Adani Group opens South Asia’s largest ammunition, missiles complex

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

Adani Defence Y Aerospace has invested over ₹3,000 crore in the factories that are spread over 500 acres and will manufacture a full spectrum of ammunition.

Adani Group on Monday (February 26) announced the opening of two mega facilities to manufacture ammunition and missiles – the largest in South Asia – as it consolidates its presence in defence manufacturing.

Adani Defence Y Aerospace has invested over 3,000 crore in the factories that are spread over 500 acres and will manufacture a full spectrum of ammunition.

“These cutting-edge facilities, which are first of their kind in the private sector in India, will provide a significant impetus to the nation’s self-reliance and technological advancement in defence,” it said in a statement.

The facilities were inaugurated by Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, Chief of Army Staff Gen Manoj Pande and GOC-in-C of Central Command Lt Gen N. S. Raja Subramani.

“The unveiling of the facilities coincided with the fifth anniversary of the Balakot airstrike ‘Operation Bandar’, a historic operation by the Indian Air Force that was a testimony to India’s strategic assertiveness over external threats,” the statement said.

Spread over 500 acres, the facility in Kanpur is set to become one of the largest integrated ammunition manufacturing complexes. It will produce high-quality small, medium and large-calibre ammunition for the armed forces, paramilitary forces and police.

The facility has started rolling out small calibre ammunition, starting with 150 million rounds estimated at 25% of India’s annual requirement.

Speaking on the occasion, Adityanath said it would be a proud moment when ammunition and missiles produced in these facilities will help in securing the nation.

Emphasizing the need for self-reliance in missiles and ammunition, Chief of Army Staff Gen Manoj Pande said, “Recent geopolitical events have reemphasized the need for a reliable supply from internal sources for ammunition in preparedness for a long-drawn conflict.

Such large investments and the willingness of Adani Defence & Aerospace to indigenize critical technologies have built confidence in the users to depend on Indian private industry for strategic military supplies. This complex is a major milestone in India’s journey towards self-reliance in the defence sector.”

Adani Defence & Aerospace is the flagship defence company of the Adani Group. It is also focused on developing and offering unique capabilities across the unmanned segment, counter drones, intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance technologies and cyber defence.

Ashish Rajvanshi, CEO of Adani Defence & Aerospace, said, “The establishment of these ammunition and missile complexes represents a leap forward in our quest for self-reliance.

With a planned investment of over 3,000 crore, its impact extends far beyond the defence sector. It will create over 4,000 jobs, with five times the multiplier effect on MSMEs and the local ecosystem benefiting from it indirectly.”

The ammunition complex started operations in less than two years of its announcement by the Adani Group during the Uttar Pradesh Investors’ Summit in 2022.

Yogi Adityanath govt raises sugarcane price by ₹20 per quintal in Uttar Pradesh

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

After today’s hike in sugarcane SAP, the Yogi government has raised the cumulative support price by ₹55 per quintal in the last seven years.

In Uttar Pradesh, the Yogi Adityanath government on Thursday, January 18, raised the state-advised price (SAP) for sugarcane by 20 per quintal, a few months ahead of the Lok Sabha election 2024. The decision was taken at a cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath.

The early variety will fetch 370 per quintal and the common variety price will be 360 per quintal, Minister, Sugar Industry and Cane Development Department, Laxmi Narayan Chaudhary, briefed reporters in the state capital Lucknow.

The UP government was earlier paying 335 per quintal for the early variety of sugarcane and  340 per quintal for the common variety. The top variety of sugarcane fetched 350 per quintal.

In addition to the Centre deciding the fair and remunerative price (FRP) on the crop, the SAP is determined by the governments of sugar-producing states, factoring in the cost of production in specific regions.

The Yogi government first raised the sugarcane SAP by 10 in 2017 after coming to power. It was further raised by 25 per quintal in 2021 before the UP assembly elections in 2022.

After today’s hike in sugarcane SAP, the Yogi government has raised the cumulative support price by 55 per quintal in the last seven years.

As per a News18 Hindi report, the Yogi government has cleared the arrears worth 2.2 lakh crore in the last six years in Uttar Pradesh.

