Lok Sabha Elections 2024: Amit Shah promises end to Muslim reservation in Telangana if BJP comes to power

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

Lok Sabha Elections 2024: Shah added that BJP would replace Muslim reservation — as provided by Congress and TRS in Telangana — with reservation for Scheduled Castes (SCs), Scheduled Tribes (STs), and Other Backward Classes (OBCs).

Union Home Minister Amit Shah, announced on Thursday, April 25, that if BJP is voted to power in Telangana, it will end reservation for Muslims in the state. Shah also said his party would replace Muslim reservation provided by Congress and TRS with reservation for Scheduled Castes (SCs), Scheduled Tribes (STs), and Other Backward Classes (OBCs).

“Once voted to power, we will do away with the Muslim reservation granted by Congress and TRS, and will instead provide reservation to SCs, STs and OBCs,” Shah said.

The minister made this statement during a rally in Telangana, where he urged voters to support BJP and ensure victory for Narendra Modi as prime minister once again.

He criticised Congress and the ruling Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS), accusing them of corruption and neglecting people’s welfare. He alleged that both parties were more focused on looting the state than on development.

Shah particularly targeted the Congress and TRS for their stance on the construction of the Ram Mandir in Ayodhya, suggesting that their leaders were upset over the temple’s construction. He claimed that Congress had turned Telangana into an “ATM of Delhi” and accused both parties of having a common goal — to loot the state.

The Union home minister declared Telangana could only prosper under a BJP government and urged voters to bless the party with 12 seats in Telangana and ensure the slogan ‘Abki Baar, 400 Paar!’ becomes a reality. “Telangana can prosper only when the BJP government is at the helm. Press the ‘lotus’ button, choose Modiji, and see development coming!” Shah said.

Promising to bring about change, Shah declared that if BJP comes to power, the party will celebrate September 17 as Hyderabad Liberation Day every year.

Telangana is witnessing a three-way contest between the ruling Congress, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

The southern state has a total of 17 parliamentary constituencies, where voting for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections will take place in a single phase on May 13. The counting of votes will be held on June 4.

Meet Sonal Patel, Congress candidate against Home Minister Amit Shah in Gujarat’s Gandhinagar

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

An architect by profession, Sonal Patel earlier served as the president of the Gujarat Pradesh Mahila Congress Committee. She is contesting the 2024 elections against Amit Shah.

The Congress party has fielded All India Congress Committee (AICC) secretary Sonal Patel against Union Home Minister and BJP candidate Amit Shah from the Gandhinagar seat in Gujarat, a bastion of the ruling party.

Since 1989, the BJP has been on a winning spree in the Gandhinagar parliamentary constituency. The seat has been represented by BJP stalwart and Bharat Ratna LK Advani six times.

In 2019, BJP named Amit Shah as its candidate for this seat and he secured a massive victory, defeating the rival Congress candidate Chatursinh Javanji Chavda by over 5.5 lakh votes.

For the 2024 elections, the Congress has pitted Sonal Patel from the Gandhinagar seat against Amit Shah, who is eyeing a second consecutive term from here.

Patel, who is also the party co-incharge of Mumbai and western Maharashtra, told PTI that she does not feel hesitant at all to compete against the veteran BJP leader.

Who is Sonal Patel?

An architect by profession, Patel currently serves as the All India Congress Committee (AICC) secretary. The 62-year-old’s father was a municipal councillor from Naranpura representing the grand old party.

“From a grassroots worker from Naranpura, he (Amit Shah) has risen to be the home minister of the country. My father was a Congress municipal councillor from Naranpura and we have seen him grow. I have also worked my way up from grassroots like him,” Patel told PTI.

Patel studied architecture at the Centre of Environment Planning and Technology (CEPT) University. Besides being an urban and regional planner, she is also a member of several architecture organisations. Before being elevated to the post of AICC secretary, Patel served as the president of the Gujarat Pradesh Mahila Congress Committee between 2012 and 2018.

