Xiaomi moves ahead with Tesla-like SUV as first EV hits goals

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

Discussions about an SUV began as far back as when Lei announced in 2021 that EVs represented his final major entrepreneurial effort, one of the people said.

Xiaomi Corp. aims to begin making and selling a sport utility vehicle similar to Tesla Inc.’s Model Y as early as 2025, embarking on a major new expansion with production of its debut SU7 electric car set to reach about a 100,000 units this year.

Xiaomi is approaching full initial capacity and is working now to increase output to accommodate demand, people familiar with the matter said. The company benchmarked its envisioned SUV against Tesla’s during development, the people said, asking not to be identified discussing a private project.

An SUV would mark a big expansion of Xiaomi’s $10 billion EV endeavour, spearheaded personally by billionaire co-founder Lei Jun. The company is trying to reduce its reliance on a volatile smartphone market dominated globally by Apple Inc., though with EVs it’s getting into a crowded arena and taking on established rivals Tesla and BYD Co.

It’s unclear what specifications and pricing Xiaomi envisions for the SUV — a type of vehicle gaining in popularity across China. The company’s plans for production, first reported by local media outlet Yicai, could also shift depending on how it progresses on capacity, the people added. Representatives for Xiaomi didn’t respond to emails and a phone call seeking comment.

Discussions about an SUV began as far back as when Lei announced in 2021 that EVs represented his final major entrepreneurial effort, one of the people said. But the company eventually decided to move first on the SU7, a $30,000-plus sedan with a design aesthetic similar to Tesla’s Model 3 and the Porsche Taycan.

Xiaomi doesn’t anticipate the SUV going into mass production until late 2025 at the earliest, when it completes construction on a second phase of its assembly factory in Beijing, said one of the people. For now, it’s prioritizing production of the SU7 as it only has the capacity to make fewer than 10,000 deliveries a month, the person said.

Xiaomi, which gets more than 60% of its revenue from smartphones, has been trying to diversify in part because of sluggish device demand in its home market.

Yet it joins scores of players vying for a slice of the Chinese EV market — the world’s largest, but one where margins have compressed as Tesla and BYD lead a price war during a period of slowing growth. Apple nixed its own long-incubating EV project after failing to overcome challenges in adapting its technological expertise to a new field of manufacturing.

Xiaomi’s SU7 series received close to 90,000 confirmed orders as of the end of April — about a month after the debut in late March. Xiaomi’s stock has risen some 30% since the SU7’s debut and is now close to its highest level in about two and a half years.

Its EV business could break even in 2026 — two years ahead of a previous estimate — because of improving capacity and a positive market reception for premium models, HSBC Qianhai Securities’ analysts Frank He and Steven Wang wrote in a memo last week.

They expect the company to more than double shipments to 240,000 units in 2025. “The capacity bottleneck will start to ease in the third quarter of 2024,” they wrote.

Redmi Note 13 Pro+ World Champions Edition: Xiaomi’s tribute to football glory

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

The Redmi Note 13 Pro+ World Champions Edition is a powerful smartphone with a football theme celebrating Argentina’s 2022 World Cup win. It features unique design elements and colours, a 200MP camera, and guaranteed performance in a familiar package.

Xiaomi’s latest release, the Redmi Note 13 Pro+ World Champions Edition, is not just a smartphone, it’s a celebration of the Argentina national football team’s 2022 World Cup victory. As a football fan and a tech enthusiast, I was excited to unbox this special edition device — priced at ₹34,999 for the single 16 GB RAM and 512 GB storage variant — and see how Xiaomi merged sports and technology. It’s a clever move on Xiaomi’s part to ship the phone with the number ’10’ — Lionel Messi’s jersey number — emblazoned across the back of the phone, coinciding with the brand’s 10th anniversary.

The Unboxing experience: A collector’s dream

The phone arrives in a customised box adorned with images of Argentina’s star players. Inside, a large card showcasing the World Cup-winning team and a football field-themed design enhance the collector’s feel. The phone itself, with its blue and white stripes echoing the Argentina jersey and three stars symbolising the team’s World Cup triumphs, is a visual delight.

