Shares of Indian paint companies climbed up on Monday after the GST council on Saturday lowered indirect tax slab on paints to 18 percent from the existing 28 percent.

Asian Paints gained by 5 percent at Rs 1,464.4, followed by Akzo Nobel up by 2.3 percent, while Nerolac and Berger Paints gained 1 percent and 0.3 percent respectively.

Kotak’s Rohit Chordia said that rate cut could boost the paint companies’ earnings. The brokerage has raised earnings per share of Asian Paints by 7 to 13 percent for financial year 2019 to 2021.

The GST council slashed tax rates on a number of products, ranging from paints, white goods to footwears.

HM Bharuka, vice chairman and managing director of Kansai Nerolac said that it was the company’s duty to pass the GST cut benefit to its customers.

“Overall EBITDA level of paint companies is very good and I don’t think we should become greedy and we should pass it on entirely to customers,” he said.

Indian benchmark indexes rebounded in the last hour of trading lifted by sustained buying in bank, FMCG, metal and financial shares. The Sensex ended at 36,719, rising by 222 points, or 0.61 percent, while the Nifty settled at 11084, gaining by 74.55 points, or 0.68 percent. Almost all sectoral indices gained except IT and to some extent auto.

(Market update as of 3.40 pm)

Indian markets rebounded in the last hour of trade, lifted by sustained buying in bank and metal shares, well-supported by FMCG stocks, particularly ITC and Hinudstan Unilever. The Sensex jumped over 226 points, or 0.62 percent, to 36,722.84, while the Nifty surged to 5-month high at 11,084.20, adding 74 points, or 0.67 percent. The Sensex later crossed to a new record high, while the Nifty also trades at highest level since budget day of February 1 this year.

(Market update as of 3.15 pm)

Indian markets trade range-bound in the afternoon trade on Monday. The Sensex added 121 points, or 0.33 percent, to rise to 36,618.27, while the Nifty was higher by 41 points, or 0.37 percent, to 11,050.

(Market update as of 2 pm)

Here’s how the markets fared around noon

The Indian market turned range-bound with a positive bias as sustained buying was seen in FMCG, telecom and NBFCs.

A bigger rally, however, has not been seen due to index heavyweight like HDFC Bank underperforming along with auto and IT shares.

The Sensex was trading at 36,580.90, gaining 85 points, while the Nifty was below 11,050 level, up by 33 points. The Sensex opened at 36,501 and has touched an intra-day high of 36,630 so far.

The indexes have largely been lifted by ITC, and well-supported by Hindustan Unilever, Asian Paints, Bharti Airtel, and Bajaj group finance stocks. However, the indexes were dragged due to midcap trading below potential.

HDFC Bank was trading in the red after Q1 results were below expectations on a certain parameters.

The stocks of the day mostly included those benefited from the GST council slashing rate on a list of 52 items ranging from paints to footwear to sanitary napkins. Shares of Havells, Bata, Liberty Shoes rallied higher.

Another gainer was UPL as the agro-chemical company announced a $4.3 billion deal with Arysta Lifesciences.

Among sectoral indices, FMGC, financial stocks were trading higher, while auto, metal, IT were trading lower.

Asian markets were trading mixed after the Bank of Japan offered to buy bonds at the first fixed-rate operation since February.

Japan’s Nikkei was down 1.27 percent, Hong Kong’s Hang Seng shed 0.09 percent in early trade today, while Shanghai Composite edged 0.37 per cent higher.

Sensex, Nifty turn negative, under-performing midcaps, sectoral indices pull indexes lower

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

The 30-share S&P BSE index jumped by 227.91 points, or 0.62 per cent, to hit new high of 36,747.87, surpassing its previous record of 36,740.07 recorded on July 13.

Indian markets turned bearish in the early afternoon trade on Wednesday, retreating sharply from the day’s high, dragged lower by under-performing midcaps,  sectoral indices and political developments.

The benchmark indexes were also under pressure after sustained selling in auto, metal, and telecom stocks. That the Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan has accepted the Telugu Desam Party’s (TDP) no-confidence motion against the Narendra Modi government hasn’t helped investor sentiment.

At 1 pm, the Sensex traded at 36,478.91, lower by 41.05, or 0.11 percent. So far, the Sensex has ranged between 36,747.87 and 36,320.92, after opening at 36,722. The NSE Nifty regained the 11,000 level at 1 pm, with the 50-share broader index trading at 11,006.35, lower by 1.70 points, or down by 0.02.

Among sectoral indices, BSE Metal, Realty, Telecom, have seen maximum decline. Nifty PSU Bank is lower by half a percent.

Earlier, the Sensex catapulted over 200 points to register a new high of 36,747.87 in early trade, buoyed by gains in oil and gas, bank, realty and entertainment shares.

The 30-share S&P BSE index jumped by 227.91 points, or 0.62 percent, to hit a new high of 36,747.87, surpassing its previous record of 36,740.07 recorded on July 13.

At 11.35 am, the Sensex traded at 36,643.65, or 123 points higher, or by 0.34 percent. The BSE index had gained 196.19 points in the previous close. The Nifty trades hovers around 11,050 level, at 11,057.25, or up by 49.20 points, or 0.45 percent.

Major gainers include Adani Ports, HDFC twins, Sun Pharma, ONGC, Coal India, Asian Paint, Wipro, Bajaj Auto, Hero MotoCorp, Maruti Suzuki, Infosys, PowerGrid, L&T, RIL and TCS, rising up to 1.65 percent.

BSE Sectoral indices led by oil & gas, capital goods, energy have gained up to 1.52 percent. Telecom and metal are the biggest losers with 2.20 percent and 1.81 percent respectively.

Nifty Metal and PSU Bank are down by 1.75 percent and 1.23 percent respectively.