She is all set to file her nomination papers on April 16 and said that she plans to do the same without any pomp and show.

“I have decided to go with just four or five women to file the nomination… Why give trouble to party workers?” she said.

Patel was recently in the news when a video in which she was seen being stopped from campaigning in the Pethapur village in Gandhinagar went viral. This came amid controversy over Union Minister and BJP’s Rajkot candidate Parshottam Rupala’s remarks against the Rajput or Kshatriya community.

Speaking to PTI, Patel noted that the Congress was not linked to the controversy in any way and has even criticised Rupala’s remark against the Kshatriya community. She claimed that the people who stopped her from entering the village were ‘BJP workers’. They did so as they cannot campaign in villages dominated by the Kshatriya community, she added.

The BJP won all 26 Lok Sabha seats in Gujarat in the 2014 and 2019 general elections.

Voting for the 2024 elections in the state will be held in a single phase on May 7. The counting of votes will be done on June 4.

Centre to consider revoking AFSPA, plans to pull back troops from J&K in place, says Amit Shah

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

Amit Shah said the assembly elections will be held in J-K before September.”Enshrining democracy in J&K is PM Modi’s promise and it will be fulfilled. However, this democracy will not be confined to three families alone and will be a people’s democracy,” he said.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah said the central government will consider revoking the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act in Jammu and Kashmir.

In an interview with the JK Media Group, Shah also said the government has plans to pull back troops in the Union Territory (UT) and leave law and order to the Jammu and Kashmir Police alone.

“We have plans to pull back troops and leave law and order to the Jammu and Kashmir Police alone. Earlier, the Jammu and Kashmir police was not trusted but today they are leading the operations,” he said.

On the controversial AFSPA, the Home Minister said, “We will also think of revoking AFSPA.” The AFSPA gives the armed forces personnel, operating in the disturbed areas, sweeping powers to search, arrest, and open fire if they deem it necessary for “the maintenance of public order”.

An area or district is notified as disturbed under the AFSPA to facilitate the operations of the armed forces.

Shah had earlier said the AFSPA has been removed in 70% of areas in the northeastern states even though it is in force in Jammu and Kashmir.

There have been demands from various organisations and individuals in J-K and the northeastern states to revoke the AFSPA.

Shah said the assembly elections will be held in J-K before September.

“Enshrining democracy in Jammu and Kashmir is Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s promise and it will be fulfilled. However, this democracy will not be confined to three families alone and will be a people’s democracy,” he said.

The Supreme Court had directed to conduct the assembly polls in the UT before September.

On the issues that have emerged around the reservation of SCs, STs and OBCs, Shah said for the first time, the OBCs of J-K have been given reservation by the Modi government and women have been given one-third reservation.

“OBC reservations have been made in the panchayat and the urban local bodies. We have made space for the SCs and the STs. Without reducing the share of the Gujjar and Bakarwals, the Pahadis have been given a 10% reservation. And special provisions have been made to accommodate the displaced people from Pakistan-occupied Kashmir,” he said.

The Centre is determined to ensure that these benefits percolate to the grassroots level, he said.

Shah claimed that National Conference (NC) leader Farooq Abdullah and PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti tried their best to create acrimony on these reservations but the people have understood their intentions now.

He asked why the NC did not give reservation to these people in the last over 75 years.

The home minister claimed Abdullah had left for England when terrorism was at its peak. Both Abdullah and Mehbooba have no right to speak about the issue, he added.

“The number of fake encounters that took place during their time has never been matched by any other regime,” he said.

Shah said in the last five years, not a single fake encounter has taken place. Rather the FIRs have been lodged against the people involved in fake encounters, he added.

“We will have a dialogue with the youths of Kashmir and not with the organisations that have roots in Pakistan. They are responsible for the deaths of 40,000 youths,” he said.

He said the Modi government has banned 12 organisations for their involvement in terror activities, designated 36 individuals as terrorists, registered more than 22 cases to stop terror finance and seized properties worth Rs 150 crore.

