Watch | PM Modi, wearing a turban, serves langar at Patna gurdwara

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

During his visit, the Prime Minister was seen wearing a Sikh turban as he bowed his head in Darbar Sahib and even distributed food (langar) to devotees at the Gurdwara.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday, May 13, visited the Takhat Sri Harimandir Ji Patna Sahib in Bihar’s Patna City. The Prime Minister was seen wearing a Sikh turban as he bowed his head in Darbar Sahib and even distributed food (langar) to devotees at the Gurdwara.

“Prayed at Takhat Sri Harimandir Ji Patna Sahib this morning. Felt truly blessed to experience the divinity, serenity and rich history of this sacred place. This Gurudwara has a close link with Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji. Our Government had the honour of marking his 350th Parkash Utsav in a grand manner. May the teachings of the Sikh Gurus continue to inspire and guide us all,” PM Modi wrote on social media site X while sharing a few photographs from his visit.

On taking part in ‘Seva’ at the Gurudwara, he said it was a “very humbling and special experience” for him.

“Sikhism is rooted in the principles of equality, justice and compassion. Central to Sikhism is Seva. This morning in Patna, I also had the honour of taking part in Seva as well. It was a very humbling and special experience,” he said in another post.

Former Union minister Ravi Shankar Prasad, who is seeking re-election from the Patna Sahib parliamentary constituency in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, was also present when PM Modi visited.

“It’s a historic day and a matter of pride for us… Modi Ji is the first Prime Minister who visited Takhat Sri Harimandir Ji Patna Sahib,” Prasad told mediapersons.

Located in the state’s capital city, Takhat Sri Patna Sahib also known as Takhat Sri Harimandir Ji, Patna Sahib, is one of the five takhats of the Sikhs.

The construction of the takhat was earlier commissioned by Maharaja Ranjit Singh during the 18th century to mark the birthplace of Guru Gobind Singh, the tenth Sikh Guru.

Guru Gobind Singh was born in Patna in the year 1666. He spent his early years at this place before moving to Anandpur Sahib.

Congress accepts invitation: Rahul on letter to him, PM Modi from former judges for public debate

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Saturday said he or party chief Mallikarjun Kharge would be pleased to participate in such a discussion and expressed hope that Prime Minister Narendra Modi would also take part.

Lauding the initiative for a public debate on the Lok Sabha elections, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Saturday said he or party chief Mallikarjun Kharge would be pleased to participate in such a discussion and expressed hope that Prime Minister Narendra Modi would also take part.

“It would be a positive initiative for the major parties to present their vision to the country from one platform for a healthy democracy,” Gandhi said in a post on X.

He also added that the nation expects Modi to participate in the debate. The Congress leader shared on X his reply to Justice (Retd) Madan B Lokur, Justice (Retd) Ajit P Shah and N Ram, who had written to him and the prime minister earlier this week, inviting them to a platform for a debate on the key election issues.

In their letter addressed to the country’s leaders, the trio had stated that the proposal for the debate was non-partisan and in the broader interest of every citizen.

Gandhi said he discussed the invitation with Kharge and they agreed that such a debate would help people understand “our respective vision and enable them to make an informed choice”.

“It is also critical to put to rest any unsubstantiated allegations attributed to our respective parties. As the principal parties fighting the election, the public deserve to hear from their leaders directly,” Gandhi said in his letter replying to the invitation.

“Accordingly, either myself or the Congress president would be pleased to participate in such a debate,” he added. The former Congress chief also said he looks forward to participating in a productive and historic debate.

“Please do let us know if and when the prime minister agrees to participate, following which we can discuss the details and format of the debate,” he added.

In his post on X, accompanied by the letter, Gandhi said, “Congress welcomes this initiative and accepts the invitation for discussion. The country also expects the prime minister to take part in this dialogue.”

At an event in Lucknow on Friday, answering a question from a member of the audience, Gandhi said he was ”100%” prepared to take on Modi in a debate and added that he knew the prime minister would not agree.

Congress won’t win even 50 seats, will not get opposition party status: PM Modi

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

PM Modi assured BJP will form government in Odisha, promising a leader with Odia roots as CM. Modi attacked BJD, blaming them for state’s poverty despite its resources.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday claimed that the Congress will not win even 50 seats in the Lok Sabha elections and will not be able to get the opposition party status after the polls.

Addressing election rallies in Kandhamal and Bolangir Lok Sabha seats, Modi claimed that Odisha’s ‘asmita’ (pride) is in danger and the BJP will protect it, while asserting that a “double engine” government of the saffron party will be formed in the state and a “son or daughter of the soil who understands Odia language and culture” will be made the chief minister.

