Why has Rishabh Pant been suspended for one match and fined Rs 30 lakh after DC vs RR game?

Delhi Capitals skipper Rishabh Pant has been fined ₹30 lakh and suspended for one match for breaching the IPL Code of Conduct. The team was accused of maintaining a slow over-rate during their match against Rajasthan Royals at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi on May 7.

“As it was his team’s third offense of the season under the IPL’s Code of Conduct relating to minimum over-rate offenses, Rishabh Pant was fined ₹30 Lakh and suspended for one match. The rest of the members of the Playing XI, including the Impact Player, were each individually fined either Rs 12 lakh or 50 percent of their respective match fees, whichever is lesser,” read a statement from the Indian Premier League.

As per Article 8 of the IPL Code of Conduct, the Delhi Capitals filed an appeal challenging the ruling of the match referee. Following this, the appeal was referred to BCCI ombudsman for review. The ombudsman conducted a virtual hearing and affirmed that the decision of the match referee remains final and binding.

It is DC’s third offense of this IPL season hence the suspension came into vogue immediately leading to Pant missing the match against Royal Challengers Bengaluru which is scheduled to be held on Sunday. While the absence of Pant will certainly give RCB an edge they can’t get themselves lulled into a comfort zone.

The RCB, currently standing seventh in the points table with 10 points from 12 matches, will desperately hope not to run into that brilliant Capitals as a defeat can ruin their hopes to enter the IPL playoffs. But their confidence will be high, courtesy strong and consistent batting effort led by talisman Virat Kohli.

Can Delhi make it to the IPL playoffs?

Delhi Capitals’ future in IPL playoffs depends on CSK and SRH as well. DC need to win their last two games with the hope that between Hyderabad and Chennai, one team loses their remaining games.

On May 7, Rishbah Pant’s Delhi Capitals (DC) trounced the Sanju Samson-led Rajasthan Royals (RR) in match 56 of IPL 2024 at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi. Batting first DC scored 220/8 on the back of 50s from openers Jake Fraser-McGurk and Abhishek Porel. The Delhi skipper had a poor outing as he was dismissed for 15 after facing 13 balls.

In their chase, RR scored 201 runs and RR’s innings was powered by Samson’s thrilling knock of 86 in 46 deliveries. The innings consisted of 8 fours and 6 sixes.

While Pant had a poor outing, his team was victorious. In contrast, Samson’s good show with the bat could not fetch the desired outcome for his team. Nonetheless, as soon as the IPL season ends, both Samson and Pant will travel to the US and West Indies to represent India in next month’s ICC T20 World Cup 2024. Indian captain Rohit Sharma and head coach Rahul Dravid will have a tough job when they sit to pick the wicket-keeper for India’s playing XI.

Both the wicket-keeper batters have garnered support from different quarters to be selected as India’s first choice ‘keepers. “Pant should be part of the World Cup squad,” Sourav Ganguly said last month. Before the Indian squad was picked, former Indian pacer Zaheer Khan had picked Pant as India’s sole wicketkeeper in the squad.

If the likes of Ganguly and Khan have backed Pant, then there is Matthew Hayden and Kumar Sangakkara who have leaned towards Samson to do good at the World Cup.

“Sanju Samson was batting like a dream, scoring 86 off 46 balls. He’s proven his worth time and again… Throughout the tournament, he’s been a master blaster, handling both spin and pace with finesse,” Hayden said after DC’s win.

“It’s really up to Rahul Dravid and Rohit Sharma and how they see the combination. But he (Samson) has made his case, so hopefully he’ll have a good run in the World Cup,” Sangakkara told reporters after the match.

To gauze who is more in-form, here is a look at how Pant and Samson have performed in IPL 2024 so far:

While IPL numbers won’t matter when selecting a wicket-keeper is concerned, it is interesting to note that both players have almost similar numbers in this year’s IPL and the two are the leading run-scorers for their respective teams.

Now, it remains to be seen who will be picked in the playing XI whether it will be Pant or Samson.

Kolkata was in sight of Hyderabad Sunrisers’ IPL record of 277 runs scored — against Mumbai Indians last week — before it finished on 272-7 against the likes of fast bowlers Anrich Nortje (3-59) and Ishant Sharma (2-43). Kolkata’s multimillion dollar signing Mitchell Starc (2-25) and impact player substitute Vaibhav Arora (3-27) killed the run-chase inside the batting powerplay as Delhi got bowled out for 166 in 17.2 overs.

Kolkata’s big win lifted it to the top of the leaderboard in the lucrative T20 league while Delhi slipped to No. 9 with two points from one win in four games — just above winless five-time champion Mumbai. Delhi’s ploy to go with just one spinner Axar Patel didn’t work out against Narine and Angkrish Raghuvanshi as the pair raised a 104-run second wicket stand off just 48 balls.

Narine smacked seven sixes and seven fours and Raghuvanshi was equally splendid in scoring 54 off just 27 balls with three sixes and five boundaries. Both fell in successive overs when Narine top-edged pull against Nortje to wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant and Raghuvanshi was caught on the edge of third man boundary while going for a ramp shot against Sharma’s short ball.

Pant (55) and Tristan Stubbs (54) made rapid half-centuries with Pant smashing two sixes and four boundaries in Venkatesh Iyer’s one over. However, both fell against leg-spinner Varun Chakaravarthy (3-33) while going for big shots as Delhi got bowled out with 16 balls to spare.

