CUET-UG application deadline extended again, check new date here

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

The first deadline was March 26, which was initially extended to March 31. The exam is scheduled to be conducted from May 15 to 31.

The application deadline for Common University Entrance Test (CUET)-UG has been further extended till April 5, the National Testing Agency (NTA) announced on Sunday March 31. The first deadline was March 26, which was initially extended to March 31.

“The deadline for online submission of the application form for the CUET-UG 2024 has been extended up to 9:50 PM on April 5, 2024 based on the request received from candidates and other stakeholders,” said Sadhana Parashar, Senior Director (Exams), NTA.

“Candidates can also use school ID or any government ID with photograph to facilitate identification,” she added. The exam is scheduled to be conducted from May 15 to 31.

The standardised test was introduced in 2022 to streamline admission processes across central, state, deemed and private universities nationwide.

A notable departure from tradition, the National Testing Agency (NTA) has outlined a hybrid examination format for CUET-UG 2024, including both computer-based testing and pen-and-paper modes for different subjects.

Officials have indicated that subjects witnessing high registration volumes will adopt a pen-and-paper format using optical mark recognition (OMR), while others will remain computer-based.

In the previous cycle, approximately 14.9 lakh registrations were recorded for CUET-UG, highlighting its significance in the higher education landscape.

PM Modi at Meerut rally: Country has only seen trailer of development, making roadmap for next five years

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Summary

Addressing his first rally in Uttar Pradesh after the announcement of the Lok Sabha election schedule, PM Modi lauded Meerut as a land of “revolution and revolutionaries” that gave leaders like Chaudhary Charan Singh to the nation.

The 2024 Lok Sabha election is not just for making a government but to make a ‘Viksit Bharat’, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Sunday March 31, asserting that people have only seen a “trailer” of development and his government was preparing the roadmap for next five years.

Addressing his first rally in Uttar Pradesh after the announcement of the Lok Sabha election schedule, Modi lauded Meerut as a land of “revolution and revolutionaries” that gave leaders like Chaudhary Charan Singh to the nation.

“Our government has already started preparations for the third term. We are making a roadmap for the coming five years. Work is going on rapidly on what major decisions we have to take in the first 100 days. In the last 10 years, you have seen only a trailer of development, now we have to take the country much further,” he said.

The prime minister said he has lived in poverty and “that is why Modi understands very well the sorrow of every poor, the pain of every poor, the suffering of every poor”. “So I made schemes to address every concern of the poor. We have not only empowered the poor, but we have also given them back their self-respect,” Modi said.

Rashtriya Lok Dal president Jayant Chaudhary, who recently joined the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance, shared the dais with the prime minister at the rally. Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh Yogi Adityanath, Haryana CM Naib Singh Saini along with veteran actor Arun Govil of TV serial ‘Ramayan’ fame, who is the BJP candidate in the Meerut Lok Sabha seat, were present at the rally.

INDIA bloc leadership assemble at Ramlila Maidan in solidarity with Kejriwal, Soren

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

The rally is being held in the backdrop of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s arrest and allegations of misuse of agencies against the opposition by the BJP-led central government.

Top INDIA bloc leaders gathered at the Ramlila Maidan on Sunday March 31 to express solidarity with arrested Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and former Jharkhand CM Hemant Soren, and urged people to vote out the BJP in the Lok Sabha polls to “save democracy and the Constitution”.

The leaders who were on the stage at the ‘Loktantra Bachao’ (save democracy) rally included Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, former presidents Sonia and Rahul Gandhi; NCP’s Sharad Yadav, NC leader Farooq Abdullah, Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray; Left leaders Sitaram Yechury, D Raja, Dipankar Bhattacharya; Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav; RJD’s Tejashwi Yadav and TMC’s Derek O’Brien.

Chief Minister Kejriwal’s wife Sunita Kejriwal and JMM leader Hemant Soren’s wife Kalpana Soren also addressed the gathering, castigating the Central government over the arrest of their husbands in corruption cases. Sunita Kejriwal read out a letter from her husband which she said he sent from the Enforcement Directorate’s custody.

Thackeray alleged the country has become an “autocracy” under the Modi government, and appealed to the people to throw the BJP out of power. “We are not here for an election campaign, we are here to save democracy… what kind of government is this, you make allegations and send people to jail,” he said.

“Two of our sisters are fighting, how can the brother stay behind? So we are here for our sisters, Kalpana ji and Sunita ji. Not just we, the whole country is with you,” he said. Thackeray accused the BJP of misusing the ED, CBI and Income Tax Department, and said they should declare that these three agencies are their allies.

