K Annamalai, in an interview with a leading English daily, had questioned former Chief Ministers of the state, including Jayalalithaa, for indulging in corrupt practices and mismanagement of states’ financial resources.

AIADMK General Secretary and Leader of Opposition (LoP) in the Tamil Nadu Assembly, Edappadi K Palaniswami, on Monday, said his party has passed a condemnation resolution against state BJP chief K Annamalai for his constant attack on the party and its former supremo Jayalalithaa.

“A condemnation resolution has been passed against K Annamalai where he gave a statement to an English daily, tainting the name of our leader Jayalalithaa. Our party leaders and cadres are sad & restless,” Palaniswami said to the media.

Annamalai, in an interview with a leading English daily, has questioned former Chief Ministers of the state, including Jayalalithaa, for indulging in corrupt practices and mismanagement of states’ financial resources.

“Many administrations in Tamil Nadu were corrupt. Former Chief Ministers have been convicted in courts of law. That is why Tamil Nadu has become one of the most corrupt states. I would say it is number one in corruption,” Annamalai said when he was asked whether the period between 1991-96 (when Jayalalithaa was at the helm) was among the worst periods in terms of corruption,” he said in an interview.

The BJP ally on Monday had also hit out at bureaucrat-turned politician for criticising the party despite being in the alliance and said it will be forced to rethink its ties with the saffron party if Annamalai is not restrained.

“Is it Annamalai’s intention to see that the AIADMK-BJP alliance does not win a seat in the 2024 Lok Sabha election and that Narendra Modi should not become Prime Minister again? Are not his activities oriented in this direction?” Jayakumar asked while speaking to media persons here.

AIADMK’s threat to the saffron party comes a day after Union Home Minister Amit Shah set a target of 25+ seats for the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) in the 2024 Lok Sabha polls in Tamil Nadu.

Will be forced to rethink alliance with BJP if K Annamalai targets us: AIADMK

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

Taking strong exception to Annamalai for his alleged criticism of the AIADMK and its leader, the party’s former state minister D Jayakumar accused the BJP leader of creating confusion in the alliance and sought to know if the Delhi leaders approved his actions.

The AIADMK on Monday questioned Tamil Nadu BJP chief K Annamalai’s intention to criticise the party despite being in the alliance, and said it will be forced to rethink its ties with the saffron party if Annamalai is not restrained.

Taking strong exception to Annamalai for his alleged criticism of the AIADMK and its leader, the party’s former state minister D Jayakumar accused the BJP leader of creating confusion in the alliance and sought to know if the Delhi leaders approved his actions.

“Is it Annamalai’s intention to see that the AIADMK-BJP alliance does not win a seat in the 2024 Lok Sabha election and that Narendra Modi should not become Prime Minister again? Are not his activities oriented in this direction?” Jayakumar asked while speaking to mediapersons here.

His criticism is unacceptable, Jayakumar said and wondered why Annamalai, who is fond of talking about corruption, is silent on corruption allegations involving the BJP in Karnataka. “Did the BJP win in Karnataka despite his election campaign in that state? Why doesn’t he talk about the corruption allegations in Karnataka during the Assembly election,” Jayakumar asked.

Indicating that the BJP on its own is nothing in Tamil Nadu, Jayakumar said his party’s strong presence in the state ensured BJP’s victory in the 2021 Assembly election. “After a gap of 20 years, the BJP made an entry into the state assembly with four MLAs today because of the AIADMK. Will Annamalai deny this? The BJP will get an identity only when it remains in the AIADMK alliance,” the former minister said.

He warned that the AIADMK would be forced to rethink its alliance with the saffron party if Annamalai continued to needlessly criticise the party and if the BJP central leadership did not restrain an “immature” Annamalai, who wants to project himself.

“Annamalai should hold his tongue and follow alliance dharma,” he said and pointed to the smooth ties in the ruling DMK camp where the Congress remained restrained despite the DMK always raking up the troubles it faced during the Emergency imposed by the Congress government in 1975.

Asked if he wanted a change in BJP state leadership, Jayakumar replied, “That’s not our demand. We want him to be restrained. Remember the AIADMK is like a huge banyan tree and the BJP only a plant.” Meanwhile, former Chief Minister O Panneerselvam flayed the BJP chief and said Annamalai’s alleged remarks on a former chief minister showed his “political immaturity.”

