Bhubaneshwar is renowned for its wonderfully carved temples, which stand as a remarkable testament to the intriguing inventiveness of human people. The city of Bhubaneshwar in the Indian state of Orissa is often referred to as the “City of Temples.” Bhubaneshwar was the historical capital of Kalinga, and it was once home to around 7,000 temples. Most of these temples are now ruins. Bhubaneshwar is home to many fantastic sights, some of which are as follows:

Temple of Lingaraja

Harihar, also known as Half Vishnu and Half Shiva, is worshipped in Bhubaneshwar’s Lingaraja Temple, a significant and one-of-a-kind temple. The god Tirubhuvaneshwar, whose name means “Lord of the Three Worlds,” is housed in the temple’s holiest of holies. Between the years 1090 and 1140, the temple was constructed. The temple’s subsequent additions include those seen above. Intricate carvings of winged creatures, human and divine beings, and otherworldly creatures adorn the temple’s front.

Swayambhu is a term used to describe Lingaraj (self-originated Shivling). The temple is also significant because it represents the blending of the Shaivist and Vaishnavist traditions in Odisha. Shivs are called Hari Hara, after the sound they make. Perhaps the developing Lord Jagannath worship, which corresponded with the Lingaraja Temple’s construction, had an influence.

The Holy Shrines of Rajarani

Rajarani temple, located in a lovely area, is a harmonious expression of careful design, symmetrical shape, and superb workmanship. That it is considered a pinnacle of Odisha Temple Design is not surprising. Historians believe it was a shrine to Shiva that went by the name Indresvara. The Rajarani Temple was constructed in the eleventh century and is devoted to the Hindu god Brahma. The temple’s 59-foot tower and elaborate sculptures are its most striking features. In several of the sculptures, Nayikas, Nymphs, and Mithuna couples are shown in amorous positions. The temple was constructed with a reddish-gold stone known as Rajraniya, thus the name.

Holy Shrines of Rajarani (Image: Shutterstock)

The Somavamsi people originated in Central India and migrated to Odisha, explaining why the temple’s design is reminiscent of Khajuraho’s Kandariya Mahadev Temple. The Jaganmohan (entry hall) has no sculptures like those in the sanctum sanctorum (it is thought that the temple couldn’t be finished for some reason). The contrast makes the temple all the more stunning.

The Temple of Vaital Deul

The Vaital Delhi Temple has been around since the eighth century. Dedicated to Parvati, the goddess, the temple has an idol of the deity draped in a garland of skulls and brandishing weapons. The temple’s outside is unremarkable, but the inside is stunningly ornamented.

In contrast to the elaborate sculptural decoration seen on every other surviving Odia temple tower, this one has a rather simple outside surface for the vault. The Jagmohan of the Vaital Mandir has been designed to evoke the form of the more typical Temple, and this is done by carefully inserting a smaller version of the more familiar Temple form at each of the four corners (porch). Even a cursory inspection of the Vaital Temple’s sculptures reveals a high level of artistic mastery. The 10-armed Nataraja, also known as Shiva the Dancer, is encased in the medallion of the top Chaitya window. Situated in front of the Jaganmohan’s flat roof is a stone pillar with two Buddha-like figures sitting in dharma-chakra-pravartana mudra.

Temple of Mukteshwar

The temple was dedicated to the god Shiva and was built somewhere in the 10th century. Both the magnificent entryway and the temple’s tower are impressive. If the Parasumreswar temple is the birthplace of Odisha’s temple building, then the Mukteswar temple is in its mature form.

The closeness of the two temples is ironic, since this may be the unique opportunity in history to compare the very different architectural styles of two separate human cultures. While the Parasurameswar temple’s sculptures are sparse on embellishments, the Mukteswar temples are bursting with elaborate details.

Temple of Brahmeshwar

It is a beautiful temple with four corner shrines, two walls of the enclosure, and a central tank. Its construction may be traced back to the 11th century.

