Elon Musk claims his Neuralink brain chip could cure’ tinnitus in 5 years. But don’t hold your breath

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

Elon Musk backed Neuralink has developed a neuroprosthetic device known as a brain-computer interface. Among other things, Musk claims this chip could cure tinnitus, the neurological condition that causes ringing in your ears, within five years. But is this possible?

The human brain is said to be the most complex biological structure ever to have existed. And while science doesn’t fully understand the brain yet, researchers in the expanding field of neuroscience have been making progress.

Neuroscientists have made substantial inroads towards mapping the complex functions of the brain’s 85 billion or so neurons and the 100 trillion connections between them. (To put this astronomical number into perspective, there are upwards of 400 billion stars in the Milky Way galaxy.)

Enter Neuralink, a Silicon Valley start-up backed by Elon Musk that has developed a neuroprosthetic device known as a brain-computer interface. Among other things, Musk claims this chip could cure tinnitus, the neurological condition that causes ringing in your ears, within five years. But is this possible? What is Neuralink?

The coin-sized Neuralink device, called a Link, is implanted flush with the skull by a precision surgical robot. The robot connects a thousand miniature threads from the Link to certain neurons. Each thread is a quarter the diameter of a human hair. The device connects to an external computer by Bluetooth for continuous communication back and forth.

In future, Neuralink prostheses might help people with various kinds of neurological disorders where there is a disconnect or malfunction between the brain and the nerves that serve the body. That includes people with paraplegia, quadriplegia, Parkinson’s disease and epilepsy.

Since its establishment in 2016, Neuralink has been recruiting top-class neuroscientists from academia and the broader research community to develop the technology to treat these conditions. Neuralink’s monkey can play Pong with his mind In April 2021, the company released a remarkable proof-of-concept video. It showed a nine-year-old macaque monkey called Pager successfully playing a game of Pong with his mind, by having an implanted Neuralink device connected to a computer running the game.

Pager was shown how to play Pong using a joystick. When he made a correct move, he’d receive a sip of banana smoothie. As he played, the Neuralink implant recorded the patterns of electrical activity in his brain. This identified which neurons controlled which movements. When the joystick was disconnected, Pager was able to play the game and win using only his mind.

Human trials to further develop the Neuralink prototype are expected to commence towards the end of 2022, contingent on United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval.

Musk’s tinnitus claims Elon Musk has claimed the Neuralink device could cure tinnitus by 2027. Tinnitus is a neurological condition that manifests as a ringing or buzzing in the ears in the absence of an external source.

Tinnitus is a common problem, caused when the nerve that connects the inner ear with the brain, known as the vestibulocochlear nerve, is damaged due to prolonged loud noise, injury or deficiencies in blood supply. A cure for tinnitus has proven elusive. Treatment currently centres on masking the sound or learning to ignore it.

At present, the Neuralink prosthesis connects to the cerebral cortex, the surface layer of the brain. This is where the device can remedy damage to the brain’s ability to process motor sensory input or output.

Are Musk’s claims credible? These claims might appear grandiose. Yet the underlying science is not controversial.

Neural implants have been helping people since the early 1960s when the first cochlear implant was placed in a person with impaired hearing. There has been much progress in the 60 years since then. Neuroscientists are broadly optimistic the device has potential to treat tinnitus. It may also be useful in treating obsessive compulsive disorder, repairing brain injuries, and treat conditions such as autism or degenerative diseases of the nervous system using deep brain stimulation.

As Paul Nuyujukian, director of the Brain Interfacing Laboratory at Stanford University, observes, “We are on the cusp of a complete paradigm shift. This type of technology has the potential to transform our treatments. Not just for stroke, paralysis, and motor degenerative disease, but also for pretty much every other type of brain disease.”

