IPL 2021 | MI vs DC match preview: Predicted playing XI, betting odds and where to watch live

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

With an abundance of left-handers in the Mumbai ranks, local boy R Ashwin could be the key weapon for DC.

In what could be an exciting game a repeat of the IPL 2020 finale, reigning champions Mumbai Indians will take on last season’s finalist Delhi Capitals at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. While both teams sit at the top half of the table with two wins in three matches, it will be important for both sides to win as both sides would want to create momentum that eventually will enable them to secure the title.

For defending champions Mumbai the start has not been much different from usual. The team lost the first match and followed it by two wins. While the victories again revealed Mumbai’s ability to come out on top in the last five overs of the forty over match it has also revealed some chinks in the armour. Its famed batting order still seems to be out of shape, especially Hardik Pandya.

While Surya Kumar Yadav has continued his good run, others particularly Ishan Kishen seems jittery. However, the team has come on top on the last two occasions owing to their bowling, arguably the best in the tournament. With pacers Bumrah and Boult in great form along with spinners Chahal and Krunal, the only real question is who will operate as the third pacer.

Key player: Trent Boult was the one who dismantled the Delhi top order in both the finals and the qualifiers of the last IPL. His ability to bring the ball back into the right-hander is certain to create troubles to opener Prithvi Shah who seems to have a big gap between bat and pad when playing the incoming deliveries.

Predicted playing XI: Rohit Sharma, Quinton de Kock, Ishan Kishan, Suryakumar Yadav, Hardik Pandya, Kieron Pollard, Krunal Pandya, Rahul Chahar, Marco Jansen, Jasprit Bumrah, Trent Boult

Squad: Quinton de Kock(w), Rohit Sharma(c), Suryakumar Yadav, Ishan Kishan, Kieron Pollard, Hardik Pandya, Krunal Pandya, Rahul Chahar, Adam Milne, Jasprit Bumrah, Trent Boult, Piyush Chawla, Dhawal Kulkarni, Saurabh Tiwary, Aditya Tare, Chris Lynn, Nathan Coulter-Nile, Jayant Yadav, James Neesham, Anmolpreet Singh, Anukul Roy, Mohsin Khan, Arjun Tendulkar, Marco Jansen, Yudhvir Singh

For the Delhi side, the match is not just about continuing its winning streak but also lay rest to their Mumbai nightmare. While 16 defeats in 28 encounters do not sound that big Delhi will be painfully aware of the sheer domination that Mumbai has had over them, the last of which came in the finals of IPL 2020. While the batting order seems to be working fine, led by opener Shikhar Dhawan the habit of the bowlers to concede runs may harm the side given the quality of the Mumbai side. It will not be surprising if the Delhi side brings in wrist spinner Amit Mishra in place of a pacer given the slow nature of the pitch.

Key player: With an abundance of left-handers in the Mumbai ranks, local boy R Ashwin could be the key weapon for DC. That the MI batsmen like the bowl to come to the bat could be exploited by the willy off-spinner. Also, the recent problems faced by Rohit Sharma against off-spinners—his strike rate is just around run a ball—could be used by Ashwin in his favour.

Predicted playing XI: Shikhar Dhawan, Prithvi Shaw, Steven Smith, Rishabh Pant, Marcus Stoinis, Lalit Yadav, Chris Woakes, R Ashwin, Kagiso Rabada, Avesh Khan, Amit Mishra

Squad: Prithvi Shaw, Shikhar Dhawan, Steven Smith, Rishabh Pant(w/c), Marcus Stoinis, Lalit Yadav, Chris Woakes, Ravichandran Ashwin, Kagiso Rabada, Avesh Khan, Lukman Meriwala, Ishant Sharma, Ajinkya Rahane, Amit Mishra, Umesh Yadav, Aniruddha Joshi, Sam Billings, Tom Curran, Shimron Hetmyer, Praveen Dubey, Anrich Nortje, Vishnu Vinod, Manimaran Siddharth, Shams Mulani, Ripal Patel

IPL 2021 | MI vs KKR match preview: Predicted playing XI, betting odds and where to watch live

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

Not many teams have dominated the other in the way the Mumbai franchise has against KKR.

Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), currently sitting at the second position in the points table, are scheduled to take on five-time champions Mumbai Indians (MI) in today’s clash. The fifth match of the 14th season of the IPL will see MI trying to settle down on the Chennai pitch where they will play the bulk of their initial matches. On the other hand, Eoin Morgan’s KKR will be nervous too as they don’t have a good head to head record against Rohit Sharma’s MI.

Not many teams have dominated the way the Mumbai franchise has versus KKR. With 21 defeats against MI in their 27 past encounters the Kolkata side has more than couple of things to prove.  KKR have lost against MI in crucial situations including their second meeting in the 2019 edition that saw the Kolkata side exit without reaching the knockout stage.

With Nitish Rana, Dinesh Karthik and Eoin Morgan at the top, the Kolkata side seems to have overcome the batting troubles that plagued them in the last two seasons. While Russel’s form and Sunil Narain’s absence is a concern Bangladesh all-rounder Shakib-Al- Hassan seems to have more than filled the vacuum. The bowling attack led by veterans Pat Cummins and Harbhajan Singh is also performing like a well-oiled machine. And the fact that the side is without any serious injury concerns makes it even better.

Key player: Opening batsman Nitish Rana has been the backbone of the outfit for a while. The southpaw has been one of the many players who have failed to make it to the international level despite a great track record. If Rana comes to bat with a devil may care attitude then the Mumbai side will certainly sweat a little more.

Probable XI: Nitish Rana, Shubman Gill, Rahul Tripathi, Eoin Morgan (c), Andre Russell, Dinesh Karthik (wk), Shakib al Hasan, Pat Cummins, Harbhajan Singh, Prasidh Krishna, Varun Chakravarthy.

Squad: Nitish Rana, Shubman Gill, Rahul Tripathi, Eoin Morgan(c), Andre Russell, Dinesh Karthik(w), Shakib Al Hasan, Pat Cummins, Harbhajan Singh, Prasidh Krishna, Varun Chakravarthy, Sunil Narine, Ben Cutting, Karun Nair, Pawan Negi, Kuldeep Yadav, Gurkeerat Singh Mann, Sheldon Jackson, Sandeep Warrier, Tim Seifert, Lockie Ferguson, Rinku Singh, Venkatesh Iyer, Kamlesh Nagarkoti, Shivam Mavi, Vaibhav Arora.

For Mumbai, the biggest challenge will be to live up to the hype. Not only must the Mumbai side maintain its domination against KKR, but they also have the pressure of defending the title.

Despite the defeat in the first match the challenge for MI will be to select a playing 11 from a squad filled with talent. While regular opener Quinton de Kock is back it will not be easy for the side to leave Chris Lynn who performed superbly in the first match. While the pace trio of Jansen, Boult and Bumrah seems to be doing ok there is a concern with the spin duo of Krunal and Chahar who seem to struggle with dew.

Key player: With nearly 1000 runs against KKR, Rohit Sharma has proved again and again that the Kolkata outfit is his most preferred opposition to bat against. The Mumbai side will hope that their captain will come in handy today.

Probable XI: Rohit Sharma (c), Chris Lynn, Suryakumar Yadav, Ishan Kishan (wk), Hardik Pandya, Kieron Pollard, Krunal Pandya, Rahul Chahar, Marco Jansen, Trent Boult, Jasprit Bumrah

Squad: Rohit Sharma(c), Chris Lynn, Suryakumar Yadav, Ishan Kishan(w), Hardik Pandya, Kieron Pollard, Krunal Pandya, Marco Jansen, Rahul Chahar, Jasprit Bumrah, Trent Boult, Quinton de Kock, Dhawal Kulkarni, Saurabh Tiwary, Aditya Tare, Adam Milne, Arjun Tendulkar, Piyush Chawla, Nathan Coulter-Nile, Jayant Yadav, James Neesham, Anmolpreet Singh, Anukul Roy, Mohsin Khan, Yudhvir Singh

India versus England 2nd Test: Intent to score was needed, the wicket was normal, says Rohit Sharma

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Summary

Intent to score and not just survive was the key to flourish on the Motera pitch, asserted India opener Rohit Sharma who batted effortlessly on the “interesting but normal” pitch that was declared difficult and challenging by visiting England batsmen. Rohit attributed his sublime first innings halfcentury to the positive intent that he displayed during the daynight third Test in which England got thrashed by 10 wickets inside two days on the spinfriendly pitch.