Temple of Brahmeshwar (Image: Shutterstock)

Bhubaneswar is home to a plethora of elaborate temples, but the Brahmeswara Temple is especially significant to the city’s history. This masterpiece from the 9th century incorporates elements of traditional Odisha architecture, such as the Rekha Deul or Sikhara (tower), and the Jagmohan (horizontal) construction (Assembly Hall). Jagmohan and lion-headed figures carved within the temple have a remarkable similarity to those seen in Mukteswar Temple.

Udayagiri and Khandagiri

Six kilometres to the south of Bhubaneshwar, the twin hills of Khandagiri and Udayagiri are home to some of the world’s most impressive rock-cut cave architecture. Located near Udayagiri, the Hathi Gumpha (also known as the Elephant Cave) is a must-see attraction. The caverns, which are barely 7 kilometres from Bhubaneswar, provide a glimpse into the past and are likely the sole source of information on a period of history that is still a mystery. Ruler Kharavela of the infamous Meghavahana dynasty, commonly regarded as the greatest king in the historical records of Odisha, commissioned the construction of these rock-cut caverns about the second century BC. They were first found by a young officer named Andrew Sterling.

The Jain monks had a place to live and meditate in the caves carved out of the Kumari mountains. Of the original 117 caverns, only 33 are still in use today. Udaygiri hill has eighteen caverns, whereas Khandagiri hill has fifteen.

A Trip to Bhubaneshwar’s Markets

Bhubaneshwar’s bazaars are lined with stores selling a wide variety of woven textiles and handicrafts, including murals, silk saris, copper god and goddess idols, fruit baskets, silver jewellery, bowls, pitchers, glasses, lamp shades, and much more.

Stunning destinations in India that resemble foreign locations

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

Forget travelling abroad for a scenic holiday. There are umpteen destinations in India that will quell your urge to go on a holiday abroad.

Travelling the world now is more than just experiential – it’s a milestone, a tick on the bucket list, a feather in the cap, a leap towards the aspired life and more than anything – a fuel boosting your esteem needs and a currency of conversation among youth.

While international travel has always been aspirational and a thing of desire – the last two years of being home bound have been quite a game changer. With international borders being shut – domestic avenues have been our only escapade. Travel has had its “Eureka Moment” and travellers have not only learned to find love in their own country, but have awakened to the realisation – that we have treasure exactly where we sit, and we really don’t need to go out hunting for it.

India in itself is a rich plethora of landscapes that we haven’t completely discovered yet. As we set back into motion in a post-pandemic world, we are all set to unfurl our wings, ready to start jet-setting once again. Here is a list of ten interesting places in India that are no less than the foreign lands you aspire to be teleported to.

With not only much easier access, but are much lighter on the pocket and palatable to our crazy work-life schedules.

The Mont Blanc (France) feels in the Kangra Valley

A charming village called Billing lies in the heart of the Kangra Valley. It’s home to paragliders, but it’s still untouched by swarm of tourists. Situated 60 km from Dharamshala, this pristine, off beat, quiet Himalayan village is exactly what you need to unwind and detox from the hectic city life. Try your hands at paragliding, enjoy the scenic treks or rent a mountain bike – there is a lot to explore in this little paradise.

Let’s ditch England for the ‘Lake District of India’

Prettier than its “Firang” counterpart (Lake District of England), this jewel in the Uttrakhand , Nainital is adorned with some beautiful lakes – like Naini Lake, Bhimtal, Naukuchya Tal, These are sure to leave you bewitched in their exquisite beauty. With artistic landscapes, shimmering water, lush greens and snow laden mountain views, this place is rightly called the Lake district of India.

Sakura is overrated. It’s time to visit India’s Cherry Blossom Hub

While “Cherry Blossom” are synonymous to Japan and its iconic Sakura. Did you know that you can catch a glimpse of this mesmerising pink splendour in your own country? Ye. Shillong in Meghalaya is another Cherry-bloom destination which turns into a whimsical pink fairyland adorning the cherry blossom in the winter months particularly in November. Dotted in pink and white – this awe inspiring pink floral blanket is definitely a not-to-miss.