What do we need to be cautious of? The FDA categorises Neuralink as a class III medical device, the riskiest category. Before human trials start, Neuralink must successfully clear the rigorous FDA regulatory controls. To be approved, the company must provide exhaustive clinical trial data from non-human test subjects (such as Pager the monkey) to conservatively justify moving to the next phase. Some monkeys have died during Neuralink’s tests, and critics have raised animal welfare concerns.

The approvals process for human testing could take some time. The regulators will be looking for unintended negative consequences of the device, such as depression. Also of interest will be how practical it is to remove or repair a device should it malfunction, and how to manage the risk of brain injury or infection.

Once FDA-approved, Neuralink will enlist human volunteers and the next round of trials will proceed. How long it will be until the device is commercially available and how much it will cost is anyone’s guess. It could be years and with a price tag that puts it out of reach for all but the wealthy.

So it’s wise to not hold out false hope for an affordable implant in the short term.

Amazon recruiting to develop new ‘magical’ AR smart home product: Report

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

An Amazon job listing for senior technical program manager, new products, stated that those chosen ‘will develop an advanced XR research concept into a magical and useful new-to-world consumer product.’

Amazon is the latest tech giant to venture into the space of augmented reality (AR). The company has opened up several job listings for a “new-to-world smart-home product” that uses XR/AR technology, reported Protocol. XR, or extended reality, is a term that encompasses both virtual reality (VR) and AR.

While there aren’t many details available on what this product might be, details are relatively sparse on the job listings as well (some of which have already been closed as well). The listing for senior technical program manager, new products, stated that those chosen “will develop an advanced XR research concept into a magical and useful new-to-world consumer product.”

A listing for software engineer, XR/AR, XR/AR devices, which has already closed, read that the responsibilities include “conceiving and developing key software and architecture for a new-to-world smart-home product” and “developing code for early prototypes through mass production.”

Others in AR/XR business

Amazon is just the latest big tech name to join in the race to make AR/XR devices. Facebook-owner Meta Platforms already sells the Oculus Quest 2, one of the more popular VR headsets out in the market, and has even partnered with RayBan to sell smart glasses that it started selling in September 2021. The company now plans to launch its first AR headset by 2024.

Microsoft has also been selling its own popular VR headset, the HoloLens, though reports from February suggested that the company had scrapped its HoloLens 3 project over a lack of clear vision in the company.

At the same time, giants like Google, Apple and even Snapchat have reportedly been working on their own XR devices for years but still only expect to launch their devices in 2024, while Snapchat’s device was announced in May 2021 but is not available to the public yet.

Bounce Infinity begins rollout of its first e-scooter

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

The electric scooter start-up Bounce Infinity’s E1 electric scooter, which was launched in December last year, has now revealed that it will start its deliveries from April 18.

Smart mobility firm Bounce Infinity on Thursday said it has commenced rollout of its first consumer e-scooter E1 from the Bhiwadi facility in Rajasthan and deliveries of the vehicle will start from April 18. The company also said it is looking to set up a new half-a-million per annum capacity manufacturing facility for e-scooters in South India later this year.

Bounce Infinity is backed by marquee investors such as Accel, Accel US, Sequoia Capital India, B Capital, Falcon Edge, Qualcomm, Chirate, Omidyar Network, Maverick Capital, among others. It had launched E1 with dual options in swappable battery – scooter with Battery-as-a-Service (BaaS) — and scooter with battery and charger. It had also announced that deliveries of the e-scooter will commence from early 2022.

With the rollout of Bounce Infinity E1 from our plant, we are thrilled that the first batch of our electric scooters will soon make its way to eagerly awaiting customers across the country, said Vivekananda Hallekere, Co-Founder and CEO, Bounce Infinity. With current capacity at the Bhiwadi plant exceeding 2,00,000 scooters annually, the facility will serve as the company’s national manufacturing hub, catering to demand from across the country, the company said.

The BaaS option the first-of-its-kind in the Indian market pushes down the acquisition cost of the scooter substantially, by as much as 40 percent as compared to conventional electric scooters, it claims.