Intent to score and not just survive was the key to flourish on the Motera pitch, asserted India opener Rohit Sharma who batted effortlessly on the ”interesting but normal” pitch that was declared difficult and challenging by visiting England batsmen. Rohit attributed his sublime first innings half-century to the positive intent that he displayed during the day-night third Test in which England got thrashed by 10 wickets inside two days on the spin-friendly pitch.

”When you are playing on a pitch like that, you need to have an intent and look to score runs as well. You can’t just keep blocking,” Rohit said during the virtual conference after the match on Thursday. England captain Joe Root and Zak Crawley had earlier described the track as challenging.

The senior opener scored India’s only half-century of the game with the home side spinners accounting for 19 wickets. England batsmen were deceived by left-armer Axar Patel’s straighter deliveries that skidded straight instead of turning. Rohit felt that during his innings of 66, he was a step or two ahead of England bowlers.

”You just need to be slightly ahead at times and try and find ways to score runs. My intent was not just to survive but try and score runs as well while respecting the good balls. That’s all I tried to do. ”The pitch was an interesting one and oddball was just coming in and some were taking turns. On a track like this, you need to have a clear mindset, which I think I did until I played that sweep shot.” He felt that Patel’s strategy of attacking the stumps paid off well. The spinner ended the game with 11 wickets in his kitty.

”Axar was simply brilliant,” Rohit said, lauding the bowler who had big shoes to fill, replacing an injured Ravindra Jadeja. ”Coming out from nowhere and performing is never easy. He was out injured, slightly down, came back and bowled very well in Chennai. He understands conditions well and how to vary the pace and what lines to bowl.” Coming wider off the crease was also another effective ploy used by Patel. ”He made the batter play most balls which is important as you never know which one is going to turn. He bowls a little wider off the crease and his slightly slinging action makes it very difficult for the batsman to either leave or play,” said Rohit. For Mumbaikar, the second Test track at the Chepauk was way more challenging.

”If you look at the second Test, it was turning hell of a lot than what it did here, to be honest. But then a lot of batters got runs there in the second Test,” he said. ” As I said in this Test match, we have got to accept that we didn’t bat well but in Chennai where the pitch had a lot more to offer, we batted well on that track.

”Ashwin got a hundred, Virat got 60-odd, so if you applied yourself, you could still score runs,” said Rohit, who himself got 161 in that game. He admitted that tackling spinners in pink-ball games is an area that would need some work.

”We need to get back to the drawing board and decide what we need to do when the ball is not spinning. Most batters got out to straight balls.” Asked about the difference between the pink and the red SG ball, Rohit felt that the former travelled faster. ”I think it (pink) came to the bat a little faster than the normal red ball. I guess it has a lot to do with the conditions in the evening. The temperature goes down and plus dew factor.

”Whenever we play pink ball in India, it’s going to behave like that, lot more grass on the pitch,” he added.

With this victory, India has moved to the second spot in the Test Championship table. However, to reach the final against New Zealand, who have already qualified, India needs to win at least two test matches and win the ongoing series. A 2-2 draw between India and England, will result in Australia reaching the final.

England captain Joe Root and Moeen Ali were the only sparks in England’s second innings with the latter top-scoring with 43.

Axar Patel took 5-60. Patel became the ninth Indian bowler to pick up a five-wicket haul on Test debut as England was bowled out for 164 runs in the second innings and on the fourth day Tuesday. Ravichandran Ashwin was the last Indian spin bowler to achieve the feat, picking up 6-47 against the West Indies in 2011-12.

Ashwin took 3-53 in the second innings in this match and finished with a match haul of eight wickets. Kuldeep Yadav took 2-25 as Indian spinners accounted for all 10 wickets in the second innings and 17 wickets in the test overall.

