Positive on financials, real estate and consumption sector: Bernstein

It was a muted Friday for the bulls, but this week saw the markets end in the green. Sensex and Nifty Bank hit fresh highs while all sectoral indices except realty and energy ended higher.

On this week’s edition of the Editors’ Roundtable, the spotlight is on the midcap underperformance, take stock of this year’s IPOs and ask whether the December cheer will continue.

Speaking about sectors and stocks Venugopal Garre, Managing Director at Bernstein, said, “In the context of India financial sector is seeing a lot of interest. Also, there is a belief that the real estate cycle will strengthen in India from here and hence, one should look for opportunities and that is another sector where we saw a lot of interest.”

He added, “We have been arguing against consumption slowdown and potential risks to consumption. I didn’t really see investors being that negative. So I will probably sound out these two areas as where I probably still saw relatively higher interest.”

On the manufacturing sector Garre said, “From a long-term or medium-term thinking perspective, I think more or less people are convinced globally that India would be one of the alternatives outside of China for manufacturing.”

FIFA World Cup 2022: Iran net two goals deep in added time to leave Wales in tatters

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

Wales had keeper Wayne Hennessey sent off for a challenge on Iran striker Mehdi Taremi. Then in the 8th minute of the added time Iran substitute Rouzbeh Cheshmi found the net and Ramin Rezaeian sealed the win with only seconds left on the clock. The win for Iran took them to second place in Group B while Wales dropped to the fourth spot in the group. Iran’s final group game is against the USA while Wales will face England in their final group-stage fixture.

Iran scored twice in the final moments of stoppage time to keep alive their hopes of reaching the World Cup knockout stages for the first time with a thrilling last-gasp victory over a stunned 10-man Wales.

The two sides locked horns in a Group B fixture at the Ahmed bin Ali Stadium on Friday.

Iran had dominated the proceedings for the majority of the first half yet Wales prevented the Asian team to score a goal but neither did they score either.

Iran were the stronger of the two teams in the second half too but the goals did not come for them for all their efforts.

The drama started in the 86th minute when  Wales had keeper Wayne Hennessey sent off for a challenge on Iran striker Mehdi Taremi. A counter-attack by Iran found Taremi alone inside the Welsh as he looked to bury a goal.

But Hennessey came rushing out some 40 yards from the line and had a high kick land on Taremi. Hennessey was first shown the yellow card for his foul on Taremi but after a VAR check, the referee overturned his initial call and showed Hennessey the red card.

The red card took put 10-man Wales under pressure and gave Iran momentum late in the match.

Then in the 8th minute of the added time Iran substitute Rouzbeh Cheshmi found the net and Ramin Rezaeian sealed the win with only seconds left on the clock.

Iran had come out fighting in the second half and hit the post twice in a matter of seconds, with Sardar Azmoun’s shot rebounding to Ali Gholizadeh, whose follow-up cannoned off the upright and back to the waiting Azmoun, who headed tamely into keeper Hennessey’s hands.

Iran, whose World Cup squad has been distracted by a political crisis at home, had come close in the 72nd minute when Hennessey got a fingertip on Saeid Ezatolahi’s shot.

The win for Iran took them to second place in Group B while Wales dropped to the fourth spot in the group. Iran’s final group game is against the USA while Wales will face England in their final group-stage fixture.

PMLA case: HC judge recuses himself from hearing ED plea against Sanjay Raut’s bail

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

The ED had approached the HC seeking cancellation of bail granted to the Rajya Sabha MP and his aide by a special court on November 9. The Central probe agency had sought an interim stay on the bail order, which the HC had refused.

A single bench of the Bombay High Court on Friday recused itself from hearing the Enforcement Directorate’s plea seeking cancellation of bail granted to Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Raut and his aide Pravin Raut in a money laundering case.

The ED had approached the HC seeking cancellation of bail granted to the Rajya Sabha MP and his aide by a special court on November 9. The Central probe agency had sought an interim stay on the bail order, which the HC had refused.

