Summary

As soon as around 95 French troops marched down the Kartavya Path at the heart of the national capital, the whizzing warplanes pierced the morning sky making thousands of spectators crane their necks in wonder.

Two Rafale fighter jets flanked by a multi-role tanker transport aircraft of the French Space and Air Force roared through Delhi’s sky as India celebrated its 75th Republic Day at a grand parade on Friday, January 26, with French President Emmanuel Macron gracing it as the chief guest.

As soon as around 95 French troops marched down the Kartavya Path at the heart of the national capital, the whizzing warplanes pierced the morning sky making thousands of spectators crane their necks in wonder.

A 30-member band contingent from France also drew attention at the grand parade.

It was the second time the French armed forces participated in India’s Republic Day celebrations. In 2016, French troops became the first foreign military contingent to participate in the biggest ceremonial event of the country.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi was the guest of honour at the prestigious Bastille Day Parade in Paris in July last year.

The Indian Air Force’s Rafale fighter jets and a tri-services marching contingent took part in the Bastille Day parade.

“This reciprocal invitation to national day celebrations is unprecedented, and shows the deep mutual trust and unwavering friendship underpinning Indo-French ties,” a French readout said on India inviting Macron to the Republic Day celebrations.

The French military contingent that participated in the parade comprised six Indians. It was led by Captain Noel Louis.

The contingent belonged to the Corps of French Foreign Legion.

The French Foreign Legion is an elite military corps that is open to foreigners who want to serve in the French Army.

Set up in 1831, the French Foreign Legion is an integral part of the French Army. At present, it has almost 9,500 officers and legionnaires.

The defence and strategic ties between India and France have been on an upswing in the last few years.

The two strategic partners have been looking at co-development and co-production of advanced defence technologies, including for the benefit of third countries.

The two sides are also expanding cooperation in the maritime domain including in the Indian Ocean Region.

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

During Exercise BRIGHT STAR-23 last week, an Egyptian Air Force aircraft was air-to-air refuelled by an Indian Air Force (IAF) IL-78, according to IAF.

The Indian Air Force (IAF) recently conducted air-to-air refuelling operations for the Egyptian Air Force during the ongoing BRIGHT STAR-23 Exercise. The exercise, which commenced on August 27, 2023, at Cairo (West) Air Base in Egypt, has been a platform for fostering global defence cooperation and strengthening strategic relations among participating nations.

The footage of the exercise, which was shared by the news agency ANI on social media platform X (previously Twitter), shows the IL-78 tanker refilling MiG-28 and Rafale aircraft mid-air.

The IAF announced yesterday that Exercise BRIGHT STAR-23 had entered its final phase. The last phase, which comes after a build-up to complex combined missions, will require the resources of all participating forces.

During Exercise BRIGHT STAR-23 last week, an Egyptian Air Force aircraft was refuelled mid-air by an Indian Air Force (IAF) IL-78, according to the IAF. ā€œShowcasing the bonds of friendship in the skies over Egypt during Exercise Bright Star, where the Indian Air Force IL-78 air-to-air refuelling aircraft refuelled fighter jets from the Egyptian Air Force,ā€ the IAF claimed.

The IAF’s participation in Exercise BRIGHT STAR-23 marks its debut in this biennial multilateral tri-service event. This year’s exercise has seen the involvement of air force contingents from various nations, including the United States, Saudi Arabia, Greece and Qatar.

According to reports, the Indian Air Force contingent, comprising five MiG-29s, two IL-78s, two C-130s, and two C-17 aircraft, has played an essential role in executing joint operations and strengthening international bonds. IAF’s Garud Special Forces and Squadrons Numbers 28, 77, 78, and 81 actively participated in the exercise, an IAF official said according to the report.

Exercise BRIGHT STAR-23 scheduled to continue until September 16, 2023, has not only provided an opportunity for military collaboration but also showcased the diplomatic role of the IAF abroad.

The Indian Air Force’s involvement in such international exercises is seen as a vital step towards building stronger relations between nations and fostering cooperation in the defence sector.

India selects naval version of Rafale, says Dassault Aviation

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

“The Indian Government announced the selection of the Navy Rafale to equip the Indian Navy with a latest-generation fighter,” Dassault Aviation said in a statement.

The Indian government announced the selection of the naval variant of Rafale jets to equip the Indian Navy with the latest-generation fighter, Dassault Aviation, a French aerospace major and maker of the aircraft, said on Saturday.

The defence ministry had on Thursday approved the purchase of 26 Rafale (marine) jets from France.

There was no mention of the procurement of Rafale jets in a document released following Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s talks with French President Emmanuel Macron on Friday.

“The Indian Government announced the selection of the Navy Rafale to equip the Indian Navy with a latest-generation fighter,” Dassault Aviation said in a statement.

