Bengaluru water crisis: Traffic islands, medians go dry in the ‘garden city’

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

Bougainvilleas and marigolds can be seen across most of the traffic islands, medians, and circles in Karnataka’s capital city.

Amid a severe water crisis in Bengaluru, the contractors tasked with maintaining the plants on traffic islands, medians and circles in the city are faced with tough times. Grappling with the challenges of keeping these plants alive, they are unable to meet the required demand for water, officials said.

One can easily find bougainvillaeas and marigolds across most of the traffic islands, medians, and circles in Karnataka’s capital city. “During summers, these plants require double the usual amount of water. However, our ability to meet this demand is hampered by acute water shortage,” The Times of India quoted a senior official from BBMP’s horticulture department as saying.

However, authorities are unable to meet the required demands at the moment.

The official said they were “working tirelessly to provide a weekly dose of water to horticulture plants spread across the city”.

Due to the water crisis, contractors are facing losses regularly.

A contractor informed the national daily that borewells in Bengaluru have dried up. As a result, they are forced to rely on distant sewage treatment plants (STPs) for treated water.

“This, coupled with rising diesel prices, has made the task even more challenging,” the contractor said.

As per the report, there are around 10 contractors involved in watering the plants in Bengaluru city.

Another one stated that earlier they used to water these green spaces daily, but now this has come down to once every three days.

“Fewer trips mean losses for us and we are losing ₹1 lakh every month,” the contractor said.

Meanwhile, Lalbagh and Cubbon Park, maintained by the horticulture department, earlier used to get 15 lakh litres of treated water daily for the maintenance of trees.

However, the water levels in the borewells within these gardens have gone down drastically.

Speaking with The Hindu, M. Jagadeesh, Joint Director (Parks and Gardens), Horticulture Department, said that irrespective of how many times they water these trees and plants, the soil immediately dries up due to the scorching heat. “This has caused some withering. This concern can only be addressed by rains,” the official added.

Recently, a survey from the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) highlighted that Bengaluru’s urbanised area has expanded by 1055% since 1973.

From a mere 8%, it has gone up to 93.3% in 2023, it stated. This means that the city only has around 7% of the green cover left.

Bengaluru water crisis: Hotels, resorts to host rain dance, pool parties during Holi 2024

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

The water crisis has gripped Karnataka’s capital city and other neighbouring cities in the state after thousands of borewells dried up in the region.

As a severe water crisis continues to grip Bengaluru, hotels and resorts in the city are planning to host pool parties and rain dances for the parched citizens on the occasion of Holi. The Bengaluru page of BookMyShow features a list of upcoming major Holi parties in the city, while several of them are offering access to the pools accompanied by food, drinks and DJ music with ticket prices starting at just ₹49, Moneycontrol reported.

In Bengaluru’s Electronic City, the Meenakshi Resort is offering the “biggest pool access” and rain dance, starting from 11 am to 6 pm on March 24-25, as part of its “Rangila Utsav”. Touted to be Bengaluru’s biggest Holi party, the ticket prices start at ₹99 on the online platform.

Another one is Hotel Leroy Grand in Yashwanthpur, hosting the “only rooftop open-air pool party” in Bengaluru. The event, named ‘Holigram pool party’, starts on March 23 and will go on until March 26. The tickets for this event also start from ₹99.

The Lago Palms Resort in Bettadasanapura will be hosting “Desi Holi Vol 08 – Open Air – Pool Holi Festival” from March 23 to 25. The event also offers a “huge rain dance zone” and a pool party, with ticket prices starting at ₹199.

With “free unlimited colours and rain dance” on offer, the Aloft Hotel in the Whitefield area will be organising the “biggest” Holi festival from March 23. The ticket prices for this event start from ₹49.

In Whitefield, another hotel, named Radha Hometel, will hold a pre-Holi party with “free colours and rain dance set up” from March 24-25. Tickets for this event start from ₹99.