Design and display: Sleek and immersive

The Redmi Note 13 Pro+ World Champions Edition maintains the sleek aesthetics of the standard model, with a 6.67-inch curved AMOLED display offering a 120Hz refresh rate and 1.5K resolution. The display is bright, vibrant, and perfect for watching videos or playing games.

Performance and software: A familiar powerhouse

Under the hood, the World Champions Edition is identical to the standard Redmi Note 13 Pro+. It’s powered by the MediaTek Dimensity 7200 Ultra chip, providing ample power for everyday tasks and demanding applications. The customised UI features football-themed wallpapers, icons, and lock screens, adding a unique touch to the user experience.

Camera capabilities: 200MP excellence

The 200MP Samsung ISOCELL HP3 sensor remains the star of the show, delivering exceptional detail and clarity in photos. While a few software tweaks would be appreciated, the camera system overall is impressive, offering versatility and impressive low-light performance.

Battery and charging: A day’s power in minutes

The 5000mAh battery, combined with 120W fast charging, ensures you’ll have enough power to last a full day. Even if you’re running low, a quick charge will get you back up and running in no time.

Final thoughts: A worthy tribute

The Redmi Note 13 Pro+ World Champions Edition is more than just a smartphone; it’s a symbol of passion and triumph. Xiaomi has done an excellent job of capturing the spirit of the World Cup victory and translating it into a device that fans will cherish.

While it may not offer significant upgrades over the standard model, the unique design, customised UI, and collectable packaging make it a worthy addition to any football fan’s collection. If you’re looking for a powerful smartphone that celebrates your love for the beautiful game, the Redmi Note 13 Pro+ World Champions Edition is a compelling choice.

Chinese keyboard app on Xiaomi, Oppo, and Vivo phones has security flaw, reveals what users type

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

The most popular typing in Chinese is the pinyin method, based on the pinyin romanisation of Chinese characters, used by nearly 76% of the users.

A Chinese keyboard app that comes pre-installed on millions of Android smartphones has a critical security flaw, new research has revealed. The app’s vulnerability could potentially expose users’ sensitive information, including what they type, the Citizen Lab, an academic research group in Toronto, Canada, has revealed.

The group investigated the security of cloud-based pinyin keyboard apps already installed in the device and found that eight of nine vendors transmitted user keystrokes for vulnerabilities, potentially exposing the keystrokes of more than a billion users to eavesdroppers.

The most popular typing in Chinese is the pinyin method, based on the pinyin romanisation of Chinese characters, used by nearly 76% of the users.

“We reported these vulnerabilities to all nine vendors. Most vendors responded, took the issue seriously, and fixed the reported vulnerabilities, although some keyboard apps remain vulnerable,” they said.

“Sogou, Baidu, and iFlytek IMEs alone comprise over 95% of the market share for third-party IMEs in China, which are used by around a billion people. In addition to the users of third-party keyboard apps, we found that the default keyboards on devices from three manufacturers (Honor, OPPO, and Xiaomi) were also vulnerable to attacks.

“Devices from Samsung and Vivo also bundled a vulnerable keyboard, but it was not used by default. In 2023, Honor, OPPO, and Xiaomi alone comprised nearly 50% of the smartphone market in China,” the report said.

The study concludes with a summary of recommendations to users:

The users of QQ pinyin or the pre-installed keyboard should switch keyboards immediately.

The users of any Sogou, Baidu, or iFlytek keyboard should ensure their keyboards and operating systems are up-to-date.

The users of any Baidu IME keyboard should switch to a different keyboard or disable the ‘cloud-based’ feature in their devices.

Users with privacy concerns should not enable ‘cloud-based’ features on their keyboards or IMEs or should switch to a keyboard that does not offer ‘cloud-based’ prediction.

The iOS users should not enable ‘Full Access’ for their keyboards or IMEs who are having privacy concerns.

The users are advised to keep their devices and apps updated to protect themselves against potential threats, be mindful of the permissions granted to apps, and use reputable security software. Additionally, users should consider using alternative keyboard apps from trusted sources to mitigate the risk and protect their privacy and security.

