Lok Sabha election 2024: A SWOT analysis of DMK vs AIADMK in Tamil Nadu

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

DMK vs AIADMK in Lok Sabha Election 2024: Here’s a SWOT (Strength, Weakness, Opportunity, Threat) analysis of the two major political parties in Tamil Nadu as the stage is set for the single-phase election in the state.

Tamil Nadu, on Friday, April 19, went to polls in a single-phase election during the first phase of polling for 102 seats across 12 states and union territories. The key contest is between the two Dravidian parties – DMK and AIADMK leading their alliances. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) under the leadership of K Annamalai has cobbled an alliance of its own and hopes to throw a surprise.

MK Stalin-led DMK, a key constituent of the INDIA alliance, includes the Congress and the Left Parties in the alliance. Edappadi K Palaniswami-led AIADMK is also hoping to make a mark in the 2024 Lok Sabha poll.

Here’s a SWOT (Strength, Weakness, Opportunity, Threat) analysis of the two major political parties in Tamil Nadu:

Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK)

STRENGTHS: DMK President and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Stalin continues to maintain a resolute anti-BJP stance, particularly on contentious issues like the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA). Anti-incumbency is not a factor against the ruling party, which remains popular and ably backed by its robust organisational structure statewide. What further bolsters DMK’s position is the unflinching support from its allies, including the Congress and the Left parties, further uplifted by a symbiotic alliance and not a parasitic one.

WEAKNESS: The succession of MK Stalin after M Karunanidhi in DMK strengthens the charge of ‘family rule’ and ‘dynasty’ politics often made by the main rivals AIADMK and the BJP.  Allegations of graft against DMK ministers and the ongoing probe involving Balaji, KKSSR Ramachandran, Thangam Thennarasu, and Periyasamy further dent the party’s claim of a clean image. Although DMK has dismissed Jaffer Sadiq, an office-bearer from the party in connection with allegations of links with an international drug cartel, the issue is highlighted often by Leader of Opposition Edappadi K Palaniswami to target the DMK. The opposition AIADMK has also been targeting the DMK on the Cauvery River water issue, alleging that it hasn’t secured the state’s rights in Mekedatu issue as the Cauvery Water Management Authority took up the dam proposal of Karnataka for discussion and referred to the Central Water Commission.

OPPORTUNITIES: The Stalin government implemented social welfare measures including fare-free travel in state-run buses for women could consolidate their vote in its favour. The state government has also been able to attract a lot of investment in the manufacturing sector that could create job opportunities. The exit of O Panneerselvam, a leader belonging to the Mukkulathor community, may go against the AIADMK in Tamil Nadu’s southern districts.

THREATS: The Palaniswami-led AIADMK is a power to reckon in the state and commands considerable clout in the western part of Tamil Nadu along with the presence of a well-organised party structure. The opposition has been targeting the DMK government on sugarcane and paddy procurement at higher prices, which remains an unfulfilled poll promise. AIADMK fighting elections without an alliance with the BJP may help the opposition’s cause and strengthen its claim of representing a true Dravidian ideology devoid of dynasty politics. The sharp rise of the BJP under state chief K Annamalai and the strong response his padayatra received could throw electoral surprises for both Dravidian parties.

All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK)

STRENGTHS: Palaniswami has asserted himself as a strong leader and targeted both the ruling DMK and the BJP while championing his state’s interests. The former Tamil Nadu CM’s firm stance against CAA will also help project a secular image for his party. On the crucial Cauvery river water issue, Palaniswami has been seen prioritising Tamil Nadu’s rights including his administration’s initiatives, for instance, the Kudimaramathu scheme for water conservation and declaring the Cauvery delta region as a protected agricultural zone. During his tenure as the CM, he introduced a 7.5% quota for state school students in medical courses.

WEAKNESSES: A major gap in the party’s organisation is lack of a charismatic leader like the late J Jayalalitha. Despite serving a full tenure as Tamil Nadu CM, Palaniswami lacks the charisma to galvanise the state’s voters when compared to Stalin. Even organisationally, the AIADMK is a former shadow of itself against the well-oiled structure of the DMK and rising rank and file of the BJP led by K Annamalai. The party’s ongoing legal dispute between Palaniswami and Paneerselvam further weakens the structure and organisational strength. Despite distancing itself from the BJP, there remains scepticism among voters over its future course of action as the party leans more towards the right side of the political spectrum.