Meanwhile, several other hotels and resorts in the city have come up with dry Holi parties this year, with a major focus on food, drinks, colours and music.

This comes at a time when several reverse osmosis (RO) drinking water plants, set up by the civic body in the city, have become inoperative, while other private RO drinking water plants are closed due to unavailability of water, The Hindu reported.

A lot of these RO plants draw water from nearby borewells that have either gone dry or water levels have depleted.

The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has set up more than 600 water plants in the city to offer subsidised drinking water to the locals — starting from 20 litres of water for just ₹5.

On Thursday, Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar claimed that “there is no water crisis” in Bengaluru. “As far as Bengaluru goes, there is no water crisis… Around 7,000 borewells have dried up. We have made arrangements for all that. We have taken over tankers. We have identified the water sources. We will see that water is supplied,” he said.

Bengaluru water crisis: Calls for work from home, online classes grow as many return to hometowns

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

Many IT professionals in Bengaluru have already left the city and temporarily shifted to their hometowns.

In the wake of an acute water crisis in Bengaluru, tech professionals in the city have gradually started returning to their hometowns temporarily as calls for companies to switch to work-from-home mode grow. Educational institutes in the IT hub are being advised to resume online classes to save water and reduce the burden on students.

With the water shortage situation worsening every passing day and temperature touching 40 degrees Celsius, multiple citizens and citizen groups have, on social media, urged the Congress-led state government to make work from home mandatory for IT companies in Bengaluru city and also to give orders for online classes for children from home.

“With sizzling hot days and severe water crisis prevailing in Bengaluru city and no major rains in sight as of now for the month, it’s high time that government of Karnataka considers work from home option till the monsoon begins,” read a post on X by a group of weather enthusiasts, who go by the name Karnataka Weather (@Bnglrweatherman).

Citizens’ Agenda for Bengaluru, another group on X, wrote, “Water crisis – online classes and work from home? If students and employees are allowed to work from home, many will go back to their hometowns, reducing pressure on the city!”

Several others pointed out that the demand for water would come down if employees worked from home as many of them may consider returning to their hometowns. Some IT professionals have left the city and temporarily moved to their hometowns.

“The water crisis forced us to move temporarily. Despite this, we’re still paying a hefty monthly rent of Rs 25,000 for a flat we cannot live in,” Deccan Herald quoted a person as saying.

The water crisis has gripped Karnataka’s capital city after thousands of borewells dried up in the region.

Moreover, the chances of respite seem bleak in the coming weeks as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted that the state will likely witness above-normal temperatures this summer — from March to May. The weather department has forecast heatwave conditions in north interior parts of the state in the coming months.

“We are not having any cloudy weather and therefore, the temperature is rising but there is a probability of normal rainfall as well,” A Prasad, Scientist, India Meteorological Department (IMD), told PTI. “No rainfall happened in February. And it is mainly because of this El Nino condition that this time we had an early summer-like situation. Though the summer begins in March, its effect has been felt from February itself for the last few years. It’s also because of global warming,” he said.

Meanwhile, Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar said on Monday that the state had not witnessed such a drought in the last three decades. He added that the next two months are “very important.”

Shivakumar noted that the Congress government is making all possible efforts to manage the crisis and supply water to the citizens.

“In the last 30-40 years we had not seen such drought; though there was drought earlier we had never declared such a large number of taluks as drought-affected,” Shivakumar said.

Karnataka has already declared drought in 223 out of 240 taluks. Out of the total, 196 are categorised as severely drought-affected regions.

Bengaluru Water Crisis: Treated water to be filled in drying lakes to replenish groundwater

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

The city needs about eight thousand million cubic feet (TMC) from March to May while there is 34 TMC water in reservoirs, the officials said.

Civic authorities in Bengaluru have decided to fill the drying lakes with 1,300 million litres per day of treated water to replenish groundwater sources in the city, where about 50% of the borewells have dried up.