Frozen Gurudongmar lake is a glimpse of Iceland

One of the highest lakes in the world (elevation of 17,800 ft), Gurudongmar lake in Sikkim has a strong resemblance to Iceland’s Jökulsárlón lake.
Fed by glaciers, this clear blue water lake, located to the north of Kanchendzonga range spreads across 290 acres and is surrounded by snow-capped peaks. This pristine beauty is truly a breath-taking sight.

The terrain leading to this lake is quite rugged, but the beautiful alpine pastures, lovely rhododendrons and the final sighting of this mesmerising lake makes the bumpy ride totally worth it.

The Malaysian Cameron Highlands feel in Munnar

The town of Munnar in the Western Ghats is a unique experience for all tea lovers. This Unending expanse of tea plantations at an elevation of 1532m resembles the sprawling green terraces of the Cameron highland of Pahang, Malaysia.

Munnar over the years has become a sought-after travel destination – and is a proper tourist hub visited by tourists to experience the rich cultivation of this town.

A reflection of Engelberg, Switzerland in Barot Valley

Unblemished by tourism, Barot Valley is a hidden haven located in Himachal Pradesh. Perched in breathtaking valleys this is the next best thing to the Engelberg town of Switzerland. Housing the most beautiful lagoons in Lakshadweep, Agatti is blessed with aquatic diversity, multi coloured fish, sea turtles, the most beautiful coral reefs, which is a hub for marine life.

Chitrakote Falls makes for India’s Niagra Falls

Chattisgarh’s largest and most waterlogged waterfall- Chitrakote Falls. Located in Bansar district, this waterfall has a very similar horse shoe shape and a strong resemblance to the Majestic Niagra falls . The mighty plunge, misty ambience and the unleashed powerful water current are sure to leave you awestruck in the grandeur. Watching these falls during rainy season is even more exciting –with the untamed Roar of the water making this experience even more thrilling.

Discovering ‘Paris of the East’

The quaint little town of Puducherry (Pondicherry) is a mood in itself. Rich in history and culture, the French influence is strongly felt in this city and it is often called “India’s little France”. The French legacy stays preserved with the architecture and cityscape. The old French buildings, street corners , Parisian home painted with pastel hues and a large majority of locals speaking French- this is a whole vibe- which is very different from other Indian cities.

Safari into Wild Indian Amazon

Situated on the south of Kolkata, Sunderban- the gigantic mangrove forests are truly a wonder- worth visiting. The thick tropical rain forests of the Sunder bans boast of a massive variety of flora and fauna- a unique ecosystem . A boating trip through this mangrove habitat is a mandate to experience the wild in its most raw form. From Mount Fuji to Phuket: Destinations in Asia you must travel next

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

. To properly experience everything that Asia has to offer would take months, making it difficult to choose just a few destinations.

Both in terms of land mass and human population, Asia is the world’s largest continent. A large number of different cultures coexist peacefully throughout Asia. There is no other place on Earth where so many different peoples and cultures coexist so harmoniously.

Spending a few months exploring this land is a minimum commitment. The good news is that we’ve made it easy by compiling a list of the top five Asian tourist destinations.

Get this journey to Asia started already!

Japan’s Towering Mount Fuji

While technically a stratovolcano, Mount Fuji has been dormant since 1708. Stunning Mount Fuji is a member of Japan’s ‘3 Sacred or Holy Mountains,’ each of which is attributed with a different kind of power; Fuji is the ’volcanic power’ mountain. This should already sound frightening, yet Aokigahara can be found at the mountain’s foot. This deep woodland, also called ‘The Suicide Forest,’ is located on top of cooled lava and is surrounded by ice caves, all of which work together to dampen outside noise and create an eerie, isolated atmosphere.

Many tourists come to this World Heritage Site and internationally recognised emblem of Japan just to take photographs, while some come for the climbing. Women were not permitted to climb to the peak until the 19th Century, thus today’s tourists come from all walks of life and across the age spectrum to recoup their lost time.