OPPORTUNITIES: In Tamil Nadu Lok Sabha polls, issues like drugs, CAA, and regional concerns will take center stage. and with the AIADMK’s stance on these topics, the party aims to solidify minority support and hopes to breach traditional DMK strongholds. The party’s strategies focus on addressing these pressing issues to sway voters in its favor.

THREATS: The symbiotic alliance of the DMK-led ruling INDIA block and their campaign is a huge threat to the AIADMK along with internal factionalism and litigation that dents the party’s image. The presence of a strong PM candidate in BJP in Narendra Modi who has invoked the legacy of MGR and Jayalalitha against the DMK family rule may benefit the saffron party at the expense of the AIADMK.

In 2019, the DMK-led bloc registered a historic win in Lok Sabha polls in Tamil Nadu, along with the lone Puducherry segment, giving a major advantage to the Congress-led UPA at the Centre.

Since then, “40/40” has been the mantra of the DMK and its allies to enthuse their cadre. On the other hand, a resurgent BJP, led by K Annamalai in the state, is going all out this time to end its political drought and register victory on as many seats as possible.

During the 2019 Lok Sabha polls, the DMK-led Secular Progressive Alliance won 38 of 39 seats in the state. While the DMK won 24 seats, the Congress got 8, CPI and CPI(M) two seats each, and VCK and IUML ended with one seat each. On the other hand, the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) managed to get only one seat — which went to the AIADMK, while other parties, including the BJP, failed to open their account in the poll-bound state.

Here’s a look at the key seats in Tamil Nadu:

  1. Thoothukudi

Largely a DMK bastion, Kanimozhi won from this seat in 2019 polls, defeating BJP candidate Tamilisai Soundararajan by over 3.47 lakh votes. She will again represent the DMK from this seat in 2024 polls

  1. Nilgiris

This reserved seat includes regions from the plains and the hills and houses a considerable tribal population. DMK leader and former Telecom Minister A Raja won from this seat last time, defeating AIADMK’s M Thiyagarajan by over two lakh votes. This time, Raja is pitted against Union Minister L Murugan.

  1. Coimbatore

Considered an AIADMK stronghold, this seat is presently represented by CPI(M) leader PR Natarajan. An industrial hub, the region has been loyal to the AIADMK, with the party earning significant gains from the district. This year, BJP has fielded K Annamalai from this seat against AIADMK’s Singai G. Ramachandran and DMK candidate Ganapathi P. Rajkumar.

  1. Sriperumbudur

The Sriperumbudur constituency, an industrial hub near Chennai, houses manufacturing units of big global players like Hyundai and Foxconn. In 2019, DMK’s TR Baalu won by over 5 lakh votes from this seat against Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) candidate A Vaithilingam. The DMK is confident of retaining the seat and has again fielded Baalu from here.

  1. Sivaganga

This seat was once a stronghold of former Finance Minister and veteran Congress leader P Chidambaram. In the 2019 polls, his son Karti Chidambaram trounced BJP National Secretary H Raja with a big majority of around 3.3 lakh votes. Karti is expected to contest this seat again this time.

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

AIADMK has now announced all of its 32 candidates for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, while party chief Edappadi K Palaniswami will launch the election campaign from Tiruchirappalli on Sunday.

The AIADMK on Thursday, March 21, released its final list of 16 candidates for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, scheduled to take place in seven phases from April 19 to June 1. The counting of votes will be held on June 4.

Of the 39 parliamentary constituencies in Tamil Nadu, the AIADMK will contest in 32 of them, with seven allotted to its allies — DMDK, Puthiya Tamizhagam and SDPI.

The party has now announced all of its 32 candidates. AIADMK chief Edappadi K Palaniswami will launch the election campaign from Tiruchirappalli on Sunday, March 24.

Of the 32 AIADMK candidates, five are doctors and five lawyers, including a woman lawyer, who once unsuccessfully contested against former CM late J Jayalalithaa when she was in the DMK. The party has fielded Simla Muthuchozhan from the Tirunelveli seat.

Besides her, the party has announced G Premkumar from Sriperumbudur, S Pasupathi from Vellore, M Kaliyaperumal from Tiruvannamalai, R Ashokan from Dharmapuri, Kumara Guru from Kallakurichi, P Arunachalam from Tiruppur and Singai G Ramachandran from Coimbatore among others.

