Axis Bank stock move could be a trap for investors, says SP Tulsian

Axis Bank

Axis Banks’ results are quite weak, they are yet to announce the new CEO, no idea on what will be the asset quality scenario and for the last four to six quarters the bank is saying that probably this is end of the asset quality pain, so this could be a big trap, said market expert SP Tulsian.

“If you want to move with momentum, if you want to ride the momentum, that can be the choice of a trader but as a fundamental analysts I am not at all convinced with financial performance and won’t give a buy call on the stock,” Tulsian told CNBC-TV 18.

Have accumulate rating with target price of Rs 560 on Axis Bank, says Siddharth Purohit

Axis Bank posted its first ever quarterly loss since its listing. The asset quality worsened, the slippages rose four fold and not just that the provisions rose three fold sequentially in the fourth quarter.

Siddharth Purohit of SMC Institutional Equities share his views and outlook on the stock and its results.

“The management has taken a very bold decision of taking forward the cleaning up process of the balance sheet and a large part of the slippages for this quarter has come from the known sources,” he said.

“One should not take it in a negative way, there could be a knee-jerk reaction but I would suggest that one can start accumulating the stock at any correction,” he added.

“As of now we have an accumulate rating on the stock with a target of Rs 560,” Purohit said.

“One should start accumulating, there can be much more accumulation to the stock,” he further mentioned.

Axis Bank crawled up to be the top index gainer, gaining by more than 9%, 9.21%.  in Friday’s session after slumping 10% in the pre-open and losing nearly 2% as soon as the market opened.

The bank stock extended gains despite the earnings.

In a short span of time, the stock recovered by 8% from its lows after losing more than a percent in the opening and nearly 10% in the pre-opening session.

The stock was volatile in the intital trade but from 9:33 am, it became among the top Nifty gainers by gaining more 4%, recovering from the losses.

Axis Bank crawled up to being the top gainer for both the indices and did not show volaitility post the initial trades.

The bank reported its fourth-quarter earnings with a net loss of Rs 2,188 crore in March quarter against the profit of Rs 1,225 crore in the corresponding quarter last year.

Country’s third largest private sector lender’s gross non-performing assets (NPAs) during the quarter deteriorated to Rs 34,248. 64 crore, at 6.77% of total loans.

The regulatory guidelines by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has forced the bank to recognise other accounts as bad loans that led to the Q4 loss, said Shikha Sharma, MD and CEO.

The stock, however, is gaining despite the results and not meeting the expectations of a profit.

The regulatory guidelines by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has forced the bank to recognise other accounts as bad loans that led to the Q4 loss, said Shikha Sharma, MD and CEO.

“We have made provisions for over 65% for all borrowers in bankruptcy court. Large part of power sector slippage has happened in Q4 and outstanding power sector exposure is about Rs 9,000 crore, 40% of that is non-performing,” said the Axis Bank management.

Country’s third largest private sector lender’s gross NPAs during the quarter deteriorated to Rs 34,248. 64 crore, at 6.77% of total loans.

The outgoing CEO of Axis Bank said that bank’s bet on infrastructure haven’t given expected results and that is also one of the reasons for its quarterly loss, “We made some significant bets on the infrastructure which didn’t turned out well.”

Sharma pinned hope on new NPA rules, “The new NPA rules will usher in a much better credit culture. With a functioning bankruptcy law, it makes sense to move forward on recognition and resolution.”

She also added that bank has changed the strategy from project business to high rated business.

Axis Bank on Thursday reported a net loss of Rs 2,188 crore in March quarter against profit of Rs 1,225 crore in the corresponding quarter last year.

The logo of Axis Bank is seen on an advertisement at its branch in Mumbai

Krishnan ASV of SBICAP Securities shared his views and expectation from Axis Bank and Yes Bank’s Q4 numbers.

Krishnan ASV said that we expect corporate stress pool of about Rs 180 billion and we think that will dissolve over the next three quarters.

“We believe a large part of that will come through in March. There is no precise number that I would be tracking but we are looking at where the stress is originating from,” he added.

He further said that we expect slippage of Rs 7,500 crore for Axis Bank in Q4 of FY18. Talking about Yes Bank, he said we expect credit cost for Yes Bank to remain elevated as they have to catch up.