Attacking the BJD, he called for ousting from power those responsible for keeping people poor despite the state having bountiful natural resources.

“Congress will not be able to get 10% seats to become principal opposition in the Lok Sabha. They will not win even 50 seats,” Modi claimed.

In an apparent reference to Rahul Gandhi, he said, “The Congress ’shehzade’ has been reading out the same script since 2014 polls… mark my words, NDA will break all records and will win over 400 seats this time.”

Recalling the achievements of the previous BJP government at the Centre under Atal Bihari Vajpayee, he said that on this day 26 years ago, Pokhran tests had enhanced the image of the country across the globe.

He also asserted that his government ended 500 years of people’s wait by building Ram temple in Ayodhya. “BJP made a tribal daughter of Odisha the President of India, who is the commander-in-chief of the armed forces,” he asserted.

Attacking the BJD government in the state, he said that Odisha is a rich state but most people are poor.

“Those responsible for this must be ousted from power in the state,” he added.

Sam Pitroda resigns from Congress post after doing it again — what did he say

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

Pitroda’s resignation from the post of chairman of the Indian Overseas Congress comes after his remarks about ethnic and racial identities in a podcast stirred a political storm, offering PM Modi some more fodder for his campaign speeches.

Sam Pitroda has resigned as the chairman of the Indian Overseas Congress following his controversial remarks, confirmed senior Congress MP Jairam Ramesh.

“Mr. Sam Pitroda has decided to step down as Chairman of the Indian Overseas Congress of his own accord. The Congress President has accepted his decision,” Ramesh stated.

Pitroda’s resignation comes after his remarks about ethnic and racial identities in a podcast stirred a political storm, leading the BJP to label the Congress as “racist.”

During the podcast, Pitroda’s choice of words to describe various ethnic groups triggered criticism, prompting the Congress to quickly distance itself from his remarks, terming them “most unfortunate and unacceptable.”

“We could hold together a country as diverse as India — where people on the East look like Chinese, people on the West look like Arabs, people on the North look like maybe White, and people in South India look like Africans. It doesn’t matter. We are all brothers and sisters,” Indian Overseas Congress leader Sam Pitorda said in an interview with The Statesman.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, amidst campaigning for the fourth phase of polls, criticised Pitroda’s remarks, stating that people will not tolerate insults based on skin colour.

At rallies in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, Modi expressed anger over racial profiling and linked Congress’ Opposition to Droupadi Murmu’s presidential bid to this mindset.

Responding to the controversy, Jairam Ramesh stated, “The analogies drawn by Mr. Sam Pitroda in a podcast to illustrate India’s diversity are most unfortunate and unacceptable. The Indian National Congress completely dissociates itself from these analogies.” Ramesh also announced Pitroda’s resignation, which was accepted by the Congress president.

The BJP, however, dismissed Congress’s disassociation with Pitroda’s comments, citing his history of making “insulting and demeaning” remarks, including those on terrorism and the 1984 anti-Sikh riots.

Pitroda’s comments have become the centre of a debate for a second time within a month. In April, he had suggested inheritance tax as one way to redistribute wealth to the poorer sections of the Indian society. However, the Congress manifesto did not promise an inheritance tax.

Pitroda’s previous controversial remarks, such as “hua to hua” (so what) in response to questions about the 1984 communal violence and “it happens all the time” reference to the Pulwama terror attack, have also caused significant uproar.

Modi slams Congress over Sam Pitroda’s ‘skin colour’ remarks, hits out at Rahul Gandhi

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

Hitting out at top Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, Modi said he has now understood that the national party sought to defeat President Droupadi Murmu in the presidential poll as her “skin colour is dark”.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday attacked the Congress over its party leader Sam Pitroda’s comments over skin colour and asserted that the countrymen would not tolerate insult on the basis of skin colour.

Hitting out at top Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, Modi said he has now understood that the national party sought to defeat President Droupadi Murmu in the presidential poll as her “skin colour is dark”.

As Pitroda’s reported comments kicked up a row, Modi asked, “will the ability of people be decided in my country on the basis of skin colour.” “Who gave the permission to ’shehzada’ for this game of skin colour,” he asked while addressing an election rally at Warangal in the state.

Pitroda’s comments that people in the Eastern parts of the country resembled the Chinese, while those from the South looked like Africans, had kicked up a row.

“I am angry today. If anyone abuses me, I don’t get angry. I can tolerate that. But, the philosopher of ‘shehzada’ gave such a big abuse which has filled me with anger,” Modi said.