On Friday, when the matter came up for hearing, the single bench of Justice M S Karnik said, “It would not be appropriate for me to take up this matter… not before me.” The matter will now be placed before a new bench.

Sanjay Raut was granted bail by special PMLA judge M G Deshpande, over 100 days after he was arrested in the money laundering case related to redevelopment of Patra Chawl (a chawl is a row of old tenements) in suburban Goregaon.

The special court, in its order, had termed the Rajya Sabha member’s arrest as “illegal, without reason and a witch-hunt”.

The ED, in its application, said the special court order was bad in law and deserves to be set aside. It also claimed the special court had failed to appreciate the evidence submitted in the case against the accused persons.

“The special court failed to appreciate the offence of money laundering is a grave economic offence, which is committed by well-planned conspiracy and is as heinous, if not more, than an act of murder or terrorism,” the ED said.

Mutual fund unitholders will now get dividends in 7 days, redemptions in 3-5 days

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

SEBI on Friday cut the timelines for the payout of redemption and dividend proceeds to unitholders by asset management companies (AMCs).

SEBI on Friday cut the timelines for the payout of redemption amount and dividend to unitholders by asset management companies (AMCs). In a circular on November 25, the capital market regulator has reduced the timeline for dividends payout to seven working days from the current 15 days.

It said that the record date would be two working days from the issue of public notice, wherever applicable, for the purpose of payment of dividend.

“The payment of dividend to the unitholders shall be made within seven working days from the record date,” the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) said. It has further reduced the timeline for redemption payout to three working days from the existing 10 working days.

“The transfer of redemption or repurchase proceeds to the unitholders shall be made within three working days from the date of redemption or repurchase,” SEBI said.

Also read: SEBI amends norms to bring in buying, selling of mutual funds under insider trading rules

For schemes investing at least 80 percent of total assets in such permissible overseas investments, the transfer of redemption or repurchase proceeds to the unitholders would be made within five working days from the date of redemption or repurchase.

In consultation with SEBI, industry body Association of Mutual Funds in India (AMFI) would publish a list of exceptional circumstances for schemes unable to transfer redemption or repurchase proceeds to investors within the prescribed time, along with applicable time frame for transfer of redemption or repurchase proceeds to the unitholders in such exceptional circumstances. The list would be published within 30 days.

The regulator said that interest for the period of delay in transfer of redemption or repurchase or dividend would be payable to unitholders at the rate of 15 percent per annum along with the proceeds of redemption or repurchase or dividend, as the case may be. Such interest would be borne by AMCs and the details of such payments would be sent to SEBI as part of Compliance Test Reports.

14 years since 26/11 Mumbai Attack: Security measures taken by India to fight terrorism

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

It has been 14 years since India’s financial capital, Mumbai, was struck by a gruesome terrorist attack on November 26, 2008, and the horrendous attacks inflicted deep scars on the psyche of every Indian. Till November 2021, more than 300 coastal security exercises were conducted with state authorities by the Indian Coast Guard since the 26/11 attack.

It has been 14 years since India’s financial capital, Mumbai, was struck by a gruesome terrorist attack on November 26, 2008, and the horrendous attacks inflicted deep scars on the psyche of every Indian. Ten dreadful terrorists belonging to the Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) terror outfit, unleashed hours of carnage in which 166 innocent people lost their lives.

In the aftermath of the 26/11 Mumbai attack, the Indian government has taken several steps to put an anti-terror security framework in place. The attacks, which lasted for almost four days, exposed several gaping loopholes in India’s security apparatus. Then Union Home Minister P Chidambaram, who took over the office immediately after the terror strike, introduced an ambitious programme to overhaul the country’s internal security apparatus.

The 26/11 attackers, all Pakistani nationals, had reached Mumbai via the sea route from Karachi across the Arabian Sea. They had hijacked an Indian fishing trawler Kuber, and forced its captain to sail to Mumbai. The ease with which the LeT attackers had reached Mumbai exposed India’s incompetence to protect its coastal cities.