Xiaomi HyperOS update: Here is all you need to know

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

Now rolling out for the Redmi Note 13 5G series, the HyperOS update offers new lock screen options, app icons, and multi-window support among other features.

Xiaomi has started rolling out its Android 14-based HyperOS operating system designed to enhance the user experience and performance by offering a wide range of optimisations and features.

In a post on social media site X, the Chinese smartphone brand noted that the HyperOS update is now available on its Redmi Note 13 5G series, comprising the Redmi Note 13, Redmi Note 13 Pro, and Redmi Note 13 Pro+ models.

“With Xiaomi HyperOS, say hello to enhanced performance and unparalleled user experience | Now available on the Redmi Note 13 5G Series,” read the post on the official X handle of Redmi India.

Xiaomi introduced the latest user interface in the country in February. Besides the smartphones, the new interface will run on its smart home devices and electric vehicles, reports said.

Earlier, it was stated that the older devices will also get the update.

The Redmi Note 13 series in India was launched earlier this year. The Redmi Note 13 Pro+ 5G was made available with a starting price of ₹29,999, the Redmi Note 13 Pro 5G at ₹23,999 for the base model, and the Redmi Note 13 5G at a starting price of ₹16,999.

HyperOS update: What’s new?

As per the company, the latest update offers smoother gameplay with optimised power consumption. The Android 14-based HyperOS optimises task scheduling as it distributes the workload to various computing units within the chipset.

Further, it gives users a variety of lock screen themes and customisation options to personalise the device. These include new clock styles and lock screen widgets, according to reports.

The Xiaomi HyperOS has a new notification interface, allowing users to manage notifications as per their requirements.

With this update, the Redmi Note 13 series users will be able to open multiple apps in a split-screen layout. For this, they will have to long press on the windows from the recent history section.

Summary

Xiaomi began allowing consumers to place orders for its SU7 electric vehicle sedan on Thursday, after it announced the prices of the car which started at $29,870. On Friday night, it said pre-orders hit 88,898 in the first 24 hours.

Xiaomi is advising would-be buyers of its new SU7 electric sedan that they could face an up to seven-month wait, its app showed on Monday, in a sign that the Chinese electronics maker is enjoying strong demand for its vehicle.

Xiaomi began allowing consumers to place orders for its SU7 electric vehicle sedan on Thursday, after it announced the prices of the car which started at $29,870. On Friday night, it said pre-orders hit 88,898 in the first 24 hours.

Checks by Reuters on Xiaomi’s car app on Monday found that the firm is advising that delivery time for the company’s standard SU7 model could take 18-21 weeks, the SU7 Pro model 18-21 weeks, while the most expensive model, priced at 299,900 yuan, will take 27-30 weeks.

As part of the campaign to kick off sales, Xiaomi also released two other special versions of the car called “Founder’s Edition” that come with complimentary gifts, such as refrigerators. The first batch of 5,000 such cars were sold out immediately after it allowed consumers to place orders on Thursday.

On Sunday, co-founder and CEO Lei Jun, in a Weibo post said that it would open a second round of sales for the Founder’s Edition, though he didn’t specify the quantum.

He also said that during the ordering process for the Founder’s Edition, Xiaomi identified and blocked some abnormal orders and those placed by scalpers.

Xiaomi built a Beijing factory capable of producing 200,000 cars annually before it had regulatory approval to start manufacturing in China. State-owned automaker BAIC Group disclosed in November it would make the cars for Xiaomi – at the same Xiaomi plant.

Xiaomi’s first EV models launched at competitive pricing, aims to be China’s Tesla

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

At a presentation in Beijing, Xiaomi’s co-founder Lei Jun revealed the company’s ambitious strategy, showcasing the SU7 range of electric vehicles with a starting price of 215,900 yuan (approximately ₹25 lakh).

Marking its debut into the competitive electric vehicle (EV) market, Xiaomi, on Thursday, announced the launch of its EV models, unveiling aggressive pricing strategies aimed at capturing market share in China’s automotive landscape.

At a presentation in Beijing, Xiaomi’s co-founder Lei Jun revealed the company’s ambitious strategy, showcasing the SU7 range of electric vehicles with a starting price of 215,900 yuan (approximately ₹25 lakh).

