10 daily-use items that are wreaking havoc on environment

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

Certain commonly used articles like gas stoves, toothpaste and sanitary napkins contribute in a big way to environmental pollution.

Gas stoves, something that almost every household uses every day, add 2.6 million tonnes of greenhouse gasses annually into the environment, according to a recent study by Stanford University. In India, LPG is widely used as cooking gas, which comprises 95 percent methane.

Gas stoves

In a recent study published in Environmental Science & Technology, researchers from Stanford University found that in the US, gas stoves are constantly leaking methane, a harmful greenhouse gas, even when they are not running.

It was found that they release about 2.6 million tonnes of methane into the environment each year, which is equivalent to the greenhouse gasses that 500,000 cars release annually, as reported by CBS news.

To reduce methane leakage, the surface of the burners should be cleaned regularly and the burner caps should be kept centred and well-seated.

Toothpaste

Many toothpaste brands may contain plastic microbeads. These microbeads are a leading contributor to the 8 million tonnes of plastic that ends up in the ocean every year. Microbeads are non-biodegradable and too small to be filtered in the clean-up processes. They attract toxic chemicals as they travel through the waters and have devastating effects on wildlife and the marine environment. These microscopic beads are also found in various shower gels and cosmetic products. Microbeads have been banned in the US, Canada, and the UK; other countries in Europe are expected to do so soon.

Tea bags

Traditional paper teabags contain elements of plastic. Manufacturers are increasingly using new formulas based on nylon or polyethylene terephthalate (PET) as they are supposed to offer a better brew quality and taste. But these teabags do not compost well and there are concerns about them releasing toxic chemicals.

Razors

Razors have a high carbon footprint as their production requires the use of steel, plastic, and high amounts of water. An estimated 2 billion razors are discarded each year in the US alone, according to CNN. Thus, electric, straight razors, and long-lasting razors are a better option for providing a smooth glow and keeping the environment safe.

Adhesive tape

Something as small as a piece of tape is not expected to have a major impact on the environment, but when the numbers pile up, these tiny pieces made of synthetic resins and plastic films contribute to major greenhouse gas emissions. In addition, the sticky gum residue from these tapes interferes with the recycling process. According to stacker.com, as a better alternative, some tapes (such as masking tape and cellophane) are becoming compostable to help reduce the carbon footprint.

Laundry detergents

Detergents that contain phosphate are harmful to the environment, particularly aquatic life. These phosphates pollute the water and lead to massive algae blooms. Algae blooms cover large areas of water and deplete oxygen and block sunlight, suffocating fish and other marine life. To make matters worse, detergents also contain surfactants, chemicals that clean dirt from clothing but contribute to marine destruction. To reduce the damage, phosphate-free options are available in the market.

Vegetable oil

Vegetable oil can potentially cause similar environmental effects as petroleum oils. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, USA, these can devastatingly coat animals and plants with oil and suffocate them by oxygen depletion. Vegetable oils can also clog water treatment plants and further damage habitats and food supplies to aquatic life, stacker.com reported.

Laptops and cellphones

Smartphones and laptops harm the environment the most. Huge amounts of resources such are rare metals, plastics, and energy are required to produce them. They also contain toxins such as mercury, lead, chromium, and other heavy metals, according to SFGate.com. The safe disposal of these electronic items has become an alarming issue for the entire world. These items mostly end up in landfills due to poor waste management. There they have the potential to pollute the soil and groundwater.

Jeans

Jeans or denims take tonnes of water to produce. Just one pair requires approximately 2,900 gallons of water, according to a report by Insider. This number is mind-boggling when we consider that one in nine people worldwide does not have access to safe water. Therefore, donating old pairs of jeans or upcycling them is becoming increasingly important.

Tampons and sanitary pads

Most feminine hygiene products create non-biodegradable by-products. According to Julie Weigaard Kjaer, CEO and co-founder of Ruby Cup, a tampon can take about 500 years to decompose and a menstrual pad contains the same amount of plastic as four single-use plastic bags, says the report by BestLife.

An average person may use up to 12,000 of these products in their lifetime, she said.

Therefore, the use of menstrual cups and period underwear is being encouraged around the world.

Gurugram building collapse: Death toll at 2; construction firm’s MD booked

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

Police have booked the builder of Chintels Paradiso and the construction contractor for negligence, while the district administration has ordered an inquiry into the matter.