Also Read: Key conspirators of 26/11 terror attacks continue to remain protected: Jaishankar at UNSC panel meeting

The 26/11 attacks led to the transformation of the management of India’s coastal and maritime security. The government took bold measures for the better vigilance of India’s sprawling coastline which included the raising of Sagar Prahari Bal (SPB) and the induction of fast interceptor crafts (FIC). Till November 2021, more than 300 coastal security exercises were conducted with state authorities by the Indian Coast Guard since the 26/11 attack.

Sea Vigil, the extensive coastal defence exercise conceptualised in 2018, is being carried out since 2019 by the Indian Navy in coordination with the Indian Coast Guard and agencies involved in the tasks of maritime activities.

The Union government passed the NIA Act, of 2008 and created the National Investigation Agency (NIA). The government gave this agency the mandate to investigate and prosecute terrorism-related cases affecting the sovereignty, security and integrity of the country.

Also Read: Zero-tolerance policy, use of technology — How PM Modi hopes to combat terrorism

Most importantly, Mumbai Police is now much better prepared to tackle a terror attack of this scale. Mumbai Police now has improved systems, training and weaponry. Their coordination with other security agencies is also far better today.

India’s intelligence-sharing with premier western agencies like the FBI and MI6 has become better than it was in 2008. Now India can expect timely actionable intelligence well before a dastardly terror attack.

India’s counter-terrorism capabilities have also now improved by leaps and bounds. National Security Guard (NSG) hubs have been set up in different states in order to ensure a rapid response to terror attacks.

Delhi excise case: CBI files chargesheet against seven accused, Manish Sisodia exempted

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia, named in the CBI FIR, does not figure in the present charge sheet which is filed within 60 days of the probe agency taking the investigation.

The CBI on Friday filed its first charge sheet against seven accused, including two arrested businessmen, in the Delhi Excise policy scam case, officials said. Besides the two arrested businessmen, those named in the charge sheet include the head of a news channel, a Hyderabad-based liquor businessman, a Delhi-based liquor distributor and two officials of the excise department, they said.

Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia, named in the CBI FIR, does not figure in the present charge sheet which is filed within 60 days of the probe agency taking the investigation.

The accused have been charged under IPC section 120-B (criminal conspiracy) and provisions of bribery under the Prevention of Corruption Act, officials said.

The agency has kept the probe open related to the role of others, broader conspiracy with licensees, the money trail, cartelisation, and larger conspiracy in framing and executing the controversial excise policy in the national capital which was rolled back.

The central probe agency has got an alleged ”close associate” of Sisodia — Dinesh Arora — to spill beans by turning approver in the case, they said.

Arora recorded his statement under section 164 of CrPC before the magistrate and was granted a pardon by a special court for helping in the investigation.

The CBI, after registering a case against 15 people in August this year had carried out searches at various places.

It is alleged the Delhi Government’s policy to grant licenses to liquor traders was influenced in favour of certain dealers who had allegedly paid bribes for it, a charge strongly refuted by Delhi’s ruling Aam Aadmi Party, they said.

Also read: ABG Shipyard fraud case: CBI files charge sheet against ex-chairman Rishi Agarwal, 24 others

Besides Sisodia, who holds the excise portfolio in the Delhi government, the CBI has named the then excise commissioner Arava Gopi Krishna, the then deputy excise commissioner Anand Kumar Tiwari, assistant excise commissioner Pankaj Bhatnagar, nine businessmen and two companies as accused in the case.

The agency has alleged that Sisodia and other accused public servants recommended and took decisions pertaining to the Delhi Excise Policy 2021-22 without the approval of competent authority with ”an intention to extend undue favours to the licensees post tender”.

The agency alleged Amit Arora, Director of Buddy Retail Pvt Limited in Gurgaon, Dinesh Arora and Arjun Pandey are ”close associates” of Sisodia and were ”actively involved in managing and diverting the undue pecuniary advantage collected from liquor licensees” for the accused public servants.