As many as 90 properties were also attached and 134 bank accounts have been frozen, he said.

“We have enshrined peace, and peace cannot be bought. Whoever wants to have a dialogue has to do so within the ambit of the Constitution,” he said.

Shah said the Hurriyat Conference has no place in the process of dialogue. He also made it clear that the BJP and the entire Parliament believe that the PoK is an integral part of India.

“The Muslim brothers are also Indians and the Hindu brothers living in PoK are also Indians and the land which has been illegally occupied by Pakistan also belongs to India. It is the goal of every Indian, every Kashmiri to get it back,” he said.

The home minister said in 2010, there were 2,564 incidents of stone-pelting which now is zero. From 2004 to 2014, there were 7,217 terror incidents. That has reduced to 2,227 from 2014 to 2023, and this is almost a 70% reduction, he said.

Shah said the total number of deaths from 2004 to 2014 was 2,829 and it has come down to 915 during 2014-23, which is a 68% decrease.

The death of civilians was 1770 and has decreased to 341, which is an 81% drop. The deaths of security forces decreased from 1,060 to 574, which is a 46% decrease, he said.

The senior BJP leader said without the support of the people, such a comprehensive change can never take place.

“The people who talk about Islam should know that 85% of the deceased were our Muslim brothers and sisters,” he said.

Shah also asked the youths of J-K to stay away from the conspiracies of Pakistan.

“Today Pakistan is shrouded by the scourge of hunger and poverty and even people there see Kashmir as heaven. I want to tell everyone that if anyone can save Kashmir, he is Prime Minister Modi,” he said.

The home minister said the Modi government is boosting the morale of the security forces by giving jobs to the family members of the martyrs.

“Today, not a single martyr’s family is left without a job,” he said.

Lok Sabha elections 2024: Gandhinagar to Surat, key seats in Gujarat

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

Of the 26 seats in Gujarat, two are reserved for Scheduled Caste (SC) candidates and four for Scheduled Tribes (ST).

The 2024 general elections will be held in India in seven phases starting on April 19 and concluding on June 1. Voting for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections in Gujarat, the home state of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah will take place in a single phase on May 7. The counting of votes will be held on June 4.

Gujarat, which has 26 parliamentary constituencies, is expected to play a key role in determining the outcome of polls for the Lower House of the Parliament.

Considered a stronghold of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), the state has witnessed a saffron sweep in the last two Lok Sabha elections. In 2019, the BJP secured a victory across all the 26 seats in the state with a 62.21% vote share.

Of the 26 seats in Gujarat, two are reserved for Scheduled Caste (SC) candidates and four for Scheduled Tribes (ST). In the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, the BJP is eyeing another clean sweep in the state, while Congress and Arvind Kejriwal-led Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) are part of the Opposition’s INDIA bloc.

Here’s a look at the Lok Sabha seats to watch out for in Gujarat:

  1. Gandhinagar

A BJP bastion, this urban seat sent stalwarts like former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee and LK Advani to Parliament. In the 2019 polls, Amit Shah contested from here and defeated the rival Congress candidate, CJ Chavda, by over 5.57 lakh votes.

  1. Rajkot

The BJP has secured consistent wins from this seat since 1989, except for the 2009 polls when Congress’ Kunvarji Bavalia defeated BJP’s Kirankumar Patel. In the last two general elections, this seat was represented by BJP’s Mohan Kundariya in Parliament. However, this time, the party has fielded Union Minister Parshottam Rupala from this constituency.

  1. Porbandar

Yet another BJP stronghold, this seat has a large number of Leuva Patidars, a sub-caste of the electorally and numerically strong Patel community. Union Minister Mansukh Mandaviya, a Leuva Patidar, will be representing the BJP from this seat in the 2024 polls. He hails from Gujarat’s Bhavnagar district and has so far reached the Parliament through the Rajya Sabha route.

