Summary

The BJP’s show of solidarity with its top leader came a day after RJD president Lalu Prasad Yadav launched a personal attack on Prime Minister Modi stating that he has no family.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and other senior BJP leaders, including Deputy Chief Ministers Keshav Prasad Maurya and Brajesh Pathak, on Monday added ‘Modi ka parivar’ to their social media handles after Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s assertion that the whole country is his family.

The BJP’s show of solidarity with its top leader came a day after RJD president Lalu Prasad Yadav launched a personal attack on Prime Minister Modi stating that he has no family.

Addressing a rally in Telangana’s Adilabad on Monday, Modi attacked “dynasty parties” in the country, saying they may have different faces, but “jhoot and loot” was their common character. The 140 crore people of the country are his family, he said.

Uttar Pradesh BJP chief Bhupendra Singh Chaudhary, ministers and other leaders have also added ‘Modi ka parivar’ on their ‘X’ handles. The RJD chief, while addressing a rally of the opposition’s INDIA bloc in Patna on Sunday, had slammed Modi for raising the issue of dynastic politics and asked why the prime minister doesn’t have a family.

The opposition parties have formed the INDIA bloc to take on the BJP in the upcoming Lok Sabha polls. In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, in reply to the slogan of ‘chowkidar chor hai’ given by the Congress, the BJP had initiated a campaign ‘mai bhi chowkidar hoon’.

President Putin also provided Prime Minister Modi with updates on recent developments in Russia.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi reiterated his call for dialogue and diplomacy to find a solution to the Ukraine conflict in a brief interaction with Russian President Vladimir Putin over the phone on Friday, June 30. The two leaders discussed various aspects of their bilateral cooperation and exchanged views on regional and global issues of mutual interest, according to a statement from the prime minister’s office (PMO). President Putin also provided Prime Minister Modi with updates on recent developments in Russia.

“While discussing the situation in Ukraine, PM reiterated his call for dialogue and diplomacy,” it said.

The conflict between Russia and Ukraine has been a source of concern for the international community for over a year, with Western nations expressing their disapproval of Putin’s actions. Modi’s reaffirmation of the need for dialogue and diplomacy underscores India’s commitment to resolving conflicts through peaceful means.

During the phone call, both leaders expressed their commitment to maintaining regular communication and continuing efforts to strengthen the Special and Privileged Strategic Partnership between India and Russia. This partnership has served as a cornerstone of the bilateral relationship, facilitating cooperation in various fields, including defense, energy, trade, and culture.

Prime Minister Modi, President Putin, and Chinese President Xi Jinping, among other world leaders, are expected to attend the summit virtually. This forum provides an opportunity for further engagement and collaboration on regional and global issues of importance.

India and Russia share a long-standing history of friendship and cooperation, and the continued dialogue between Prime Minister Modi and President Putin reflects the commitment of both nations to strengthen their ties. As the situation in Ukraine remains a topic of concern, the call serves as a reminder of the importance of peaceful resolutions and diplomatic engagement in resolving conflicts and fostering stability in the region and beyond.

State visit by PM Modi is an inflection point in India-US relationship, says former Indian envoy

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

According to Rick Rossow, a Senior Adviser at CSIS, the pace at which technological advancements are being shared between India and the United States is unprecedented.

The relationship between India and the United States has witnessed significant growth and transformation in the past two decades.

Speaking to CNBC-TV18, former Indian envoy to China Gautam Bambawale, asserts that the India-US relationship should be examined based on its own merits, rather than solely in the context of China. Both nations have become increasingly comfortable working together, forging stronger ties that extend beyond diplomatic exchanges, he added.

“We must look at India-US relations on their own merits and on their own strengths. I do not disagree that there is the China factor which is bringing us together and further cementing the close ties between India and US, but I would not overplay the China factor either,” Bambawale said.

According to Bambawale, the state visit by Prime Minister Narendra Modi will serve as an inflection point in deepening partnership between the two nations. The high-level discussions and agreements reached during this visit will pave the way for enhanced cooperation in multiple domains, including defence and technology, he added.