IIT Kanpur incubates startup to develop AI-based search engine for predictive policing, crime mapping

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

The startup, FCRF, is building a search engine which will map masses of often unused data from stakeholders like the BFSI and telecom sectors as well as from existing criminal records and data repositories and make it accessible to investigation agencies.

The Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur (IIT-K) is using AI to beef up policing. The premier technology institution is incubating a think tank, which is developing an artificial intelligence-driven data search engine to aid in policing.

Lucknow-based Future Crime Research Foundation (FCRF) is being incubated under IIT-K’s Artificial Intelligence and Innovation-Driven Entrepreneurship (AIIDE), Center of Excellence, Noida.

The search engine hopes to improve the investigation and policing process by using data from all relevant stakeholders to establish a data search engine. The search engine will help with predictive policing, crime mapping and analysis, FCRF hopes.

Frauds and crime are one of the main social issues, said Shashank Shekhar, CEO of FCRF, which is developing methods of predictive policing using AI.

“Now we can understand crime better and solve them faster. We are committed to promoting AI startups in UP, I am thankful to GoUP for their support for the Centre of AI at Noida,” said Dr Nikhil Agarwal, CEO, IIT Kanpur (FIRST, AIIDE and C3i Hub).

FCRF’s search engine will be able to leverage data analysis and predictive analysis AI by building data banks. The government has a trove of data from case files, FIR, charge sheets, seizure memos, conviction memos, arrest memos, crime (case/incident) data, criminals’ data, and data from the police stations records rooms and citizen complaint information. The data from the sectors like BFSI, transportation and others is often not used.

FCRF hopes to build a platform where all the available data — one set which the government already uses as well as the banking, banking, financial services and insurance (BFSI), ISP, telecom, transport data — will be a click away from investigation agencies.

“We will collect all necessary data from many sources and create a single platform that can execute data analysis utilising regression models, data mining, and artificial intelligence, as well as providing insights into the crime pattern that is unique to a given region,” said Shashank Shekhar, Co-Founder, FCRF.

Wordle buyout by New York Times draws backlash from fans

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

The once-a-day online game gives a player six chances to figure out a five-letter word, using the least number of guesses.

The New York Times Co’s acquisition of Wordle has created an uproar on social media, with fans expressing fears that the popular online word game, which is currently free to play, might be put behind a paywall.

Announcing on Monday that it had bought Wordle for an undisclosed price in the low seven figures, the Times said the game would “initially” remain free for existing and new players.

That wording led some social media users to suggest the media company would soon allow only subscribers access.

“I have never seen Twitter as immediately mad as it is about the NYT Wordle buyout,” one user tweeted. “The NYT took one nice and simple thing that a lot of people really liked, a dumb bit of fun in our exhaustingly dark times, and implied that they’ll stick it behind a paywall.”

After creating Wordle to play with his girlfriend Palak Shah, software engineer Josh Wardle released it to the public in October. Within months it became a global phenomenon, with celebrities such as Trevor Noah joining the bandwagon.

The once-a-day online game gives a player six chances to figure out a five-letter word, using the least number of guesses.

“I would be lying if I said this hasn’t been a little overwhelming,” Wardle said on a post on Twitter. “After all, I am just one person, and it is important to me that, as Wordle grows, it continues to provide a great experience to everyone.”

The Times said it expects the acquisition to broaden its digital content as it tries to reach the goal of 10 million subscribers by 2025.

The newspaper was an early adopter of the paywall when it started digital subscription plans back in 2011. That strategy helped it buck the trend of falling print revenues and build a digital business.

It has also bought into other digital media such as subscription-based audio app Audm and product review website Wirecutter. Last month it agreed to pay $550 million in cash for sports site The Athletic.

As the Times also seeks to grow paid readers outside its core news content, games and puzzles have become a key part of a strategy to keep its audience engaged on its apps and websites.

Its Games unit, which has more than one million subscriptions, started with the Daily Crossword, and later launched games such as Spelling Bee, Tiles, Letter Boxed and Vertex.