AAP Delhi state convener Gopal Rai said the Ramlila Maidan is a historic place which has changed the country’s history several times. “Whenever a crisis has arisen in the country, a voice of change has echoed from here.”

“If they (BJP) win the Lok Sabha elections, the country will face consequences. This is a do or die situation for all of us. Take leave from your work for the next two months and put all your efforts to save our democracy,” he said at the rally.

Delhi Congress chief Arvinder Singh Lovely said the Lok Sabha elections will decide the future of coming generations and what kind of a democracy they live in. “You arrest a sitting chief minister. You freeze the accounts of the biggest opposition party. What democracy is this? Shaheed Bhagat Singh did not sacrifice his life for this kind of democracy. The 2024 election is neither about AAP, Congress or INDIA bloc or those who discuss elections in their drawing rooms. This election will decide the future of our coming generations and what kind of a democracy they live in the future,” he said.

Kalpana Soren said she was present at the rally as the voice of “50% of the population of the country – the women – and the 9% tribal population. “We, the tribals, have a long story of struggle and sacrifices. We are proud of our history. The crowd is an evidence that the way autocratic forces are trying to attack democracy, this assembly has gathered against it,” she said.

All the guarantees provided by Babasaheb’s Constitution are being destroyed by the NDA government, she charged. “One by one they have demolished constitutional institutions.” She appealed to people to use their votes “wisely”.

As Sunita Kejriwal read out the letter sent by Arvind Kejriwal, people in the gathering listened to her with attention. “See her voice is shaking, while reading her husband’s letter. She is a true Bharatiya woman,” said Anit Devi, who was one among the crowd. An Aam Aadmi Party worker said it was very emotional moment for “all of us when Arvind’s wife was reading the letter”.

Every single person listened to all the six promises that Kejriwal wrote about in the letter very carefully and accepted them, said the party worker. Another party worker, Ram Kishan, said Kejriwal is in jail, but he is still only thinking about the people of the country. “Every single of them.”

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) batter Sameer Rizvi has thanked former skipper MS Dhoni for his terrific debut in the league in their previous clash against the Gujarat Titans (GT) at the MA Chidambaram Stadium earlier this week. Rizvi walked out and hammered Rashid Khan for a couple of maximums in his very first over, scoring 14 off six deliveries in a high-scoring clash.

“Bhaiya (Dhoni) told me to play how I generally play since it is all about the actual gameplay. He (Dhoni) said, ‘There is nothing different. Skills remain the same, and it’s all just about mindset. Never take any pressure or be nervous, and play as per the situation’,” he said in a video on IPLT20.com.

Rizvi fondly looked back at the time when CSK spent 8.4 crore to secure his services in the auction before this season held in Dubai in December. He mentioned that his biggest happiness upon this move was the fact that his dream to meet Dhoni would finally fructify.

“When I was picked up during the auction by CSK, my greatest happiness was my dream to meet Bhaiya (MS Dhoni) would be fulfilled. We also had net sessions together and got to learn a lot from him and the (support) staff. I intend to learn more and perform to the fullest.”

Rizvi will be hoping to get more batting time in the middle when CSK take on the Delhi Capitals (DC) at the ACA-VDCA Cricket Stadium in Vizag, with the five-time IPL champions chasing their third win in a row this season.

Summary

PBKS sat comfortably at 102/0 under 12 overs whilst chasing 200. But, Yadav took the key wicket of Jonny Bairstow to trigger their collapse in the second half of the innings. He took three wickets in exchange of 27 runs in his four-over spell with distinguished PBKS batters failing to tackle him with ease.

Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) Mayank Yadav rattled the Punjab Kings (PBKS) batters with his tearaway pace at the Ekana Sports City on Saturday. Yadav was acquired by LSG for 20 lakhs last season, but he didn’t play a single game after picking up an injury ahead of their opening fixture of the season.

His torn hamstring meant that he couldn’t give a good account of his prodigal promise last year. However, the match against PBKS ensured that the cricketing world got talking about about the latest speedster in town.

Summary

The appearance of the 75-year-old monarch is seen as an effort to reassure the public after Charles stepped back from public duties following an announcement by Buckingham Palace in early February that he was undergoing treatment for an unspecified type of cancer.

King Charles III is expected to join the queen and other members of the royal family for an Easter service at Windsor Castle on Sunday March 31 in what will be his most significant public appearance since he was diagnosed with cancer last month.

The appearance of the 75-year-old monarch is seen as an effort to reassure the public after Charles stepped back from public duties following an announcement by Buckingham Palace in early February that he was undergoing treatment for an unspecified type of cancer.