  1. Surat

Surat, the world’s diamond polishing hub, has embraced the BJP since 1989. In the last three general elections, Union Minister Darshana Jardosh has been elected from this seat, having won in 2014 and 2019 by a margin of over 5 lakh votes. The seat earlier sent former Prime Minister Morarji Desai and veteran BJP leader Kashiram Rana to the Lok Sabha. Desai, the first non-Congress PM of India, won from this seat five times, including in the post-Emergency polls of 1977.

  1. Bharuch

BJP leader Mansukh Vasava has been winning from this seat since 1999. Before him, Chandubhai Deshmukh represented the party from here for a long time. Last time, Vasava won by a margin of 3.3 lakh votes, defeating Congress candidate Sherkhan Pathan.

In the 2024 elections, this predominantly tribal seat will see Mansukh Vasava contesting against AAP’s Dediapada MLA Chaitar Vasava. The Bharuch parliamentary constituency has also been represented by Congress leader, late Ahmed Patel in the past.

  1. Vadodara

Vadodara was represented by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2014. However, later in the by-elections, BJP’s Ranjanben Dhananjay Bhatt won from this seat. In the last general elections, she won by over 5.89 lakh votes. The constituency has been a BJP stronghold since 1998.

In Gujarat, the BJP is aiming to retain all 26 Lok Sabha seats, while the Congress is contesting the 2024 general elections in alliance with the Arvind Kejriwal-led Aam Aadmi Party (AAP).

The Election Commission last week announced that the 2024 general elections will be conducted in seven phases from April 19 to June 1. The counting of votes is scheduled for June 4. Gujarat, widely recognised as a stronghold of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), has 26 parliamentary constituencies. The state will go to polls in a single phase on May 7.

It’s the home state of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah and is poised to play a key role in determining the outcome of elections for the Lower House of the Parliament.

During the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, the BJP registered a massive victory across all 26 seats in the state, securing a 62.21% vote share, while the Congress party could only manage 32.11%. The BJP secured a clean sweep in the state during the 2014 polls as well.

The BJP is once again aiming to retain all 26 Lok Sabha seats in the state, while the Congress is contesting the elections in alliance with the Arvind Kejriwal-led Aam Aadmi Party (AAP).

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s enduring influence — often considered a trump card for the BJP in Gujarat — remains a significant factor in the state this time. PM Modi has served as the chief minister of Gujarat for over a decade.

On the other side, the Opposition parties will be striving to reclaim their footing in the state in the 2024 elections.

NDA will win over 400 seats in Lok Sabha elections, Home Minister Amit Shah reiterates

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

Rising Bharat Summit 2024: The Union Home Minister Amit Shah also lashed out at the opposition parties while responding to a question on electoral bonds.

The Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP)-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) will cross 400 seats in the upcoming election for the Lok Sabha (the lower house of the Indian Parliament), Home Minister Amit Shah asserted in a conversation with Rahul Joshi, Editor-in-Chief of Network 18, at the Rising Bharat Summit.

Shah also said that the NDA will improve its performance in Uttar Pradesh, increasing its tally from the 2019 election.

In Uttar Pradesh, the BJP-led NDA is projected to win 77 seats in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections 2024 with a 57% vote share, according to a News18 Opinion Poll. The poll added that the ruling alliance under PM Modi’s leadership is on course for a hattrick of terms.

He’s also confident that the alliances forged with local leaders will help the party’s tally in Odisha and Bihar too.

Why Amit Shah is confidence of a record win in the Lok Sabha election?

He believes that voters would reinforce faith in the party for taking the Indian economy from the eleventh position (by size) during the Atal Behari Vajpayee’s regime (1999-2004) to the fifth largest in the world now.

He listed the abrogation of Article 370 (which took away special status accorded to Jammu and Kashmir) the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), and the construction of the Ram Temple, aboltion of triple talaq and the introduction of the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in Uttarakhand as some of the government’s key achievements in the last ten years.

