Summary

Under Uttar Pradesh’s new tourism policy Ayodhya, Chitrakoot, Bithoor, and other similar “places of importance” would be included in the Ramayana circuit. The Buddhist circuit would comprise Kapilvastu,  Sarnath, Kushinagar, Kaushambi, Ramgram, Shravasti, and other locations, while the Krishna circuit will include Mathura, Gokul, Vrindavan, Govardhan, Barsana, Nandgaon, and Baldev.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Wednesday signed off a new tourism strategy which aims to become the state and country’s premier destination for spiritual and religious pilgrims. As the state’s minister of urban development, AK Sharma, said, the program also prioritises the revitalisation of less-visited areas.

Ayodhya, Chitrakoot, Bithoor, and other similar “places of importance” would be included in the Ramayana circuit, he said, outlining a new policy agreed upon by the Adityanath administration.

The minister also announced that the Parshwanath Digambar Jain monastery in Ramnagar will be included in the Jain circuit that now begins at Deogarh, Hastinapur.

Sharma has said that across the state, sanctuary and forest reserves would be built to encourage wildlife and eco-tourism and that locations with natural splendour and environmental potential will be discovered and promoted.

Moreover, he mentioned plans to improve tourist-friendly infrastructure and expand wildlife-centric growth zones simultaneously.

He also said that stops at Hastinapur, Barnawa, Mathura, Kampilya, Echhatra, Kaushambi, Gonda, and Lakshagriha were planned for the Mahabharata’s grand tour.

The Shaktipeeth loop will likewise be constructed in a similar fashion. It would stretch from Saharanpur’s Shivani Devi, Chitrakoot, and Sheetla Mata in the Mau district to Devipatan, Maa Lalita Devi, Naimisharanya, Maa Jwala Devi, and Shakumbhari Devi in the Naimisharanya.

Gorakhpur, Sant Ravidas Sthal, Balrampur, Mathura, Maa Parameshwari Devi, Bighu Ashram, Azamgarh, Bateshwar of Agra, and Hanuman Dham have all been included on the list, he said, to increase religious tourism in the state.

Along the same lines, a Sufi Kabir loop will be created. Kabirdas’ Karmabhoomi – Lahartara in Varanasi is projected to connect to the existing nodes in Amethi, Maghar, and Sant Kabir Nagar.

The government, even the innovators, will also create hobbyist circuits. The areas already well-known for their handmade goods will be prioritized for expansion. The minister said that a plan to build a craft circuit incorporating all such regions had been approved.

The Bundelkhand circuit would also be expanded, he added, along with other historic locations like Meerut, Shahjahanpur, Kakori, and Chaurichaura from the independence movement. Charkhari, Chitrakoot, Deogarh, Lalitpur, Kalinjar, Jhansi, Banda, Hamirpur, Mahoba, and Jalaun are only a few of the districts included.

Budget hotels, historic hotels, five-star hotels, historic homestays, eco-tourism modules, caravan tourist units, exhibitions, pilgrim dorms, Dharamshalas, health resorts, all-weather season camps, reservoir lakes, and well-being and adventurous tourism activities are all included in the new policy.

The Nazi-stolen Chagall artwork sells at auction in New York City for $7.4 million

Summary

The autumn auction season, of which the Phillips auction site sale was a part, sees key players in the business sell hundreds of pieces of art for over several billion US dollars within a few days in the affluent areas of Manhattan.

An original Marc Chagall painting that was among 15 pieces taken by the Nazis and later restored by France to his descendants of the afflicted families fetched $7.4 million at bidding in New York on Tuesday.

The autumn auction season, of which the Phillips auction site sale was a part, sees key players in the business sell hundreds of pieces of art for over several billion US dollars within a few days in the affluent areas of Manhattan.

Phillips made about $139 million from the sale of 46 artworks on Tuesday. The record price was $41.6 million, paid for a gigantic artwork by Cy Twombly named “Untitled” from 2005 that had previously belonged to French industrialist Francois Pinault.

The violin maker David Cender, a Polish Jew who was forced to go inside the Lodz ghetto, bought Chagall’s 1911 paint on canvas ‘The Father’ in 1928.

The violin maker and his daughter and wife were sent to Auschwitz, where they were murdered, but the man escaped and eventually settled in France. He died there in 1966, never having reclaimed the artwork.

By this point, the piece had resurfaced in shows, and Phillips as well as the French cultural ministry had determined that Marc Chagall had purchased it between 1947 and 1953, without knowing its history.

