How did the stock market open?
The market opened weak due to global cues as the political turmoil in Italy persists. The BSE Sensex opened at 34,747 points while the NSE Nifty opened at 10,569 points. Tata Motors, Hero MotorCorp, Vedanta, ICICI Bank and Axis Bank are the current top index losers.
What was expected?
The market is likely to trade in the red for the second day due to weak global cues and weak rupee.
The SGX Nifty is trading at levels around 10,540 as against the Nifty May Future’s Tuesday close of 10,615, indicating a weak opening for the Indian market.
The Asian shares extended a global sell-off in early trading Wednesday as Italy’s political crisis provoked a heavy retreat on Wall Street, sent the euro to a 10-month low and pushed up borrowing costs for the government in Rome.
On Wall Street on Tuesday, the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 1.58 percent to 24,361.45, the S&P 500 lost 1.16 percent to 2,689.86 and the Nasdaq Composite dropped 0.5 percent to 7,396.59.
Investors fear that repeat elections in the euro zone’s third-largest economy – which could come as soon as July – may become a de-facto referendum on Italian membership of the currency bloc and the country’s role in the European Union.
The rupee once again turned shaky and lost ground against the US currency on Tuesday, falling by a steep 43 paise to end at 67.86 due to heavy month-end dollar demand from importers.
Forex market sentiment turned bearish after tracking losses in most Asian and emerging market currencies, also impacted by political developments in Italy.
On the earnings front, ONGC, SAIL, Berger Paints, Alkem Laboratories, Apollo Hospitals, Infibeam, Info Edge, Reliance Communications, Punj Lloyd, Bharat Dynamics, Suzlon, KNR constructions, Canara Bank, among others will declare their quarterly results.
The market on Tuesday closed in the red amid volatility as the expiry nears. The BSE Sensex slipped 216 points to close at 34,949 and the NSE Nifty closed 55 points lower at 10,633.
