Shreyas Iyer opted out of the Ranji Trophy finals on Day 4 as he is reportedly suffering from back spasms all over again. According to the reports, Iyer underwent scans and is likely to miss IPL if the issue remains.

Post BCCI’s announcement regarding central contracts, there was unsaid pressure on Iyer to participate in domestic cricket. The Mumbai batter had complained about back spasms during the second Test between India and England in Vizag and then he was cut off from the squad with no definite reasoning.

On Thursday, Mumbai won the Ranji trophy for the 42nd time, beating a resolute Vidarbha by 169 runs on the fifth and final day of a thoroughly engrossing summit clash.

The fate of the final Mumbai’s 48th in the 90 years of the tournament’s history at the iconic Wankhede Stadium was sealed when the hosts set a 538-run target for the visiting team. Vidarbha captain Akshay Wadkar (102) and the unheralded Harsh Dubey (65) kept Mumbai at bay for the entire first session on the last day after Vidarbha resumed on 248 for five, needing another 290 runs to win.

The team was eventually bowled out for 368 in a contest that ebbed and flowed with Vidarbha frustrating the hosts for long periods of play on the last two days. Wadkar led the fight for his side with his first century of the year which also helped him cross the 600-run mark this season. Dubey brought up only the second fifty of his first-class career.

BCCI’s central contract announcement initiated a series of debates on whether Shreyas Iyer deserved to be excluded from the grade A contract after giving a remarkable performance in the ODI World Cup 2023.

After Iyer and Ishan Kishan rejected team management’s request to play red-ball cricket, BCCI took strict action against them by not excluding them from the list of 30 players who were given the new contract.

However, Iyer made a comeback in the Ranji Trophy semi-final match between Mumbai and Tamil Nadu on Sunday and managed to score just 3 runs. The Mumbai batter was clean-bowled by Sandeep Warrier.

Earlier, Iyer skipper a Ranji Trophy match for Mumbai claiming he had a back issue. However, as per Indian Express reports, the NCA gave a contradictory fitness report on him.

Former World Cup captain Kapil Dev backed BCCI’s move, calling it a much-needed step to protect marquee first-class events like the Ranji Trophy. “A few players will suffer, but let it be”, he said.

“I congratulate the BCCI for taking the much-needed step to protect the status of domestic cricket. I was sad to see domestic cricket being given the skip by players once they had established themselves in international cricket”, the former captain said.”It was high time the message was given and this strong step by the BCCI will go a long way in restoring the prestige of domestic cricket. I have always believed in the process of international players making themselves available to play for their respective states. It helps them extend their support to domestic players. Also, it is a nice way to pay back for the services rendered by the state association in grooming a player,” he said.

India batting coach Vikram Rathour bets on Shubman Gill, Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shreyas Iyer who have not played much long-form cricket ahead of the second India vs England Test. Both Gill (23, 0) and Iyer (35, 13) struggled against the English spinners in the first Test in Hyderabad, which India lost by 28 runs to trail 0-1 in the five-match series.

But with Kohli, Rahul and Ravindra Jadeja not playing the second Test, beginning in Visakhaptnam on Friday, Pathan doesn’t believe the Indian team management will take the risk of including young Sarfaraz Khan in the playing eleven.

“There’s a difference between playing with intent and playing attacking cricket. I want them to play with intent. If there is the opportunity to score some runs, they should take it,” Rathour said.

“They need to decide by looking at the surface and conditions. So, the batters need to possess that intelligence as to which is the best or safest shot on the surface.”

“Mr Ravindra Jadeja and Mr KL Rahul have been ruled out of the second IDFC First Bank Test against England in Vizag, starting February 02, 2024,” the BCCI said in a media release. “The BCCI Medical Team is monitoring the progress of the duo,” it added.

The selection committee has added Mumbai batter Sarfaraz Khan, left-arm spinner Sourabh Kumar and all-rounder Washington Sundar to the squad for the second Test. It is a maiden national call-up for Sarfaraz after scoring truck load of runs in domestic cricket and more recently in the India A series against England Lions.

“Could they have batted with more discipline? Maybe they could have. That’s what they need to decide and come up with their plans,” he said.

“But, they need to score runs by playing their shots, as you need to back your strengths. Batting is always about scoring runs. It’s not about not getting out but how many runs you put on the board,” he said.

With Virat Kohli already unavailable for the first two Tests due to personal reasons, the injuries to Jadeja and Rahul have made matters worse for India, who find themselves under pressure after losing only their fourth Test at home since 2013. Shreyas Iyer smashes the first ever ICC World Cup century against the Netherlands in the final league game of the Cricket World Cup on Sunday. Iyer joined the World Cup after a long recovery and his performance in the tournament has been applauded by the cricketing world.

