Summary

Titled “Ice Bed,” the image captured by British amateur photographer Nima Sarikhani features a male polar bear who has just laid down to sleep on an iceberg.

The mesmerising image of a slumbering polar bear on a small iceberg has been announced as the winner of the Wildlife Photographer of the Year People’s Choice Award.

The photograph was captured by British amateur photographer Nima Sarikhani at the Svalbard archipelago in Norway. Titled ‘Ice Bed,’ the image features a male polar bear who has just laid down to sleep on an iceberg.

Sarikhani said he was honoured to have won the award this year. “This photograph has stirred strong emotions in many of those who have seen it… Whilst climate change is the biggest challenge we face, I hope that this photograph also inspires hope. There is still time to fix the mess we have caused,” he said in a statement.

The Wildlife Photographer of the Year competition, hosted by the Natural History Museum in London, witnessed an overwhelming response this year, with over 75,000 people participating in the voting process.

There were around 50,000 entries from 95 countries, while Sarikhani’s ‘Ice Bed’ was selected from a shortlist of 25 images.

Dr Douglas Gurr, Director of the Natural History Museum said “Sarikhani’s breath-taking and poignant image allows us to see the beauty and fragility of our planet.”

“His thought-provoking image is a stark reminder of the integral bond between an animal and its habitat and serves as a visual representation of the detrimental impacts of climate warming and habitat loss,” Gurr added.

As per the Natural History Museum, Sarikhani spent three days searching for polar bears aboard an expedition vessel, but he was thwarted by thick fog around the Norwegian islands. Luckily, he came across an area of sea ice, where he encountered a pair of bears one younger and one older.

Sarikhani tracked the two bears for almost eight hours until the younger male decided to rest.

The other four images include ‘The Happy Turtle’ by Tzahi Finkelstein, ‘Starling Murmuration’ by Daniel Dencescu, ‘Shared Parenting’ by Mark Boyd, and ‘Aurora Jellies’ by Audun Rikardsen.

World Migratory Bird Day 2023: Interesting facts about migratory birds

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

World Migratory Bird Day focuses on the conservation of migratory birds. This year, the day will be working on the topic of water and its importance for migratory birds, as a huge number of migratory birds rely on aquatic ecosystems during their life cycles.

The World Migratory Bird Day 2023 is a global day which is observed twice a year. The day is observed on the second Saturday of May and October in different countries. The World Migratory Bird Day is observed in the United States and Canada in May while in other countries it is observed in October.

The fall celebration of the World Migratory Bird Day 2023 will be held on October 14.

The idea of celebrating a day dedicated to migratory birds was introduced in the United States in 1993 when the US Fish and Wildlife Service, Smithsonian Migratory Bird Center and the Cornell Laboratory of Ornithology began to observe a day that encourages bird festivals and conducts educational programmes across the nation. Later in 2016, the first World Migratory Bird Day was celebrated after getting launched by the African-Eurasian Migratory Waterbird Agreement (AEWA) and the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS) in April.

World Migratory Bird Day focuses on the conservation of migratory birds. These are the birds that fly from different parts of the world to escape the winter season. This year, the day will be working on the topic of water and its importance for migratory birds, as a huge number of migratory birds rely on aquatic ecosystems during their life cycles.

Here are some interesting facts about the migratory birds:

• As 4,000 species of birds are regular migrants which is about 40 percent of the total number of bird species in the world.

• Interestingly, many migratory birds during their whole life span cover a distance comparable to the distance from the Earth to the Moon.

• Ornithologists have proven that migratory birds orient themselves by the direction of the sun and stars, just like the ancient navigators used to do.

• Most of migratory birds fly in a V-shaped flock, as flying in this shape reduces the air resistance and makes the flight easier for them.

• Reports suggest that most of the migratory birds diligently eat off and gain weight before starting their journey. The fat that has been reserved is then used up during the flight, as birds will rarely be distracted by food.

• Bar-headed geese are the highest-flying migratory birds which can reach an altitude of up to five and a half miles above sea level.

• Snipes can fly around 4,200 miles at a speed of up to 60 mph, which is the fastest of all migratory birds. On the other hand, the Bar-tailed Godwit can fly for nearly 7,000 miles without stopping, making it the longest recorded non-stop flight by any migratory bird.

• Besides the flyers, the large Australian birds, Emus often travel for miles on foot to find food while a huge number of penguins migrate by swimming.