City of Hoi An in Vietnam

Hoi An is a great starting point for visits to other UNESCO World Heritage Sites including the My Son Sanctuary and the Cua Dai Temple. Hoi An is one of the most interesting Asian destinations because of the lantern festival you may join. The greatest way to see Asian culture is to go to different countries and attend their festivals and museums.

The Lantern Festival is held in Hoi An on every full moon to pay tribute to the city’s past generations via the medium of light. On the evening before a full moon, residents of the Ancient Town switch off all the city’s electric lights and decorate their homes and the river with bright lanterns and candles.

Jaipur, in the Indian state of Rajasthan

Jantar_Mantar_at_Jaipur

Jaipur, although less well-known than New Delhi or Mumbai, wins the award for ‘most beautiful’ city in India. Jaipur is home to a population of artists and is sometimes referred to as the beautiful Pink City because of the distinctive pink tint of the sandstone used to construct many of the city’s buildings. Block printing, blue ceramics, shellac work, stone sculptures, and the distinctive technique of Bandhani are all created by local artisans.

The Island of Phuket, Thailand

As Thailand’s largest island, Koh Samui is a popular tourist destination. Phuket is home to some of Thailand’s most beautiful beaches, with powdery white sands and a clear blue sea beyond the sight.

Kata, Kamala, and Hat Karon beaches are bustling with visitors from November to February but transform into quiet fishing communities when the rains come. The stunning coral reefs that dot the shoreline provide for excellent snorkelling, diving, sea kayaking, and island hopping.

The Big Buddha, a 45-metre-tall figure coated in Burmese marble, can be reached by climbing a hill, while Wat Chalong, the island’s biggest and most significant Buddhist temple, is adorned in white and gold.

Capital of South Korea, Seoul

South Korea is a great place to visit during the spring. This means that South Korea is the place to go for a quiet, stress-free spring break. South Korea seldom sees temperatures higher than 17 degrees. As a result, visitors of all stripes may bask in Seoul’s year-round mild climate with ease. Mounts Songnisan, Jirisan, and Seoraksan all have national parks where hikers are welcome. Your trip to Seoul will be one of the most memorable times of your life.

Asia is the world’s most populous and second-largest continent, and it is also home to several ancient cultures. To properly experience everything that Asia has to offer would take months, making it difficult to choose just a few destinations. So, with no further ado, pack your bags and head out to the amazing destinations listed in this article to make the most out of your trip!

Lachen or Lachung? Travelling for the first time to Gangtok?

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

The North Sikkim trip would not be complete without seeing Lachen and Lachung. Tourists who wish to visit Gurudongmar Lake, Yumthang Valley, Chopta Valley, or Zero Point may do so from either Lachen or Lacnhung, two cities that serve as convenient hubs for these destinations.

When we think about beautiful areas, North Sikkim is the one landscape that comes to mind. The wildflowers and verdant hills are a sight to see for many, while others find the craggier landscapes more appealing.

All of these, and more, may be found in North Sikkim. A journey to North Sikkim, which is spread out over a wide range of elevations, will allow you to enjoy a wide variety of gifts that Mother Nature has for us.

The Definitive Guide to Lachen

In addition to its sister community of Lachung, Chopta Valley Village serves as a starting point for excursions to Gurudongmar Lake. Placed at a lofty altitude of 8,838 feet. It would take you around 6-7 hours to travel up to this location from Gangtok via the North Sikkim Highway.

From Gangtok, the roads are like a roller coaster. Taking a car is the most common form of transportation. Driving here from Gangtok passes through three notable stops along the route. These locations consist of Mangan, Phodong, and Chunthang. The road divides in two from Chungthang. Leave Chungthang through the road that forks off to the left; it’s approximately 26 km from the city.

Several noteworthy locations may be found along the route from Gangtok toward Lachen through Chungthang. This means that you will probably arrive in Lachen late on the first day. Phensang Gompa, a minor gompa affiliated with the enormous Nyingmapa School about 17 km north of Gangtok, is estimated to be around 300 years old. Its 17th-century foundations were destroyed by a catastrophe in 1947. The prayer halls have been tastefully refurbished, and visitors are encouraged to make use of the opportunity to do so. The annual Chaam festival is held on 2 days, the 28th and 29th of the Tibetan calendar’s 10th month.

