8 Delhi hospitals, Indira Gandhi International Airport receive bomb threats

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

The bomb threats were reported from Indira Gandhi International Airport Terminal-3, Burari Hospital, Sanjay Gandhi Memorial Hospital, Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital, Bara Hindu Rao Hospital, Janakpuri Super Speciality Hospital, Deen Dayal Upadhyay, Dabri’s Dada Dev Hospital and Aruna Asaf Ali Government Hospital in Civil Lines

Delhi Fire Services on Sunday said eight city hospitals and IGI Airport received bomb threats through emails, 11 days after over 150 schools in Delhi-NCR received a bomb scare of unprecedented scale.

The bomb threats were reported from Indira Gandhi International Airport Terminal-3, Burari Hospital, Sanjay Gandhi Memorial Hospital, Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital, Bara Hindu Rao Hospital, Janakpuri Super Speciality Hospital, Deen Dayal Upadhyay, Dabri’s Dada Dev Hospital and Aruna Asaf Ali Government Hospital in Civil Lines, a senior DFS official said.

According to the police sources, the airport authorities received a threat email at 6 pm. Security has been beefed up in all the hospitals in the city and additional police force deployment was made at the airport, however, nothing suspicious has been recovered from any of the locations so far.

After a call regarding the threat from Burari Hospital at 3 pm, local police, bomb squad, dog squad were rushed to the spot, Deputy Commissioner of Police (north) M K Meena said. “Teams are checking the hospital. Nothing suspicious has been found yet.” In a statement, an official at the Burari Hospital said, “At around 3 pm, we received an email regarding a bomb in the hospital. After this, all the safety measures had been thoroughly checked and everything was stable. This was the first time we received such an email.”

Sanjay Gandhi Hospital also received a threat email around 3 pm, according to officials. “Soon after the call, we immediately pressed two fire engines at both the locations. Teams have been sent at all the locations from where we are getting calls. The search operation is going on,” a DFS official said.

On May 1, over 150 schools in Delhi-NCR received an identical threat email claiming that explosives had been planted on their premises, triggering massive evacuations and searches.

The authorities later declared it a hoax. The Delhi Police’s anti-terror unit special cell traced the domain of emails to Russia and it is suspected to have been formed with the help of the dark web — an encrypted online content that allows individuals to hide their identity and location from others.

Heat wave conditions to end across India except in Kerala and Rajasthan, says IMD

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

The IMD said rains accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds are very likely over Central, East, and South Peninsular regions till May 12.

Bringing in some respite, heat wave conditions are about to end across India except in Kerala and Rajasthan, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

“Heatwave is about to end across the country. Only in West Rajasthan and Kerala heatwave alerts have been issued. On Friday, the heatwave will only be present in West Rajasthan. We have issued it with a yellow alert because we do not have a lot of hope for the impact,” news agency ANI quoted IMD scientist Soma Sen as saying.

The IMD said rains accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds are very likely over Central, East, and South Peninsular regions till May 12.

Skymet Weather said light to moderate rain is possible over Uttarakhand, Northeast India, parts of East Uttar Pradesh, east Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Telangana, Lakshadweep, and Andaman and Nicobar Islands. This comes as a fresh western disturbance has arrived over the Western Himalayas.

The data by the IMD showed that heat waves this April were far worse than in 2023, the warmest year on record so far. This trend is likely to continue in May, with around eight to 11 heatwave days predicted over the south Rajasthan, west Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha, Marathwada and the Gujarat regions.

Amid the prevailing but weakening El Nino conditions, the IMD had earlier warned of extreme heat during the April-June period, coinciding with the seven-phase Lok Sabha elections. Hundreds of thousands of voters had to cope with the searing heat when they stepped out to exercise their franchise in the second phase of the elections on April 26. Polling for 94 constituencies across 12 states will take place on May 7.

The Ridge is also referred to as Delhi’s lungs. According to a petition, the DDA violated the explicit orders of the SC by permitting the cutting down of trees in the protected zone. The court has directed the DDA Vice Chairman to personally appear on the next date of the hearing to provide clarification.

The Supreme Court has issued a contempt notice against the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) following a plea alleging the felling of thousands of trees in Delhi’s Ridge area. According to the petition, the DDA has violated the explicit orders of the Supreme Court by permitting the cutting down of trees in the protected zone.

The Ridge, also referred to as Delhi’s lungs, holds immense ecological significance. Covering an area of 35 kilometres, it serves as a habitat for various species of flora and fauna.

Situated within the Northern Aravali leopard wildlife corridor, this extension of the Aravalli range shields the national capital from the heat winds originating from Rajasthan in the west.

In response to the allegations, the apex court noted that it had previously prohibited any permission for the felling of trees in the area.

The court directed the Vice Chairman (VC) of DDA Subhasish Panda to personally appear before the court on the next date of the hearing to provide clarification and accountability on the matter.

The court has also ordered an immediate halt to all construction and tree-felling activities in the Ridge Area, instructing for a status quo until further notice.

The city is likely to experience dry and hot weather till May 10. There may be patchy rain on May 10 and 11 which may bring some relief, a SkyMet official said.

It’s a scorching heat in Delhi on Wednesday as the national capital recorded a maximum temperature of 42 degrees Celsius.

The city is likely to experience dry and hot weather till May 10. There may be patchy rain on May 10 and 11 which may bring some relief, a SkyMet official said.

“Heat is on. 42 degrees for Delhi is the highest maximum of the season. Dry and hot weather may continue until May 10. Patchy rain on May 10 and 11 may give short-term relief. Heat wave is possible over Rajasthan and west Madhya Pradesh. Take care,” Mahesh Palawat, vice president of Meteorology and Climate Change at Skymet Weather, said on X (formerly known as Twitter).

The data by the India Meteorological Department (IMD) showed that heat waves this April were far worse than in 2023, the warmest year on record so far.