SC upholds Madras HC order allowing EPS as AIADMK interim general secretary

Summary

The Supreme Court on Thursday upheld the order of the Madras High Court, which allowed Edappadi Palaniswami (EPS) to continue as the interim general secretary of the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) in major setback to opposing O Panneerselvam (OPS).

It dismissed the petitions filed by OPS challenging the Madras High Court’s decision to restore former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister EPS as the party’s single leader.

Addressing the public, EPS said that the court’s judgement today put an end to the “suffering” AIADMK cadres had experienced for the past 6-7 months.

“God’s blessing is with us so that we got that judgement in our favor. AIADMK is not a family party, it is a common people’s party,” EPS said.

EPS added that he was in doubt about the direction the Supreme Court’s decision would take. He said that their final verdict siding with him confirmed late AIADMK leader J Jayalalithaa’s statement about the party’s 1,000-year rule over the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly.

“The veils under which DMK’s B team was functioning were torn by the Supreme Court’s verdict,” EPS said.

Calling the Supreme Court’s verdict a setback, expelled AIADMK leader O Panneerselvam said that ‘Amma’ is the permanent general secretary of their party and they have passed a resolution on the same. He said nobody has the power to act on the same. He said the EPS wants to capture his party and yesterday’s verdict was a setback for them. They would soon be meeting VK Sasikala and TTV Dhinakaran, he added.

A bench of Justices Dinesh Maheshwari and Hrishikesh Roy had reserved judgment on the matter on January 12.

The judgment came on a batch of pleas concerning amendments made to the party bylaws during the July 11, 2022 general council meeting.

Celebrations broke out in Chennai at MGR Maaligai, the AIADMK headquarters, over the court’s ruling. The HQ witnessed increased police presence as EPS supporters burst firecrackers and poured milk on cardboard cutouts of the newly reinstated AIADMK interim general secretary. They also offered sweets and flowers to photographs of EPS.

Reacting to the news, former minister and senior AIADMK leader D Jayakumar said it was a historic verdict and implied that OPS’s political future was over, gesturing a “zero.”

In August 2022, the Madras High Court had stayed the AIADMK General Council’s decision to elect EPS as interim General Secretary. Upon his election in July 2022, EPS’ first decision was to expel OPS much to the latter’s chagrin.

The feud between OPS and EPS has intensified with the upcoming Erode East assembly constituency election, scheduled for February 27. The constituency has been vacant since the death of Congress MLA Thirumaran Everaa, who was the son of EVKS Elangovan.

OPS also suffered another major setback when Erode district secretary T Muruganandam and other party functionaries on Tuesday joined hands with EPS and resigned from his claiming disappointment over OPS’ leadership.

With the Supreme Court’s decision, EPS will now be able to continue as the AIADMK’s interim general secretary, and the party can move forward with its plans for the upcoming elections.

EPS had previously announced that the election for the position of general secretary of the AIADMK would be postponed until the court resolved the ongoing leadership dispute between himself and OPS.

The AIADMK, which is a major political force in the state of Tamil Nadu, has been facing internal turmoil and leadership battles since the death of its leader, J Jayalalithaa, in 2016.

The verdict is likely to have a significant impact on the state’s politics, as the AIADMK is one of the two major parties in Tamil Nadu, along with the DMK.

AIADMK observes bandh demanding statehood for Puducherry

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

Secretary of the Puducherry unit of AIADMK (East) A Anbalagan, who gave the call for the shutdown, was taken into custody along with his supporters at his office in the early hours today.

Most shops and establishments remained closed in Puducherry on Wednesday in response to the call given by the AIADMK for a day-long bandh to urge the Centre to grant statehood for the Union Territory.

Secretary of the Puducherry unit of AIADMK (East) A Anbalagan, who gave the call for the shutdown, was taken into custody along with his supporters at his office in the early hours today.

Anbalagan had earlier said that statehood was “absolutely necessary” for Puducherry.

Privately-owned inter-state and intra-state buses went off the roads while state transport buses operated as usual. The Rajiv Gandhi bus terminal here remained forlorn with private operators not functioning.

Auto-rickshaws and tempo travellers did not ply as well. Hotels and jewellery shops remained shut in and around Puducherry. Vegetable shops and fish vendors suspended their business in most of the areas.

