Carbon dioxide emissions reached a record high in 2022

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

The IEA’s detailed fuel-by-fuel and region-by-region analysis incorporates the recent official national statistics and data that is publicly-available on energy use, weather and economic indicators.

Global carbon dioxide emissions from industrial processes and energy combustion increased to a record high of 36.8 gigatonne (GT) in 2022. According to the International Energy Association’s recent report, the CO2 emissions increased by 0.9 percent or 321 metric tonne in 2022.

The IEA’s detailed fuel-by-fuel and region-by-region analysis incorporates the recent official national statistics and data that is publicly-available on energy use, weather and economic indicators.

It is important to note that in 2020, during the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, emissions reduced by over 5 percent due to a cut in energy demand. The following year, emissions rebounded past the pre-pandemic levels, and grew over 6 percent, in line with economic stimulus and the vaccines being rolled out.

In 2022, carbon dioxide emissions from energy combustion increased by around 1.3 percent or 423 MT, whereas emissions from industrial processes fell by 102 MT, the report stated.

“Emissions growth in 2022 was below global GDP growth (+3.2 percent), reverting to a decades-long trend of decoupling emissions and economic growth that was broken in 2021,” the report stated.

According to the report, the emissions from the emerging markets in Asia as well as developing economies, excluding China, increased more than the emissions from any other region last year. These same emissions increased by 4.2 percent or 206 MT. It said that more than half of the increase in emissions in the region were from coal-fired power generation.

Another key highlight from the report was that emissions from natural gas decreased by 1.6 percent or 118 MT, following the sanctions on Russia after its invasion of Ukraine. “Reductions in emissions from gas were particularly pronounced in Europe,” the report stated.

Maharashtra ministers to meet protesting farmer leaders tomorrow

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

The development came a day after the Maharashtra government invited the leaders and representatives of the protesting farmers for a meeting at 3 pm on Tuesday.

Amid the ongoing farmers protest over falling onion prices in parts of Maharashtra, Nashik Guardian Minister Dadaji Bhuse said state government’s ministers are likely to meet the representatives of the protesting farmers on Wednesday.

The statement came hours after the leaders of All India Kisan Sabha (AIKS), the banner under which the farmers in Maharashtra are protesting, alleged that the Maharashtra government called off the negotiation meeting with their leader which was scheduled to take place on Tuesday.

The Maharashtra government had invited the leaders and representatives of the protesting farmers for a meeting at 3 pm on Tuesday. The delegation was scheduled to go to Mumbai to meet Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and other ministers of the state government.

Farmers started a protest march from Nashik to Mumbai on Monday in protest against the crashing prices of onion and other crops. Thousands of fathers had gathered to demand reforms in the agricultural sector and tribal land acquisitions.

Farmers in Maharashtra have been demanding higher prices for prices of crops such as onion tomatoes, fenugreek leaves, coriander leaves and Cauliflower. The surplus of Kharif and Kharif onion crops has led to a significant drop in crop prices.

The surge in supply ahead of schedule has sent prices crashing down to between Rs 7 and Rs 2 per kilo, depending on the quality.

ALSO READ | Why crop prices are dropping significantly and How much damage has been caused?

Besides this, thousands of hectares of land have been damaged due to unseasonal rains, adding to the farmers’ woes.

Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis informed on Monday that the preliminary information revealed that around 13,729 hectares have been damaged so far due to unseasonal rains. As per the Maharashtra government, crops in eight districts spread over 13,729 hectares are damaged.

Distressed by the sudden and sharp drop in onion prices and the alleged failure of the government to provide timely relief, farmers across the onion belt are finding it difficult to transport the crop even to Lasalgaon, Asia’s biggest wholesale onion market.

To help farmers, the central government has also taken steps to help farmers. NAFED, the central government agency in charge of agricultural procurement, has ramped up onion purchases to stabilise prices. However, many farmers said the action, which is already late, is not enough.

PM Kisan | 14th installment release date, process to check eligibility and more

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

PM Kisan: The government released the 13th installment of the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi (PM-KISAN) Yojana (Scheme) in February 2023 and now farmers are waiting for the next or 14th installment of the scheme.

The government is likely to release the 14th installment of the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi (PM-KISAN) Yojana (Scheme) between April 2023 and July 2023. However, there is no official announcement by the government regarding this. Under the PM-KISAN scheme, all landholding farmers’ families are provided the financial benefit of Rs 6,000 per annum, payable in three equal installments of Rs 2,000.

PM Kisan is a central sector scheme that provides income support to all landholding farmers’ families in the country to supplement their financial needs for procuring various inputs related to agriculture and allied activities as well as domestic needs. Under the scheme, the entire financial liability towards transfer of benefit to targeted beneficiaries is borne by the government.

All landholding farmers’ families, which have cultivable landholding in their names are eligible to get benefit under the scheme.

Eligible farmers can check the status with these steps:

Step 1: Visit pmkisan.gov.in

Step 2: Select the option ‘Beneficiary Status’ under the ‘Farmers Corner’ section on the home page

Step 3: Enter the registered Aadhaar number or bank account number.

Step 4: Click on ‘Get Data’

Step 5: The status of the installment will be displayed

Prime Minister Narendra Modi released the 13th installment of PM-KISAN Yojana (Scheme) in February. However, there may be instances when an eligible farmer may not receive the installment.

If that is the case, he/she can register the complain at the PM Kisan helpdesk. The helpline numbers are 011-24300606 and 155261. There’s also a toll free number available- 18001155266. Alternatively, farmer can email at pmkisan-ict@gov.in. or pmkisan-funds@gov.in in order to register grievances.

Before complaining, farmer should, however, check if his/her name is mentioned in the beneficiary list or not.

According to the PM Kisan documents, the beneficiaries, whose names are uploaded on the portal by the concerned state/UT governments in a particular 4-monthly period, shall be entitled to receive the benefit for that period with effect from that 4-monthly period itself.

“lf they do not receive the payment of installment pertaining to that 4-monthly period and subsequent installments for any reason, except due to rejection for falling within the exclusion criteria, they are entitled to receive the benefits of all the due installments as and when the cause of delay is removed/resolved,” the document read.

Oil prices fall as SVB collapse spooks financial markets

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

The sudden shutdown of SVB Financial triggered concerns about risks to other banks resulting from the US Federal Reserve’s sharp interest rate hikes over the last year.

Oil prices slipped on Tuesday, extending the previous day’s slide, as the collapse of Silicon Valley Bank startled equities markets and raised worries about a fresh financial crisis.

Brent crude futures fell 9 cents to $80.68 a barrel by 01:01 GMT. US West Texas Intermediate crude futures (WTI) dropped 16 cents to $74.64 a barrel. On Monday Brent fell to its lowest since early January, while WTI dropped to its lowest since December.

The sudden shutdown of SVB Financial triggered concerns about risks to other banks resulting from the US Federal Reserve’s sharp interest rate hikes over the last year. It also spurred speculation about whether the central bank could slow the pace of its monetary tightening.

US authorities launched emergency measures on Sunday to shore up confidence in the banking system after fears of contagion from the failure of Silicon Valley Bank led to a sell-off in US assets at the end of last week and state regulators closed New York-based Signature Bank on Sunday.

The dollar index, which measures the currency against six peers, rose on Tuesday after falling for three consecutive days – it hit a nearly one-month low on Monday. A weaker dollar makes oil cheaper for holders of other currencies and typically supports oil prices.

In US supply news, the American Petroleum Institute is expected to release industry data on US oil inventories on Tuesday.

Six analysts polled by Reuters estimated on average that crude inventories rose by about 600,000 barrels in the week to March 10.