India captain Rohit Sharma won the toss and opted to bat first against the Dutch. At the time of writing this report, Iyer had touched the golden three-digit score and KL Rahul (88*) was inching closer to his century. The opening order gave a golden start to team India as skipper Rohit Sharma (61), Shubman Gill (51) and Virat Kohli (51) all three hit half-centuries.

India is atop the points standings with 16 points from eight wins – the only unbeaten side in the tournament. It will be aiming for a clean sweep in the league stage ahead of the semi-finals, where the two-time champions will take on fourth-placed New Zealand in the first semi-final at Mumbai on November 15.

Second-placed South Africa will take on five-time champions Australia, which finished the league stage in third place, in the second semifinal at Kolkata on Nov. 16.

The Netherlands has four points from eight games from its two wins against South Africa and Bangladesh. It is placed tenth in the standings and needs a win against India to move to six points and edge out eighth-placed Bangladesh, which would confirm its qualification for the 2025 Champions Trophy in Pakistan.

The top eight teams in the league stage of this World Cup qualify for the Champions Trophy. India is unchanged from its previous game against South Africa in Kolkata, which it won by a huge 243 runs.

The Netherlands also fielded an unchanged team from its previous game against England in Pune, which it lost by 160 runs. A capacity crowd is expected at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium with the match coinciding with the auspicious festival of Diwali.

More importantly, he is currently on 49 ODI centuries and level with compatriot and Indian legend Sachin Tendulkar, with a Sunday full-house anticipating a record 50th hundred at his adopted home ground. He plays for the Royal Challengers Bangalore in the Indian Premier League.

The Bengaluru pitch should aid batters, and Kohli in his endeavour. A high-scoring game could be in the offing, with chasing under lights preferable at this venue.

India’s fielding coach T Dilip handed over the honours to annouce the best fielding of the match award to Sachin Tendulkar on Thursday as India played in Mumbai’s Wankhede stadium. Tendulkar hailed the team’s winning spirit and congratulated them on their winning streak in the ICC World Cup. The award was this time given to the team’s ‘silent sniper’ Shreyas Iyer for taking catches and securing runs on the field.

India became the first team to qualify for the World Cup semifinals after beating Sri Lanka by a massive 302 runs here on Thursday. Mohammed Shami (5/18) and Mohammed Siraj (3/16) ran through the Sri Lanka batting line-up as the Islanders were bundled out for 55 in 19.4 overs while chasing 358.

Shreyas Iyer brought up his 2000 runs in ODI cricket after an impressive knock against Sri Lanka at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai in the ICC Men’s ODI World Cup 2023. The right-hand batter came into this came amidst massive backlash after a disappointing outing against England in Lucknow.

Prior to this game, Iyer underwent a gruelling 45-minute-long session during optional training on Friday.

The batter dealt with multiple throwdowns to help him get better acclimatised with his drawbacks against shortpitched deliveries. However, Iyer shooed away those concerns as he went about doing his business with absolute ease and some serious flamboyance against the Lankans.

The batter’s proficiency against spin bowling and ability to hit clean sixes in the middle overs makes him a perfect fit at the two-down spot.

However, Iyer was facing a series of back injuries in the lead up to this tournament. He braved his way till the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. However, he finally went under the knife and underwent a surgery, missing the entire Indian Premier League (IPL) season for Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). Iyer came back during the Asia Cup, but he only cemented his spot in the playing XI by scoring a ton whilst batting at No. 3 against Australia at the Holkar Stadium in Indore.

India is flying high – the only unbeaten team in the competition thus far. The hosts sit second on the points’ table with 10 points from five games. It trails South Africa – equal on points after six games – on net run-rate. England, meanwhile, is 10th on the table. The 2019 champions sunk to last spot again on Saturday evening as the Netherlands beat Bangladesh.

It has a mere two points from only one win in five games – the worst run for a defending champion since 1999. Australia in 1992 is the only other defending champion to lose four (or more) matches in a World Cup. England has only beaten Bangladesh and still trails them on run-rate. It has lost to New Zealand, Afghanistan, South Africa and Sri Lanka.

Star all-rounder Hardik Pandya is still unavailable for India and is nursing a left ankle injury. In his absence, the hosts have gone with a similar combination as it did against New Zealand a week ago in Dharamsala – six batsmen and five bowlers.

Both India and England have fielded an unchanged side from the previous game. Sunday is going to be dry and hot in Lucknow, with a slow and turning wicket expected at the BRABVE Stadium. It should assist the batters, but spin should come into play prominently as the match progresses. Evening dew could favour the side chasing, but pacers have also enjoyed bowling under lights at this venue.