Police were deployed in strength at vantage points. Only two-wheelers could be seen on the main thoroughfares.

Government offices, however, functioned normally. Police said around 300 people were taken into preventive custody.

While giving the call for a bandh earlier, Anbalagan had said that as a UT, the elected government “was powerless and for each and every proposal relating to development of Puducherry, the elected government was at the  mercy of the Centre”.

He had stated that those opposing the bandh were not in favour of statehood for Puducherry.

Jaya death probe: VK Sasikala rejects allegations, says ready to face inquiry

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

The Justice A Arumughaswamy Commission of Inquiry (CoI) indicted Sasikala, medical doctor K S Sivakumar, former Health Minister C Vijayabaskar and the then Health Secretary J Radhakrishnan and recommended a probe against them. The Tamil Nadu government, which tabled the CoI report in the Assembly on Tuesday said it would initiate action after getting legal opinion.

VK Sasikala, a close confidante of late chief minister J Jayalalithaa, on Tuesday rejected allegations levelled against her in a commission’s report probing circumstances surrounding AIADMK leader’s death in 2016. Sasikala mentioned that she never interfered in any medical procedure nor did she deny taking Jayalalithaa abroad for treatment. She added she is ready to face inquiry in the case.

The probe panel said, they “have to be found fault with and investigation is to be ordered.” Sasikala is indicted considering several aspects, it said. KS Sivakumar is her relative. The government said that it was decided to initiate appropriate action against “certain individuals,” after obtaining the opinion of legal experts. This is in view of the CoI’s recommendations in its report.

The panel recommended investigation against former State Chief Secretary Rama Mohana Rao and two medical doctors, Dr YVC Reddy and Dr Babu Abraham. It however, did not specify if it found “fault” with them or not.

The CoI’s Terms of Reference (ToR) was to inquire into the circumstances leading to Jayalalithaa’s hospitalisation on 22 September, 2016 and subsequent treatment provided in the hospital till her demise on 5 December, 2016. The CoI, in its 475-page report, goes into allegations of conspiracy against Jayalalithaa by Sasikala and her relatives. The panel said that it was very clear that, “only on strong suspicion,” Jayalalithaa sent Sasikala out of her Poes Garden residence (from November 2011 to March 2012). Subsequently, after getting a letter from Sasikala that she would not interfere in politics, Jayalalithaa allowed her back into her Poes Garden residence and the leader kept her “at a distance.”

Citing depositions of witnesses, the panel said that it is “inferable” that due to some strained relationship, Jayalalithaa would have asked Sasikala and her relatives to leave Poes Garden.

Jayalalithaa death: Probe panel says Apollo Hospitals chairman issued false statements on late CM’s health

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

Justice Armumughaswamy Commission has also indicted top bureaucrats and politicians for their role in the death of the former chief minister, while giving Apollo Hospitals a clean chit

The Tamil Nadu Cabinet has tabled the findings of the Justice Armumughaswamy Commission tasked with investigating the death of former state chief minister J Jayalalithaa.

The report has accused Apollo Hospitals chairman Dr Pratap C Reddy for “issuing press releases with false statements that the CM can be discharged anytime”, in addition to accusing the chairman of not disclosing facts surrounding the late chief minister’s health.

“Apollo Hospitals Chairperson Dr Pratap C Reddy conducted briefings without disclosing real facts surrounding the late chief minister’s ailments and treatment,” the report added.

More significantly, however, the commission’s report has singled out Jayalalithaa’s personal aide VK Sasikala, personal doctor KS Sivakumar, former state health secretary J Radhakrishnan and former state health minister Dr C Vijayabaskar for being “at fault” in their role surrounding the death of the former chief minister.

The Commission found “criminality” against former state chief secretary, Rama Mohan Rao for signing 21 documents that approved treatment procedures to be conducted on the ailing chief minister back in 2016.

The report has recommended that further investigations be conducted on the role of the bureaucrats, politicians and Dr KS Sivakumar, by way of its findings.
Despite its findings against Dr Reddy, the Arumughaswamy Commission however found no specific fault with Apollo Hospitals, where Jayalalithaa was admitted for several weeks in 2016, in the period leading up to her eventual demise. “There is no evidence or documents put forth aside of those stating the Apollo Hospital gave the best treatment,” its report said.

