The Biden-Harris Administration announced on May 2 that the requirements will end on May 11, the same day that the COVID-19 public health emergency ends. Further details related to ending these requirements will soon be provided.

The announcement followed a successful vaccination campaign that saw almost 270 million Americans receive at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine.

The vaccination requirements helped ensure the safety of workers in critical workforces, such as healthcare and education, and protected the populations they serve, enabling them to provide services without disruptions to operations.

The Federal government implemented requirements for its workforce in a way that increased vaccination to achieve 98 percent compliance, reflecting employees who had received at least one dose of a vaccine or had a pending or approved exception or extension request filed by January 2022.

The administration also put in place vaccination requirements for certain international travellers to slow the spread of new variants entering the country and to allow the healthcare system time to manage access to care if faced with an increase in cases and hospitalizations.

The announcement stated that vaccination remains one of the most important tools in advancing the health and safety of employees and promoting the efficiency of workplaces, but the decision to end the vaccination requirements for certain groups was made as the country is now in a different phase of its response, and the measures are no longer necessary.

The announcement also included HHS and DHS’s decision to start the process to end their vaccination requirements for Head Start educators, CMS-certified healthcare facilities, and certain noncitizens at the land border. The administration will provide further details in the coming days related to ending these requirements.

COVID-19 hampered childhood vaccination rollout, may lead to increase in preventable diseases: UNICEF

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

In total, 67 million children missed out on one or more potentially lifesaving vaccines during the pandemic, and efforts to catch up have stalled despite increasing outbreaks.

The COVID-19 pandemic has had a profound impact on almost every aspect of life, including healthcare. One of the most significant impacts of the pandemic has been the disruption of routine vaccination programs, leading to outbreaks of vaccine-preventable diseases.

According to a new report by UNICEF, people all over the world lost confidence in the importance of routine childhood vaccines against killer diseases like measles and polio during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Rising childhood vaccines hesitancy

The report, UNICEF’s flagship annual State of the World’s Children, surveyed 55 countries and found that public perception of vaccines for children declined between 2019 and 2021 in 52 of them.

This trend was a “worrying warning signal” of rising vaccine hesitancy amid misinformation, dwindling trust in governments and political polarisation, said Catherine Russell, UNICEF executive director.

ALSO READ | India records highest daily COVID-19 cases in 8 months

The change in perception is particularly worrying as it comes after the largest sustained backslide in childhood immunisation in a generation during COVID disruptions. In total, 67 million children missed out on one or more potentially lifesaving vaccines during the pandemic, and efforts to catch up have stalled despite increasing outbreaks.

The data was collected by the Vaccine Confidence Project at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, which found that the picture of vaccine confidence varied globally.

In countries including Papua New Guinea and South Korea, agreement with the statement “vaccines are important for children” declined by 44 percent, and more than a third in Ghana, Senegal, and Japan.

ALSO READ | Resurging Covid — it’s time to reintroduce the aggressive testing, vaccination and behaviour regimen

In the United States, it declined by 13.6 percentage points. In India, China, and Mexico, confidence remained broadly the same or increased.

Outbreaks of vaccine-preventable diseases

The consequences of vaccine hesitancy are becoming increasingly evident, with outbreaks of vaccine-preventable diseases being reported in many countries – mostly in Africa but also in the United States of America and India (of measles), the report said.

In India, about 5.7 million children, about ten percent of those to be vaccinated, were left out because of COVID-related logistical problems. While over 46 million children in India have been vaccinated, the 2022 results, still being tabulated, will only be available in June.

UNICEF’s State of the World’s Children Report says the percentage of infants left behind is high in many countries, including Myanmar, where it’s 55 percent, Nigeria, Indonesia, Brazil, and Afghanistan. In all these countries, the backlog is roughly between 25 and 30 percent.

ALSO READ | BMC asks parents to urgently immunise their children amid rising cases of measles in Mumbai

With one in five children not fully vaccinated and preventable illnesses beginning to happen, the UNICEF report stressed the importance of all countries having the funds for vaccines, new vaccines being developed quickly, supply chains being efficient, and digital technologies helping ensure the data regarding immunisation schemes are accurate and up to date.

The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the importance of vaccines in protecting individuals and communities. It is essential to continue to promote vaccination as a vital public health intervention and address vaccine hesitancy through education and communication. Failure to do so risks undermining the significant gains made in public health over the last few decades.

People with long COVID smell loss have reduced brain activity, study finds

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

The study, the first of its kind, builds on previous work undertaken during the first wave of the pandemic, which was one of the first to describe the link between COVID-19 infection with both losses of smell and taste.

A recent study published in EClinicalMedicine has discovered that people with long COVID who suffer from loss of smell experience different patterns of brain activity.

The research used MRI scanning to compare brain activity in three groups: people with long COVID who lost their sense of smell, those whose sense of smell had returned to normal after COVID infection, and people who had never tested positive for COVID-19.

The study revealed that people with long COVID smell loss had reduced brain activity and impaired communication between two parts of the brain responsible for processing important smell information: the orbitofrontal cortex and the pre-frontal cortex.

However, this connection was not impaired in people who had regained their sense of smell after contracting the coronavirus. The findings suggest that long COVID-related anosmia is linked to a change in the brain that prevents smells from being processed properly.

The study’s lead author, Dr. Jed Wingrove from the UCL Department of Medicine, noted that persistent loss of smell is just one way that long COVID is still impacting people’s quality of life. However, the study provides reassurance that, for most people whose sense of smell returns, there are no permanent changes to brain activity.

The study’s joint senior author, Professor Claudia Wheeler-Kingshott from the UCL Queen Square Institute of Neurology, said the findings raise the intriguing possibility that olfactory training, or retraining the brain to process different scents, could help people with long COVID recover their sense of smell.

ALSO READ | Woman warns of hearing loss as COVID-19 symptom | How common is it

Additionally, the research suggests that the brains of people with long COVID smell loss might be compensating for their lost sense of smell by boosting connections with other sensory regions. Their brains showed increased activity between the parts of the brain that process smell and areas that process sight, such as the visual cortex.

“This tells us that the neurons that would normally process smell are still there, but they’re just working in a different way,” explained Dr. Wingrove.

The study, the first of its kind, builds on previous work undertaken during the first wave of the pandemic, which was one of the first to describe the link between COVID-19 infection with both losses of smell and taste.

Professor Rachel Batterham from the UCL Division of Medicine, who was also a joint senior author of the study, emphasized the significance of the research, stating that it “provides further evidence of the wide-ranging and long-lasting impact of COVID-19 on health.”

“Our COVID-19 wards are running at full capacity. In the last month, we’ve admitted over 40 patients, including children and adults diagnosed with COVID-19 infection. Among them, three exhibited conjunctivitis symptoms, which we haven’t seen in past surges,” said Dr Dhiren Gupta, senior consultant for COVID-19 patient management at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital in Delhi.

Dr Gupta also told Mint that in the last 10 days, the hospital’s admissions have been primarily for COVID-19 patients.

A top government epidemiologist told Mint that since infection is present in the community, hospitalisations will increase but the nature of the infection remains mild.