The CBI has alleged that Radha Industries managed by Dinesh Arora received Rs 1 crore from Sameer Mahendru of Indospirits

G20: First tourism meeting to be held in Gujarat’s Rann of Kutch

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

Union Tourism Secretary Arvind Singh on Tuesday said about 75-100 delegates, including both from India and foreign countries, are expected to take part in the main event that will be hosted from February 7-9.

Stage is set for the first G20 meeting under the tourism track in Gujarat’s picturesque Runn of Kutch, with the main conference planned to be hosted at Dhordo tent city early February, and delegates will also visit the UNESCO heritage site of Dholavira and a memorial in Bhuj built after the deadly 2001 earthquake.

Union Tourism Secretary Arvind Singh said about 75-100 delegates, including both from India and foreign countries, are expected to take part in the main event that will be hosted from February 7-9.

“The Union tourism minister, Gujarat chief minister and some central ministers will participate in the event. The Dhordo tent city village site is the venue for the main event. All preparations have been done, and we are getting good response from delegates from foreign countries and members of some of the international institutions who will also take part in it,” he said in response to a PTI query on the sidelines of an event.

Union Tourism Minister G Kishan Reddy on Tuesday launched the Visit India Year 2023 campaign to encourage inbound travel to the country which is currently chairing the G20.

This year is very crucial for India as it chairs G20, and over 200 meetings will take place at 55 locations, and “over one lakh foreign delegates will visit India this year”, he said after launching the Tourism Ministry’s campaign and its logo.

“Our endeavour will be to showcase our destinations, monuments, culture, festivals to the visiting delegates. A lot of events will be held across India from tourism point of view. Each foreign delegate should return as a cultural ambassador of India, this kind of environment be created, is the vision of our PM,” Reddy said.

Some departments have started preparatory meetings for the G20 events, and ministerial meeting for the tourism sector will be held in Goa, he said, adding that efforts are being made to work with Indian missions abroad also so as to boost foreign tourism in India.

The Union tourism secretary said while the first working group meet under the tourism track is all set to take place in Runn of Kutch, the second one will be hosted in Siliguri in West Bengal in April, “the third meeting will be held in May in a place in north India”, and the fourth one will be held in Goa.

Officials had earlier said that the third meeting will be held in Srinagar, but the tourism secretary said, “We are yet to decide on the place for the third meet, but it will be hosted somewhere in the hills on north India”.

After the working group meet, the ministerial meet will take place in Goa, he added.

On the first meet slated to be held in Runn of Kutch, famed for its pristine white desert and tent city in Dhordo, Singh said besides the main event at the tent city, two side events would also be hosted.

“On February 7, one side event will be on rural tourism, to be held in Dhordo only, during which delegates will share their views. Then on February 9, they will visit Dholavira, a Harappan-era site and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. And, there will be event on archaeological tourism,” he said.

And, on February 10, the delegates will visit the Smriti Van memorial in Bhuj that has been built after the devastating 2001 earthquake.

“The memorial offers a simulative experience and visitors in a way can feel the impact,” he said.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi in August last year had inaugurated Smriti Van memorial, which celebrates the resilience shown by people during the devastating 2001 earthquake in the Kutch region of Gujarat.

The grand structure, which is the first such memorial in the country according to a Gujarat government official, is spread over 470 acres on Bhujio Hill near Bhuj town.

It celebrates the spirit of resilience in the wake of the death of nearly 13,000 people during the earthquake on January 26, 2001, which had its epicentre in Bhuj.

The memorial carries names of the people who lost their lives during the earthquake. It also has a state-of-the-art Smriti Van Earthquake Museum.

The Union tourism secretary said there has been “good response from foreign countries’ delegates” on the tourism-track meetings.

India assumed the presidency of the influential bloc on December 1, setting the tone for the Tourism Ministry’s calendar this year.

More than 200 meetings will be held across 55 locations, culminating with the annual G20 summit on September 9-10.