An AIIMS Medical Committee tasked with assisting the Arumughaswamy Commission has concurred with its findings, in addition to issuing a clean chit to Apollo Hospitals in its treatment of the former chief minister.

The Arumughaswamy Commission was constituted by the then-AIADMK Government in 2017, at the insistence of former chief minister O Paneerselvam, to probe the death of Jayalalithaa. However, it was in 2021 that the newly-elected DMK Government promised a speedy end to the probe by way of an election promise to get to the bottom of the late chief minister’s death.

O Panneerselvam extends olive branch to “dear brother” Palaniswami; EPS rejects truce offer

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

Palaniswami rejected Panneerselvam’s call for joining hands and listed out a series of reasons, including alleging OPS was behind the attack on the party headquarters last month.

AIADMK leader O Panneerselvam on Thursday extended an olive branch to his rival, “dear brother” Edappadi K Palaniswami (EPS) to run the party jointly and said “let bygones be bygones” but the latter ruled out any association with OPS and even blamed him for the party’s defeat in the 2021 Assembly polls which the DMK-led bloc swept.

Incidentally, Pannerselvam’s call for unity also pertained to deposed AIADMK leader VK Sasikala and her nephew TTV Dhinakaran.

Palaniswami rejected Panneerselvam’s call for joining hands and listed out a series of reasons, including alleging OPS was behind the attack on the party headquarters here last month.

He flayed his rival for seeking “posts without efforts”. Palaniswami also moved the Madras High Court against a single judge order on Wednesday which declared as not valid the AIADMK General Council resolutions of July 11, which among others, ‘expelled’ Panneerselvam and picked EPS as the party’s interim general secretary.

A day after securing the High Court order in his favour, OPS informed there had never been an issue with the earlier dual leadership but said the arrangement of “joint leadership” was brought in to steer the party in the absence of late Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa.

“After Amma’s death (in December 2016), dear brother Palaniswami became CM and we travelled along extending good cooperation. Many democratic duties were discharged by us,” he said.

“After Amma’s death, Dharmayudham was undertaken (by him against deposed leader VK Sasikala and her family) and as per the wishes of party workers and leaders, it was decided as a policy that AIADMK will function under joint leadership,” he told reporters here. As a result, the Coordinator (OPS) and the joint coordinator (EPS) posts were created, Panneerselvam added.

There was no shortcoming in this aspect from either leaders as they diligently performed the roles in the interest of the party and within the ambit of its laws, the former CM said.

AIADMK workers had set their political path as “brothers” of the party founder, the late CM MG Ramachandran and “sons” of Amma (Jayalalithaa), but due to some “difference of opinion” there was an “abnormal situation,” OPS said, in an apparent reference to the differences with Palaniswami.

“Let bygones be bygones…would never say it affected us…1.5 crore party workers and the people who desire the good rule of MGR and Amma want this movement to remain united. Without holding any grudges of the past bitterness, we should throw them away (as) the party’s unity should be the sole idea,” he said.

Such an association was the desire of the party’s 1.5 crore workers, Panneerselvam said. Asked if his invitation extended to Sasikala and Dhinakaran also, the senior leader said it applied to all those “who strived for the party during” the period of MGR and Jayalalithaa and responded in the affirmative when prodded further.

Sasikala was a confidante of Jayalalithaa and was ‘expelled’ from the AIADMK in 2017, months after she was jailed in a disproportionate assets case.

Hitting out at Panneerselvam, Palaniswami said his rival often gave such invitations. “Against whom did he undertake Dharmayudham. He is now inviting them all. He wants posts, can’t live without it. He does not struggle for them, but wants post for himself and his family,” the former CM told reporters.

He slammed Panneerselvam’s son and Lok Sabha MP P Ravindranath for “praising” the MK Stalin-led DMK government, after meeting the CM recently and claimed that this had “demoralised” the party’s rank and file.

The AIADMK was founded by the late MGR against the DMK, he pointed out.

“How can we join. Should he (OPS) not have come to the General Council. He went to the party office with rowdies and attacked it, broke open the doors, damaged comps and stole key documents,” he said.

“How can we work with such a person who employs rowdies and goondas, despite being in the leadership role. Party workers were attacked. How can I work with him?” Palaniswami asked.

Claiming that he was not behind posts, Palaniswami said the single leadership chorus and the party projecting him as the CM face in the 2021 polls were due to the supporters’ desire and that he was not behind posts. EPS addressed Panneerselvam repeatedly as “elder brother”.