Aimed at managing the water crisis in Bengaluru, the civic body Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) will also install filter borewells and construct water plants using an innovative technology near the restored lake beds to supply water after testing, BWSSB officials said.

This initiative has been taken up in association with Indian Institute of Science (IISc), BWSSB Chairman Ram Prasath Manohar said, adding that this is expected to add about 20–30 MLD of water into the system.

The Irrigation Department is supplying water in Devanahalli, where the Kempegowda International Airport is located, by treating the water from the Kote lake with a similar initiative.

As part of the plan, lakes in Bellandur, Varthur, Nayandahalli, Herohalli, Attur and Jakkur will be refilled initially, the official said.

Pointing out that Bengaluru requires 2,100 MLD of potable water, out of which 1,450 MLD comes from Cauvery river, officials sought to assure that there is sufficient water in the reservoirs to last till July.

The city needs about eight thousand million cubic feet (TMC) from March to May while there is 34 TMC water in reservoirs, the officials said.

The remaining 650 MLD of the city’s water requirement comes from borewell water, they pointed out. There is a 250 MLD deficit here largely due to lack of rains, depleting underground water levels and exploitation of groundwater, they added.

Meanwhile, BWSSB has extended the registration deadlines for water tanker owners till March 15 aimed at encouraging more water suppliers. As on date, 1,530 tankers have registered, officials said.

In a bid to tackle the water mafia, the government has taken over private water tankers, Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar, who is also in-charge for Bengaluru development, said.

“About 50 per cent of the borewells in the city have dried up. We have decided to take control of thousands of private water tankers (by registering) to supply water from sources outside the city. We have left the pricing to officials as factors like distance travelled determines costs. Unused milk tankers will be used to ferry water,” Shivakumar said.

Meanwhile, the opposition BJP has planned a protest in the city on Monday against the alleged mismanagement of the water crisis in Bengaluru.

Responding to this, Shivakumar said, “If they give any constructive suggestions, we are certainly open to considering them.”

Bengaluru water crisis: Use of potable water for car washing, gardening banned

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

BWSSB will levy a penalty of ₹5,000 for first-time offences, while repeated offences will attract an additional penalty of ₹500 per day.

The authorities have banned the use of potable water for non-essential purposes in Bengaluru as the Karnataka capital continues to reel under a severe water crisis that shows no signs of abating. The Bengaluru Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB), in an order dated March 7, said that the use of drinking water for cleaning vehicles, construction of buildings and roads, gardening, fountains and other maintenance work is strictly prohibited in the city. It further stated that all the malls and theatres were permitted to use water only for drinking purposes.

If a person is found violating the orders, BWSSB will levy a penalty of ₹5,000 for a first-time offence, while repeated offences will attract an additional penalty of ₹500 per day, reports said.

The water crisis has gripped the IT hub after thousands of borewells dried up in the region. The BWSSB further asked residents to report violations to its call centre number 1916. In response to soaring temperatures and depleting groundwater levels in Karnataka’s capital city, the BWSSB has issued a crucial ban order under Sections 33 and 34 of the Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Act, 1964, officials said.

The decision was taken by the board to address the urgent need for water conservation in the city.

People have been requested to use the drinking water judiciously, emphasising essential purposes to combat the water shortage, officials said.

“It’s crucial to supply drinking water to 1.40 crore population of Bengaluru. With the summer heat intensifying and groundwater resources depleting, it is necessary to stop the wastage of drinking water to ensure its availability for all,” read the BWSSB order.

Talking about the BWSSB order, chairperson Ram Prasath Manohar said there is no water shortage in areas where Cauvery water is supplied. However, the issue lies in the rest of the city, he added.

Manohar said that currently 1,470 MLD of water is being supplied to meet the demand of the Bengaluru city.

Earlier, the state government decided to cap prices for each load of water tanker based on the capacity and distance from where the water is being supplied. The decision was taken after complaints of private tanker water prices surging in several localities in the city.