Meanwhile, Bhartiya Kisan Union (BKU) termed the cane price hike insufficient, news agency Press Trust of India (PTI) reported.

Talking with reporters at BKU headquarters at Sisauli near Muzaffarnagar, BKU National President Naresh Tikait said that the new sugarcane price is not acceptable for farmers.

Tikait demanded that the rate of 450 per quintal be fixed for the sugarcane.

Uttar Pradesh imposes Rs 1 lakh fine and jail time for lift accidents

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

The Uttar Pradesh government, under Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, has introduced stringent penalties, including a ₹1 lakh fine and three-year jail time, for incidents involving lift malfunctions and accidents.

The Uttar Pradesh government, led by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, has announced a penalty of ₹1 lakh and a three-year jail term for incidents involving lift closures, breakdowns and other accidents. This decision is an attempt to address increasing incidents of lift accidents in the state.

Lift accidents have become increasingly frequent in high-rise apartments in Noida and Ghaziabad, bringing the issue to the forefront. Pointing out the frequency of such incidents, journalist Ayaskant Das explained on X (formerly Twitter) that the reason behind it was the lack of legislation in UP to regulate and control the operations of lifts or elevators.

Four workers killed in Noida service lift collapse

One of the most recent and alarming incidents occurred at an under-construction site of Amrapali Builders in Greater Noida. On September 15, a service lift malfunctioned and collapsed, resulting in the deaths of four people and leaving five others in critical condition. The incident took place at the construction site of the Amrapali Dream Valley Society (Phase-2) in Techzone-4, Greater Noida.

The project, which aims to deliver approximately 9,000 flats, is managed by the National Buildings Construction Corporation (NBCC) India, which had contracted a construction firm to carry out the work.

In response to this event, the police began investigating and arrested nine individuals, including officials of NBCC, the construction company, and the lift company in connection with the incident.

The NBCC announced compensation of ₹20 lakh for the families of each deceased worker and pledged to cover the full medical expenses of the injured individuals. R Venkataramani, the Supreme Court-appointed court receiver of Amrapali projects, also offered ₹25 lakhs for the families of the deceased workers.

This harrowing incident has sparked a renewed sense of urgency for the enactment of lift safety laws in Uttar Pradesh. In the absence of such regulations, high-rise building residents and workers continue to be at risk.

Per a Hindustan Times report, Lokesh M, CEO of the Noida Authority, recently wrote to state authorities, calling for the swift implementation of a lift law, similar to those in other states, to safeguard lift users in tall structures. While the draft law was prepared five years ago, it has been pending government approval since October 2021, despite ongoing discussions and amendments. The law aims to regulate lift installation, operation, maintenance, and accountability in the event of accidents.

Summary

A snippet from the interview showed Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath saying: “I think there should be an acceptance from the Muslim side that there has been a historic mistake for which we want a solution.”

Amid the ongoing controversy over the Gyanvapi mosque-Kashi Vishwanath temple complex, Uttar Pradesh Yogi Adityanath said the Muslim side must accept the “historic mistake”.

The chief minister said it is controversial to call it Gyanvapi a mosque. “What is a trident (trishul) doing inside a masjid, we didn’t keep it. There are jyotirling (shivling) and idols. I think there should be an acceptance from the Muslim side that there has been a historic mistake for which we want a solution,” Adityanath said in an ANI podcast, which is yet to be aired at 5 pm on Monday.

Snippets from the interview shared by the news agency on Twitter show the Uttar Pradesh chief minister speaking on a host of issues and controversies around the singing of Vande Mataram in the country and the West Bengal Panchayat poll violence.

Last week, the Allahabad High Court had reserved till August 3 its verdict on a plea against a Varanasi district court order directing the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) to conduct a survey to determine if the Gyanvapi mosque was built upon a temple.

While hearing the plea filed by Anjuman Intezamia Masjid, which manages the mosque, the court of Chief Justice Pritinker Diwaker also ordered that the stay on the ASI survey till August 3.

The mosque committee had moved the high court on July 25, a day after the Supreme Court halted the ASI survey on July 24, allowing time for the committee to appeal against the lower court’s order.