Middle-order batter Shreyas Iyer’s exclusion from the playing XI against Pakistan came as an unpleasant surprise since the player just made a comeback in a blue jersey after a long break. His absence caused by to back injury was something that impacted India’s top-order batting lineup.

On Sunday, just before the toss the news broke that KL Rahul has been asked to play at No.4 as Iyer picked a back spasm at the last moment. BCCI’s medical team has advised Iyer to rest further as he is not fully recovered.

“Shreyas Iyer is feeling better but is yet to fully recover from a back spasm. He has been advised rest by the BCCI Medical Team and has not traveled with the team to the stadium today for India’s Super 4 match against Sri Lanka,” a statement from the board read.

India went to the top of the points table in the Super 4 stage of the Asia Cup with a 228-run win over Pakistan. KL Rahul was the last-minute replacement of Iyer in the playing eleven. Iyer had batted against Pakistan in India’s tournament opener in Pallekele on September 2.

Shreyas Iyer’s much-awaited comeback is just a few days away as the Asia Cup begins on 30th August. Iyer was the first choice for India for the No. 4 position in ODIs until he suffered a back injury and had to take a break for over five months.

Talking to BCCI about his surgery, Iyer admitted that the surgery was something inevitable as he suffered from excruciating pain. Iyer told the BCCI, “To be precise, I had this nerve compression, basically a slip disc, which was compressing the nerve, and the pain was going all the way down to the bottom of my tiny toe. And, it was horrendous then.”

His physios and experts were also of the opinion that he needed to go under the knife to have a longer career.

“It reached a saturation point where I realised that ‘okay, now I have to get surgery’. And, the physios and the experts told me that it is important that you go under the knife and get this done with. Straight after the injury, I went back home after being hospitalised for two days. I gave myself rest for almost 10 days,” he added.

Iyer also failed to carry out his captaincy role for Kolkata Knight Riders in IPL 2023. “At that period, one of the doctors had come to check my toe strength. Rishabh Pant shared a video from the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru in which KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer are indulging in a practice session. Although there are bleak chances of them being fit for World Cup squad selection, the latest update on their recovery can still give cricket fans some hope.

Both Rahul and Iyer are trying to make a comeback for the Asia Cup otherwise their chances to make the cut for the World Cup would be next to nil. In the video, Iyer was seen firmly pushing a delivery from a fast bowler in the cover region with Rahul at the non-striker’s end. As it was a simulation, a local umpire was summoned to officiate.

Even if the duo joins the squad in the Asia Cup it would be interesting to see if they can take the responsibility of playing at No.4 and give strength to India’s middle order. Recently at an event, while talking about the No.4 position skipper Rohit Sharma acknowledged that batters have failed to make the No. 4 spot their own in One Day Internationals (ODIs) ever since Yuvraj Singh hung his boots from international cricket.

“Look, No. 4 has been an issue for us for a long time. After Yuvi (Yuvraj Singh), nobody has come and settled themselves in. But, for a long period of time, Shreyas (Iyer) has actually batted at No. 4 and he has done well — his numbers are really good,” Rohit told reporters on the sidelines of a LALIGA event in Mumbai.

It was already reported in PTI that the national selection committee under Ajit Agarkar will only select Rahul and Iyer if they happen to sustain the rigours of 50-over cricket, and for that, they had to undergo match simulation. In the case of Rahul, the selectors would also like to check out if he is fit to keep wickets for 50 overs and Iyer also needs to be on the field for the entire duration in order to prove their respective match fitness. Only batting fitness might not ensure a place in the squad of 15.

The NCA bigwigs are all tight-lipped about the fitness status but the Asia Cup team selection has been deferred because the Ajit Agarkar-led committee wants to give the duo the best chance to get fit before the continental showpiece. The squad is expected to be announced towards the middle or end of this week in Mumbai.

“Keeping 50 overs in Sri Lankan heat would take a toll and NCA can only give him fit certificate if he is able to don the big gloves without any apparent discomfort. Also, they haven’t played anything and the first international game against Pakistan (on September 2) could be a bit too much of a pressure. But then time is of the essence,” a BCCI source tracking the developments said.

It is understood that while Tilak Varma has made an impression, the selection committee would like to exercise caution with regard to throwing the Hyderabad southpaw at the deep end of the pool.

“Yes, he has started well and he will surely play ODIs in the future. But what if he is pushed too quickly and it turns out to be counter-productive? You can’t play with young careers. Yes, he could be discussed but only if both Iyer and Rahul are ruled out,” the source said.
