Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

Mukesh Kumar hit the deck with a short ball that Dhoni pulled towards the square leg boundary for a four in his very first delivery. Khaleel Ahmed dropped him at point in the following ball, before Dhoni clobbered the ball over covers for a boundary again to wrap up the over.

MS Dhoni walked out to bat for the first time in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 in Vizag in the 17th over of the chase.

Delhi Capitals (DC) speedster Mukesh Kumar hit the deck with a short ball that Dhoni pulled towards the square leg boundary for a four in his very first delivery. Khaleel Ahmed dropped him at point in the following ball, before Dhoni clobbered the ball over covers for a boundary again to wrap up the over.

CSK lost that momentum for a slight bit in the next over, befor Dhoni clobbered the ball over covers for a huge maximum in the penultimate delivery of the 18th over.

Dhoni rounded off his knock by smashing 37* off 16 deliveries, hitting 20 in the final over against South African speedster Anrich Nortje. He walked out to bat at No. 8 in the order, but made the limited balls that he got count by getting CSK within 20 runs of the DC target due to his late heroics.

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

With extraordinary milestones to its name, the Cultural Centre has emerged as a key change-maker in India’s art and culture landscape.

The Nita Mukesh Ambani Cultural Centre (NMACC), inaugurated on March 31, 2023, has marked a remarkable first year. The first-of-its-kind multidisciplinary art and culture destination over the year has seen over a million visitors, staged over 700 shows across five world-class venues, highlighted the work of over 670 exceptional artists, and presented four notable visual art exhibitions.

Speaking on the occasion, Founder & Chairperson Nita Ambani said, “It is with a deep sense of pride, joy, and gratitude that we celebrate the first anniversary of our Cultural Centre. In the past year at NMACC, over a million audiences have witnessed blockbuster Indian theatricals, breathtaking global performances, stunning artworks, and traditional handicrafts from all over India. We are grateful for the love and support of our audience, and the trust and enthusiasm of our artists. It’s been an extraordinary year of firsts, showcasing the best of India and the world. And our journey has only just begun!”

The Cultural Centre’s grand opening in 2023, under the guidance of Nita Ambani showcased the best of India and the world. Spanning over three days, art and culture enthusiasts gathered for the first glimpse of the Cultural Centre’s India-inspired presentations, with India’s largest ever theatrical production, ‘The Great Indian Musical: Civilization to Nation’; ‘India in Fashion’, a one-of-a-kind costume art exhibit; and ‘Sangam/Confluence’, a unique visual art show that inaugurated the Art House.

Subsequently, the Cultural Centre has thrilled audiences with a plethora of renowned international performances and exhibitions, including the much-anticipated debuts of Broadway and West End in the country. Upholding Nita Ambani’s commitment to safeguarding and advancing India’s cultural heritage for forthcoming generations, ‘SWADESH by Reliance Foundation’, the Centre’s distinctive exposition of art and craft, has showcased nearly 30 varied art forms from all corners of India.

A year and many milestones later, The Grand Theatre – the Cultural Centre’s 2000-seater performing arts marvel – has brought together the finest Indian talent for an array of exclusive anniversary programming. The celebrations kick started on March 30 with Amit Trivedi followed by ace vocalist Kaushiki Chakraborty, who played a tribute to the legendary divas of Indian Classical music on March 31st. Meanwhile musical icons Ajay-Atul will perform their beloved hits on April 6th, and singer Aditya Gadhvi of ‘Khalasi’ fame, will showcase the best of Gujarati folk music on April 7th.

The Studio Theatre and The Cube too, have a host of intimate experiences lined up, with a captivating mix of shows across eclectic genres such as Classical, Sufi, and Indie music, contemporary dance, and theatre. Not limiting the celebratory atmosphere to ticketed events, live music acts and performances are expected to take over every corner of the Centre.

To commemorate its anniversary, The Art House has unveiled ‘Liminal Gaps’ (March 31st – June 9th), a captivating exhibition featuring immersive and interactive installations by prominent contemporary Indian artists. Among them are Ayesha Singh, Raqs Media Collective, Asim Waqif, and Afrah Shaqif, showcasing some of their most ambitious projects to date. Curated by Mafalda Millies Kahane and Roya Sachs, with executive production by Elizabeth Edelman Sachs of TRIADIC, this marks the Centre’s inaugural exhibition dedicated solely to the talents of Indian artists.