Two people died after a portion of a roof of a residential complex in Gurugram collapsed on February 10. Officials said the dining room floor of a sixth-floor apartment at Chintels Paradiso in Gurugram Sector 109 first came down, triggering the collapse of roofs and floors directly under it, till the first floor.

Police have booked the builder of Chintels Paradiso and the construction contractor for negligence, while the district administration has ordered an inquiry into the matter. After residents staged a protest over the incident, the gates of the housing complex were sealed by police.

While Ekta Bhardwaj (31) died last night, the body of Sunita Srivastava was recovered on Friday, officials said, adding that operations by rescue personnel at the incident site are still on. Sunita Srivastava’s husband, Arun Kumar Srivastava, who got trapped under the debris, has been hospitalised, they said.

The builder and the construction contractor have been booked on a complaint lodged by Ekta Bhardwaj’s husband Rajesh Bharadwaj, the officials said.
Gurugram Deputy Commissioner Nishant Kumar Yadav said,” A special inquiry team has been constituted and it will look into the allegations of negligence. Rescue operations are underway.”

Teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) are carrying out rescue works. Earth-moving machines and a fire brigade vehicle with an elevated platform have deployed.
Rajesh Bharadwaj, a resident of Block-D of the complex, said, “I got a call from my son who said that the ceiling of some floors of our tower has collapsed. My wife suffered injuries and passed away around 7 pm.”

“This incident happened due to negligence and substandard construction done by MD (managing director) of Chintels group Ashok Saloman and the contractor. There could be more fatalities,” Rajesh Bharadwaj said in his complaint.

Deputy Commissioner of Police Deepak Saharan said, “FIR has been registered and probe is on. Action will be taken as per the law.”

The builder and construction contractor have been booked under Indian Penal Code sections 304A (causing death by negligence) and 34 (common intention) at the Bajghera police station.

Deputy Commissioner Yadav had told reporters on Thursday that construction work was underway on the sixth floor when the floor collapsed. He said the third to sixth floors of the building were vacant and people lived on the first and second floors.

Residents said Tower D, which collapsed, was built in 2018, and the complex has three other towers. The 18-floor Tower D has four-bedroom apartments.

The housing complex management has blamed the disaster on “negligence” during repairs. “Upon preliminary investigations, we have come to know that some negligence in repair work done by the contractor in an apartment led to this incident,” it said, offering condolences to the” affected families”.

The management said it is cooperating fully with the authorities.

Storyboard18 | An epic family feud is brewing in Mondelez

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

Storyboard18: This Valentine’s Day, Mondelez has executed two entirely different campaigns for its brands – Cadbury Silk and 5 Star, controlling the war-on-love narrative.

It’s that time of the year again when lovestruck couples paint the town pink and singles scoff at the mush in the air.

Mondelez India has smartly strategised to cater to both kinds of customers this Valentine’s Day. The chocolate maker has executed two contrasting campaigns for its two brands Cadbury Silk and 5 Star, catering to couples and singles, respectively, while pitting the two brands against each other.

Conceptualised by creative agency Ogilvy India, the Cadbury Dairy Milk Silk campaign #HowFarWillYouGotToMakeThemBlush leverages digital to create special curated messages for its customers. The ads let consumers know that they can create special messages for their loved one. While the 5 Star Valentine’s Day Alibi ad shows a young man giving excuses to leave the city to avoid the V-Day mess and mush. He has the perfect answer to all those intrusive questions about plans for Valentine’s Day.

ALSO READ | Backstory: When Cadbury battled Nestle over the Colour Purple

The alibi is an island called ‘My Cousin’s Wedding’. An idyllic escape with no mobile signal. Mondelez even built a faux embassy where they process the visas to visit My Cousin’s Wedding.

The company has created special scannable 5 Star packs, giving consumers a chance to win a holiday. So far, there have been a total of 66,689 pack scans. The campaign has delivered 179 million reach on social media (Facebook and Instagram) with 471 million impressions. On Google, it has garnered 100 million reach, 116 million impressions and 22 million views till date.

Blush and Mush

For its Silk campaign, Mondelez, which targets Gen Z (born after 2005) consumers, has leveraged real-time personalisation of augmented reality to create an experience.

The brand also added a crimson blush to the season of love by moulding the same proposition and further aiding young ones to express their deepest feelings with a new era of Heart Pop — a strawberry-flavoured heart pop.