The service itself will be smaller than usual as Kate, the Princess of Wales, is also being treated for cancer and has paused public duties. The princess, her husband Prince William and their children won’t attend the service.

Kate shock’s announcement that she, too, had cancer was made on March 22, after weeks of speculation about her health and whereabouts following major abdominal surgery in February.

While the Easter service takes place in a chapel on the grounds of Windsor Castle, the news media will be able to observe the arrival of Charles and Queen Camilla.

Lot of ‘onion peeling’ for attaining global first: SEBI chief on T+0 settlements

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

Speaking at the annual convocation of the Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad (IIMA) on Saturday, Buch also said the current generation of Indians is on its way to seeing the ”high noon” of the new India.

Attaining the global first of T+0 settlement involved a lot of problem-solving and personal discomforts, SEBI chairperson Madhabi Puri Buch has said giving the analogy of ”onion peeling” for the achievement. Speaking at the annual convocation of the Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad (IIMA) on Saturday, Buch also said the current generation of Indians is on its way to seeing the ”high noon” of the new India.

”My colleagues often tell me that problem-solving with me is like peeling an onion. It makes everybody cry in the process. But by the time you are done, peeling layer after layer after layer of the onion, you suddenly realise there is no problem left,” she said while addressing students of IIMA as the chief guest of the 59th annual convocation. Stock exchanges BSE and NSE on Thursday launched the beta version of T+0, or same-day trade settlement on an optional basis for select stocks, which will offer investors an option to transact in 25 securities in T+0 settlement.

”When India became the first large market in the world to move to T+1 settlement, and just two days ago when we went live with an optional T+0 settlement, the process felt pretty much the same–lots of onion peeling happened to make for a global first,” Buch said. Notably, Buch is the first woman to head the capital markets regulator-Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI).

Buch said she doggedly followed the mantra of doing what is right, no matter how hard, and leaving no stone unturned, no matter how hard. ”I believe that at a conscious and a subconscious level, my mantra has been very very simple. Do the right thing, no matter how hard. Leave no stone unturned, no matter how hard. The wonderful thing about this mantra is that eight times out of ten you actually succeed. And the two times that you don’t, you have absolutely no regret,” she added.

Buch further said the graduates will discover their own mantra for going forward, which will be the ”default setting” within which it is effortless for them to operate. ”And until you find that mantra, it is as though you have a quiver full of arrows, some sharp, some not so sharp. And as you aim for the goals that you choose, you may find that your sharp arrows were perfectly well, wonderful, or that you need to sharpen some of your arrows,” the SEBI chief said.

She also asked students to not overthink if it feels effortless and enjoyable in their journey. ”Just go with the flow,” she added.

Buch, however, suggested students probe the nature of their mantra if they face a dilemma about the direction they are taking and whether their mantra is a match for the goals that they are aiming for. ”In today’s multi-dimensional and multi-varied world, there is an infinite set of combinations of which mantra can help you achieve which goal. You just need to make sure that you find a fit at a point in time,” she said.

Buch said her generation was very fortunate to participate in the dawn of the new India. ”Your generation, in my view, is even more fortunate. You are on your way to seeing the high noon of the new India,” she added.

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

IOCL said in a statement that the JV was formed in anticipation of expanding demand for batteries for two-and three-wheel vehicles and energy storage systems in the Indian market.

State-owned Indian Oil Corporation Ltd. (IOCL) and Panasonic Group Company Panasonic Energy on Sunday (March 31) announced that they have signed a binding term sheet to draw a framework for formation of a joint venture (JV) for manufacturing cylindrical lithium-ion cells in India.

IOCL said in a statement that the JV was formed in anticipation of expanding demand for batteries for two-and three-wheel vehicles and energy storage systems in the Indian market.

“This signing of binding term sheet follows soon after the signing of a Heads of Agreement on 215t January 2024 at New Delhi by the two companies. The two companies are engaged in a feasibility study regarding the utilization of battery technology to facilitate the transition to clean energy in India, with the aim of finalizing details of their collaboration by the summer of this year,” as per an official statement from IOCL.

In addition to meeting domestic requirements, investments in setting up local manufacturing will set up a complete supply chain ecosystem improving India’s self reliance, fortifying India’s position in the global energy landscape, Indian Oil said.

This will also lead to creating demand for raw material sourcing within the country, enhancing domestic value addition, encourage the entry of new market participants and the growth of India’s battery industry in terms of highly efficient cell technology.

On Thursday, shares of IOCL closed 1.08% higher at 168 apiece on the NSE. The stock has risen nearly 30% so far this year.