Looking beyond its anniversary festivities, NMACC will kick off the summer season with the highly anticipated debut of The Royal Shakespeare Company’s ‘Matilda the Musical’ at The Grand Theatre, premiering in India on May 16th. Additionally, renowned Bharatanatyam exponent Padma Shri Shobana and her ensemble will grace Mumbai with their mesmerizing performance, ‘Celebrating the Supreme by Shobana and Ensemble’, blending traditional and contemporary elements to offer audiences an unforgettable fusion of the art form.

With a rich repository of firsts to draw from, the Nita Mukesh Ambani Cultural Centre is set to continue its incredible journey – changing how people engage with art and culture.

DC vs CSK: Who is Rasikh Salam? Kashmiri pacer who was banned by BCCI for age fraud

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

The speedster actually made his debut for the Mumbai Indians in the IPL way back in 2019. Ahead of that season, MI had acquired him in the auction and there was a lot of hype around him for being only the third player from Jammu & Kashmir to play in the IPL.

As Delhi Capitals (DC) stepped on the field to defend 191 against the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in Vizag in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 on Sunday, a familiar face came in as the Impact Player for the former.

Rasikh Salam, a 23-year-old pacer from Kashmir, rolled over his arms for DC in the middle overs. The speedster actually made his debut for the Mumbai Indians in the IPL way back in 2019.

Ahead of that season, MI had acquired him in the auction for 20 lakhs and there was a lot of hype around him for being only the third player from Jammu & Kashmir to play in the IPL, after Parvez Rasool was signed for the Pune Warriors India in 2011 and Manzoor Dar joined the Punjab Kings in 2018.

Regardless, Rasikh debuted for MI against the Delhi Capitals (DC) at the Wankhede Stadium in 2019. He didn’t have much to show for, failing to pick any wicket, and he was soon relegated to the bench. The bowler gave away 42 in four wicketless overs, and didn’t get a game later in the campaign.

However, later that year, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) banned Rasikh for two years following the discovery of a discrepancy in the submission of his birth certificate to the authorities.

Back then, he was named in the Indian U-19 squad for the triangular one-day series against Bangladesh and England. However, the BCCI immediately replaced him with Prabhat Maurya. Rasikh was roped in by the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) before IPL 2022 too, but he didn’t deliver great returns there either. Regardless, he has constantly been in the radar of IPL teams.

Prior to his maiden appearance for DC, Rasikh played three games without any scalps in the competition. He conceded runs at 8.75 per over, but will be keen to get his first dismissal under his belt in the current campaign.

Avartana to Freny’s – check out Mumbai’s newest culinary gems

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

Take a look at the newly opened restaurants in Mumbai where the design draws you in and keeps you hooked while the chef whips up a wholesome meal.

In a bustling metropolis like Mumbai, where new restaurants emerge almost every week, simply showcasing mouth-watering food isn’t enough to captivate attention. We shed light on the newly opened restaurants where the design draws you in and keeps you hooked while the chef whips up a wholesome meal.

Avartana |

Chennai’s Avartana that recently made it to the influential list of Asia’s Top 50 restaurants list has made its way to Mumbai. Named after the Sanskrit term evoking rhythm, mysticism, and magic, Avartana was established in Chennai in 2017, aiming to present diners with a vibrant array of South Indian flavours spanning from Kerala to Telangana. The menus, ranging from 7 to 13 courses, are titled Maya (seven courses, price starts at 2,500), Bela, Jiaa, Anika, and Tara (13 courses, priced at 4,750) which are bite sized courses. With the exception of Tara, which highlights coastal presentations, all menus offer both vegetarian and non-vegetarian options.

Diipti Jadhav, Senior Sous Chef at ITC Maratha Mumbai and Chef in charge of Avartana, emphasises the growing awareness among guests regarding mindful, sustainable, and smart eating. She notes the rising popularity of fresh indigenous produce, regional millets, homemade preserves, probiotic food, and regional pounded masalas. The increased footfall at farmers’ markets in the city reflects this trend.

The demand for artisanal food stems from a desire for authentic and unique dining experiences, prioritising traditional cooking techniques and locally sourced seasonal ingredients over mass-produced foods. Guests are willing to pay a premium for handmade, unique dishes that reflect local culture and traditions, providing traceability of ingredients and heritage.

Where: ITC Maratha, Andheri, Mumbai
When: All days, 7 pm to 11 pm
Price: 6,000 for two approx.