Union Budget 2022: FM Nirmala Sitharaman announces new digital university; e-Vidya initiative to be expanded

Summary

Budget 2022: Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Tuesday proposed to set up a digital university to provide education that will be built on a hub and spoke model. She also said that the ‘One Class-One TV Channel’ scheme will be implemented to provide supplementary education to children

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Tuesday proposed to set up a digital university to provide education that will be built on a hub and spoke model. She also said that the ‘One Class- One TV Channel’ scheme will be implemented to provide supplementary education to children to make up for the loss of formal education due to the COVID pandemic.

While presenting the Union Budget 2022-23, Sitharaman said, “High quality e-content in all spoken languages will be developed for radio, TV and digital platforms.”

Economic Survey’s observations on education

Earlier, the Economic Survey 2021-22 on Monday said that it is difficult to gauge the real-time impact of repeated lockdowns on the education sector. Highlighting the Annual Status of Education Report (ASER), the survey suggested that shutdown of low-cost private schools, financial distress of parents, free facilities in government schools, and families migrating back to villages could be the probable reasons for the shift from government to private schools.

The survey pointed out that expenditure on education during the pandemic has increased by 20 per cent as against nearly 73 percent in the health sector in 2021-22 when compared to 2019-20. The combined Centre and states expenditure in education increased from 3.54 lakh crore in 2014-15 to 6.97 lakh crore in 2021-22, it said.

As a percentage of GDP, it increased from 2.8 in 2014-15 to 3.1 in 2020-21. However, as a percentage to total expenditure on social services, it has decreased from 10.8 to 9.7 in this period, the survey said.

All you need to know about Tesla Bot, Elon Musk’s standout product this year

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

It stands 5 feet 8 inches tall, weighs 56 kg and is designed to execute dangerous and tedious tasks. Not new EVs, Elon Musk is needle-focused on Tesla Bot, aka Optimus, this year.

Tesla has revealed that it is not working on new cars this year and the company will not unveil any new model. Elon Musk, the CEO of the world’s most valuable automotive company, has said Tesla Bot, which was announced last year, will be the most significant product for his team in 2022.

Optimus, the robot, was teased in a Tesla China video about the company’s new R&D centre in Shanghai, implying that the team there is working on the development of the robot.

Then, in December, at The Wall Street Journal’s CEO Council Summit, Elon Musk said the robot could assist in resolving the labour shortage.

This indicates that Tesla is serious about the project and the recent statement of Elon Musk cements the claim of the launch of Tesla Bot in the near future.

Tesla Bot

The bot is designed to navigate a world built by humans and to perform tedious and dangerous tasks. It stands 5 feet 8 inches tall and weighs 56 kilograms. The bot can also carry up to 20.4 kg of weight.

The maximum speed of the Tesla bot will be five miles per hour and it will be able to lift 4 kg of weight with outstretched arms.

The bot will also feature hands similar to humans and 40 electromechanical actuators in its joints. There will be a screen on its face that will display information.

Made of unknown lightweight materials, the bot will leverage Tesla’s full-self-driving computer, cameras, AI routine, neural nets, object recognition, simulations and much more.

Optimus at Tesla

Elon Musk said that the humanoid robot is the company’s most important product in development at the 2021 Financial Results and Q&A Webcast event on January 26.

This year will witness “a lot of engineering and tooling” work on the humanoid robot, Musk added. Furthermore, he also believes that in the long run, the humanoid robot industry will be more significant than the automobile sector.

Tesla is calling it Optimus internally, after taking the name from the Transformers’ Optimus Prime. The electric vehicle giant claims that the bot will take unprecedented engineering to develop.

The CEO has also speculated that Tesla could become the world’s biggest robotics company by leveraging the autopilot technology that Tesla has been utilising for the ADAS functions of its electric cars.

The Optimus would be utilised in Tesla’s factories. Tesla has been aggressively recruiting for its bot project since November 2021.