England won the first test, also in Chennai, by 227 runs.

Earlier, Ashwin (106) scored his fifth test century and captain Virat Kohli made 62 as India was bowled out for 286 in the second innings.

Having picked up a 29th five-wicket haul in England’s first innings, it meant 34-year-old India all-rounder Ashwin registered a century and bagged five wickets in an innings in the same test for the third time in his career.

He moves ahead of Garfield Sobers (West Indies), Shakib al Hasan (Bangladesh) and Jacques Kallis (South Africa) on the all-time list and now trails only England’s Ian Botham, who achieved the feat five times.

“I have been practising with batting coach Vikram Rathour and would love to credit him with how my batting has come through over the last four or five matches,” Ashwin said. “I played a lot of sweep shots today and we had a plan against Jack Leach. I am thankful the plan paid off.”

IPL 2020: Rohit-led Mumbai Indians crushes Delhi Capitals to win 5th title

Summary

The defending champion Mumbai Indians won the Indian Premier League for a record-extending fifth time after routing the Delhi Capitals by five wickets in the final on Tuesday.

The defending champion Mumbai Indians won the Indian Premier League for a record-extending fifth time after routing the Delhi Capitals by five wickets in the final on Tuesday.

In reply to Delhi’s 156-7, Mumbai cruised to 157-5 in 18.4 overs on the back of captain Rohit Sharma’s 68 off 51 balls in his 200th IPL game and spoiled the Capitals’ first appearance in the final.

Delhi struggled against Mumbai’s pace, led by Trent Boult’s 3-30, including a wicket with the first ball of the final.

Delhi skipper Shreyas Iyer, who won the toss, made an unbeaten 65 and Rishabh Pant notched his first half-century this season before falling to Nathan Coulter-Nile on 56.

The IPL was played in the United Arab Emirates to protect the entire league from the coronavirus. Mumbai, the IPL winner in 2013, 2015, 2017 and 2019, topped the league round-robin and dominated second-placed Delhi in all four of their matches, including two in the playoffs.

Sharma and Quinton de Kock provided Mumbai a rollicking start of 45 off only 25 balls and virtually sealed the result within the first five overs.

Sharma opened his scoring by hoisting Ravichandran Ashwin for a straight six in the first over and de Kock blasted Delhi’s premier fast bowler, Kagiso Rabada, for two fours and a six in the South African’s first over, which went for 18 runs.

Marcus Stoinis, who was dismissed off Boult’s first ball in the final when Delhi batted, got the breakthrough off his first delivery when he found the edge of de Kock’s bat.

Suryakumar Yadav looked in good touch for his 19 before he sacrificed his wicket and was run out when Sharma went for a needless run.

Delhi reduced the margin of defeat when Anrich Nortje claimed two late wickets, including Sharma’s dismissal in the 17th over when he was brilliantly caught by diving substitute fielder Lalit Yadav.

Sharma showed no signs of the hamstring injury which initially ruled him out of India’s upcoming tour of Australia. He hit four sixes and five fours.

Ishan Kishan remained unbeaten on 33 off 19 balls to ease Mumbai to victory with eight balls to spare.

Delhi struggled throughout the tournament to preserve wickets in the first six overs of the powerplay and failed again on Tuesday as it lost its top three batsmen with only 22 runs on the board within the first four overs.

Stoinis went first ball to Boult, and Ajinkya Rahane nicked the New Zealand fast bowler down the leg side to wicketkeeper Quinton de Kock. Offspinner Jayant Yadav, playing in only his second game this season, then clean bowled Shikhar Dhawan on 15.

Iyer and Pant revived the innings with a 96-run stand before Mumbai came back strongly in the death overs by allowing only 38 runs in the last five overs.

Coulter-Nile deceived Pant with a short slower delivery and the left-hander holed out at fine leg after hitting four boundaries and two sixes. Boult returned and had Shermon Hetmyer steer an easy catch to short third man, and Axar Patel was outfoxed by Coulter-Nile with another slower short ball.