After the painter, who was originally from the Russian Empire but later moved to France, passed away in 1985, the work “The Father” was added to the national archives in 1988, eventually ending up in the Centre Pompidou before being transferred to the Musée d’Art et d’Histoire Juive de Paris.

At the outset of the year, the French parliament overwhelmingly passed a measure to restore 15 works from Jewish families that had been stolen by the Nazis. Roselyne Bachelot, who was in charge of culture at the time, hailed the move as a “first step” in restoring plundered artworks and literature to their rightful owners.

As is often the case when a stolen piece is returned decades after it was taken, Cender’s descendants opted to sell the artwork rather than divide it among themselves.

The year Chagall moved to Paris is reflected in the year of his father’s picture. His early pieces, inspired by the city’s cutting-edge modernism, have now become very collectable.

When he left France to travel to Moscow in 1914, he burned several of them. Inevitably, “The Father” would pique the curiosity of museums and private collectors.

Phillips, like other auction houses, did not provide information on the buyer.

Zalipie, a rare gem! Wonderful flower paintings adorn every surface of this tranquil Polish village

Summary

Zalipie is a remote Maopolska town located about 35 km north of Tarnów, and it is here that Polish folk art practices are possibly the most vibrant. Zalipie is one of the most gorgeous sites you can ever brandish a camera, thanks to the ladies who have been decorating their houses with vibrant, flowery designs

Hidden in Lesser Poland, nestled among the greenery, Mia and I embarked upon a journey to uncover this concealed treasure trove. It was 2016 and I had just met her in a hostel in Krakow with a book about Poland in her hand. She was from Japan, travelling across the country. I was just in the city for a couple of days. I took interest in the book she was reading and she told me about the rare places mentioned there. Her eyes were set on the beautiful floral pics. The place was a small village where we had to go by bus. I, as usual, was always game for an adventurous trip to nowhere. With no further ado, we set out on the voyage to the unknown. What we found out, still burns fresh in my memories like a sweet perfume, and whenever I need respite, they take me back to a tranquil place of comfort.

Located in Dbrowa County in the Lesser Poland Voivodeship in southeastern Poland, the little hamlet of Zalipie is a rural community. Nearby cities include Olesno, located 5 km (3 miles) to the west, Dbrowa Tarnowska, located 8 km (5 miles) to the north-west, and Kraków, the regional capital, located 68 km (42 miles) to the east.

The houses are famously painted with regional designs. Among the finest instances of this custom is the house where the Polish artist.

Zalipie is a remote Maopolska town located about 35 km north of Tarnów, and it is here that Polish folk art practices are possibly the most vibrant. Zalipie is one of the most gorgeous sites you can ever brandish a camera, thanks to the ladies who have been decorating their houses with vibrant, flowery designs since the late 19 Century.

What’s the story behind the town’s colourful moniker?

It is a longstanding custom in this community, affectionately referred to as ‘The Painted Village,’ to paint elaborate flower designs on any unfinished surface of stone or wood. Although there is little evidence to back up the legend, it is often held that the practice of spraying flowers on one’s walls dates back to the days when smoke and soot emanated from everyone’s modest wood-burning stoves. Women in Zalipie simply painted flowers over the soot stains that emerged on the outside and interior walls of their houses. Brushes were fashioned from cow hair, and paint was made from lard and food colouring.

This delightfully distinct custom was eventually handed down from one age to the next. As women looked to the outdoors and local legends for subject matter, their paintings grew in scale and vibrancy.

Even while Zalipie is famous all throughout Poland and makes for a great Instagram photo op, it is still somewhat off from the typical tourist route, so you can expect to be greeted with friendly faces and plenty of questions from the locals. Residents are kind and often welcome tourists inside their houses to show off their collections of art.

A Polish woman saw us and invited us to her home. She didn’t know much English but we still spoke in gestures. She served us some tea and showed us the art she made. We bought a few souvenirs for ourselves- some things I still hold precious in my collection of items from different countries.

Wreaths and garlands painted on the walls, ceilings, beams, and flowers decorating the stoves, tablecloths, fireplaces, doorframes, pots, and vases are all possibilities. Straw spiders strung from the rafters and colourful paper flowers may also be seen as works of handicraft, often found in proximity to or even under holy symbols. If you have a car as well as some time to see Poland, you should definitely add this peaceful wonder to your itinerary, since there are few travel experiences more true to life.