The Tourism Ministry is geared up to put its best foot forward and showcase to the guests from different countries the cultural heritage and culinary delights of India Singh said, besides the four tourism track meetings, a global investors conference is slated to be held in April.

Also, an international MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conference and Exhibitions) convention will be hosted in May in Bangalore, and an adventure tourism event is also planned. And, at each G20 meeting, World Travel and Trade Council (WTTC) organises a global CEO’s forum, so that forum will be held in Goa before the ministerial meeting, he added.

Seven people have been arrested for allegedly using the image of Serum Institute of India CEO Adar Poonawalla and getting a director of the leading vaccine-producing firm to transfer Rs 1.01 crore to various bank accounts, Pune police said on Friday.

As per the First Information Report registered with Bundgarden police station in the second week of September, the accused had used Poonawalla’s image in a Whatsapp account and sent messages about money transfer to Satish Deshpande, one of the directors of the firm, an official said.

Believing the messages were from Poonawalla, the director transferred Rs 1.01 crore of the firm’s funds to eight bank accounts mentioned in the Whatsapp conversation, he said.

FIFA World Cup 2022: Favourites France take on dark horses Denmark in a mouthwatering clash

Summary

Defending champions France will gear up for the second round of fixtures as they face dark horses Denmark in the FIFA World Cup 2022 Group D encounter in Qatar at Stadium 974 on Saturday, November 26. A goalless draw between Denmark and Tunisia during the first round of fixtures means that Les Bleus are only one win away from securing the knockout round berth. On the other hand, Denmark would enjoy being the reason behind another upset at the World Cup, but that does look unlikely.

In their last game, France walloped Australia 4-1. The Socceroos did put up a fight as they drew first blood within nine minutes. However, Les Bleus should were calm and composed even after trailing early on. Olivier Giroud bagged a brace that also saw him become the joint-top scorer of France, tied at the top with Thierry Henry. Both Giroud and Henry have scored 51 goals for Les Bleus and the former will be looking to become the outright leading goal scorer of the nation against Denmark.

Apart from Olivier Giroud, quite a few players caught the eye of spectators. Midfielder Adrien Rabiot got his name on the score sheet and also assisted Giroud’s goal. 22-year-old Aurelien Tchouameni finished the game with a passing accuracy of 96 percent. A stellar performance by the French duo in midfield ensured that the absence of N’Golo Kante and Paul Pogba does not affect the side.

Out in front, attackers Ousmane Dembele and Kylian Mbappe combined to score France’s third goal of the match. The only negative for Les Bleus in the last match must be the injury to left-back Lucas Hernandez. The 26-year-old was substituted just 13 minutes into the game as his brother, Theo Hernandez, came on to replace him. Less than 15 minutes after coming on, Theo assisted the first goal that was scored by Rabiot.

Coach Didier Deschamps is surely pleased with his side’s performance, and he will surely field an almost unchanged eleven against Denmark.

Check: FIFA World Cup 2022 Points Table

Denmark will be looking at the history books and making themselves realise that beating France is possible for them. The Red and Whites have not lost against France this year. The Danes did the double over France in the UEFA Nations League in June and then in September this year. Even in the World Cup, Denmark beat Les Bleus in 2002. Interestingly, France were the defending champions back then.

Chances of lightning striking twice will be bleak as Kasper Hjulmand tries to fix what is wrong in his side and get them ready for this crucial tie. The Red and Whites rely on Christian Eriksen for creativity and in their last match, the midfielder did everything he could. The 30-year-old created the most chances of the match after creating five. Eriksen’s passing accuracy was at 91%

The defensive trio of Joachim Andersen, Simon Kjaer, and Andreas Christensen can prove to be a nightmare for attackers. Against France, the two wing-backs, Rasmus Kristensen and Joakim Maehle, are likely to drop a tad deeper to make it a five-man defensive line. Hjulmand could be content with France having the ball and Denmark going out looking for something on the counters.

Team News: France could be without Lucas Hernandez and probably even Kingsley Coman, who has a slight niggle. Denmark don’t have any injury concerns.