La Panthera

La Panthera is a one-of-a-kind blend, stitching together culinary memories from Europe, almost sparking a sense of longing. The ambience gives us all the right feels as if your teleported to Europe. The stand out dishes for us were the Beetroot Carpaccio, Baked Brie, Lobster Roll, La Panthera Pizza and the Tiramisu La Panthera Way.

“Our menu embraces timeless European classics while playfully dancing with contemporary culinary techniques. Our ethos has always been simple, refined cooking where we let the ingredients shine. Elegant plating is the signature touch and exceptional taste reigns supreme” says Manuel Olveira, Owner and Chef – La Panthera.

Where: Unit 1 & 2, G Block, BKC, Mumbai
When: All days
Price: Rs 2,500 onwards per person

Lyla

Why does Mexican food have such a strong emotional connection with Mumbai people? It turns out that a number of things are at play. I started my meal at Lyla with my favourite Mexican appetizer, Summer Garden Guacamole served with tortilla chips. One of the standouts were the Ají Lima Churros. I was completely amazed, these churros with chilli lime spice were light, crunchy, and melted in my mouth —a savoury twist on a meal that is often relished sweet. My personal favourite was the Ciopinno, a seafood preparation that featured prawns, mussels, clams and squid floating in a tomatoey broth. The best part was that I suggested making room for the desserts. You have the option to choose from traditional dishes like Monstruo Churros and the Big Apple that are absolutely a must try.

Chef Beena Noronha, Corporate Chef, Chrome Asia Hospitality says, “The fusion of Mexican and Californian cuisines resonates with me, blending the bold, spicy tastes of Mexico with California’s fresh ingredients and innovative techniques. Despite the challenges posed by the lack of success of Mexican restaurants in Mumbai, I approached menu planning by focusing on ingredient celebration rather than adhering strictly to cuisine. Each dish in the menu is carefully crafted to tell a story, aiming to exceed guests’ expectations and stand out in a competitive market. Innovation is always prioritised to deliver a memorable dining experience.”

Where: Plot C/59, Ground Floor, Platina G Block, BKC
When: All days
Price: Rs 2,500 for two

Freny’s – All day dining & bar

What comes to mind when you think of “home”? It could hold various meanings for each of us. However, in one of its most idealistic portrayals, it’s often intertwined with family, comfort, and nostalgia. For food enthusiasts, unbeatable flavour is undoubtedly a crucial addition to that list.

At Freny’s we savoured delectable east Indian cuisine. We were particularly fond of the Cutlet Pav Sliders among the small plates. The Indyal Tacos and Masala Tiger Prawns showcased distinct flavours that stood out remarkably. For those who are chocolate lovers they have also introduced the gooey chocolate Matilda’s Chocolate Cake which was my personal favourite.

Chef Freny says, “It’s literally my heart on a plate! All the dishes I’ve loved as a chef through my life and travels abroad as well as dishes from my heritage and my East Indian Background. From the hot fugyas that are my version of a bread basket that comes on each table, to my dad, Peter’s mutton curry or as many guests call it “uncle peters mutton curry” to my mom Monica’s roast chicken.”

Where: Silver Pearl Building, W, Waterfield Road, opposite China gate, Bandra West, Mumbai
When: All days, 12pm to 12am
Price: Rs 1,000 onwards per persons

Watch: Matheesha Pathirana rattles stumps to dismiss Mitchell Marsh and Tristan Stubbs with classic yorkers

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

Pathirana hit the deck with a medium paced half volley that was pulled with ease to the boundary line by Marsh in the over. However, the Sri Lankan pacer stormed back with a stunning delivery to rattle the stumps of the DC batter.

Matheesha Pathirana produced one of his impeccable yorkers to knock over Mitchell Marsh in the 15th over of the Delhi Capitals (DC) innings against the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in Vizag in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 on Sunday.

Pathirana hit the deck with a medium paced half volley that was pulled with ease to the boundary line by Marsh in the over. However, the Sri Lankan pacer stormed back with a stunning delivery to rattle the stumps of the DC batter.

He followed this with a similar delivery that broke the stumps of South African batter Tristan Stubbs, with both overseas batters failing to overcome the slingy yorkers that the tearaway fast bowler came up with.

The interesting facet about these yorkers was that Pathirana ensured that his deliveries took a slight inwards movement when it reached the batters. It beat their line of defence and caught them completely on the backfoot.