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

NIA unveils new images of Bengaluru blast suspect, seen without cap and mask on a bus. Investigation continues with a 10 lakh rupee reward for information leading to the suspect’s capture. Despite the incident, The Rameshwaram Cafe plans to reopen its Brookfield outlet on March 8 as recovery progresses.

In a significant development in the investigation of the March 1 explosion at The Rameshwaram Cafe in Bengaluru’s Whitefield area, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) has released new visuals of the suspect. The images capture the suspect travelling on a bus without wearing a cap or mask.

According to sources quoted by News18, the NIA recovered the suspect’s baseball cap close to a nearby mosque. The source indicated that it appears the suspect changed his clothes following the blast.

Surveillance footage from CCTV cameras has provided crucial details about the suspect’s movements on the day of the incident. The footage captures the suspect’s arrival at a bus stop approximately 100 meters from the cafe via a public bus around 10:45 am.

Subsequently, the suspect entered the cafe at 11:34 am, exited at 11:43 am, and then walked over a kilometre to another bus stop, where he boarded a public bus to escape.

Alongside the image, the NIA has declared a cash reward of 10 lakh for individuals providing information leading to the identification and apprehension of the suspect.

Sources within the investigation agency assured that the identities of informants sharing relevant details with the NIA will be strictly confidential. Moreover, the NIA has established two helpline numbers – 080-29510900, 08904241100 and an email address – info.bir.nia@gov.in – for public assistance in the investigation process.

Meanwhile, Rameshwaram Cafe‘s Brookfield outlet is set to reopen on March 8. Raghavendra Rao, co-founder and CEO of the renowned eatery, announced the reopening date, expressing gratitude to authorities for their support during this challenging period.

“As we face this challenging situation, we want to thank the authorities for their support. We firmly believe that no force can dampen the spirit of our nation. We have decided to reopen our Brookfield outlet within a week of the unfortunate incident, on the auspicious day of Mahashivratri, March 8,” stated Raghavendra Rao.

Explained: Why Bengaluru is grappling with severe water crisis

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

Given the situation, apartments and gated communities have instituted stringent measures to conserve water.

Bengaluru is once again faced with a severe water crisis and nearly 6,997 of the city’s 14,700 borewells have run dry. In response to the growing crisis, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar, cabinet ministers, and officials called a crucial meeting to address the shortage of drinking water in the state capital.

Deputy Chief Minister Shivakumar issued a stern warning to water tanker owners, threatening overhaul if they failed to register their tankers with the authorities by the March 7 deadline. Currently, only 10% of the total water tankers in Bengaluru have completed the registration process.

Why the Crisis?

Weakened southwest monsoon rainfalls depleted groundwater levels, while diminished water reserves in the Cauvery River basin reservoirs further compounded the issue. The city’s rapid urbanisation against its inadequate infrastructure has further exacerbated the scarcity.

Given the situation, apartments and gated communities have instituted stringent measures to conserve water. Rationing measures are being implemented, alongside initiatives such as pool closures and adjustments to water pressure.

With summer forecast to be exceptionally harsh this year, over 7,000 villages across Karnataka and 1,193 wards, including those in Bengaluru Urban district, face the spectre of a drinking water crisis in the coming months. The vulnerable areas, as identified by the government, are in urgent need of attention and intervention.

The Solution

In response, the state government has allocated Rs 556 crore for water supply initiatives. Deputy Chief Minister Shivakumar stressed the collective responsibility in tackling the crisis, stressing that water was a shared resource belonging to all.

Plans are underway to establish a ‘war room’ where officials will collaborate to devise solutions. Additionally, efforts are being made to standardise the pricing of water tankers.

Meanwhile, residents are also stepping up efforts to conserve water. Several apartment complexes have implemented measures such as limiting car washes, reusing discharged water from RO purifiers, and advocating for waterless celebrations of festivals like Holi.

As Bengaluru grapples with its most severe water crisis yet, concerted efforts from both the government and citizens alike are imperative to mitigate the impact and ensure sustainable water management for the future.