“The current state visit by Prime Minister Modi will be looked upon later as an inflection point in India-US relations because the two countries began discussing and implementing transfer of technology. Transfer of technology not just in jet engines but also in other areas like AI, 5G, 6G, computer chips etc. So this particular visit by PM Modi is an inflection point where sharing of technology by US and India is something which is a new aspect of the bilateral relationship,” Bambawale said.

Over the past 20 years, India and the United States have steadily built a stronger foundation for their relationship. Bambawale notes that both countries have become much more comfortable working with each other, transcending previous hesitations and aligning their interests in various areas. This growing comfort level has set the stage for deeper engagement and cooperation in the years to come.

Also Read: Modi US visit | Elon Musk says he’s ‘big fan’ of PM, will visit India next year for investments

Bambawale highlighted that in recent years, the sharing of technology has emerged as a crucial element in the India-US relationship. This new dimension of cooperation not only strengthens the bilateral ties but also holds the potential to drive economic growth and innovation.

According to Rick Rossow, a Senior Adviser at CSIS, the pace at which technological advancements are being shared between India and the United States is unprecedented. While technology transfers were challenging seven to eight years ago, today, they are progressing rapidly. This accelerated pace reflects the deepening trust and collaboration between the two countries, resulting in mutually beneficial outcomes.

Also Read: Modi meets Biden: A celebration of Indian American achievements

Despite the growing momentum in technology sharing, navigating the complexities of defense technology remains a challenge. The United States has a set of restrictive policies in place, making it difficult to predict the final decisions regarding defense technology agreements. As Rossow notes, until the agreements are released, the exact parameters of technological cooperation in defense will remain uncertain.

PM Modi launches centenary celebrations of Pramukh Swami Maharaj

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

The PM recalled his special relationship with Pramukh Swami Maharaj, saying he was treated as a son by the “great saint” who built many temples all around the world, as he inaugurated the centenary celebrations of Swaminarayan sect leader.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday inaugurated the centenary celebrations of Swaminarayan sect leader Pramukh Swami Maharaj, who he said treated him like a son.

Recalling his conversation with the late Pramukh Swami when the Akshardham temple faced a terrorist attack in 2002 when he was the chief minister of Gujarat, Modi said the former had asked if the CM’s residence was affected as it was near the temple.

Modi, who was in Ahmedabad on Monday to attend the swearing of Bhupendra Patel as CM, made his second visit to his home state in three days, to inaugurate the month-long celebrations.

The PM recalled his special relationship with Pramukh Swami Maharaj, saying he was treated as a son by the “great saint” who built many temples all around the world.

Modi said the pen with which he signed the nomination papers to contest his first state assembly election from Rajkot was sent to him by Pramukh Swami Maharaj.

“After that he used to send pens to me every time to sign nomination papers and he even sent pens with BJP colours when I fought the Lok Sabha election from Varanasi,” Modi said As its fifth spiritual guru, Pramukh Swami Maharaj headed the BAPS (Bochasanwasi Akshar Purushottam Swaminarayan Sanstha), the most popular of the 16 branches of the Swaminarayan community, between 1950 and 2016.

During this period, the sect set up temples in places like Atlanta, Los Angeles, London, Toronto, Auckland and Sydney. There are Akshardham temples in New Delhi and Gandhinagar and another will open soon in New Jersey.

The Swaminarayan Sampraday is a Vaishnavite movement that originated in the early 18th century, reaffirming the values of the Hindu ‘sanatan dharma’.

The head of the sect is considered very powerful and has an iron-like grip over its one 10 lakh-plus followers. The sixth and current head of the Sampraday is 89-year-old Mahant Swami Maharaj.

While the sect attracts followers from all faiths and castes, the Patidar community is connected with the top echelons of the sect. It is essential for state politicians to have the blessings of the BAPS spiritual head, a political observer said.

The 800-plus “saints” associated with BAPS across the globe do not have any kind of interaction with women, even through distant modes of communication like an email.