Thekong Tek, leader of the Lepchas, and Khye Bumsa, chief of the Bhutias, made a pact at Kabi Lunchok, which is close to this gompa, in the 13th Century. There are now other memorials at this location, making it a serene and nice area to take a rest.

The beautiful Seven Sisters Waterfall is a stunning cascade of pure water that “cuts a chasm over a wayside cardamom plantation and nosedives into a rocky pool,” located about 30 km from Gangtok. Visit this government-run café to warm yourself with a cup of tea and take in the breathtaking scenery. When taken in a rightward direction, it leads to Lachung. From here on out, the route might be rocky and unfavourable, depending on the weather. A wild trip awaits, so buckle up your mind.

The Definitive Guide to Lachung

Lachung is a great base from which to explore the Himalayas, so plan to spend some time hiking, sightseeing, visiting monasteries, and interacting with the locals (especially the dance and music). This charming hill town has incredible scenery and natural splendour stashed away in its back pocket, making it the icing on the cake that is the state of Sikkim.

Trekking is available in Yumthang Valley and on Mount Katao, while the Bhim Nala falls and the snow-covered Zero points are sure to steal your breath away. Everyone who visits the Lachung monastery should meet some monks and welcome them with reverence before seeing the Mask dance.

Lakes, verdant forests, pastures, and calming but thrilling vistas make just the idea of a trip to Lachung awe-inspiring. Come to Lachung and take some incredible pictures to look back on for the rest of your life.

Yumthang Valley is a must-see if you’re in Lachung. When you visit Yumthang Valley, you’ll see a beautiful aesthetic side: a green valley dotted with pastures, full of little and medium-sized flowers. The existence of a placid blue river in the middle of the valley adds to the enchantment of the flora in the area. Primroses, Louseworts, Cinquefoils, and Cobra-lilies are just a few of the many kinds of flowers that may be found in the valley.

Which location, therefore, should you check out first?

In all candour, any of them would do. In addition, if you want to stay for at least a week, you can easily squeeze both Lachung and Lachen into your schedule because of the short driving time between them (just three to four hours).

Visiting Rajasthan: Five best tourist spots in the State Royale of India

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

Keoladeo National Park, formerly known as Bharatpur National Park, is a renowned avifauna refuge and a bird watcher’s paradise on the list of UNESCO World Heritage sites.

Formerly known as Rajputana, or the country of the kings, Rajasthan is today among the most regal states in India. Its total land area is 342,239 square kilometres or 10.4 percent of India. Despite its vast expanse, though, the Thar Desert dominates the region. The Sutlej-Indus Valley is parallel to the Thar Desert. Rajasthan, known as ‘the country of kings,’ earned its illustrious title because it is situated in the vanguard of Indian culture.

The fact that Rajasthan is a princely state means that it has a fantastic collection of arts and architecture. Rajasthan is home to some of the world’s greatest cultural diversity due to the fact that each of its different kingdoms has its own unique architectural and artistic style. This article will provide a list of five of Rajasthan’s most visited attractions.

Mount Abu

Mount Abu, nestled in the Aravalli Mountains, is Rajasthan’s lone hill station. The Dilwara Temples, one of the most beautiful examples of Indian architecture, are, nonetheless, the main draw. Nakki Lake is the perfect place for a peaceful boat ride and a sunset view for weary travellers. The lakeside establishments provide delicious regional cuisine and are perfect for a relaxing meal. In addition, Mount Abu is home to Guru Shikhar, the highest mountain in the Aravali Mountains. The Mount Abu Forest Sanctuary, which is home to a wide variety of plants and animals, is another must-see.

Fortress of Bhangarh

Bhangarh is well-known for its ancient ruins and eerie legends, earning it the reputation of India’s most haunted city. It is conveniently situated between the two major cities of Jaipur and Delhi. The Bhangarh Fort can be found in the Alwar region of Rajasthan and dates back to the 17th Century. Bhagwant Das constructed it for his offspring Madho Singh I. Madho Singh chose to honour his grandpa Man Singh (also spelt Bhan Singh) by naming the place after him.