According to Shah, violence in Kashmir, the north-eastern states and in the areas affected by the far-left Naxalites is down over 75% under the Modi administration.

Amit Shah’s response to the revelations in electoral bonds

The recent revelations from the data on the sale of electoral bonds revealed that the BJP was the biggest beneficiary of the funding mechanism that was held to be unconstitutional by the Supreme Court of India.

“In my personal opinion, black money will return after the abolition of electoral bonds. Congress was against electoral bonds as they want to cut money back through cash donations,” Shah said lashing out at the opposition.

“They (Congress) used to take donations and deposit them in Swiss Bank. Rahul ji believes in building personal wealth,” he added.

The party has come under fire from its rivals who allege that the incumbent government misused the state apparatus like the Enforcement Directorate (ED) and the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to force donations to party. However, according to Shah, the government agencies acted solely on the merits of the case at hand not based on political motivations.

“They want a system that there should be no action on politicians. 51 crore seized from Mamata ji’s minister. 350 crore from Congress MP house. What do they think, people are not watching?” he added.

No trust deficit with BJP over seat-sharing in Karnataka, says JD(S) leader H D Kumaraswamy

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

The former Chief Minister asserted that there is no confusion in the ties between BJP and JD(S), as he expressed hope that the issue over giving Kolar seat to the regional party “will be clear”.

A day after indicating unhappiness over the seat-sharing issue with BJP for the upcoming Lok Sabha polls in Karnataka, JD(S) leader H D Kumaraswamy on Tuesday said it did not mean that there is a trust deficit between the two parties.

The former Chief Minister asserted that there is no confusion in the ties between BJP and JD(S), as he expressed hope that the issue over giving Kolar seat to the regional party “will be clear”.

Apparently expressing displeasure over the seat sharing issue, Kumaraswamy on Monday said he has faith that his party will get three to four seats, amid reports that the saffron party may cede it only two.

He had also said his party leaders have asked him to communicate to the BJP leadership about the need to treat the JD(S) “respectfully” and make them understand its strength in at least 18 Lok Sabha segments.

“Yesterday after the JD(S) core committee members and leaders meeting, I shared information regarding discussions held in our party regarding the communication gap between both parties regarding — BJP and JD(S) working together with trust in all the 28 Lok Sabha segments,” Kumaraswamy, who is JD(S) state President, said.

Speaking to reporters here, he said, “With regards to seat sharing, as I said yesterday, from the beginning, we have asked for three seats. From the BJP side, whether it is its high command or friends in the state, till this moment they have not given any clarity regarding the specified number of seats for us to contest.”

Further stating that Union Home Minister Amit Shah during his several meetings with him, after the alliance, has always treated JD(S)’ request with respect, Kumaraswamy said, his reaction before the media on Monday did not mean that there is trust deficit between the two parties.

“My statement yesterday that — we have asked for three seats, and that, did I have to put effort for just two seats — was reacting to media reports. I did not say it because of the trust deficit between us. I drew your (media) attention in the backdrop of what was discussed in our core committee meeting,” he added.

JD(S) joined the NDA last September and has forged an electoral alliance with the BJP. The regional party is expected to contest in three seats — Mandya, Hassan and Kolar — and as per agreement between both parties, noted cardiac surgeon, and Deve Gowda’s son-in-law Dr C N Manjunath has been fielded from Bangalore Rural on a BJP ticket.

However, according to recent reports, the BJP is not ready to cede Kolar’s seat to JD(S), which has irked the regional outfit. BJP’s S Muniswamy is the incumbent Kolar MP.

Stating that there are no issues over the Kolar seat, the JD(S) state Chief indicated that his party will field a candidate in that constituency as well, along with Mandya and Hassan, and claimed that there is an “atmosphere” for the party to win there.

He said he was going to Chennai for medical treatment and would not be available for five days; once he is back the party’s candidates will be announced.