The left-hander has been a part of the Capitals pre-season preparatory camp in Visakhapatnam, ahead of their first IPL 2024 match against Punjab Kings in Chandigarh on March 23.

Earlier, Pant was given clearance by the BCCI to play as a wicketkeeper batter in this year’s IPL. “After undergoing an extensive 14-month rehab and recovery process, following a life-threatening road mishap on December 30, 2022, near Roorkee, Uttarakhand, Rishabh Pant has now been declared fit as a wicket-keeper batter for the upcoming IPL 2024,” the board had stated in a medical update.

Delhi head coach Ricky Ponting too had given a thumbs-up for the way Pant was playing at nets during the team’s camp. “We missed him incredibly last year. The whole tournament missed him. Rishabh brings so much energy to the team. He’s got that smile on his face, he’s hitting the ball as good as ever and he tends to lift all of his teammates around him,” said Ponting.

Last year’s Australian veteran David Warner had led the Capitals and they finished ninth in the 10-team league with five wins and nine loses ahead of Sunrisers Hyderabad.

“Talking about the right knee, none of the ligaments were spared during that accident. You talk about ACL, PCL, lateral collateral ligament, medial collateral ligament, popliteus muscle, as well as part of the quadriceps, you name it and he didn’t have it,” says Dhananjay Kaushik, physiotherapist at the NCA.

Pant leads the Delhi Capitals in the IPL and missed the entirety of the previous season due to his accident.
He had to miss out on crucial international assignments like the World Test Championship (WTC) final in England as well as the whole of the ICC Men’s ODI World Cup that was held in the country in October-November last year.

“I think if there’s anyone who could’ve made a comeback, it’s Rishabh. With the kind of attitude he’s got, the way he takes things in his stride,” adds Kaushik.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has officially declared that wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant is fit to return to competitive cricket, beginning from the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 onwards.

Pant leads the Delhi Capitals in the IPL and missed the entirety of the previous season due to his accident.

He had to miss out of crucial international assignments like the World Test Championship (WTC) final in England as well as the whole of ICC Men’s ODI World Cup that was held in the country in October-November last year.

Meanwhile, pacers Prasidh Krishna and Mohammed Shami, who represent Rajasthan Royals (RR) and Gujarat Titans (GT) in the IPL, will miss out of the 2024 edition of the tournament.

“The fast bowler underwent surgery on February 23rd, 2024, on his left proximal quadriceps tendon. He is currently being monitored by the BCCI Medical Team and will resume rehab at the National Cricket Academy soon. He will not be able to take part in the upcoming TATA IPL 2024,” BCCI wrote about Prasidh.

“The fast bowler successfully underwent surgery on February 26th, 2024, for his right heel problem. He is currently being monitored by the BCCI medical team and is ruled out of the upcoming TATA IPL 2024,” the board’s update about Shami read.

Pant and his return to competitive cricket sparks hope about the possibility of him playing the ICC Men’s T20I World Cup that will be co-hosted by West Indies and the United States of America (USA) in June-July this year.

BCCI monitoring Rishabh Pant’s recovery on daily basis ahead of IPL 2024

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) secretary Jay Shah has confirmed they are monitoring Rishabh Pant’s recovery progress daily ahead of IPL 2024.

“Pant is doing well and he is batting and is also keeping. Shortly, we (BCCI) will declare him fit. If he can play in the T20 World Cup for India, that will be a big thing for us. He is a big asset for us,” Jay Shah said during an interaction on the sidelines of the fifth Test match between India-England in Dharmsala.

Shah also cleared the air about Pant’s selection in the team which will depend on his fitness and will be decided by the National Cricket Academy in Bangalore.

Shah added, “The door is open for him. Right now he has begun to keep, so we are waiting. Our team is accessing his fitness and it’s only after consulting them, that we can give him the clearance on fitness.”

Delhi Capitals coach Ricky Ponting stated that he has started training but it will only depend on his fitness.

“It’s a big decision we’ll have to make because if he is fit, you’d think he’d step straight back into that captaincy role. If he’s not entirely fit and we have to use him in a slightly different role, then we’ve got some decisions to make there,” Ponting said.

Rishabh Pant might miss next IPL too, says Delhi Capitals teammate Ishant Sharma

Delhi Capitals (DC) player Ishant Sharma has said that his teammate and franchise captain Rishabh Pant might not return in the next edition of the Indian Premier League  (IPL) as the road to his recovery might take longer than expected.

After the 25-year-old survived a grave car accident in December 2022, Pant went through multiple medical treatments. Currently, he is undergoing rehabilitation at NCA, and in a recent video, he was seen doing some weight lifting while his knee guard was still on.

“I feel we might not see Rishabh Pant in the next IPL as well because it is not a small injury,” Sharma said. “It was a very serious accident. He has just started batting and wicketkeeping and to run and turn after that, there are a lot of things, which is not easy for a wicketkeeper and a batter,” added Sharma.

Pant has made significant progress in his rehabilitation and has commenced batting as well as keeping in the nets. He is currently following a fitness program designed for him which includes strength, flexibility, and running.

“The good thing is that he didn’t have a second surgery. If he had undergone a second surgery, he would have been out for even longer. He has had one surgery now but I don’t think he will be fit for the World Cup for sure. Hopefully, if he gets fit for the IPL, it will be great, ” Sharma signed off.

That effectively rules the southpaw out of any possible cricketing action for the coming 8-10 months. Pant will hence miss several important assignments in the time being with the most important of them being the ICC Men’s ODI World Cup in October-November this year in India.