Referring to Rahul Gandhi showing Constitution in his election rallies, he asked whether those who dance by keeping Constitution on their head were insulting the countrymen on the basis of skin colour.

India would not tolerate insult to the countrymen on the basis of skin colour, he said, adding ’shehzade’ (Rahul Gandhi) must answer.

Modi also said he has now come to know as to why Congress had sought to defeat Murmu in the presidential elections in 2022 despite her having a great reputation.

“I came to know today that an uncle of ‘shehzada’ lives in America. The uncle is his philosopher and guide,” he said in an apparent reference to Sam Pitroda.

“Shehzada’s philosopher and guide uncle has opened a big secret. He said those whose skin colour is dark, they are all from Africa,” he said.

That means, he (Pitroda) has abused so many people of the country on the basis of skin colour, he alleged.

Whatever is the colour of skin, the countrymen worship Lord Sri Krishna whose skin colour was like all of us, Modi said.

Earlier, at Vemulavada in Karimnagar, Modi attacked Congress over the “Ambani-Adani” issue, demanding that the party explain to people why it has stopped raising the matter. Congress’ ‘Shehzada’ used to do for the past five years, Modi said and asked if the party has struck a ’deal’.

Have “tempo loads of notes (money)” reached the Congress that it has stopped targeting “Ambani-Adani’,” Modi asked.

“Ever since elections have been announced, these people (Congress) have stopped abusing Ambani-Adani. I want to ask from Telangana soil, let the Shehzada announce, how much has been lifted from Ambani-Adani. Has tempo loads of notes (currency) reached the Congress? What deal has been arrived at, that abusing Ambani-Adani has stopped overnight,” he asked.

“Certainly something is fishy. For five years, (they) abused Adani-Ambani and it stopped overnight. It means you have received some tempo loads of ’chori ka maal’ (loot). You have to answer the nation,” the Prime Minister said.

The Congress has been attacking the Modi government, accusing the Prime Minister of favouring the top five industrialists in the country, including Gautam Adani and Mukesh Ambani.

Addressing the rally after the third phase of general elections (May 7), Modi also said the phase has blown the third ‘fuse’ of Congress and its INDI Alliance. Congress leaders were searching for seats using magnifying glass after the latest round of polling.

In fourth phase, they will have to use microscope, he said.

He added four phases of polling are left and with the blessings of the people, the BJP and NDA were marching toward victory.

Attacking the Congress and K Chandrasekhar Rao-led BRS in Telangana, Modi said while the BJP believes in the ’nation first’ principle, for the two parties it is ‘family first’.

The BRS and Congress openly criticise each other on corruption, but it is a common factor between these parties, he charged.

Taking a veiled swipe at Rahul Gandhi and Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy, he said there is a lot of discussion up to Delhi on the “double R (RR)” tax in the state. He also claimed Congress will do away with reservation for SC/ST and OBCs and give it to Muslims.

Will PM Modi contest elections in 2029? Here’s what he replied

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

“In politics, people come and people go. No country should be run on the basis of one person. Modi would never want the country to become completely dependent on Modi,” he said.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has said that no country should ever be run on the basis of one person alone, adding that he doesn’t want India to be entirely dependent on Modi.

In an interview with Times Now, PM Modi was asked whether he is only preparing for 2024 or also has plans in place for the 2029 general election.

“In politics, people come and people go. No country should be run on the basis of one person. Modi would never want the country to become completely dependent on Modi,” he said.

The Prime Minister added that his country has given birth to many gems and will surely find many more in the future.

“There will be many more such gems in the future. The country will keep on running. People should work hard to improve their future and win the trust of the country,” PM Modi said and quipped that they should “go on fewer vacations”.

During the interview, PM Modi also said that he does not prepare for elections at all and is rather focused on his vision for India’s future and where will it reach in 2047.

“I don’t prepare for elections at all. I neither think about elections nor do I work according to the election schedule. My vision is clear, what India achieves in 2047 when it marks 100 years of Independence … where will we be then,” he said.

PM Modi recalled that during the Budget session this year, he said that the Centre will form a demographic commission.

“I said in the Budget, now you may call it a trailer, that we will institute a commission on demography. What’s this about? Around the world, many countries are worried about the ageing of a large portion of their population … I don’t want that in 2047, there is no planning for our elderly,” Prime Minister said.

“We are young now, but someday we’ll grow old. It’s the Centre’s job to think about it today. I think about it – when the youth of today grow old around 2047, they aren’t helpless. We need to plan for this. I want to work at this level, with that thought process. I mentioned it in the Budget, the media may not have picked it up,” he added.