Commentators on air couldn’t stop praising the skill that went behind these deliveries. They dazzled into the stumps and uprooted them easily, thus helping CSK stop DC from running away with the innings.

Watch: Matheesha Pathirana takes stunning catch to dismiss David Warner in DC-CSK IPL clash

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

Pathirana was stationed inside the circle and jumped to perfection to take this one-handed catch that could turn around the fortunes for CSK in this game.

Matheesha Pathirana took a screamer of a catch in the 10th over of the match between the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and the Delhi Capitals (DC) in Vizag in their Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 fixture on Sunday.

Warner got back in his groove with the bat in this match, taking time to get his eye in before unleashing a barrage of boundaries upon DC later on.

Warner put the ball past the boundary line eight times. He notched five boundaries and three sixes to get to 52 off 35, pouncing upon the deliveries that landed in his arc to to send them past the fence.

He batted at a strike rate of 148.57, playing the perfect foil for Prithvi Shaw. The latter made a return to the playing XI in this match, and made that chance count by scoring 43 off 27 deliveries with the help of four boundaries and a couple of maximums.

Rishabh Pant promoted himself higher up the order to ensure that the right-left batting combination continued after the dimissal of Warner. However, Shaw was sent packing soon afterwards by Ravindra Jadeja, bringing Mitchell Marsh back into the scheme of things after opening the batting in the last two matches.

Government cuts deep sea natural gas price to $9.87 per mmBtu

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

The price for difficult area gas continues to be governed by the old formula that takes a one-year average of international LNG prices and rates at some global gas hubs with a lag of one quarter.

The government on Sunday March 31 cut the price of natural gas produced from difficult areas like deep sea marginally to $9.87 per million British thermal unit (mmBtu) in line with softening of benchmark international gas prices, an official notification said. However, the price of gas that is used for making CNG for fuelling automobiles or piping to household kitchens for cooking purposes will remain unchanged due to a price cap that is set at 30% less than market rates.

For the six-month period starting April 1, the price of gas from deepsea and high-pressure, high-temperature (HPTP) areas has been cut to $9.87 per mmBtu from $9.96, oil ministry’s Petroleum Planning and Analysis Cell (PPAC) said in a notification. This is the third straight bi-annual reduction in rates for difficult fields.

Price was for six months beginning October 1, 2023 slashed 18% to $9.96 per mmBtu from $12.12 for the April to September 2023 period. Prior to that, the rate was a record $12.46 for October 2022 to March 2023. The government bi-annually fixes prices of the locally-produced natural gas – which is converted into CNG for use in automobiles, piped to household kitchens for cooking and used to generate electricity and make fertilisers.

Two different formulas govern rates paid for gas produced from legacy or old fields of national oil companies like Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) and Oil India Ltd (OIL), and for newer fields lying in difficult-to-tap areas, such as deep sea. Rates are fixed on April 1 and October 1 each year.

In April last year, the formula governing legacy fields was changed and indexed to 10% of the prevailing Brent crude oil price. The rate was, however, capped at $6.5 per mmBtu. Rates for legacy fields are now decided on a monthly basis. For April, the price came to $8.38 per mmBtu but because of the cap, the producers would get only $6.5 per mmBtu, the PPAC said.

The price for difficult area gas continues to be governed by the old formula that takes a one-year average of international LNG prices and rates at some global gas hubs with a lag of one quarter. International prices had fallen in 2023 and so it will translate into lower prices for difficult fields starting October.

India is aiming to become a gas-based economy with the share of natural gas in its primary energy mix targeted to rise to 15% by 2030 from the existing level of around 6.3%.

England left-arm pacer David Willey has pulled out of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 citing personal reasons on Saturday. Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) have replaced him with New Zealand speedster Matt Henry.

Willey dropped out of international cricket following the ICC Men’s ODI World Cup in 2023. He also missed out of the LSG squad for their opening IPL fixture against the Rajasthan Royals in Jaipur.

The fast bowler joins the list of English players to have left their IPL commitments after securing contracts with their respective franchises. Jason Roy had done so with the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Mark Wood followed the same for LSG.

Wood was in fact promoted by the England & Wales Cricket Board (ECB) to take extra care of his workload as the Three Lions prepare to put up a strong challenge to defend their ICC Men’s T20 World Cup crown in the tournament that will be co-hosted by the United States of America (USA) and the West Indies in June.