Cheetah Sasha dies in MP’s Kuno park; big cat had kidney ailment before translocation

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

Sasha died because of a kidney ailment which she was suffering from even before her translocation from Namibia, Principal Chief Conservator of Forest (PCCF-Wildlife) JS Chauhan told PTI.

Namibian cheetah Sasha died due to a kidney ailment on Monday, more than 6 months after she was translocated along with seven other big cats to Madhya Pradesh’s Kuno National Park (KNP) from the African country, a top forest department official said.

The death of the more than four-and-a-half years old female feline is being seen as a setback to Project Cheetah, aimed at reviving the population of the world’s fastest land animal in India, seven decades after they became extinct. Eight cheetahs were brought from Namibia in mid-September last year and housed in the KNP in Sheopur district.

Sasha died because of a kidney ailment which she was suffering from even before her translocation from Namibia, Principal Chief Conservator of Forest (PCCF-Wildlife) JS Chauhan told PTI.

“A monitoring team found Sasha lazy on March 22, following which they decided to take her to a quarantine enclosure for treatment,” he said.

The wild animal’s blood sample was collected the same day and examined. A wildlife expert armed with a portable ultrasound machine went inside the KNP to examine the ailing cheetah and it was found that Sasha’s kidneys were infected, said Chauhan.

Later, senior Wildlife Institute of India (WII) scientists and KNP management contacted the Cheetah Conservation Fund, Namibia, to know the treatment history of Sasha. They found that in her last blood sample, collected on August 15, 2022, (a month before being translocated to KNP), the animal’s creatinine level was 400 (an indicator of poor kidney function), he said.

The high creatinine level clearly established that the feline was suffering from a kidney ailment even before she was translocated to the KNP, Chauhan said in a statement.

Namibian wildlife experts and KNP veterinary doctors worked hard day and night to cure Sasha, but the animal did not survive, the forest official said.

The seven other cheetahs are doing well. Among these seven, three male and a female were released in the park’s open forest area and they are ”totally healthy, active and hunting in a normal manner”, the statement said.

Twelve cheetahs brought to the KNP from South Africa last month are at present housed in a quarantine enclosure and they are healthy and active, it added.

The eight Namibian cheetahs – five female and three male – were released into their enclosures at the KNP on September 17 at an event attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The last cheetah died in India in Koriya district of present-day Chhattisgarh in 1947 and the fastest land animal was declared extinct in the country in 1952.

10 captive-bred vultures to be released this year, major milestone for decades-long conservation efforts in India

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

Wildlife biologists raised and nurtured them in conservation centres. The end goal was to prepare them for their eventual journey back into the wild.

The Vulture Conservation Breeding Centre in Haryana’s Pinjore is one of the oldest of its kind in India. This year, it has on its hands a daunting task. The Centre is set to release 10 captive-bred Oriental white-backed vultures into the wild in 2023, reported News18.

Vultures have a slow breeding cycle. They have long incubation periods, laying only one egg per year.

The process of bringing these critically endangered birds back from the brink of extinction involved decades of hard work. Wildlife biologists raised and nurtured them in conservation centres. The end goal was to prepare them for their eventual journey back into the wild.

Following sustained efforts, the Pinjore centre has seen many new fledglings over the years. Nearly 345 vultures have been artificially hatched by scientists since the breeding programme began in 2008.

Another important aspect of the efforts has been the fight against diclofenac. This veterinary drug, used to treat domestic livestock, is toxic to vultures. The birds died from kidney failure within days of exposure to diclofenac-contaminated tissues. The medication has been banned for veterinary use in India since 2006.

The 10 birds to be released in winter will be closely monitored for at least a year. Researchers will use GPS tracking devices and satellite transmitters for this. They will look for behavioural changes to ensure they get accustomed to the wilderness again, and that there is no mortality due to diclofenac poisoning.

Dr Vibhu Prakash, who has been spearheading vulture conservation in India for over two decades, says that the goal is to eventually release as many as 100 pairs of each of the three critically endangered species of vultures. As efficient scavengers, vultures play a vital role in the ecosystem by keeping the environment clean and disease-free.

Dr Prakash and his team have led the conservation of 399 vultures, which are now housed at Bir Shikargaha Wildlife Sanctuary in the Shivalik Hills in Pinjore. At least 138 are Oriental white-backed vultures, 209 long-billed, and 52 slender-billed vultures. This is the largest collection of the three critically endangered gyps species of vultures in a single place in the world.

Scientists are also working to develop Vulture Safe Zones – areas where vulture populations would be closely monitored, and activities would be undertaken to ensure that domestic livestock carcasses that vultures feed on are not contaminated with drugs like diclofenac.