24 stunningly preserved ancient Rome bronze statues discovered in Italy: see pics

Archaeologists in Italy have uncovered 24 beautifully preserved bronze statues dating back to ancient Roman times in thermal baths in Tuscany, in what experts are hailing as a sensational find. Most of the statues date to between the 2nd century BC and the 1st century AD, a period of “great transformation in ancient Tuscany” as it switched from Etruscan to Roman rule, the Italian Culture Ministry said in a statement. (Image: AP)
The statues were discovered in San Casciano dei Bagni, a hilltop town in the Siena province near Rome, where archaeologists have been exploring the muddy ruins of an ancient bathhouse since 2019. “It is a very significant, exceptional finding,” Jacopo Tabolli, an assistant professor from the University for Foreigners in Siena who coordinates the dig, told Reuters on Tuesday. (Image: AP)
A top culture ministry official called the discovery one of the most remarkable “in the history of the ancient Mediterranean” and the most important since the Riace Bronzes, a giant pair of ancient Greek warriors, were pulled from the sea off the toe of Italy in 1972. Tabolli said the statues, depicting Hygieia, Apollo and other Greco-Roman divinities, used to adorn a sanctuary before they were immersed in thermal waters, in a sort of ritual, “probably around the 1st century AD”. (Image: AP)
According to the Italian Culture Ministry, the time period was an “era of great conflicts” and “cultural osmosis”, in which the Great Bath sanctuary of San Casciano represented a “unique multicultural and multilingual haven of peace, surrounded by political instability and war.” (Image: AP)
The statues were covered by almost 6,000 bronze, silver and gold coins, and San Casciano’s hot muddy waters helped to preserve them “almost like as on the day they were immersed. this suggested they came from what he called an elite settlement, where archaeologists also found “wonderful inscriptions in Etruscan and Latin”, Tabolli said. (Image: AP)
Massimo Osanna, a top culture ministry official, called it one of the most remarkable discoveries “in the history of the ancient Mediterranean” and the most important since the Riace Bronzes, a giant pair of ancient Greek warriors, were pulled from the sea off the toe of Italy in 1972. (Image: AP)
The ministry said the statues have been taken to a restoration laboratory in nearby Grosseto, but will eventually be put on display in a new museum in San Casciano. (Image: AP; Text by Reuters)

5 fascinating things you should know about Durga Puja

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

As part of Durga puja, banana trees are dressed up like Indian brides on the seventh day. Banana trees are called “Kalaa Bua” when they are worshiped with Lord Ganesha while adorned in sarees and crimson. The bride is borne on a palki, much as she would be in an authentic Indian wedding. Nabapatrika is formally created by the priest by wrapping eight plants with nine threads.

Kumartuli, a neighbourhood in Kolkata, comes to life in the months leading up to Durga Puja, as artists and craftsmen work to mould clay into sculptures of the Goddess and her family. The Kumars, or God-makers, fashion the clay idols known as Chinmayi, which the priest then transforms into Mrinmoyi via a series of rituals performed over the course of the festival’s five days. It commemorates the eradication of evil when Goddess Durga vanquished Demon King Mahishasur. Hindu mythology suggests that the goddess makes an appearance at her home on Earth at this time to bestow her graces onto her faithful. While we can’t deny Durga Puja’s importance to the Bengali culture, there are certain details we could be overlooking. Here are five fascinating insights about Durga Puja that you may have not have known.

1. To begin with, this is not the original Durga Puja

Our October celebration of Durga Puja is not the original festival. Before confronting Ravana, Lord Rama worshipped the Devi in a ritual called Akaal Bodhan. When Lord Rama was preparing to fight Ravana, he paid homage to Ma Durga. In the beginning, Lord Rama adored the ‘Mahishasura Mardini’ or the slayer of the demon lord by burning 108 lamps and presenting 108 blue lotuses. The true Durga Puja, also called Chaitra Basanti Puja, takes place in March, right before Ram Navami.

2. The brothel’s soil

It is often held that the yard of a brothel is in its purest form. The virtue of a brothel is said to stem from the belief that men, upon entering, shed all their morality at the door. The soil, known as “Punya Mati” or the holy soil, should be requested and received from the hand of a sex worker as a present and blessing, according to local customs. This pure mud is begged from the brothel and utilized to sculpt the statue of Goddess Durga.

3. Eyes that show light in the darkness

The eyes of the statue of the holy Ma Durga are painted only when the artist is there, adding an extra layer of care to an already meticulous procedure. During Durga Puja, the Mother is given an eye in the rite known as Chakshu Daan (lending the third eye). According to traditional tradition, the Goddess receives her third eye from the priest performing the Chakshu Daan while the room is pitch dark. Neither the placement nor the sketch has ever been incorrect.