Henry has played previously for the Punjab Kings and the Chennai Super Kings (CSK). Overall, he has represented New Zealand 17 times in T20Is. Henry has taken 20 wickets at a bowling average of 8.13 and bowling strike rate of 18.3.

His average stands at a respectable 24.8 with the ball. Henry is best known for taking the key wickets of Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul that triggered the Indian collapse in the semi-final between the two countries at Old Trafford in Manchester in June 2019.

Cong gets fresh I-T notice of over ₹1,745 crore, total tax demand rises to Rs 3567 crore

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

According to sources, the fresh tax notices relate to 2014-15 (₹663 crore), 2015-16 (around ₹664 crore) and 2016-17 (around ₹417 crore).

In mounting trouble for the Congress, sources in the party said it has received fresh notices from the Income Tax department, raising a tax demand of 1,745 crore for the assessment years 2014-15 to 2016-17. With this latest notice, the Income Tax department has raised a total demand of 3,567 crore from the Congress.

According to sources, the fresh tax notices relate to 2014-15 (663 crore), 2015-16 (around 664 crore) and 2016-17 (around 417 crore). The authorities have ended the tax exemption available to political parties and have taxed the party for the entire collections, they added. The Congress has also been taxed for “third-party entries” made in diaries seized from some of its leaders by probe agencies during raids, the sources said.

The main opposition party on Friday said that it has received notices from the I-T department, asking it to pay around 1,823 crore. The tax authorities have already withdrawn 135 crore from the party’s accounts for a tax demand relating to previous years.

The Congress has moved the court against the 135 crore tax demand and the case is likely to come up before the Supreme Court on Monday April 1. The party has failed to get any relief from the High Court of the Income Tax Appellate Tribunal in this regard.

Congress leaders have contended that similar third-party entries naming BJP leaders in other diaries have not been levied any tax. They have accused the BJP of indulging in “tax terrorism” and financially crippling the principal opposition party during the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. They are disturbing the level playing field during elections, the Congress has alleged. It has also complained to the Election Commission in this regard and urged it to maintain a level playing field.

Mumbai Congress chief Varsha Gaikwad dubbed the fresh notice from the income tax department a bid for extortion and an act of revenge by the Central government after the BJP’s electoral bonds “scam” was exposed. “The Income Tax notice was issued on the orders of the Central government. Why didn’t the I-T department serve a notice to the BJP?” Gaikwad questioned while speaking to reporters.

She alleged the BJP-led “dictatorial regime” was making a last-ditch attempt to weaken the Congress financially sensing imminent defeat in elections. She said ahead of the poll code, the I-T department froze 11 bank accounts of the Congress and took out 135 crore directly.

“All this has been done out of revenge after the BJP’s electoral bonds scam was exposed,” the Congress leader alleged. “Elections must be conducted in a free and fair atmosphere. The situation is conducive for a power change,” she added.

DC vs CSK: How MS Dhoni prevented Sameer Rizvi from having his favourite jersey number for Chennai Super Kings

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

Rizvi was roped in for ₹8.4 crores by CSK in the player auctions before IPL 2024. He notched 309 runs in 10 innings, striking at 137.33, comprising two half-centuries for his state team Uttar Pradesh (UP). Dubbed as the right-handed version of Suresh Raina, Rizvi has gained popularity for his big-hitting skills, something that the CSK hopes to encash upon in this campaign.

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) batter Sameer Rizvi became the talk of the town after smashed 14 off six deliveries, including two sixes against Rashid Khan, in their clash against the Gujarat Titans (GT) at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chepauk earlier this week.

Speaking about his jersey number, the 20-year-old Meerut batter said, “My jersey number is seven, which is currently worn by (Dhoni) Bhaiya and I can’t get it. So, I liked the number 1, and I took it.” Rizvi also talked about the positive atmosphere in the CSK dressing room.

“Everyone loves each other in the team and backs everyone. The thought process of hitting the six in my first ball came out of my heart, and the team members also cheered for me with all their hearts,” he said.

“Whenever I have a query in mind, I ask everyone in the team, be it in batting or fielding, about their mentality while going to bat. Learning these small things would benefit me in the long run,” he concluded.

CSK have managed a prolific start to the IPL season, winning both their games so far. They will be eyeing their third straight victory in the clash against Delhi Capitals (DC) at the ACA-VDCA Cricket Stadium in Vizag on Sunday.