Zenobia Pithawalla, senior executive creative director and Mihir Chanchani, executive creative director from Ogilvy India, said “We knew that most romances in our target audiences of teenagers are secret romances. So, this Valentine’s Day we decided to help young lovers in India shout out their love for their loved ones and yet keep it a secret from prying eyes.”

For Cadbury Silk Secret Messages, the brand partnered with tech firm 8th Wall which used personalised AR to turn every Silk hoarding, bus shelter, poster, press ad and POS material into a personalised secret message between lovers, which only they can see.

So far, 11.61 lakh secret messages video cards have been created on the Silk website and other partner platforms like Jio, Paytm, etc. The campaign has delivered 156 million reach on Instagram and 222 million impressions. On Google, it has garnered 110 million reach, 156 million impressions and over 30 million views.

Never go against the family

Anil Viswanathan, vice president — marketing, Mondelez India tells Storyboard18 that after Diwali, Valentine’s Day is the biggest consumption occasion for the company.

“The consumer insight is there are singles who don’t want to go out and chill and Netflix. That cohort exists and it will not be swayed by anything that Silk is doing, the objective is that they look at 5 Star and say ‘wow, what a great 5 Star ad”. In that sense, it is a complimentary audience that we are seeing. Singles will relate to the 5 Star ad and find it cool,” he explains.

ALSO READ | Why India is a ‘frustrating’ market for Netflix

Vishwanathan clarifies that the 5 Star ad does not neutralise what Silk is doing because it is speaking to different cohorts all together by providing a counter view. “….therefore, 5 Star is reaching out to an incremental audience. The conflict could have happened if one of the brands claims that it is better than the other. Since both the brands have reasonable awareness when you tag to each other one gets incremental reach,” he adds.

Controlling the war-on-love narrative

During Valentine’s Day promotions, multiple brands from cola’s to snack brands tend to tap into the occasion often targeting their communication towards singles who often feel left out.

“The reality is any other brand can take this space and speak to consumers who are single. It could be a chips, beverage brand. In the past, we have also seen some of the competitor brands also take pot shots at us. It is always good to build those points of view internally rather than let competition take away that space,” Vishwanathan notes.

Nitin Sharma, vice president, Infectious Advertising believes that what Cadbury’s has done for Valentine’s Day this year, works at multiple levels. According to him different brands in the Cadbury portfolio cater to different consumer segments and the campaign acknowledges that.

“…there are different kinds of people in the world – those in a relationship and those who’re not and cleverly furthers the brand propositions of respective brands “Silk – How far would you go for love” and “5 star – Do nothing”, against the backdrop of the festival of love. Placing these contrasting messages on adjacent outdoor sites, is a quirky innovation that brings to life the contradictions of our times, while bringing a smile to our faces,” he notes.

Corporate travel still below pre-COVID but retail travel bookings up 20%: Lemon Tree Hotels

Lemon Tree Hotels saw a recovery in quarter three after a lacklustre year due to the coronavirus pandemic. To discuss Q3 numbers and business outlook CNBC-TV18 spoke to Patanjali Keswani, Chairman and Managing Director of the company.

Corporate travel, which is a big pool for the hotel business, is 30 percent of the total basket currently this is still lower than pre-COVID levels. However, retail travel has been the saviour for the industry seeing a spurt of approximately 20 percent.

“Corporate travel typically was about 45 percent of our business. Today it is about 30 percent. But retail, which used to be about 1,200 rooms a day today is 1800 rooms a day for us in the owned portfolio, I am not talking managed hotels, which means the rate of growth of retail travellers, which incidentally is the highest rate that has grown by 50 percent.”

The resort business has done better than the hotel business and Lemon Tree acknowledged this.

“Since we started our management of other hotels, we do have a fairly large portfolio of resorts and it is true resorts are doing better than business hotels,” Keswani said.

National Aluminium Company (NALCO) Chairman and Managing Director (MD) Sridhar Patra on Friday said that the metal prices will continue to remain higher.

In an interview to CNBC-TV18, Patra said, “The metal (aluminium) price is around USD 3,000 per tonne and we are quite confident that this price will prevail and we will get better margin in Q4 (FY22).”

Talking about cash reserves, he said they will be used for dividend payout and capex plans. “Cash will be used as equity funding for the ongoing capacity expansion and we have also paid interim dividend; the first dividend of Rs 2 per share and a second interim dividend of Rs 3 per share; both work out to Rs 5 per share… So the cash reserve will be utilised for dividend payment and investment in the ongoing business,” said Patra.