He further questioned OPS’ assertion of being a Jayalalithaa loyalist, insisting that Panneerselvam was the chief agent to her rival candidate in the 1989 Bodinayakkanur Assembly poll, whereas he has always been her supporter.

“How can he be a loyalist of Amma? We have been with Amma always. He will do anything for power,” EPS charged.

Meanwhile, in his plea before the HC, among other things, EPS contended that by granting an order of status quo ante as on June 23, the single judge has virtually interfered with the decisions taken in the general council meetings held on June 23 and July 11.

And the same is directly in contravention of the order of the Supreme Court dated July 6 this year passed against the order of a division bench of this court, which had placed restrictions on the GC meeting held on June 23.

The SC has ultimately stayed the operation of this order, he pointed out. The plea will come up for hearing on Monday.

Setback for Palaniswami as Madras HC rules in favour of O Paneerselvam in AIADMK power tussle

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

The order came as former party coordinator O Paneerselvam (OPS) moved the court to stay the conduct of the meeting. OPS had questioned the legality and violation of bylaws in convening the meeting.

The Madras High Court on Wednesday stayed the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) General Council’s decision to elect Edappadi K Palaniswami (EPS) as interim General Secretary. The court ordered convening a fresh General Council Meeting to elect a general secretary.

The order came as former party coordinator O Paneerselvam (OPS) moved the court to stay the conduct of the meeting. OPS had questioned the legality and violation of bylaws in convening the meeting.

Following the order, celebrations erupted outside OPS’s residence in Chennai.

On July 11, EPS was appointed as the interim general secretary of AIADMK, thus ending the dual leadership in the party. He had also expelled OPS. The party had terminated the coordinator and joint coordinator posts and has decided to create a Deputy General Secretary post, who will be selected by the party’s General Secretary.

PM Modi’s agenda for Tamil Nadu visit: Inauguration of projects and some old-school politics

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

During his two-day Tamil Nadu visit, the PM is expected to hold separate meetings with OPS and EPS.
The two Tamil leaders represent the two separate factions of BJP’s ally AIADMK.

Two birds with a stone — how it always is in politics. Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s proposed visit to Tamil Nadu on July 28 is no different. While the Prime Minister will be there to inaugurate the 44th FIDE Chess Olympiad, all eyes will be on his meetings with Ottakarathevar Panneerselvam (OPS) and Edappadi K Palaniswami (EPS).

The Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) has issued a statement detailing his itinerary for the Tamil Nadu visit. It reads, “The Prime Minister will inaugurate and lay the foundation stone of multiple projects of Sabar Dairy at Gadhoda Chowki, Sabarkantha, and thereafter travel to Chennai and declare open the 44th Chess Olympiad at JLN Indoor Stadium, Chennai, at around 6 pm. These projects will empower local farmers and milk producers and increase their incomes.”

Besides inaugurating infra projects, the Prime Minister will also attend the 42nd Convocation of prestigious Anna University in Chennai on July 29.

PM Modi to meet EPS and OPS?

PM Modi is expected to hold separate meetings with OPS and EPS. The two Tamil leaders — representing the two separate factions of BJP’s ally AIADMK — are engaged in a slugfest to establish their proximity with the power centre in the national capital. Both OPS and EPS are aware that the support of the PM and the BJP could prove crucial in the ongoing tussle to ‘legitimise’ their faction of the once Jayalalithaa-led party and remove the other one from the picture.

Recently, both EPS and OPS had come to Delhi expecting to hold separate meetings with PM Modi. However, the two leaders couldn’t secure an appointment either with the PM or BJP chief Jagat Prakash Nadda. While OPS could only meet President Droupadi Murmu to assure his support in the Presidential election, EPS attended the farewell hosted for outgoing President Ram Nath Kovind by PM Modi. In fact, when EPS returned to Chennai from Delhi, the OPS faction even mocked the leader for not receiving BJP’s support.

Some political observers believe that PM Modi won’t pick sides during the visit. They added that the BJP brass wants a united MGR-Jayalalithaa party as factions would only divide votes. Another section of analysts says that the BJP sees the cracks within the AIADMK as an opportunity for itself. They believe that the BJP would try to sideline both the factions of the AIADMK to emerge as the chief opposition party in Tamil Nadu.