‘Want to show you one more trailer’: Threat mail to Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah, ministers warns of more blasts

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

The sender demanded $2.5 million (around ₹20 crore) and threatened to target buses, trains, temples, hotels, and other public areas if their demands were not met.

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and multiple cabinet ministers on Tuesday received a threat mail, warning of an explosion in Bengaluru at 2:48 pm on Saturday. The message was reportedly sent by an individual, who identified himself as Shahid Khan, as per ANI sources.

The email, originating from the address Shahidkhan10786@protonmail.com, contained threats of large-scale explosions in various public areas throughout Karnataka. “What are your thoughts on the movie trailer?” read the email.

The sender demanded $2.5 million (around ₹20 crore) and threatened to target buses, trains, temples, hotels, and other public areas if their demands were not met. Additionally, the email mentioned plans to target the Ambari Utsav bus and escalate their demands on social media, promising to upload screenshots of the threatening email and tweet about the next explosion. “We want to show you one more trailer,” the mail further read.

The threat specifically mentioned CM Siddaramaiah, Deputy CM DK Shivakumar, the state home minister, and the Bengaluru top cop as potential targets. Meanwhile, the Bengaluru City Crime Branch police have registered a case on their own accord regarding the mail.

Authorities are actively working to ascertain the identity of the sender and evaluate the credibility of the threat.

The bomb threat mail comes shortly after an improvised explosive device (IED) blast occurred at The Rameshwaram Cafe, a popular eatery in Bengaluru, on March 1. The explosion resulted in at least 10 people getting injured. They are currently receiving treatment at different hospitals. The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has now taken charge of the investigation into the explosion.

Earlier, Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar described the explosion at The Rameshwaram Cafe as a low-intensity blast. He explained that a youth placed a small bag at the location, which exploded after an hour. Shivakumar mentioned that 7-8 teams have been formed to investigate the incident thoroughly, looking into all possible angles. He reassured the residents of Bengaluru, urging them not to worry.

State Home Minister G Parameshwara stated that several CCTV footage have been collected and are being examined to understand the incident from every angle, including the possibility of a jealousy factor. He appealed to the opposition to cooperate and avoid politicising the issue.

Rameshwaram Cafe blast: NIA conducts searches in Chennai and Bengaluru

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

Thus far, the police have identified a suspect from CCTV footage that shows him leaving a bag inside the cafe. The suspect is a 28-30-year-old man who is still at large and is dressed in a mask, hat, and spectacles.

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) launched searches at various locations in Chennai and Bengaluru on Tuesday as part of its investigation into the recent blast at The Rameshwaram Cafe. The NIA swung into action after the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) handed the probe to the agency. The low-intensity explosion at The Rameshwaram Cafe in Brookfield, East Bengaluru, on March 1, left at least 10 people injured.

Speaking anonymously to Hindustan Times, an NIA officer stated, “We are looking at all the possible angles, including the role of IS cadre since there have been similar blasts in Coimbatore and Mangaluru in the past few years.”

The Karnataka government acknowledges the gravity of this issue and places the safety of the citizens as a top priority, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah earlier said. The Central Crime Branch (CCB) police are diligently investigating the incident, and currently, the culprits remain at large, he said.

About the cafe explosion, the Bengaluru police had already filed a complaint under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act and Explosive Substances Act.

Thus far, the police have identified a suspect from CCTV footage that shows him leaving a bag inside the cafe. The main suspect in the case is a 28-30-year-old man who is still at large and is dressed in a mask, hat, and spectacles. According to the continuing investigation, an IED device with a timer may have set off the explosion. No arrests have been made as of yet.

G Parameshwara, the home minister for Karnataka, earlier said he was confident the suspect would be arrested soon. He disclosed that investigators have obtained 40-50 CCTV recordings of the blast and that numerous teams are actively pursuing leads. Parameshwara noted that the suspect likely travelled to the cafe by bus, with the Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) confirming 26 such routes, as reported by PTI.