It said the decision came after a “successful trial campaign held in India, during which the Navy Rafale demonstrated that it fully met the Indian Navy’s operational requirements and was perfectly suited to the specificities of its aircraft carrier”.

“The Indian Navy’s 26 Rafale will eventually join the 36 Rafale already in service, which are giving full satisfaction to the Indian Air Force, making India the first country to make the same military choice as France by operating both versions of the aircraft to help consolidate its superiority in the air and on the seas and guarantee its sovereignty,” it said.

India is procuring the Rafale jets for deployment on the indigenously built aircraft carrier INS Vikrant.

The French defence major said Rafale’s selection confirms the excellence of the jet and its “exceptional quality of the link between Dassault Aviation and the Indian forces and the importance of the strategic relationship between India and France”.

“As we celebrate the 70th anniversary of our partnership with the Indian Forces, I would like to thank the Indian authorities for this new mark of confidence and pledge, on behalf of Dassault Aviation, that we will fully meet the Indian Navy’s expectations with the Rafale,” said Eric Trappier, chairman and CEO of Dassault Aviation.

India approves procurement of 26 Rafale jets from France ahead of PM Modi’s visit

Summary

India’s defence ministry has approved the procurement of 26 Rafale marine aircraft and three additional Scorpene submarines. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to announce these projects during his visit to Paris.

Confirming CNBC-TV18’s exclusive report from yesterday, India’s defence ministry on Thursday approved the proposed procurement of 26 Rafale marine aircraft. The Defence Acquisition Council under Union Minister Rajnath Singh’s chairmanship also cleared the acquisition of three additional Scorpene submarines.

This development comes as Prime Minister Narendra Modi begins a two-day visit to Paris. While in France, Modi is expected to announce these mega defence projects after wide-ranging talks with President Emmanuel Macron in Paris on Friday.

An exclusive report by CNBC-TV18 on Wednesday shared that the Defence Procurement Board (DPB) had approved a proposal to buy 26 Rafale fighters for the Indian Navy. The story also reported that Mazagon Docks Ltd. would build the three Scorpene submarines which received initial approval.

The DACā€™s approval of the projects comes after a meeting that took place today, July 13, a week after the projects were cleared by the DPB.

The Indian Navy is looking for procurement of these 26 deck-based fighter jets for the indigenously-built aircraft carrier INS Vikrant.

After a lengthy process, the Navy had narrowed down on Boeingā€™s F/A-18 Super Hornet and French aerospace major Dassault Aviationā€™s Rafale M aircraft for procurement.

Later, Rafale-M, the naval variant of the lethal jet, emerged as the winner in the tight race.Ā  India has already procured 36Ā RafaleĀ jets from France for the Indian Air Force.

The Rafale jets are Indiaā€™s first major acquisition of fighter planes in 23 years after the Sukhoi jets were imported from Russia.

Under Project 75, six Scorpene submarines have already been made in India. The sixth Scorpene submarine, Vaghsheer, was launched in April last year and undertook its first sea sortie in May this year.

A contingent of the Indian military will also participate in the parade, including troops from the Indian Army’s Punjab Regiment, the Indian Navy and the Indian Air Force.

Mazagon Dock, in December last year, delivered the fifth Scorpene Submarine “VAGIR” of Project P-75 to the Indian Navy. The Vagir was launched in November 2020 and has undergone tests and trials for over a year before delivery. Before Vagir, the company had delivered submarines namely Kalvari, Khanderi, Karanj, and Vela.

The sixth Scorpene submarine, Vaghsheer, was launched in April last year and undertook its first sea sortie in May this year.