Model name
Starting price (yuan)
Xiaomi SU7
215,900 (approx ₹25 lakh)
Xiaomi SU7 Pro
254,900 (approx ₹29 lakh)
Xiaomi SU7 Max
299,000 (approx ₹34 lakh)

With a multiyear undertaking and a substantial $10 billion budget, Xiaomi is positioning itself to challenge established players like Tesla and BYD in the burgeoning EV sector.

The announcement triggered a surge in Xiaomi’s shares, reflecting investor optimism about the company’s foray into EVs and its potential to revitalise Xiaomi’s business amidst a stagnant smartphone market.

I didn’t expect Apple to quit,” Lei said on stage in Beijing, before an audience of tens of millions across Chinese streaming platforms. After diving into the details of his cars’ design and engineering — from nine different colour options to a laptop-friendly glove box and triple-layer UV protection in the windshield — the CEO returned to the topic of his smartphone-making rival. “Xiaomi will support Apple users just as well,” he said.

Xiaomi’s turquoise-blue EV models have already garnered attention in stores across China, generating excitement among consumers eager to experience the company’s latest offering. By partnering with Beijing Automotive Group Co. and strategically expanding its retail footprint, Xiaomi aims to establish a strong presence in key Chinese cities and capitalize on growing demand for electric vehicles.

To avoid delays in obtaining regulatory approval, Xiaomi partnered with state-owned Beijing Automotive Group Co. for the new vehicles. The cars are going on sale in 59 stores across 29 Chinese cities.

Initiated three years ago, Lei has called the EV endeavour his final entrepreneurial bet and has dedicated most of his attention to it in recent times. Xiaomi aspires to become a top global carmaker in 15 to 20 years, Lei said when he first unveiled the SU7 in December. President Lu Weibing has added that the company’s goal is to have one of China’s three best-selling luxury EV models.

The ambitious EV bet arrives at a time of slowing growth for China’s electric car purchases. Industry bodies project 25% growth in sales for 2024, down from 36% last year and 96% in 2022.

Xiaomi CEO teases price on upcoming car, showrooms begin displaying vehicle

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

The company will on Thursday evening announce its official price range and start taking orders for the car, dubbed the SU7, with the SU short for Speed Ultra. CEO Lei Jun’s comments, made on his official Weibo account, mark the first time the company has confirmed the upper end of its price range.

Xiaomi’s CEO said on Monday his goal for the firm’s first electric vehicle was that it would be the “best looking, easiest to drive and smartest car” priced below 500,000 yuan ($69,424), as the Chinese electronics maker gears up for orders this week.

The company will on Thursday evening announce its official price range and start taking orders for the car, dubbed the SU7, with the SU short for Speed Ultra. CEO Lei Jun’s comments, made on his official Weibo account, mark the first time the company has confirmed the upper end of its price range.

Anticipation for the car has been building up since Xiaomi unveiled the vehicle in December and announced it aimed to become one of the world’s top five automakers. Lei has touted it as having technology capable of delivering acceleration better than Tesla cars and Porsche’s EVs.

Xiaomi stores in China also began displaying the car on Monday, with prospective customers and car bloggers lining up to get a close view of the “ocean blue” version. In addition, the company uploaded its “Xiaomi Car” app to Chinese app stores.

The SU7 will come in two versions – one with a driving range of up to 668km (415 miles) on a single charge and another with a range of up to 800km. By comparison, Tesla’s Model S has a range of up to 650km.

China’s fifth-largest smartphone maker has been seeking to diversify into EVs amid stagnating demand for smartphones – a plan it first flagged in 2021. Other Chinese tech companies that have partnered with automakers to develop EVs include telecoms giant Huawei HWT.UL and search engine firm Baidu.

Xiaomi has pledged to invest $10 billion in autos over a decade and is one of the few new players in China’s EV market to gain approval from authorities, who have been reluctant to add to the supply glut.

Its cars are being produced by a unit of state-owned automaker BAIC Group in a Beijing factory with an annual capacity of 200,000 vehicles.