In its first list released on March 20, Palaniswami announced 16 candidates, including former MP J Jayavardhan (Chennai south) and ex-MLA, Dr P Saravanan (Madurai) among others.

AIADMK has earmarked five seats — Tiruvallur (SC), Central Chennai, Cuddalore, Thanjavur and Virudhunagar — for the DMDK, while the other two allies, the Puthiya Tamizhagam (Tenkasi) and SDPI (Dindigul), will contest on one seat each.

Voting for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections in Tamil Nadu will be held on April 19 in a single phase.

In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, the Secular Progressive Alliance, led by MK Stalin’s Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), registered a landslide victory, winning 38 of the 39 seats in the state. The alliance also comprised Congress, VCK, MDMK, CPI, CPI(M), IUML, MMK, KMDK, TVK and AIFB among others.

The DMK won 24 seats, followed by Congress with 8, CPI and CPI(M) two seats each, VCK and IUML getting one seat each.

On the other side, the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) managed to get only one seat, won by the AIADMK, while the other parties, including the BJP, failed to open their account in the state.

This time, the Opposition’s INDIA bloc, including DMK and Congress, will be contesting against the AIADMK-led alliance and the NDA in Tamil Nadu.

Lok Sabha elections 2024: AIADMK releases first list of 16 candidates; details inside

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

The AIADMK is contesting the Lok Sabha elections 2024 in alliance with DMDMK, SDPI and Puthiya Tamilagam in Tamil Nadu.

The All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) on Wednesday released its first list of candidates for the Lok Sabha elections in 2024. The AIADMK is contesting the elections in alliance with DMDMK, SDPI and Puthiya Tamilagam in Tamil Nadu, General Secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami said.

While the DMDMK will contest in five seats, SDPI and Puthiya Tamilagam will get a seat each as part of the alliance, Palaniswami added.

According to The Times of India, the list includes the names of Royapuram Mano (Chennai North), J Jayavardhan (Chennai South), E Rajasekar (Kancheepuram), A L Vijayan (Arakkonam), V Jayaprakash (Krishnagiri), G V Gajendran (Arani), J Bhagyaraj (Villupuram), P Vignesh (Salem), S Tamilmani (Namakkal), Aatral Ashokkumar (Erode), KRL Thangavel (Karur), M Chandrakasan (Chidambaram), G Surjit Shankar (Nagapattinam), P Saravanan (Madurai), V T Narayanasamy (Theni), and B Ilayaperumal (Ramanathapuram).

This comes months after the AIADMK parted ways with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). In September 2023, the AIADMK walked out of NDA saying the BJP had made ‘unnecessary remarks’ about its former leaders, MoneyControl reported.

Meanwhile, the Congress party and M K Stalin’s Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) have agreed to a seat-sharing formula for the Lok Sabha elections in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry. The grand old party will contest nine seats, including former Finance Minister P Chidambaram’s stronghold Sivaganga, and the sole Puducherry constituency.

As per the pact, the DMK will contest 22 seats, including one by the KDMK under the Rising Sun symbol.

Among the southern states, Tamil Nadu, with its 39 Lok Sabha seats, is an extremely crucial state for the Opposition’s INDIA bloc. Of the 39 seats, 32 are unreserved, while seven are reserved for Scheduled Castes.

All 39 seats in Tamil Nadu and the sole Puducherry constituency will go to polls on April 19 in phase 1 of the Lok Sabha elections, the Elections Commission said last Saturday. As many as 102 seats across 21 states and Union Territories will go to polls in phase 1 of the general election. The results will be announced on June 4.

The BJP in Tamil Nadu is a raging startup — but is there a product-market fit?

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

What BJP may want is a boost in Tamil Nadu, like the one it got in West Bengal in 2019 when it got 18 out of 42 Lok Sabha seats, surprising everyone. As of now, it looks like the BJP is eyeing the votes that go to AIADMK. Even if it gets all the votes that went to its former allies in 2019, it won’t move the needle for the NDA alliance in Lok Sabha in 2024.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent spate of rallies in Tamil Nadu is an attempt to woo the voters in a state that has never elected a leader from the party to the Parliament, except once.

What the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) may want is a boost in Tamil Nadu, like the one it got in West Bengal in 2019 when it got 18 out of 42 Lok Sabha seats, surprising everyone. Can the 39-year-old firebrand K Annamalai, state president for BJP, deliver a surprise this time?