Renault unveils new SUV ‘Rafale’; check aviation-inspired cockpit

The Renault Rafale is a new coupe-style SUV that made its world premiere at the Paris Air Show on June 19, 2023. It is inspired by the world of aviation and borrows its name from a 1930s racing airplane.
The Rafale is Renaultā€™s flagship model and the first production vehicle to fully embody its new design language, overseen by former Peugeot design boss Gilles Vidal. It features arrow-shaped LED DRLs, a sleek nose, a distinctive grille, and toned-up fenders.
The Rafale has a sloping roofline that gives it a sporty and elegant look. The rear glass is inclined at 17 degrees, which improves aerodynamics and eliminates the need for rear wipers. The SUV also has Y-shaped LED taillights, an integrated spoiler, and a roof spoiler.
The Rafale measures 4.71 m (185.4 inches) long, 1.86 m (73.2 inches) wide, and 1.61 m (63.4 inches) tall with a wheelbase of 2.74 m (107.9 inches). It is based on the same CMF-CD platform as the Austral and Espace but has unique body panels.
The Rafale offers a range of colour options, including the new White Pearl and Alpine Blue shades, along with the classic Flame Red, Diamond Black, and gloss Ceramic Grey. It rides on stylish 20-inch alloy wheels that add to its presence.
The Rafaleā€™s interior is spacious and luxurious, with a dashboard and OpenR digital cockpit that is carried over from the Austral and Espace. It features a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, a 12-inch touchscreen for the infotainment, and an optional 9.3-inch head-up display.
The Rafale also has sport seats that are upholstered in Alcantara with tri-colour stitching and feature illuminated Alpine emblems on the seatbacks. Renault has used dyed cork and slate for the dashboard inserts and clever ambient lighting that can adapt to the time of day.
A very cool feature of the Rafale is the Solarbay panoramic glass roof that can switch from fully opaque to transparent according to passenger preferences. Renault claims that despite the curved roofline, there is ample headroom and knee room for rear passengers.
The Rafale has a large boot capacity of 647 litres (22.8 cubic feet), which is comparable to that of the five-seater version of the Espace. It also has plenty of storage spaces and cubby holes throughout the cabin.
The Rafale is equipped with a comprehensive suite of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), which expands its Level 2 autonomy across various types of roads. It also has adaptive headlights, four-wheel steering, and an active suspension system for enhanced safety and comfort.
The Rafale is a hybrid-only affair, but as a proper flagship, it gets the automakerā€™s most efficient and powerful E-Tech powertrains. At launch, it will be offered a hybrid system that combines a 1.2-litre petrol engine with two electric motors for a total output of 197bhp.
The hybrid version of the Rafale can drive on electric power alone for short distances, such as around town. Renault says that it expects 80% of urban driving to be completed without the petrol engine firing up. This should result in low running costs; the Rafale hybrid officially returns 60.1mpg and emits 105g/km of CO2.
The hybrid version will be joined later in 2024 by a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) version, with a bigger battery and an additional electric motor to drive the rear wheels (making it a four-wheel drive). This version produces a combined 296bhp, and while Renault has yet to confirm the size of the battery, weā€™d expect an electric-only range of at least 35 miles.
The Rafale is expected to go on sale in the global markets in spring 2024. The pricing and availability details will be disclosed at the time of its launch, but in Europe, the car is expected to carry a price tag of around ā‚¬55,000 (around Rs 49.3 lakh).
The Rafale is a bold and ambitious move by Renault to enter the premium SUV segment and compete with rivals such as the CitroĆ«n C5 X, Cupra Formentor, and Peugeot 408. It showcases the brandā€™s new vision and innovation, as well as its heritage and passion for aviation.

3 Rafale fighters with Indian enhancements to land in Feb; last one arrives in April

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

The four Rafale fighter jets are the last of the 36 aircraft bought during the deal between India and France in 2016. The deal also includes the option of purchasing a further 18 Rafales at an inflation-adjusted price.

India will receive the last four Rafale fighter jets starting February this year. The multirole twin-engine fighter jets will be fitted with Indian enhancements and arrive in fly-away condition. Three of the fighter jets will arrive on February 1-2, depending on the weather conditions, while the last fighter will arrive in April. The jets will set flight from the Istres-Le Tube Air Base, North-West of Marseille in southern France. They will be refuelled mid-air by Airbus multi-role transport tankers of the United Arab Emirates Air Force.

Why the last fighter will arrive nearly two months later than the other three is not yet known, but the jet, in particular, is the first Dassault Rafale which was used to train Indian pilots once deliveries had started. Defence Secretary Ajay Kumar had inspected the fighter at the Istres-Le Tube Air Base, during his visit to France in December 2021.

While the exact specifications of the ā€œIndian enhancementsā€ are not known, reports have stated that the Rafale jets will come bearing ā€œlong-range Meteor air-to-air missile, low band frequency jammers, advanced communication systems, more capable radio altimeter, radar warning receiver, high altitude engine start-up, synthetic aperture radar, ground moving target indicator and tracking, missile approach warning systems and very high-frequency range decoys,ā€ reported The Hindustan Times.

The four jets are the last of the 36 aircraft bought during the deal made between France and India in 2016. The deal also includes the option of purchasing a further 18 Rafales at an inflation-adjusted price.

Amid tensions with China in the past few years, reports had indicated that India was considering purchasing around 36 more Rafales to bolster its combat strength. The country was reportedly considering floating a new tender for getting 114 multi-role combat aircraft, after the delivery of the first 36 Rafales. No information about any future acquisitions has, however, emerged in the past two years.

The IAF will be inspecting the four aircraft to ensure that the enhancements and original equipment are up to their standards. The remaining 32 Rafales will then be retrofitted with the same specific enhancements, with the equipment that is being stored with the IAF. The retrofitting exercise will be undertaken at the Hashimara Air Base in the Eastern Sector.

In response to Indiaā€™s Rafales, Pakistan bought 25 multirole J-10C fighter jets from its all-weather ally China. While Pakistan already has a fleet of US-made F-16s, it was looking for an answer to India’s latest defence purchase.