4. Worship of the Banana bride

5. History behind Daaker Saaj

Originally, decorations for the idols were used by incorporating the Indian cork and called the Sholaer Shaaj, which was an authentic throwback to the art form’s roots. Over time, the affluent Shobhabazaaar royal family made the decision to wrap the Goddess in shimmery and gorgeous silver foil. That is how Daaker Saaj came by. “Daaker Saaj” refers to one of the traditionalists and most ancient styles. The idol was decorated with beaten silver, known as rangta, and imported from Germany. Daaker Saaj is the name given to it since it was sent by the postal service, also known as ‘Daak.

All around India, but particularly in the states of Odisha and West Bengal, people are eagerly anticipating this joyous event, which honours Devi Durga and her many attributes. This celebration continues for the whole 10 days of Navratri. Months of planning go into The Durga puja, and the resulting sea of beautiful ethnic outfits, glittering jewellery, and cheerful small pandals all add up to an experience that is well worth the wait. But with customs come knowledge, hence with these 5 lesser-known facts, we hope you dive deeper into the age-old culture and tradition of Durga Puja.

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

Durge Puja celebrations in Kolkata are unparalleled in terms of their antiquity, grandeur, and lavish décor. Get a head start on this year’s festivities by checking out some of the pandals on this list as you finish off your last-minute arrangements to greet Maa Durga.

In light of UNESCO’s recent declaration of Durga Puja as one of the most famous world heritage sites, we take a look at five of the city’s most well-known Durga Puja celebrations, which never fail to leave an unforgettable impact on the minds of its attendees year after year. Kolkata’s pujas and pandals are unparalleled in terms of their antiquity, grandeur, and lavish décor. Get a head start on this year’s festivities by checking out some of the pandals on this list as you finish off your last-minute arrangements to greet Maa Durga.

 Hindustan Park Sarbojanin

Even though the epidemic was still taking a toll on society this time last year, Hindustan Park Sarbojanin still found time to celebrate the goddess in all her splendour. The renowned puja’s subject in the previous year, Unmochon- The Revelation, evoked the phoenix rising from the ashes to symbolize the rebirth of civilization. This year, they want to recognize the unsung artists that keep companies running smoothly behind the scenes. The local craftspeople will finally get the recognition they deserve thanks to a homage called Jonaki Theke Agnisikha.

Deshapriya Park

When in Kolkata, don’t miss Deshapriya Park’s Puja Pandal, which hosts the city’s famous Durga Puja celebration. Kolkata’s Durga Puja Pandals are a must-see because they never fail to wow visitors with their creative designs and themes, such as 2017’s White Temple of Thailand.

After being closed in 2015 due to a stampede, the Pandal has seen a resurgence in popularity over the last few years. There is a lot of buzz about this particular Pandal during Kolkata’s annual Durga Puja celebration.

Behala Club

Do you recall the simple joys that used to fill our hearts with happiness when we were young? The modern generation is missing out on a lot, whether it’s the pleasure of seeing a paper boat float on a puddle or the magic of hearing a narrative handed down from generations before. After being forced to stay indoors for two years due to a pandemic, people were particularly addicted to their screens. The Behala Club, now celebrating its 78th year, chose a special theme to resurrect the joys of childhood. The 77th anniversary was commemorated in a most traditional manner last year, complete with a mud hut-style pandal and colourful bauls decorating the shrine.

Sreebhumi

Lake Town’s Sreebhumi is one of the most distinctive pandals in the city, and visitors go from far and wide to witness it. For many people, Durga Puja wouldn’t be complete without Sreebhumi. To continue its tradition as one of the city’s greatest, Sreebhumi is decorating a ‘Vatican City’-themed pandal this year. In 2022, the pandal will celebrate its Golden Jubilee, making that year a particularly significant one.

Kumartuli Park Pandal

Hundreds of potters and artists make their living in Kumartuli’s tangled alleys and byways, where they sell their wares and craft festival idols. The puja pandal just outside of Kumartuli Park is renowned for its stunning idols, despite the fact that it is not as ancient as other well-known pujas in the heart of the city. Because it is located in one of Kolkata’s oldest neighborhoods and is home to hundreds of craftsmen, the Kumartuli Park committee has been able to maintain its unique social and cultural atmosphere.

The best way to appreciate Durga Puja is by visiting some of the most famous pandals! This list is provided to assist you in your pursuit of Maa Durga in various pandals. When you’re out with your folks, don’t forget to stop by these five pandals.