Will BJP’s offering have the necessary traction the party wants in the biggest economy (gross state domestic product of over ₹28 lakh crore) in South India?

Or, as an investor would ask a startup founder: is there a  product-market fit? The term describes to what extent a product satisfies an existing, unmet demand in a market.

BJP’s top offerings: Hindutva and Nationalism

Even after 50 years, the atheist Dravidian parties in power have not been able to convince the Tamil society to forsake religion, but neither has the Hindutva wave engulfed the political space in the state like it has in many other parts of the country.

BJP’s brand of nationalism doesn’t echo as intensely in Tamil ears as it does in, say, Uttar Pradesh. At least, it hasn’t so far.

The Pulwama terror attack, and the Indian Army’s response, is believed to have swung a lot of votes in BJP’s favour in the rest of the country. But in Tamil Nadu, it could not give the party any significant traction in the 2019 Lok Sabha election.

So, is any ideological persuasion futile in a state where the voter is known to look for tangible offerings, whether it’s television sets and laptops, cycles and scooters, free electricity and good roads, or just the good old cash in hand

People do vote differently in national elections but the voters of Tamil Nadu, for decades, have not gone beyond local parties.

What’s the product/service that BJP is offering aside from Hindutva and nationalism?

While many political observers —  both in favour of and against BJP —  see the party as an alternative to the nearly six-decades-old ‘Dravidian model’, which Chief Minister MK Stalin of the rival Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam described as “ellarukkum ellam” (everything, for everyone).

It may sound like an echo of “sabka saath, sabka vikas” (with everyone’s support, for everyone’s development), which has been Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s go-to slogan in recent years. The two parties may argue that the messages have subtle differences, which may be lost on the untrained ear.

Further, is Modi really offering an alternative to all Dravidian parties? On February 28, he praised former Chief Ministers of the state, the late MG Ramachandran (popularly known as MGR) and the late J Jayalalithaa, for the way they governed the state.

Both leaders belonged to the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK), which would place itself as a descendent of the Dravidian ideology.

Target audience: So, is the BJP gunning only for those who vote for AIADMK?

The AIADMK had a nearly 19% vote share in the 2019 elections. Five years since, it’s a much weaker party and BJP would like to corner a bulk of the votes.

Modi’s generous praise for MGR and Jayalalithaa can be seen as a recruitment call for the cadre, aside from a pitch to the voters. That’s a bigger setback for its former ally but not for DMK, which is part of the rival coalition at the national level.

Are there any other votes that BJP could eat into?

The two parties, DMK and AIADMK —  both have been BJP allies in the recent past —  have alternated to power in Tamil Nadu for nearly six decades. It’s inevitable that some people are tired of staring at the pendulum.

The space between the DMK and AIADMK is what many like the actor Rajinikant have noticed and aspired for, the late Vijaykanth captured some of it but couldn’t retain his hold for long, and smaller parties like the Naam Tamilar Katchi, led by director-turned-politician Seeman, have got a part of it, which they are holding on to right now.

How many such people are there?

In the 2021 state assembly election, parties other than DMK and AIADMK (and their respective friends) bagged nearly one in every four votes. This number could grow as anti-incumbency is natural.

Seeman’s party, believed to have a very sticky following among certain sections of the youth, got its biggest vote share at 6.6%.

Similarly, the Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) led by Anbumani Ramadoss has a steady following in certain districts and has maintained a 4-5% vote share in the last two assembly elections. The PMK fought the 2019 election in alliance with the AIADMK and the BJP.

Riding on Modi’s charm, the BJP could chip away into these votes but it is important to remember that in 2019, none of the parties, except AIADMK, could win a single seat.

The DMK-led alliance bagged all seats except for the one that AIADMK’s P Ravindhranath, the son of former chief minister O Panneerselvam, won in Theni.

Essentially, there’s a demand for an alternative but none of the options have attained critical mass so far.

More importantly, both AIADMK and PMK were allies of the BJP in 2019. So, even if all the votes that these parties had in 2019 get transferred to the BJP, it would not move the needle for significantly for the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) in the  Lok Sabha.

What it can do is make the BJP a serious contender in the state.

Local leadership is crucial to tweak the product to fit the market

In West Bengal in 2019, the relentless rabble rouser Dilip Ghosh led the campaign for BJP before being pushed into oblivion. In 2024, Annamalai has a different style, and arguably more substance than Ghosh, but he has been just as relentless as Ghosh.