Walking through the city’s main gate, visitors to Bhoot Bangla, the abandoned fort’s alternative name, feel a shudder run down their spine. There are palaces, havelis, and temples within the fort. The other entrances to the fort include the Lahori Gate, the Phulbari Gate, the Ajmeri Gate, and the Delhi Gate. A plethora of Hindu temples greets visitors just within the gates. The palace of the king is at the very edge of the fort’s confines.

The Eklingji Temple

The 22 km north of Udaipur is where you’ll find one of Rajasthan’s most visited temples: the Eklingji Temple. The Hindu temple of Eklingji is devoted to Lord Shiva, and its stunning design draws many visitors each year. The pyramidal top and intricately carved tower of this two-story temple make it seem spectacular. The peaceful waters lap at the base of the temple’s exterior walls, which are lined with stairs.

Eklingji, supposedly set up in 734 AD by Bappa Rawal, was the supreme deity of the Mewar dynasty. Upon entering this hall, your eyes will be drawn to a stunning silver figure of Nandi; farther inside the temple, you will find two other representations of Nandi, one carved from black stone and the other from brass.

Chand Baori

Chand Baori, located in the hamlet of Abhaneri, is one of the most visited tourist spots in Rajasthan. It is one of many buildings from the 10th Century that are representative of the state of Rajasthan’s artistic and architectural achievements. The stepwell is almost 13 stories deep, and it has over 3500 steps leading to the water storage area. Incredibly, it is still in excellent shape despite being over a thousand years old.

ALSO READ: Magical and miraculous, here is the Land of Mirages – Deserts in Rajasthan

The Archeological Survey of India (ASI) preserves this stunning edifice from bygone times, which is no longer in use but yet displays the old Indian sculptural style and astounding mathematical perfection. Visitors from all over the globe are drawn to the world’s deepest step well to marvel at its stunning beauty and to learn about the region’s rich cultural history and architectural heritage.

Bharatpur National Park

Keoladeo National Park, formerly known as Bharatpur National Park, is a renowned avifauna refuge and a bird watcher’s paradise on the list of UNESCO World Heritage sites. The 29-kilometre natural reserve, called Ghana by the locals, is a patchwork of dry grasslands, forests, wooded marshes, and wetlands. There are 366 species of birds, 379 plant species, 50 fish species, 13 snake species, 5 lizard species, 7 amphibian species, 7 turtle species, and many more invertebrate species that call these environments home. Waterfowl in the thousands arrive at the park each winter to breed.

Travelling from one region of Rajasthan—known as the ‘land of kings and forts’—to another will reveal new facets of the state’s cultural heritage. Only a fraction of the mysteries of this ancient country has been revealed in the aforementioned locations. Tourist attractions in Rajasthan provide some of the most profoundly enlightening experiences imaginable, and they will hold your attention from the minute you set foot in the state.

Periyar National Park in Kerala is a well-known tiger reserve that lies in the foothills of the Western Ghats. The park’s lush woodlands take up all 777 square kilometres of its space. The area of Thekkady, which is around 120 kilometres from Kochi, has earned the name ‘Thekkady’ for its distinctive setting. It is one of the few spots in the world where you may observe wild elephants, and it is also known for its breathtaking scenery. The park is a sight to see, especially with the surrounding evergreen and semi-evergreen trees.

The diverse geographical factors including temperature and terrain of the park sustain the diversified flora and wildlife. The Park ground is undulating. It is proud of its many tributaries that are just a few yards wide.

An estimated 240 species of birds and 100 kinds of butterflies call this park home. Tigers and elephants both reside here. Additionally, the Indian wild dog, wild hogs, gaur, dole, sambar, and barking deer may also be seen here. Motor launches are open for use all day, so you may go for a boat trip on the lake whenever you choose. Trekking through the jungle to see the sacred Mangla Devi shrine is another popular activity for visitors.