Hitting out at state Congress chief and Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar’s statement taking a dig at JD(S)’ “situation” following an alliance with BJP, Kumaraswamy said the former was the main reason for his party deciding for this alliance. “What has happened to us (in the alliance with BJP)? BJP did not ill-treat me like Congress did,” he said.

Highlighting his “situation” as the Chief Minister heading the Congress-JD(S) coalition government in the past, he said Congress repeatedly “tried to do his character assassination”, while he was trying to resolve issues of the people and giving loan waivers for farmers.

Kumaraswamy, targeting Shivakumar for inviting JD(S) workers to Congress and for taking a dig for fielding Manjunath, said his party workers have not come to a stage where they will have to seek Congress’ “protection.”

He said, “The government that I had earlier headed in alliance with the BJP for 20 months (from January 2006), had instilled a strength in me to make certain decisions, while in the 14 months government with you (Congress) you tried to destroy my party and me politically. Can I forget it?”

Terming his decision to ally with Congress earlier was his “worst decision” in the name of saving secularism, the former CM accused Congress of “setting fire” to his father Deve Gowda’s 60 years of political life.

He said he is aware of Shivakumar and Congress’ efforts to lure JD(S) workers and leaders, especially in Ramanagara, Channapatna and Bengaluru South, by “misusing power, also using money and muscle power.”

In a separate notification, the Union Ministry of Home Affairs also banned four factions of the J-K Peoples League JKPL (Mukhtar Ahmed Waza), JKPL (Bashir Ahmad Tota), JKPL (Ghulam Mohammad Khan) and the Yaqoob Sheikh-led JKPL (Aziz Sheikh).

The PM Modi government has banned the Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front, led by incarcerated terror accused Yasin Malik, the Jammu and Kashmir Peoples Freedom League and four Jammu and Kashmir Peoples League factions for their involvement in fomenting terror and secessionism in the Union territory.

Announcing the decisions, Union Home Minister Amit Shah said anyone found challenging the security, sovereignty and integrity of the nation will face harsh legal consequences.

“The Modi government has declared the ’Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (Mohd. Yasin Malik faction)’ as an ’Unlawful Association’ for a further period of five years,” Shah wrote on ’X’.

The minister said the Jammu and Kashmir Peoples Freedom League, which was also declared a banned group for five years, has threatened India’s integrity by promoting, aiding and abetting secession of Jammu and Kashmir through terrorism.

“The Modi government will remain unsparing to people and organisations involved in terror activities,” he said in another post.

Amit Shah to hold key meetings in Telangana on January 28 ahead of Lok Sabha elections

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

Amit Shah will attend three key meetings at Hyderabad, Karimnagar and Mahabubnagar.

The BJP’s preparations in Telangana for the forthcoming Lok Sabha elections will begin with Union Home Minister Amit Shah attending three key meetings at Hyderabad, Karimnagar and Mahabubnagar on Sunday, January 28.

Shah would attend the election management committee meeting of Mahabubnagar Lok Sabha constituency at 1.30 pm, followed by a polling booth committee meeting of Karimnagar at 4 pm and a convention of professionals of Secunderabad constituency at 6 pm in Hyderabad, BJP sources said on Saturday.

The Mahabubnagar event would be a closed-door event, they said. Shah, who had visited the state on December 28, 2023, had set a target for the party to win at least 10 seats and secure a 35% vote share in Telangana in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

The BJP had won Secunderabad, Karimnagar, Nizamabad and Adilabad constituencies out of the total 17 Lok Sabha seats in Telangana in the 2019 polls. In the recent Telangana Legislative Assembly elections, the BJP won eight out of the total 119 seats.

BJP National General Secretary and Lok Sabha member Bandi Sanjay Kumar on Saturday (January 27) said about 10,000 to 20,000 activists would attend the convention at Karimnagar.

Kumar, who on Friday (January 26) reviewed arrangements for Shah’s meeting, said he would undertake a ‘padayatra’ for about 20 days in villages in his Karimnagar constituency from February 5 and explain about the Centre’s development activities to the people.