Annamalai could’ve soaked in the success of his ‘Yen mann, yen makkal’ (my soil, my people) yatra —  he covered every assembly constituency in the state —  which was inaugurated by Home Minister Amit Shah and wound up by Modi (with a pat on the back).

But the former cop-turned-politician was ready with a fresh salvo within 48 hours. His latest video alleging the proliferation of illegal drugs in the state —  a claim backed by none other than Zoho founder Sridhar Vembu —  is the latest example of how the BJP leader has set narratives that forced the ruling DMK government on the defensive, time and again.

The party’s leadership has backed Annamalai’s energy even when it cost it its alliance with the AIADMK

BJP in Tamil Nadu is a lot like a young startup backed by the might of venture capital, and fronted by a passionate founder who is willing to do whatever it takes to grow the number of subscribers/users/customers.

Some experts rank him among the next crop of national leaders for the BJP alongside Himata Biswa Sarma in Assam, and, maybe a notch below, Yogi Adityanath (Uttar Pradesh’s chief minister).

The 2024 Lok Sabha election is as much a test for Annamalai as it is for the late Canadian communication specialist Marshall Mcluhan who famously said, “the medium is the message”.

In the absence of a serious difference between the offerings of BJP and DMK, the effectiveness of Annamalai as the medium could be tested.

If the electorate is clear about the goods and not about who delivers it, as the people of Tamil Nadu have been over the years, Annamalai and the BJP have nothing to lose and everything to gain. The focus is not the

However, Modi has extended more than a hand towards Tamil Nadu and is hoping that the people reciprocate.

Correction: An earlier version of the story wrongly said that there had never been a BJP Lok Sabha member from Tamil Nadu. Pon Radhakrishnan was elected to the Parliament from the Kanyakumari constituency in 2014. He lost in 2019.

AIADMK vs BJP: Friends turned foes slug it out in charged-up poll battle in Tamil Nadu

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

The AIADMK General Secretary, who severed poll ties with the BJP in September last year, due to Annamalai’s aggressive politics, is engaged in forming an alliance under his leadership.

Friends turned foes — the BJP and AIADMK — are locked in a rancorous war at times becoming personal targetting saffron party state chief K Annamalai, in a charged-up political atmosphere in Tamil Nadu ahead of the Lok Sabha election.

Anticipating the early announcement of the poll, the ruling DMK has initiated talks with its allies on seat-sharing and is gearing up to bring out its poll manifesto.

Though a multi-cornered contest appears imminent, as of now, the political parties barring the DMK and allies are still hazy on alliance.

While former Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami sees red at the mention of DMK president and Chief Minister MK Stalin, the loose cannons in his AIADMK devote more time on personally targetting Annamalai and sustain themselves in the limelight.

“Much of their ire is due to the BJP’s preference for former Chief Minister O Panneerselvam as a reliable ally than to AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami,” a senior BJP leader said.

BJP has never been comfortable in the company of ambitious Palaniswami, who in a bid to garner the minorities votes has expressed opposition to the Uniform Civil Code.

The AIADMK General Secretary, who severed poll ties with the BJP in September last year, due to Annamalai’s aggressive politics, is engaged in forming an alliance under his leadership.

Another cause for heartburn for the AIADMK was the shifting of loyalties by 12 of its former legislators and a MP, recently, to the BJP. A former MLA each from the DMK, Congress and DMDK, too joined the BJP.

Ridiculing it, former AIADMK Minister D Jayakumar remarked, “The Tamil Nadu Governor will invite Annamalai to form the government with those former MLAs.” Further, he likened the BJP state president to a “mud horse” and said Annamalai was creating an illusion that people were joining the BJP.

“Those who follow him are likely to disappear when the mud horse disintegrates in water,” Jayakumar claimed.

Both the Dravidian majors too have been welcoming a steady trickle of workers from other parties, as it is election time.

Though the Congress, Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi and the Left parties too have a presence in certain pockets in the state, they toe the DMK’s line.

While the ruling DMK is comfortably placed as its alliance is intact, AIADMK and BJP are vying to form an alliance with smaller parties. Other political parties such as the Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK) and the Pattali Makkal Katchi are yet to decide on an alliance and the options before them are only a few — either the BJP or AIADMK.
