest once and for all. For all the trolling he receives on social media he has brought out his now infamous celebration of shutting out his ears — to say he wants to keep the naysayers away. And of course he has let the bat do the talking.

“I had just taken a shower and was hoping to put my feet up for half an hour after the fielding innings, but I had to come in,” said K.L. Rahul after the game. This reminded me of a scene from the 83 biopic, where Ranveer Singh/Kapil Dev was called into bat after India lost early wickets. It was one of the greatest World Cup knocks ever — 175 not out against Zimbabwe. The movie gave us the closest glimpse of the epic innings as the match wasn’t televised.

However, it wasn’t the joy of the 1983 World Cup, but rather the nightmare of the 2019 World Cup semi-final which would have replayed in every Indian fan’s mind when India started their chase versus Australia on Sunday (October 8).

Two runs for three wickets was, in fact, worse. The eerie silence in Chepauk was finally broken by the two saviours — Virat Kohli and K.L. Rahul.

Let’s spare a thought for K.L. Rahul. He wasn’t named in the original playing 11 against Pakistan in the Asia Cup and, 15 minutes before the toss, Shreyas Iyer pulled up with a back injury. 111 n.o. was the result!

He hung on to his place and how! It should never have been the case in the first place  because he has been India’s best middle order batter for a while now. Since 2020, he has batted at No. 4 or lower on 27 occasions and has scored 1,326 runs, with three 100s and ten 50s at an impressive average of 66.30.

That’s a 50 plus score in every two innings. He has remained not out as well on seven occasions. In fact, he holds the highest average among any batter who has scored more than 1,000 runs at this time. Only six batters have scored more runs than him in this period and they have either played more games or enjoyed playing against lesser-ranked teams.

For me he was always the first pick in the ODI middle order. However, a spate of injuries and a late recovery put his place under threat for the World Cup 11 — which shouldn’t have been a point of contention to begin with.

There is a tendency in recent times for people to mix formats — but for me K.L. Rahul has been one of our best batters and is a pivotal cog for India’s chances at this World Cup.

Public perception is that he hasn’t performed in big games. I hope this knock puts all of that to rest. For all the trolling he receives on social media he has brought out his now infamous celebration of shutting out his ears — to say he wants to keep the naysayers away. Once again, he has let his bat do the talking.

On numerous occasions, I have heard the older generations speak in hushed tones about Gundappa Viswanath’s famous 97 not out in Chepauk. Against a menacing West indies attack, he stood his ground and it was an innings to remember for the ages as India won that Test match by 100 runs.

The ‘knowledgeable Chennai crowd’ was treated to a feast from another Karnataka batter, K.L. Rahul, who incidentally scored the same 97 not out in the World Cup opener versus Australia.

I am sure this innings will stand the test of time not only for the Chepauk public but for Rahul himself, as he is once again a settled member of this Indian team.

What’s next for Team India?

India now travels up north for their next World Cup encounter against Afghanistan on October 11 in Delhi. Star opener Shubman Gill has been ruled out of this game, and you would expect Shardul Thakur to take R. Ashwin’s place as a pacer could be preferred over a spinner in Delhi. The pitch though offers some respite to the batters — especially the ones who didn’t open their account in Chennai. It promises to be a belter of a track with lots of runs on offer.

Ask the South Africans, who notched up the highest-ever ODI score in a World Cup game posting 428/5 in their 50 overs. A whopping 754 runs were scored in that match with three South African batters scoring hundreds as they opened their World Cup campaign in style.

India though will be looking forward to the match as the weight of expectations would be significantly reduced thanks to their morale-boosting win against Australia in difficult conditions.

Will this team get a biopic of their own though? Only time will tell.

Onto the Capital next!
